Why Pattern Tile Is The New Obsession

Pattern tile is a new obsession in the interior design and remodeling community. Why? Because it’s AWESOME.

Pattern tile is one of my favorite trends to come out in some time. It can be modern, farmhouse, traditional, or vintage, along with many other looks. Change the pattern, change the look.

The Pattern Tile Trend

The rise of pattern tile is not exactly recent. Go to Italy and you’ll see pattern tile floors everywhere. It is not just a trend, it’s a timeless and classic look.

Some may give credit to Joanna Gains and her fixer upper designs to the increased popularity of pattern tile, and they’d probably be right. Joanna is an interior design powerhouse and the materials, styles, and looks that she uses in her hit show “Fixer Upper” have shaped the remodeling materials industry heavily in the last several year. However, she in no way created the style.

Some may find it too busy, and if you do, then that’s totally fine. Not every style matches every taste.

The key to utilizing pattern tile in a space properly is to make sure that you incorporate simplistic items around the tile, as it’s meant to be the focal point. You also want to make sure you have a really refined color palette.

Where to Incorporate Pattern Tile?

There are so many places that you can use this stunning tile. You can use it on:

  • Bathroom Floors
  • Shower Walls
  • Accent Walls

  • Kitchen Backsplashes
  • Kitchen Backsplash Accents
  • Fireplaces

  • Laundry Room Walls
  • Laundry Room Floors
  • And basically any space that needs a POP!

Pattern Tile Options

When looking for pattern tile, you’re going to find several options that you can choose from. The first is material. You’ll typically find ceramic or porcelain options, and often terra cotta.

black and white pattern tile

Next, you’ll decide between hand painted tile and manufactured tile. Hand painted tile is obviously going to make it much more expensive. There is nothing wrong with using manufactured printed tile, especially if you want to save money. It won’t add a ton of value to your home by going with a hand painted option.

We carry 3 gorgeous options in store, but click here to see all of the special order options that we can get for you in just a few short weeks! They are porcelain, and very high quality, yet affordable.

Tile Flooring & Backsplash Tile Options Compared

When looking for tile flooring or backsplash tile, it can get a little confusing. There are many patterns, styles, sizes, and materials to choose from. What are the pros and cons you might ask? Well, we’re here to lay it out for your straight. Below we’ll compare all the top tile choices for tile flooring or backsplash tile.

Backsplash Tile and Tile Flooring Materials:

Ceramic Tile:

Ceramic tile is one of the most popular options for backsplash tile or tile flooring. Ceramic usually reflects the terra cotta color of it’s clay, or can also be white. Ceramic tile is sometimes glazed and occasionally has different patterns on it as a result. Chips can be much more noticeable in ceramic tile than they are in porcelain. If a ceramic tile has been glazed, the chip will reveal a different color internally. Ceramic tile is not as strong as porcelain tile due to the manufacturing process. This means that it cannot be expected to hold up nearly as well.
You typically don’t want to put ceramic tile anywhere that is a high traffic area or that will be exposed to a lot of wear and tear. Ceramic flooring in an entryway, for example, would be a bad idea. Not only will it much more easily chip or crack if you drop something on it, but those imperfections are going to be pretty noticeable. Backsplash tile works well with ceramic tile and you can also use it on countertops if you choose. The consensus is that ceramic tile is easier to install than porcelain tile. If you are a DIY tile installer or a novice tile worker, I would say choose ceramic tile.

Porcelain Tile:

The other top choice for backsplash tile is porcelain. Porcelain backsplash tile or tile flooring is almost always going to be white, grey or cream/tan. Porcelain tile is almost always left unglazed. Chips are not very noticeable. This is because porcelain tile is the same color all the way through. This is a big benefit for many people when choosing porcelain over ceramic.
Porcelain tile is denser and less porous than ceramic tile and doesn’t show its imperfections easily and it’s also more waterproof. However, you still don’t want them exposed to that level of damage from the elements. Because of the water resistance issue, porcelain is a better choice for flooring in bathrooms or on shower walls. Porcelain would be a better flooring choice for most areas that get a high amount of traffic due to their increased durability. Porcelain tile is harder to cut, especially when the cuts are not a straight line. Porcelain can also require special tools to install, so you may want to get professional installation.

Stone Tile:

There are many forms of stone tile, so we won’t go into detail about all of them, but will give you a gist of each. Most stone tiles will need to be sealed before and/or after installing and be kept up with sealing thought out the years. This makes it a little more high maintenance than the rest.

Travertine-and-Marble tile flooring

Travertine Left, Marble Right

Marble:
Pros: Beautiful colors and patterns, because its natural, no two tiles are ever the same.
Cons: Prone to staining, will show wear quickly from acid based products.
Travertine:
Travertine needs to be sealed before grouting and after installation. If it’s not sealed, it will stain easily. Travertine tile is a softer stone, which means it can be scratched much more easily.
Pros: Beautiful, unique tile. Can feel soft when used as a flooring. Looks great as a backsplash.
Cons: It can scratch and stain fairly easily.

Slate Left, Granite Right

Granite:
Granite is very heavy. The subfloor must be completely level and have the strength to support such a heavy material. If the floor has bumps or even tiny valleys, granite will crack easily if used as a flooring. It can be used as a backsplash but needs to be installed properly.
Pros: Beautiful color, hard surface that takes wear and tear from normal family life.
Cons: One of the heaviest flooring choices, must have support in place.
Slate:
Slate It is more stain resistant that most other stone, is water resistant and very durable. Slate can be cracked if laid on an uneven subfloor, or if a heavy object is dropped on it. It has been known to flake or peel because it’s formed in layers. This tile needs to be sealed.
Pros: Dark, earthy color works well with a natural, rustic look. Very durable.
Cons: Tiles can be uneven due to the layering quality of the tile.

Backsplash Tile and Tile Flooring Styles:

Subway Tile: Subway tile is a classic style. If you’re looking for something that will stand the test of time, this is it. However, just because it’s classic doesn’t make it boring. There are a lot of variations of subway tile. You have handcrafted that has a beautiful crafted finish, glass, which is more modern, colored for a pop of personality, large format to make the room look bigger, or a smaller format for a dramatic look. The options are endless. Subway tile installation can be very time consuming, so if you don’t have patience and tile skill, get a pro to install. This is more costly of an installation than some because of the time it takes.
Mesh Back Tile: Mesh back tile is great for several reasons. It comes in foot by foot sheets, so it can go up pretty quickly. Cuts can often be done without a tile saw and you can use tile nippers (depending on the project). It comes in some really amazing shapes and patterns that would usually be a pain to install as individual tiles. Very popular these days.
top backsplash tile ideas for your home
Ledge Stone: I wouldn’t recommend ledge stone as a tile flooring, but it does work great as a backsplash tile. It has an uneven surface that juts out in some area and is recessed in some areas. It is heavy, so it does require a special installation. It can be difficult to clean because of the texture and surface, so areas that won’t get very dirty would be ideal places to use this tile.
Patterned Tile: Patterned tile is becoming very popular. They are typically porcelain so they can be used in any area and are water resistant. You can use them for backsplash tile or flooring tile. They will definitly make a statement! They are typically perfect square tiles with the pattern printed on top. I love this look and hope it remains popular for years to come.
Patterned Backsplash Tile
Large Format Tile:
Large format tile is a great choice for backsplash tile or tile flooring. Because it’s large, you can cover more space quickly, however, it’s still very important to take your time during installation because it can easily have lippage (edges sticking up) because of it’s size. Using a tile leveling system is always recommended with large format tile, which is classified as anything larger than 15″ on any side. Large format can make a space look larger, so it works well for small spaces! When using it on walls, you need to be sure that you’re using an adhesive designed for large tile, otherwise it could come down and take some of your drywall with it!
I hope we’ve been able to help answer any questions that you might have about backsplash tile or tile flooring choices. There are a lot of options out there so it’s good to have all the information before buying. Replacing tile is a large undertaking most of the time, so make sure you choose something that you will be happy with and that will stand up to the area you’ll be using it in for the next 20 years!

