Today we’ll cover the main cabinet door styles and how do decide which one is right for you.

Traditional Overlay/ Partial Overlay Cabinet Door Styles: $

Traditional overlay, often called “partial overlay” or “standard overlay” cabinet doors, are the most common style of kitchen cabinet. These are nice looking cabinets at a great price. In this style of cabinet, the doors and drawers cover only part if the cabinet frame. They are mounted on the face of the cabinet box. They will have a little less storage space than the other cabinet styles. While they may be the least expensive, it doesn’t mean the are not a great option. Some people don’t find them quite as attractive as the other options, but it’s all about personal preference and how much you are willing to invest. These doors are least expensive because the door is smaller, meaning that it uses less wood. They are often composed of MDF or wood veneer which costs less than solid wood. The rails and stiles are small and error in production would not be easy to notice. This means they can be made on a high speed production line, lowering the cost.
standard-overlay-cabinet-door-styles

Full Overlay Cabinet Door Styles: $$

Full overlay doors are cabinet doors that cover the entire width of the cabinet, as shown below. The full overlay door style gives cabinets a more custom look than their traditional overlay counterpart. They will always require cabinet hardware because there is only ¼ inch of space between doors and drawers, so opening them without hardware is not an option. A benefit of full overlay cabinet doors is that you can store larger items in them because they do not have a vertical face frame stile between the two doors. They don’t need to work around that center style like they would in a traditional overlay cabinet. Full overlay cabinets are going to be more expensive than traditional overlay doors because its a larger door, which means there is more wood required to make it. Full overlay cabinets are typically solid wood panels and not MDF, which is another factor in cost. Because the doors will be right next to each other, there is less room for error in the manufacturing process, again, adding a bit to the cost.

Slab Cabinet Door Styles: $$$

A slab door style, also referred to as flat panel doors, have a completely flat door panel that is not raised or recessed at all. It doesn’t have arches and has a very simple design. A slab door style is typically used in modern or contemporary kitchens or bathrooms because of the clean lines. You will need cabinet hardware for slab doors. The other features that you choose will play a large part in enhancing the look of the slab door. Slab doors are typically solid wood, and you will rarely see an MDF product in a slab. Because of this, a slab door is on the more expensive side. Because it is one solid piece of wood, that makes it harder to manufacture. The wood has to be perfectly flat and cannot bend and warp. Grains of the wood typically need to go in one direction, which makes this a more expensive manufacturing process. Any error would be noticeable on a flat panel door, so they cannot be produced as quickly.
slab-door

Inset Cabinet Door Styles: $$$$

Inset cabinet door styles are different than the above three because they feature doors and drawers that fit inside of the cabinet face frame openings. This type of cabinet construction gives a full view of the cabinet frame, with only small amounts of spacing or gaps between each cabinet component. Inset doors are going to be your most expensive option. The doors are extremely high quality because there is literally no room for error. Because they are sitting inside the frame, they cant be effected by heating or cooling cycles. Any inperfection in manufacturing the door is very noticable. The doors are very high quality. They have to be made of heavier materials that are less likely to warp. Becuase of this, manufacturing cannot be done in mass prodcution and is a very precise process. Inset cabinet doors are beautiful and distinct!

Beach Themed Bathroom Design

Today, we’ll be covering how to achieve a beach themed bathroom. On Tuesday, I returned from an incredible vacation to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and it has been a tough transition. Going from the Caribbean vibe everywhere I look to a void of ocean style has taken some adjustment. When I’m in a tropical location, my mood is brighter, my laugh is louder, my stress level is non-existant. That’s when I decided that when you can’t be in the tropics, you need to bring the tropics home to you by creating a beach themed bathroom!
There are many ways that you can take island style into your bathroom, a place that is built for relaxation. This room is already full of water & tile, two of the main components of the beach look, so you can create the look you’re going for by making a few smart design decisions.

