Door Hardware — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a passage set, privacy set, and dummy set?

A passage set latches but does not lock — it’s used for hallways, closets, and rooms where privacy isn’t needed. A privacy set has a push-button or turn-button lock on the interior side, making it ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms. A dummy set has no latch or lock at all — it’s a decorative pull used on one side of a double door or on a closet door that doesn’t need a latch.

What door hardware finishes do you carry?

We stock door hardware in matte black, satin nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze — the three most popular finishes for both interior and exterior applications. Our in-stock product lines are designed to coordinate across functions so you can mix knobs, levers, and deadbolts while maintaining a consistent finish throughout your home.

Can I buy door hardware at a discount near Louisville, KY?

Yes — Builders Surplus carries door hardware at discount prices at our Louisville (5600 Poplar Level Rd) and Florence, KY locations. We serve customers throughout Louisville, Florence, and the greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area.

Do you carry barn door hardware kits?

Yes. We stock industrial-style barn door hardware sets in matte black and stainless steel finishes. These sliding track systems work with standard interior barn door slabs and are available in our Louisville and Florence stores. Call ahead to confirm current availability.

How do I know if I need a right-hand or left-hand door lever?

Stand facing the door from the outside (the side the hinges are not visible). If the handle is on your right, you need a right-hand lever. If the handle is on your left, you need a left-hand lever. Many of our lever sets feature fully reversible handing, so the same set works for either door swing — check the product details or ask our in-store team for help.