Golden Honey Ledger Stone Bathroom Tile

Ledger Stone has made a major impact in the tile industry, in my opinion. If you’ve noticed, “look-alike” products continue to gain popularity, and Ledger Stone gained its varsity letters before any of them. The one featured below is a fan-favorite, for sure. It’s gorgeous in any setting, but especially bathrooms and, oddly enough, fireplaces, too. Simply stunning. While it does LOOK amazing in the shower, do let your customers know that it is difficult to clean. It needs to be completely waterproof behind the tile or you will get mold.

So, you can get this stylish, trendy bathroom tile for only $5.99/piece, right here at Builders Surplus. Now, this is one of the priciest product to make this list, but for good reason. If you’re a fan of texture in aesthetics, then this product is for you.

Black Penny Round Mosaic Bathroom Tile

I’m a huge fan of contract in a bathroom, and the Black Penny Round Mosaic bathroom tile is perfect for setting up that kind of style. I’ve always imagined a white floor tile with this product used as a backsplash. It’s timeless. It’s classic. And so eye-appealing. Plus, I’m a huge fan of curvature during any kind of design, so this pattern hits me right in the feels.

Right now, you can get this contrast-maker for only $4.99/sq. ft. One more thing about this, though, is its versatility. Where I’m more inclined to install this bathroom tile as a backsplash, it’s fine for a shower floor, too!

Legend Blanco Large Format Tile

I enjoy the movement in this tile. And it’s a subtle gray, too, ya know? Not too deep, not too light. Just right. Now, this is a Large Format Tile, so the possibilities are pretty much endless, in terms of install. Personally, I think this color belongs on the floor, maybe with a dark vanity top or something of that nature.

As we proceed, you’ll see that these prices really are unmatched, y’all, starting with this one. You can get this Legend Blanco bathroom tile for ONLY $1.99/sq. ft. Heckuva deal, right? Portland Beige 18×18 Bathroom Tile

Another large format tile, Portland Beige is another one of my favorites due to its tone and color. But, what’s really attractive about this piece is its price. Right now, you can get this tile for only $0.69/sq. ft! That’s less than three quarters, everyone.

This classic, tried-and-true still does wonders in establishing that a traditional look. Honestly, folks, what’s not to like about it. Remember me talking about contrast earlier with the Black Penny — well — this is its counterpart.

Family Friendly Remodeling Materials

It doesn’t matter if you have a bigger family or a smaller one, accidents are just going to happen. Someone is going to knock over the grape juice all over the kitchen countertops, muddy footprints will trail the floors all the way up to the culprit’s bedroom, someone’s going to neglect the “clean bathroom” chore for weeks at a time, leaving soap scum and grime to everyone’s displeasure, spices will be misplaced or unfortunately found in the fridge, and crumbs will layer the living room floor no matter how many times you vacuum. Families and messes go together like the mop and the broom in the closet down the hallway. It’s inevitable. BUT…there are some remodeling materials that you can use in your renovation that will alleviate some of the stress that these messes bring, some even eradicating them altogether. In this post, we’ll detail some of these remodeling materials, which you’ll undoubtedly think about the next time you’re wiping up spaghetti sauce that’s dribbled down the cabinet door.

Remodeling Materials – Quartz Countertops

So, there’s a term that I need to say here, and at first glance I, too, was like, “Uhhhh…is that a word?” Wipe-ability. I hyphenated it for your sake, but apparently, this is a thing. It means exactly what you think it does, and it goes in context with the first remodeling material I have for you today. Quartz countertops are undoubtedly the easiest surface to maintain. It’s a non-porous material, so there’s no chance of anything staining. It’s also extremely durable; it won’t chip, crack, scratch, or scuff.     remodeling materials   remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – CoreTEC Flooring

New-age technology combined with a stunning, jaw-dropping look, CoreTEC is a flooring like no other. It’s best characteristic and the main reason it makes this list? 100% waterproof. Not water-resilient. Water. Proof. You could dump an entire gallon of whatever on these floors, leave for the weekend, and you’d come back to it staring right back at you like, “What? Was that supposed to phase me or something?” It doesn’t warp. It doesn’t buckle. It doesn’t act like your typical hardwood flooring at all. Too legit. And we have these lovely remodeling materials right here, in store, ready to be installed. Click here to check out our inventory.     remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Tiled Shower Walls

In general, tile is your safest bet when it comes to having a low-maintenance floor. But tiled shower walls exemplifies this characteristic. Heavily. As opposed to fiberglass shower walls, soap scum, dirt, and grime are easier to clean and maintain with a tiled shower wall. It can be as simple as purchasing an After Shower cleaner and wiping the walls down each time. Easy as pie. SIDENOTE: If you do tile your shower walls, refrain from using white grout. Those are TERRIBLY difficult to clean and you’ll curse the day you ever decided that. And chiseling out grout is no fun. Trust me. I know. Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Organizers

Everything just seems to run smoother in the family when you can find the things you’re wanting when you need them. Kitchen organizers are an excellent way to sort out all of your cooking essentials and save some space. Cause after all, counter space can be scarce within any family and in the morning when you’re frantically trying to make breakfast or make lunches for the day, you need as much space as you can get. Installing one of these inexpensive kitchen organizers makes for one of the best remodeling materials on this list. They’re handy and have a way of revolutionizing your organizational patterns in the kitchen. We have an abundance in stock, as well. Head here to shop! remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Island

A kitchen island can be used as one of those hot spots in the house, ya know? A place where people gather to do homework, eat meals, and discuss their day. To me, a kitchen island is one of those assets that just bring together AND they’re one of the most functional tools in a kitchen design. More space. More storage. Less hassle.   remodeling materials   It’s in my hopes that these researching materials will meet your family friendly needs. Once again, we have most of these beneficial products in store! So, come on down to one of our two locations in Louisville and Cincinnati, and get started on your renovation today!

PRO: Additional Options to Impress Your Clients

How’s it going, professionals? I hope business is well, and that you’re so slammed with jobs, you honestly don’t know what to do with yourself at the moment. It’s better to have an abundance of jobs than to be stressing where your next one will be, am I right? Today, I’d like to discuss a few options, quite literally, on how you can maintain repeating customers in your queue. You’ll do this by simply impressing your clients in a way that shows off your finesse as a master of your trade.
In essence, you’ll suggest options that may have been overlooked in the initial design and will hopefully having your customers so satisfied with your expertise that they’ll go to no one else but you during their next renovation. To do so, I’ll break it down by a number of categories – kitchen, bath, flooring, tile, and doors – and provide a suggestion that one, enhances the look of the design, and two, will make your customer very happy that they called you. Cause that’s what it’s all about, right?

Kitchen Options – Crown Moulding

It’s no secret that cabinets are a significant factor in any kitchen design. They’re essential for the appearance of the kitchen style, but also for functionality as well. Typically, larger families require more kitchen space, from both the countertops and cabinets. The trick is to blend both together, using aesthetics as well as how functional the cabinets are to produce a design that gives you the best of both worlds. Those two words in bold, two lines above are yet another way to enhance the look of the kitchen without your customer’s digging too deep into their wallets.
The Crown Moulding option is one that can COMPLETELY change the look of a kitchen. Yes, it’s that drastic. It makes the difference of your standard cabinet look to something more elegant, elaborate, and sophisticated. At a pretty low cost. There’s a wide variety of options, too. Everything from extremely intricate designs to simple, smooth beveled edges. Just throw it out as a suggestion, and let your customers determine if they like the look or not. But – and I’m willing to bet – they’ll appreciate the tip.

options

Bath Options – Backsplash

Ah, talk about an enhancement. A tiled backsplash in a kitchen is almost mandatory once you’ve installed a couple during bathroom renovations. It’s simply a lovely feature, and I have a theory on why that is. Bear with me here, but a design is only as good as the components that it’s made of. Let’s take the color aspect of it all. If the colors do not work, the design does not work. But if the colors mesh well with another then it becomes appealing to the eye. So, when it comes to a backsplash, it’s just another asset, or component, that helps blend in the colors in the design.
Plus, look at the materials you’re dealing with, vanity alone. You have the color of the vanity, the color of the countertop, the wall paint color, accessories, and so on…and then when you add a backsplash, it just pulls everything together to make something quite extraordinary. Once again, low on cost, relatively easy on install, and tremendous on appearance. I love this option. Your clients will, as well. Take a peek at our backsplash tile options on our website. We have a wide variety of styles and finishes that will accommodate a number if designs!

Flooring Options – Quarter Round

In the remodeling industry, as you know, you hear the phrase “finishing touches” multiple times in conversation. Putting in quarter round after you’ve installed the floor and finished trimming the room is simply one of those things you can do to really “complete” a room. That God awful gap between the base boards and the floor is simply not a good look, and yes, I know that some people are fine with it to lower costs, but the look is ten times better when it’s taken care of. Maybe twenty.
I’d definitely suggest this option if you’re renovating a wide, open area like a basement or something of that nature. Closets and storage rooms aren’t as important, but in rooms where there’s going to be a flow of traffic, where your clients will entertain their guests, and so on…this is an excellent option. It’s the dot on the ‘i’ and the cross on the ‘t’.

options

Tile Options – Decorative Mosaic

Out of all the options that I’ll list in this post, this is the one that I’d highly suggest. Especially if you’re installing a tiled shower or a backsplash. My father likes to call them “decos,” for short, and we’ve installed quite a bit of them for a number of clients. They absolutely love the look. To me, personally, I think it’s best exemplified in a stand-up, tiled shower. Placing them about eye level, the color blends (or contrast, if you prefer) just make it truly legit design.
Honestly, that’s as best as I can say it. It’s just a 100%, cool-as-all-get-out, bad@$$ design. Straight up. I implore you to at least suggest “deco” tiles when on your next tile job. It’s stunning. Simply stunning. Again, we have a vast amount of some of the finest design and trends in decorative mosaic tiles that one can ask for. Go take a look right here!

Door Options – Custom Paint it

You have many of your standard colors out there to work with, it is true. But, if you want to really make a lasting impression, suggest to your client that they purchase a custom paint to finish of their door. It may seem a bit…quirky, sure, but I’m telling you, it’s effective. Last summer, one of my father’s longtime clients had us install an exterior door for them. The lady of the house wanted the front door to “pop,” so we went with this Canary Yellow color.
\And I’ll tell ya what, if I wasn’t almost blinded while about 50 times as I applied the paint. Super bright. Vivid. Distinct. At first, I thought these characteristics were faults, but once we installed it, and drove up on it for the first time, I began to appreciate its vivacity. It drew the eye, and to me, that’s what mattered most. Suggest a custom paint color, urge your client to think outside of the box, to have a one of a kind feature in a home that will make it entirely their own. Suggest these options, and watch the effects unfurl.

White subway tile has never really gone out of style. It always has been, and always will be, a classic design staple. My favorite variation on this look is to add a dark grout instead of the traditional white. While it doesn’t quite cover all the little imperfections that a white grout would, it makes the backsplash tile really pop and gives it a very vintage and nostalgic look. This can also work in a modern space.

10. Ledger Panels

Ledge-stone backsplash tile

Ledger panels, or ledge stone, is another tile choice that is not always the first thing you might think of for your kitchen. It comes in so many different colors that you can easily match your cabinets no matter what their finish might be.

What To Look For When Buying a Bathroom Vanity?

Maybe you’re on the last leg of a pretty extensive bathroom remodel, or you’re just looking for a quick fix, a sly change to satisfy your need to switch up a look that’s been spread out too long for your liking. In any case, it doesn’t matter why you’re out shopping, but what does are the particulars for what you’re shopping for. Today, I’d like to dive into what you should look for when you’re buying a bathroom vanity.

Bathroom Vanity Size

Obviously, this is important, right? We can’t be having a too-small or too-big cabinet just chillin’ in the bathroom, not properly installed. That’s simply preposterous. So, before you go out, you should have the proper measurements. It’s known that vanities come in standard sizes, so you should be okay for the most part. But, for example, if you’re looking for a vanity that accompanies his or her sinks, then you need to know the exact measurements for them. So on and so forth.

bathroom vanity

Bathroom Vanity Drawer Space

Arguably, the most important, in my opinion. If you’re anything like my girlfriend, you have loads of cosmetic supplies. Now, whether those supplies are necessary is subject for another blog post, and not one that I’d like to write in fear of her finding it, but I digress. Shop for a vanity that accommodates your any and every need. If it’s a family bathroom, you might need quite a bit of drawer space. And, please, don’t be fooled by the “dummy” drawers. You know, the ones that look like they pullout, but then you try and you silently curse yourself. Sometimes designs aren’t quite as functional as you’d like them to be.

bathroom vanity

Bathroom Vanity Color

It’s safe to say that your bathroom has a certain style, a certain theme that you’ve incorporated for the entire room. But even if it doesn’t, some vanity colors are just going too look better than others in a certain area. This especially goes for paint color. You’re not going to put a dark vanity in a purple bathroom, are you? Here, I’ll rephrase that, you shouldn’t. Seriously don’t. But when you’re shopping, keep the colors of your bathroom in mind. Please.

bathroom vanity

Bathroom Vanity Style

Now, going along with what I’ve mentioned before about adhering to the design of your bathroom, you should keep in mind the style. There are many types of vanity styles – traditional, contemporary, rustic, modern, you get the gist of it. Bottom line is, you don’t want clashing styles in a bathroom. It’s way too small of space, so it’ll be highly noticeable, eye-cringing, and just overall extremely problematic. ‘Tis a no-go.

bathroom vanity

Bathroom Vanity Versatility

Some wood materials that vanities have to offer are more versatile than others. For example, if you’re wanting to create a rustic look on your own, instead of buying it as is, then you’ll need to purchase one that has the right material. Most come in hardwood, manufactured wood, metal, or glass. Wood is obviously the go to choice for pulling of the rustic look, sanding the surface, antiquing and aging it. So, if you’re like me, and have the tendency to get bored with the same look over the years, make sure you choose a material that allows your creativity to thrive.

bathroom vanity

Bathroom Vanity Bathroom Fixtures

When I say fixtures, I’m encompassing an embodiment of accessories here. Sink faucet, soap dishes, lotion pumps, toothbrush holders – the whole nine. The trick of perfecting any look or any design is having the ability to have each element of the room blend beautifully and accentuate authentically. You’d like it to look like each piece was literally MADE for the room. With that said, think of everything you’d like to incorporate and adhere your bathroom vanity it. The result is exquisite. Trust me.

bathroom vanity

Alright, folks, there, written above, are six factors you should keep in mind as you shop for your bathroom vanity! I know it may seem like a lot to think about, but if you want to achieve the best look possible in your bathroom, you should probably adhere to it.

2016 Design Review: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Well, it’s been an interesting year! Definitely one for the books, I’d say. But we’ll hone it in during this post and talk about a design review, as opposed to crazy elections, erupting riots, and Pokemon Go. We’ll just leave that for the media to handle. So, allow me to list a few designs for you, the best and the worst during this past year, what worked and what, well, just didn’t.

Design Review: The Good

Reclaimed Wood: If you ask me, this look is simply timeless. Making wood look aged and antiqued isn’t just fun to do, but the product is pretty satisfying as well. Unique-looking, this style has definitely made a name for itself this past year, and we can only hope that it’ll stick around.
Background of reclaimed timber for a modern rustic look
Black Window Frames: Most window frames that you see are limited in color. You have your gentle whites and maybe an almond or two that you’ll come across, but in 2016, darkening the frames turned out to be aesthetically pleasing. And I have to say, I love the look. It makes the window a focal point, which is perfect for a craftsman or contemporary window.

Minimal design: No surprise here, right? One of the hottest trends this past year was the subtle hints of no design at all. Playing with neutral, light colors only and not making an area look “too busy.”
Bright light modern minimalist bedroom interior with a king size bed below a rows of windows on a light colored parquet floor with white walls. 3d Rendering.
Use of concrete: This trend took 2016 by storm! Before, concrete was seen as more of an industrial material, seen mainly in factory warehouses or other commercial properties, but not anymore. One of the hottest styles in the kitchen world right now are concrete countertops. Having the ability to shape and mold your own working space has piqued many people’s interests across the nation. The picture below is from Kelly Moore, author of blog The Journey of Bags, Photography, Life & Moore. You can check out the original post here.

Glass tile: Most notably in backsplashes, glass tile became a huge hit, bumping ceramic tile to the wayside in this design review.

Design Review: The Bad

Stainless Steel Appliances: I’m only 25, but I can still remember stainless steel appliances being the IN thing when I was a kid. Apparently, it was similar to that of having a Mercedes in the drive at the time – if you had it, it meant “you made it.” Well, that’s no longer the case anymore. These appliances are have run its course, mainly because of how limited you are with the rest of your design.
a beautiful bright modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances
Copper Lighting: I’ve never much cared for copper as a finish to begin with, although I can see where some would find it appealing. For those that do adore this sleek, shiny (maybe a bit too shiny) finish, it seems that it’s being put to the back burner as a design trend.
Brown Copper Ceiling Lamp isolated on white
Mason Jars: This is definitely more of an interior design trend than anything, but I couldn’t agree with it more. Can we please stop using mason jars as design props to set around the house? At first, I’ll admit, it was an interesting idea. Gave the scenery an old-fashioned, borderline rustic look that made a house feel like a home. But, like many trends, it’s been overdone, and therefore also receives the boot on this list. Sorry, moonshiners.
christmas decorations candles in glass jars with fir on a old wooden table
Chevron: Ah, another design that people went crazy for, but has become so prominent, it’s getting overwhelming. Now, having been to college, I’ve seen this a lot. Like, a lot a lot, and honestly, the look just makes me cringe a bit now. In any case, the design has been deemed “out” by many interior designers and big-time, major home remodeling resources like Houzz. Bye, bye Chevron.

DIY Backsplash: Subway Tile, Right Way Install

subway tile

A kitchen sporting a beautiful backsplash is much like dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s – it is a nearly essential finishing touch. If you’re searching for a look that completely “wows” your guests after you’ve finished your kitchen remodel then it’s pretty penultimate to at least start choosing the styles that you’d like to incorporate. Today, we’re going to discuss Subway tile, how to correctly prepare for its installation, and what you can do to make it as appealing as possible.

Measuring the Subway Tile Space

subway tile
I’m pretty sure I’ve stressed this before, but taking precise measurements is a crazy essential part to this entire process. Measure the space you’re working with, and make sure you have an ample amount of material to work with. This should be your beginning. Trust me, you don’t want to get everything setup, prepared, and installed to find out that you’re short four tiles at the very end. There are few things more aggravating than that.

Account for the small spacers you’ll be using on install, as well. Measure from one end to the space to the other. This measurement should give you exactly what you need as far as how many tiles you’ll need AND also where the center of your space is. This is always a good stopping point to take a step back and look at how level your work is.  Tile installation is my father’s expertise, his speciality, his bread-and-butter, if you will. So much that we’ve taken half an hour to an hour mapping everything out before I’ve even setup the tile saw. Yes, it is that important.

Leveling the Subway Tile

Subway tile is usually very light in weight and easy to maneuver. Thus, the leveling process isn’t too difficult to begin with, but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to get off somewhere. Now, you don’t want to lay the tile in accordance with your countertop unless it’s as level as possible. To figure this out, simply place a leveling tool horizontally on the countertop and look at the bubble. If you’re my father, that bubble needs to be 100% in the middle or it’s off. He’s a perfectionist, mind you, so I’ll say that if the bubble is within the two middle lines, it’s safe to say that everything will check out, at least to the naked eye.

If it’s not level, stand a tile at the lowest spot of the countertop and place a mark on the wall at the top of the tile. This should be your starting point. Using a level or some sort of straight edge, you can extend this line across your entire workspace and use it while you lay the tile. This is the surest way to make sure you don’t get way off. You can either lay in sections or by rows. Either way, it doesn’t matter, but it’s best to just take a few steps back and check out your work periodically to make sure you’re in line with everything. You can never be TOO careful, right? Also, you can do a dry run? And if you haven’t already guessed it, you’ll simply place the tiles along the wall from your starting point until you reach the end. This is another way to measure how many tiles you’ll need, and acts as the last step before you begin cutting! Don’t forget your spacers!

Tools and Materials

For a job like this, it’s nice to know that you have everything you need. Of course you’ll need the subway tile of your choosing, maybe some decorative tile for a more elaborate design. You’ll need the appropriately sized spacers for the tile that you’ve chosen. When it comes to the adhesive you’ll use to place the tile on the wall, you have a couple of options. You can either go with pre-mixed mastic or powder-based mortar. Now, my father and I strictly used powder-based mortar for ground tile and mastic for vertical installations.
subway tile
This is solely because mastic tends to be a thicker and is therefore easier to operate when working with walls. Doesn’t leave as much of a mess, either. You’ll need a trowel to apply the mortar. Personally, I’d go with a smaller inset for subway tile. Always keep a level close when dealing with tile, always. Then, of course, the wet tile saw to make the precise cuts you’ll need. Although, I’ll say this, usually when dealing with subway tile, cuts are rare and far between. It’s always good to have a warm bucket of water nearby with a sponge in case things to get messy. No one likes an overly sloppy working space, you know what I mean? And then, honestly, that should about cover it! You’re ready to install!

Installing Subway Tile

You’ve got everything ready and set to go, and now it’s time to get started! Begin by applying a smooth, buttery coat of your choice adhesive. A nice layer will do, you don’t want a lot of excess. Lay your tiles on it accordingly, pressing it flat against the wall, and holding it for a second. And then so on and so forth. I personally recommend taking it in sections, covering the entire wall, and then afterwards, using the level to make sure you’re on track. Take a few steps back and eye it closely to make sure that your lines are straight.
Once you’ve completed this process, you SHOULD wait 24 hours before touching it all. The time will solidify tile placement. Come in the next day, clean the grout lines with a razor blade to rid yourself of the excess mortar. Then it’s time to grout! With this type of tile, it’s usually best to go with unsanded grout. Now, grout can dry quickly, so be careful. Apply it generously to make sure you fill each and every line properly. Wait a couple of days after this step, usually around 48 hours, and then you’re ready to seal in your tile. This can be done with a sponge, or by hand. Either way, make sure to cover the entire surface, the tile and the grout lines. Wait another 24 hours, and there you have it, your beautiful backsplash.

Honestly, the hardest parts about this project are making sure your measurements are precise…and then not wanting to jump the gun during the waiting times. It’s crucial that you give the tile, grout, and sealer the appropriate amount of time to set itself before moving onto the next step. In any case, I hope this will help you during your kitchen remodel, and you’ve gained a little bit of knowledge of subway tile and its installation.

Trendiest Tile Flooring Options For Your Home

tile flooring
Tile flooring has and always will be an excellent flooring option for a number of reasons. You’ve got like Wood Look, Ledge Stone, Polished Porcelain and Decorative. And those are just to name a few. Today, I’d like to discuss some of the hottest trends out there right now, explain their uniqueness, and dive into some really cool designs that up-and-coming in the industry. Let’s get it!

Wood-Look Tile Flooring

tile flooring
Wood-Look tile has seriously been all the rage for the past couple of years, and I’ll be honest, folks, it’s not going anywhere. It’s incredibly durable, easy to clean, much cheaper than regular hardwood flooring, and it’s extremely versatile. When you use this material with an interesting, unique pattern, such as the herringbone (pictures above), it just sets it off. Also, wood-look tile can go just about anywhere in the household, a feature that regular hardwood flooring merely wishes it had.
tile flooring
Also, it’s pretty environmental. According to our friends at Daltile, nearly 20 million trees are cut down each year. Wood-look tile certainly doesn’t contribute to that number, and in its usage, as a whole we can decrease that number drastically. Just a little food for thought in that regard.

Cement-Look Tile Flooring

tile flooring
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Cement? Seriously? Isn’t that used in, like, garages and industrial factories, stuff like that? The answer is…yes, sure….and sort of. But you’d be surprised by how incredibly nice this material looks when there’s a unique design attached to it. Also, large format tiles works best for this material, specifically 32×32.
tile flooring

They also come in a variety of colors, like you’ll see above. I just think it’s insane how what was once purely used for industrial/commercial reasons is now an extremely hot commodity in the residential area, as well. Excellent stuff.

Brick-Look Tile Flooring

tile flooring

Easily my favorite of three hottest trends rights now, hands down. It has the look and feel of actually brick. Plus, we know that porcelain is an excellent tile flooring option, so this is almost a tried and true material of sorts.
tile flooring

I guess what really wows me about this particular material as a flooring option is the historical vibes I get from it. It’s like I’m in 18th century England, and quite honestly, it makes me want to write for days. It’s unique, it’s durable, and pretty quirky. Also, it’s to be noted that there’s a particular material, aged brick, that has seemed to rise in popularity.

So, there you have it! Three extremely popular, extra unique tile flooring options that have continued to drop jaws across the nation. Another side note, one of the main reasons for the fame is because you’re getting the look and feel of the material it mimics without the high price of labor difficulty. It’s a win/win all around.

Framing your windows is an excellent way to add elaborate detail to an otherwise plain feature. You can frame it entirely OR simply put up a piece of moulding at the top to give it a refined look. remodeling ideas

4. Apply a Different Stain to a Wood Finish

If you’re like me, seeing the same color day in and day out can become a monotonous routine, but there’s always a way to break that slump. Simply apply a different colored stain of your choosing to the wood finishes in your home, like your bannister rails, cabinets, and trim! remodeling ideas

5. Chalkboard in your Kitchen

8. A Floor Renovation

This idea is great if you have carpet in certain parts of your house because getting rid of it is relatively simple as opposed to tile or hardwood floors. Good news! If this is something you’re looking for, we have a plethora of brilliant styles of tile and marvelous hardwood flooring to give your house the sophisticated look you’ve been looking for! remodeling ideas

9. Install a Backsplash

You can do so in your bathroom or kitchen, but either way, backsplashes add to the overall design of each. This addition is almost purely for functionality, but whoever said they wouldn’t use this if their house came with it is downright insane. Simply put, a pull-out kitchen sink makes doing that dreaded chore that much easier. A bit of technology that anyone could get behind, in my opinion. remodeling ideas

11. Liven the Atmosphere with Plants

Throw in some greenery around the house, and let nature run its course. It’s one thing to have added decor and make it your own style, but if there’s one element that you can never (usually) go wrong with, it’s having some plants around the house. In the corners or on the sink in the bathroom. remodeling ideas

12. Let there be Light!

Recessed lighting is truly brilliant. There aren’t any outrageous fixtures hanging from the ceiling. It’s just a small, circular instrument snuggled into the ceiling, and boy, can it emit some rays! When done right, it is magnificent. remodeling ideas

Cover pantries or closets with a Barn Door. At Builders Surplus, we love this door style, it’s rustic, it’s unique, and it’s relatively easy to install! remodeling ideas

Another favorite here at Builders Surplus, this style of tile is excellent for backsplashes, but the look, to me, is perfectly epitomized around a fireplace. There’s just something about the stone look by a fireplace that makes it warm and inviting. Can you say, “good book by the fire?” remodeling ideas

15. Switch out your Countertops

Now, I can understand if this seems a bit destructive, but in all actuality it’s not, and it doesn’t really matter which style you choose to upgrade them with, it will still be with it. Here at Builders Surplus, we have a number of options to choose from. Choices sure to spruce up your kitchens and baths in no time! remodeling ideas

18. Switch out your Door Hardware

These little mechanisms often go unnoticed, but I can assure you, as soon as you update them you’ll appreciate the look and functionality. This is another one of those easy remodeling ideas, for sure. remodeling ideas

Fact of the matter is, shingles fade over time. It is because of this that I suggest you look into a metal roof. Now, your first thought might be the sound of the rain pounding above you, but there are sound barriers that alleviate that nuisance. Above all, this is one of the more noticeable remodeling ideas because of its significance in curb appeal. remodeling ideas

21. Paint the Garage Floor

Unless it’s your thing, concrete can be kind of bleh. So the garage floor can be perceived as the usual, un-changing thing that you just merely have to deal with. But painting it completely changes the look of your garage. I should know, I did it last summer. It’s easy, pretty fun really, and extremely low-maintenance. remodeling ideas

22. Look at New Windows

Windows have been known to deteriorate over time, and once they do, they will give you nothing but problems. Take a good hard look at every window in the household and take note of air seeping through the seems. Also, it may just be time to update them. Bring in natural light in style! remodeling ideas

23. Get some New Light Switch Covers

Maybe you’ve just painted your walls, and Almond light switch covers just don’t seem to blend in with anything anymore. Or, you want to be quirky. There are tons of ideas and styles out there to add a gentle hue to your room. Make it your own! remodeling ideas   Wellborn Cabinets Shop

24. Put up a Skylight

Hands down one of my favorite remodeling ideas. If you’re a fan of natural light like I am then this is perfect for you. Bring the outside world in by installing one of these bad boys. I can promise you won’t regret it. remodeling ideas

But instead of rewiring for additional fixtures, we thought of another idea, one that we’ve used before in a bathroom and were mesmerized by the effect. A skylight. We installed a 14-inch skylight that provides the light output of 5 100w lightbulbs! Crazy, right? And it turned out beautiful. In fact, she told us a few days later that she doesn’t even have to turn on the kitchen lights in the daytime. Exceptional.

Pre-mixed Mastic vs. Powder Based Mortar

I’d like to dig into a construction element known as “mastic” today, and more specifically, the two forms it’s available in. If you’ve never heard of mastic, then you’re in for a little treat because it’s actually pretty neat stuff and has a variety of uses. Before I give too much away, let’s first discuss exactly what it is.

Mastic is an extremely strong adhesive most commonly used in a construction setting. It’s what builders use to seal windows, doors, cracks, but it’s most common usage is hidden beneath your feet. The substance is perfect for setting and bonding tile to concrete or underlayment board due to its properties. Once dried, it is nearly impossible to come off.

Trust me, I’ve had the honor of having to bust out a tiled floor that had been installed in a heavy traffic area for 20 years. Two words: Chisel and hammer. It’s 100% not how you want to spend a Saturday afternoon. Sounds pretty neat though, right? It’s origin is just as interesting. Mastic, coincidentally enough, derives from the resin of the “mastic” tree. Scientifically, this tree is named Pistacia lentiscus, and can be commonly found in the Mediterranean region, specifically Greece and Turkey. Now that you know a little bit more about it, let’s dig into the two forms.

Pre-mixed Mastic

Advantage:

In pre-mixed form, the adhesive tends to be a bit more solid, a little more consistent, making it easier to work with in most instances.

For example, if you’re installing tile for a standup shower, it would be more prudent to use the pre-mixed, so your material isn’t slopping around everywhere, creating waste.

Gravity can be a nuisance when doing projects like tiled showers or backsplashes in your kitchen and bathroom. If you’re not too careful, your workspace can resemble a typhoon rather quickly. And the cleanup is horrendous.

There’s also the convenience factor. When you purchase this kind of mastic, it’s literally ready to go. Take the lid off, grab your trowel, and get to work. It’s as simple as that, BUT like everything else, the convenience of it being pre-mixed comes at a cost.

Disadvantage:

Depending on where you go, the price comparison is going to be different, but generally speaking, pre-mixed is ALWAYS going to be more expensive. Covering the same amount of square feet, you can typically purchase a bucket of pre-mix for $35 and a bag of powder based mortar for around $16.

It also doesn’t dry as quickly as powder-based mortar, especially if you’re using large tiles. In my experience, we always let shower tiles dry for up to three days before we let the customers use it. Just to be safe. Another thing, if you have to “double float” an area on a wall or the floor because it’s not level, pre-mixed can be a bit of a pain.

Powder-based Mortar

Advantage:

When working with floor tile, powder-based mortar is MUCH easier to work with, especially when working with an uneven floor.

Since you have to mix before applying, you are in complete control over the consistency, allowing you to manipulate if you need a more solid foundation in a certain area, or something a bit “runnier” and easier to work with.

If you’ve ever worked with floor tile then you know exactly how difficult it can be to ensure that every piece is consistently level. No one wants a rocky road in their hallway. I’ve always found the mortar much easier to spread across larger surfaces.

Mastic is a gummy substance, and it can seem like you’re putting much more effort than you need to across a wider surface. With mortar, simply mix it so the consistency isn’t so dry, and it spreads like butter.

Obviously, there are a lot of factors that come into play here like room temperature, how level the surface is, what size or kind of tile you’re using. But for the most part, mortar is the way to go in larger areas. Also, it’s way cheaper than premixed mastic. There’s a reason why, though.

Disadvantage:

The process of making it can be crazily monotonous, not to mention messy. Plus, there’s the inconvenience of having to keep mixing when you’ve finished your last batch.

Maintaining the same consistency takes a bit of practice, as well. I can’t tell you how many head shakes or sighs of disapproval my father has given me because one batch it perfect in consistency and the next is terribly dry or way too runny. It does take practice, and I’ll go ahead and tell you, if you can’t stand the feeling of dry hands for hours on end, powder-based mortar is not for you. Just throwing that out there.

Using this form of tile adhesive takes some extreme precision, too. Not just in the aspect of consistency, but of neatness, as well. Long story short, things can get horrifyingly messy if you’re not used to it.

My dad and I have a very simple approach when it comes to using these two forms of tile adhesives. Simply stated, we use the premixed when we’re working vertically (shower tiles and backsplashes) and powder-based on horizontal surfaces (floor tile). We’ve done enough tile projects to know gravity can be your worse enemy.

They’re both outstanding products, really. It just depends on the type of work you’re doing and your personal preference. Much like Android vs. iPhone in that regard. Take your pick. Good luck on your tile project!

Small Bathroom: Choosing the Right Vanity & Tile

A small bathroom is one of the worst things on the planet. I remember the one in my first apartment, there was barely any space to move, you had to close the door to open the vanity cabinet but you also had to stand off to the side or sit on the toilet sideways so you didn’t hit your shins! There are many different factors that can keep someone from being able to do much about a small bathroom; whether it be that you’re stuck in an apartment and can’t make any structural changes or you own your own home, but you don’t have the budget to do a full bathroom remodel at the moment.
Small Bathroom: Monochromatic Color Scheme
Updating your tile and replacing your vanity are a couple of the easiest and most inexpensive ways that you can make your bathroom appear more open. We’ve got some tips and tricks on how you can utilize these to make your cramped bath appear “bigger on the inside.”
Shop-Now-Vanities

Be Basic

Simplicity is key when you’re wanting to make a small bathroom feel bigger! Skip the highly decorative and opt-in for more simplistic shapes and styles. In a space like this, less is more.
The subway tile look is super popular, and it’s a really basic look that’s also classy. However, what needs to be remembered with tile is size. Go for larger format tile – the less lines and grout, the better. This creates a longer line that isn’t broken up which makes the space appear larger because the pattern is continuous.
There are two ways to go with vanities her. You can choose a pedestal sink and be really minimal, but if you must have some storage space choose a floating single-sink vanity or one with open shelves instead of cabinets or drawers. A floating vanity will open up the floor space, which breaks up the space less, while an open vanity (shelves instead of drawers) moves your eye through the room and makes you think about what you really need in your bath.
Small Bathroom: Floating Vanity

Color is Key

This goes along with keeping it simple. When it comes to color in a small space you want to choose a single color or monochromatic theme. Brighter colors work best in small spaces, especially whites – plus white is classy!
Select bright, glossy white tile or backsplash that is bigger than the palm of your hand at least (remember go big or go home with the whole tile selection). If you have a light color scheme that isn’t white then keep your tile selection in that hue, it’ll still make the room feel bigger. However, it’s a little more complicated where you already have a dark bath. When you have a dark space that you can’t completely overhaul you can still choose a lighter wall tile or backsplash. Remember, you want to try to break up the colors and patterns as little as possible!
Small Bathroom: Contrasting Vanity
Lighter vanities are often less popular because bathrooms are already pretty bright so a vanity is the perfect piece to contrast lighter colors! This is where you can have some fun if you want to. Keep the vanity white (or whatever single color the rest of your bathroom is) especially if it’s one with drawers and cabinets, this breaks up the space less and makes a small bathroom feel larger. If you think you can spare to have some color feel free to contrast the room with a darker vanity, however, this will work best with an open style shelf vanity.

10 Miracle Remodeling Products To Save LOADS of Time

Why do I care if remodeling products will save me time? You may have heard that time is money. But really, time is everything. When have you ever been able to spend money to get more time back? Or paid money to spend time with a loved one who is no longer with us? My guess – never. That’s because time is the most valuable asset that we have, so how we use our time can be one of the most important choices in life. The products below are remarkable. They’re skilled at saving you time so that you can get back to doing what you love to do (even if that’s more remodeling)! Some products might cost you a bit more, but the time they will save are well worth it.

Our Top 10 Time Saving Remodeling Products

Permabase Backer Board Builders Surplus Louisville Newport Cincinnati

1.Permabase Board

Permabase is one of those products you wished you had known about before you did your bathroom tile, or kitchen tile, or tile backsplash! Inside Permabase you’ll find Styrofoam beads. These beads allow the board to absorb water at a slower rate. This means that you can spreasd your thinset over your entire (or almost entire) tiling area at one time, and proceed to knock it out. Typically, you have to spread your thinset over very small areas because it will dry up at a pretty fast rate. Doing it this way can be very time consuming.  With Permabase you can thinset once, and focus on flying through your tile!
Pre Mixed Grout Builders Surplus Cincinnati, Newport, Louisville

2. Premixed Grout

Grout can be a pain in the butt when it comes to remodeling products. Getting the consistency right is never easy. You need to make sure it is free of any lumps and is the consistency of toothpaste. It takes about 10 minutes to mix yourself, if you get it right the first time. I’ve constantly had to add more water, stir for a while, add more water, then it’s too thin, add more grout, keep stirring. If it dries up, you have to start from scratch. Premixed grout save time and hassle. Pop it open and get to grouting! You’ll be done before you know it!

Shop Backsplash Tile Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

3. Premixed Tile Adhesive

Premixed tile adhesive is one of my favorite time saving remodeling products. Mixing Tile adhesive can be a fairly time consuming job. In order to mix tile adhesive, you need water, thinset mortar, safety gloves, glasses, drill machinery and mixing palette, bucket, and about 20 minutes. If you don’t use it quick enough, it will harden. If you don’t use it all in one day, you have to throw it out. That can be a lot of waste! Premixed tile adhesive is a great solution. You pop it open, and begin. You can close the bucket when you’re done and reuse it the next day. You’re saving time, and eliminating waste. When you eliminating waste saves even more time having to remix the next day! The cost is a bit higher, but the time and effort it saves is worth every penny! Both of our Builders Surplus locations sell premixed tile adhesive, so if you’re in the Louisville, Cincinnati or Newport areas, stop by and pick up a bucket!
rectified tile builders surplus cincinnati newport louisville

4. Rectified Tile

While we’re on the subject of tile time saving remodeling products, we can’t leave out rectified tile! Typical tile will vary in length and thickness. This is due to the fact that tile shrinks about 25% when it is baked. If you need a 12″ tile, it starts at 16″, goes into the oven, and comes out ROUGHLY 12″. Because of this, you’ll spend a lot of time using spacers, leveling out each piece of tile individually, making sure that they all appear level. You use grout to “cheat the system” and make everything appear the same. Rectified tile is cut to exact measurements in length and width, meaning you’ll have no lippage (tile jutting out a bit more than others off the wall or floor) and all of your lines will be exact. Rectified tile can be more expensive, but you’ll save money on grout, will complete your tile project much faster, and will get a much more clean look in the end. If you’re looking for rectified tile in Cincinnati, Newport or Louisville, look no further.
installing-split-jamb-prehung-interior-doors Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

5. Split jambs on doors

Split jambs for doors can be a real life saver, especially in older homes. With a typical jamb, it is a fixed width. If you go to install a new door in your home, but your wall varies in thickness, which can happen more often than you think, you will have to build up your wall. If it’s too thick, you could have to feather it out. Both of which can be costly if you hire it out, or time consuming if you do it yourself. Split jambs are adjustable, so you can create the exact width that you need. The pieces fit directly in to each other, and come with casing already on them, which is another great time saver! They can be more expensive than fixed jambs, but if you don’t have the perfect door frame, it will save you money in the end.
prefinished hardwood flooring Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

6. Pre-finished Hardwood

Pre-finished hardwood may sound like a no-brainer, but not everyone has jumped on the bandwagon! You’ll pay more for pre-finished hardwood, but the time and effort you’ll save can be drastic. Unfinished hardwood starts at $1.39/sq. ft. at Builders Surplus, where pre-finished usually starts at about $.50 more, but staining and having to polyurethane, especially if it’s a big project, can take hours. That’s time you could be spending with your family, or on that getaway with friends!
Coretec-Plus-Flooring Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

7. Corked back COREtec

COREtec is one of the coolest flooring products we offer at Builders Surplus in Louisville and Newport, which also serves Cincinnati! One feature of the COREtec plus that we absolutely love is the fact that it comes with a cork backing attached to it! This means you don’t have to buy underlayment, which can cost about $.50 or more /sq. ft! You also save time putting down the underlayment.  Not only that, but COREtec’s cork backing is a great sound barrier, making your home ultra quiet. No more pounding footprints down the hall, or moisture seeping in underneath your flooring! It acts as an incredible moisture barrier.
Crown Moulding Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

8. 16′ Moulding and Crown

Crown moulding is one of those remodeling products that can elevate the look of your space with ease. Most Crown Moulding comes in 8′, 10′ or sometimes 12′ pieces. At Builders Surplus, we sell 16′ pieces of crown and moulding. That means you make fewer cuts, get your moulding up quicker, and it looks much more polished as well.

9. High Quality Paint

High quality paint can seem like a money trap. Why spend $30 more per gallon when you can get the same color for less? Well, higher quality paints, like Sherwin Williams, will provide you brighter pigments that will make for easy application, greater durability, and higher color retention. When paining something like your kitchen cabinets, you’ll be looking at those daily, so better color can make a big difference. The binders in these paints make them more resistant to cracking, blistering and peeling. We suggest you put out a little bit more cash for a better result. You can also get better coverage with most of these paints, meaning less coats, which surprise, saves time! Some remodeling products can easily justify their price.
Mesh Back Tile Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

10. Mesh Back Tile

I know our list of remodeling products has featured a lot of tile time savers, but we can’t help it that they’ve come up with some pretty great solutions! Mesh back tile is a great way to save time on your backsplash tile or wall tile. Mesh back tile comes in sheets, usually about a square foot. The pattern is perfectly in place with a mesh backing on it. Add your thinset and place your sheet. They line up with each other perfectly so it takes a lot of the science out of it. Some mesh back tiles require grout and some don’t. If you find one that doesn’t, you’ll save money there as well! Mesh back tiles can actually be very cost effective depending on the style that you choose.
These top 10 remodeling products are sure to make you happy. So knock out your projects quickly and enjoy your new space –  and your extra time!

Choosing Wall Tile to Match Bathroom Vanities

Hola! Alright, so you have your brand new, fresh-out-of-the-wrapping bathroom vanity. It’s placed properly, fastened tight to the interior wall, and maybe you’ve even hooked up the plumbing to the sink along with the countertop. In essence, you’ve never been more excited to wash your hands before in your life. After doing so, that next thought springs into your head, the next step to really put that finishing touch on your vanity – what wall tile will look best? Well, luckily, I’m here to tell you of a couple of options to choose from. And it can be as simple (or as complex) as you’d like it to be!

Contrasting Light Tile to Dark Vanity

If you really want to accentuate your vanity, I’d suggest going with a light-colored tile. The pictures above demonstrate how a lighter tile can make your vanity pop, giving it the proper attention it needs. Contrast in any design platform plays with a viewer’s eyes a bit and is perfect for redirecting or emphasizing a particular piece. Notice how the wall tile from the picture on the left contains smaller dark tiles, as well. We’ll get to this a bit later, but it brings out the darker tone of the vanity, giving a nice blend to the whole bathroom. The picture in the middle sports a classy white tile, and the vanity’s contrast sets it apart, but it works! Never be afraid in the effects of contrast. It adds visual interest and appeals to the eye. Uniformity and blending definitely has its perks, but this design element is simply too attractive to dismiss. Literally.

A Blending of Colors

Sometimes going with the grain just makes sense. As you can see, the pictures above exemplify that statement perfectly. Matching wall tile with the color of your vanity gives your bathroom design a sense of unity and can make for a stunning visual effect. The first picture displays a marvelous, antique-style vanity. The soft brown hue of the wall tile allows the entire display to streamline the eye’s focus in unison. In essence, it’s a beautiful blend of style and color. The picture in the middle is my personal favorite, though. But I’m a sucker for the natural pine stain color, so there’s no surprise there. Notice how the wall tile really hones that color in and makes it shine. Now, earlier I told you how a wall tile can bring out a color in a vanity. The picture on the right is a prime example of how a subtle blend between the vanity and wall color can make your primary color jump out at you! Like an exclamation point. At Builder’s Surplus, we offer a cast of tile brands that will help you pull of this look. We’ll help you in the design process and make sure your vision becomes a reality.

The Products to Choose

Daltile is one of the best products in the business, in my opinion, but you don’t have to take my word for it. You’ve just glanced at their product, and I’m willing to bet you liked what you saw. But, see, that’s the thing about Daltile – there’s so much to choose from. I think we can all agree that when it comes to home restoration/renovation, variety is essential, right? Daltile’s selection is bar none, yes, but it’s the quality that really sets this product from the rest. Established since 1947, the company has acquired a tremendous reputation for their innovative ideas, and it’s directly reflected in their designs. And you know what the best part is? This awesomely legit product is available through special order at Builders Surplus. Come talk to us in person or set something up so we can get things rolling on your bathroom remodel! Highland Park Tile: Classic Beauty

Highland Park backsplash tile is one of my absolute favorite tile lines. This line embodies classic style and cutting edge trends all in one beautifully tiled package. When you are deciding on backsplash tile for your kitchen or bathroom, you should definitely look into highland park backsplash tile before making any final decisions. Highland Park backsplash tile is GREENGUARD indoor air quality certified and is designed to last.
Shop Highland Park Backsplash Tile
Highland park offers five color collections, including whisper white, antique white, artisan taupe, dove grey and morning fog. These colors are in style at the moment but will definitely stand the test of time, as they are all appealing neutrals with a little something extra to make them stand out. No matter what your cabinet color, wall color, or floor color, you can choose one of these five classic colors and can be sure that it will coordinate perfectly.
Within each color family you’ll find up to 8 styles: The classic 3×6 subway tile, the up-in-coming 4×12 subway tile, a trendy hexagon tile or elongated hexagon, the ultra desirable arabesque pattern tile, the stunning mini-brick tile, the new classic diamond pattern, the stylish arched herringbone, and your additional quarter round, pencil or crown molding tile for your edges.
Below are just a few of our favorites from the Highland Park Collection! Let us know your favorite in the comments!

Highland Park Dove Grey

Pictured above is the highland park dove grey handcrafted 3×6 subway tile. As you can see, it is lighter on the edges to give it a more dramatic look. It also features a beautiful crackle finish that definitely separates it from the rest. You won’t see this in most homes and it will be a conversation starter and focal piece in your home.

The Highland Park Dove Grey Arabesque tile is one of my favorites. This look is stunning and so unique. The arabesque pattern is so important in design right now and will continue to be for some time. It can go with virtually every cabinet style and always creates an ultra-elegant look.

Highland Park Whisper White

The Highland Park whisper white collection features a lot of classic styles. Above you’ll see the arabesque and below the hexagon. Hexagon is on the rise in terms of trendiness and can be seen everywhere right now, from the largest tile, remodeling and flooring conventions in the world, to the homes of many. It is another style that can transcend any time period and gives a clean, fresh look to you space.

The antique white elongated hexagon is truly a unique backsplash tile option. This transitional look can coordinate with a lot of color options and styles. This honeycomb style is growing in popularity and gives it a very cottage feel.

The handcrafted 3×6 subway tile backsplash is one of our top sellers. The wavy appearance sets it apart from your traditional subway tile and the artisan look really comes through.

5 Ways to Make Your Galley Kitchen Feel Huge

Galley kitchens have become one of the few things to make home buyers and owners cringe (besides shag carpeting.) They are known for being closed-off, unwelcoming, and dark. In the age where everyone wants an open concept floor plan, the galley kitchen is quickly added to the cons list when someone is looking for a renovation project. But what if we told you that you can turn your galley kitchen into a space that you won’t dread working in, or spending time in? Here are five easy steps that will add that wow factor to your galley kitchen's small space!

Galley Kitchen Must Have's To Maximize Space

Utilizing Light

The first step is allowing natural light to come into your kitchen. For those of you with a space that has a window, do away with the curtains and blinds. A bare window will open up your kitchen without the demolition of taking out a wall. And if you don’t like a naked window? Dress it up with some trim and add small succulents for an additional touch of green!

Do Away With Dark

Dark cabinetry can be beautiful, but it can also make your kitchen appear much smaller. Think of your galley like a photograph: if you matte a picture in black, it is going to seem more enclosed. So open up your space with our Wellborn cabinets! They are the perfect addition to any kitchen, including a galley, and offer a variety of tremendous selection of hardwoods. And for that extra depth: select cabinets with glass-fronts.

Regain Space

Another easy way to make a galley kitchen appear stifling is by decluttering your countertops. Employ your cabinets–they are there for storage! If you absolutely must leave an appliance out, make sure it has clean lines and a minimalist design.

Pops of Personality

Glass and textured backsplash can add that special dimension and personality to a kitchen. Today, there is so much backsplash available, but for a galley kitchen, we suggest reflective surfaces, geometric patterns, or unique colors. The reflective surfaces definitely increase the appearance of space in the room, the same way that adding big mirrors in a small space give it a larger feel.

A small space like a galley kitchen can easily be overwhelmed by the type of lighting you choose. Small pendant lights and recessed canned lighting are the way to go when you are switching up designs. They do not take up a bunch of room and leave the headspace of your kitchen open and airy. There are so many unique and beautiful pendant lights available as well that will really add a unique touch to your space. Working with the length of the room instead of against it also makes the space feel larger, and spreading out pendant lights in a galley kitchen is a perfect way to do that. I hope you’ve found these tips helpful! If you have any more questions on how to maximize a galley kitchen, comment below!