Beach Themed Bathroom Design: The Top 5 Elements

1. Tropical Tile

The first, and possibly best way to bring the Caribbean feel into your bathroom is by using interesting tile choices. Bathrooms by the beach are usually heavily tiled, to help with the cleanup of sand and water. Tile is a big design element in many other rooms in the tropics as well. Lively patterns or ocean inspired colors or patterns usually work very well to help you achieve the look you’re going for.

This bathroom just screams beach themed. The blue green is very reminiscent of water, and added with the neutral tile accents, the desired look is achieved.

This is another great tile choice. The mosaic is often found in beach locations, and the movement in the pattern again reminds you of the feel of water.

This is my favorite tile choice, which very closely resembles the bathroom in my Jamaican paradise. Who can be sad looking at that pattern and gorgeous tropical blue? The open feel of the shower also gets you in the topical mood, blending outside with inside.

2. Foliage In The Bathroom

Jamaica means “The Land of Wood & Water” for obvious reasons. It is surrounded by water and has heavy forests all through the island. I love the green of the land paired with the blue of the sea. To do this is a non tropical location, you can simply add foliage and plant accents to your bathroom space to bring you back to the place that you call paradise.

This is one of the best that I’ve seen. The sanded bottom with the tree stump steps is genius. The open top also adds to the outdoor feel, but you can create this by painting your ceiling a bright white or even sky blue and adding faux posts. A simple wooden table acts as the perfect place for products.

This darker blue bathroom still evokes everything that makes me love the ocean. They have a limited amount of foliage in this bathroom, but it definitely does the trick. The taller plant is typical of what you would find in a beach location. The coral on the wall and shells on the sink top it off perfectly.

This is absolutely amazing and definitely a favorite of mine. The moss wall gives it the truly tropical style. My resort had an enormous wall of moss and several vertical gardens, so this look would be the perfect thing to remind me of the place I love so much. You can find out how to create your own moss wall here.

3. Perfect Paint Palettes

Paint color is another perfect way to create the beach themed bathroom you’ve been dreaming of. The bathrooms below don’t go crazy with tile, just have the right paint colors with a few perfect beach themed accessories to tie it all together. Simple can be just as effective.

The light blues of the water & sky paired with the sandy color of the flooring, vanity and countertop are perfect.

These two similarly colored bathrooms add the perfect touch: beachy bead board. This is a simple but elegant touch that reminds us of effortless ocean style. Throw in perfect mirror & you’re all set!

4. Vessel Sinks

As we covered in a recent bathroom design trends blog, the vessel sink is very popular this year. However, even if it goes out for bathrooms of all styles, it will always remain a beach bathroom favorite. Something about this look reminds me of island life.

Glass vessel sinks will always remain a popular choice for this look. Porcelain is also another very popular choice.

5. Nautical Neutrals

The sand is what makes the beach, the beach. Feeling it beneath our feet, warm with the sun, is one of those simple joys in life that you just can’t get anywhere else. Taking sandy colors from the beach to your bathroom is a quick way to turn your powder room into paradise. The two below have done a great job of making an understated color the perfect backdrop in their bathroom. Again, adding a few nautical accents makes a big difference in giving you the theme you’re looking for.

Your Exclusive Guide To Bathroom Faucet Styles

BATH FAUCET HEADER

Selecting a bathroom sink can influence the style and personality of your entire bathroom. Your style will set the tone and create an ideal environment for one of the most used rooms in your home. This may seem like sensory overload if you are new to home renovating, but rest assured we have everything you need to know right here.  Since the sink is probably the most used fixture in your bathroom, becoming familiar with the faucet style options that adorn it will help you determine which style is best suited for your needs, your home, and your budget.

Becoming familiar with bathroom faucet styles will help you determine which style is best suited for your needs, your home, and your budget.

Whether your bathroom faucet style is traditional, contemporary or completely radical, you will find diversity in the many styles available. Before you choose a bathroom faucet style, you will first need to determine where to start.

Some Questions To Answer Before You Begin:

-Will you be using an existing sink or will you be purchasing a brand new one?

-Where is the faucet opening?

-Have you taken measurements of the size of your bathroom?

-What kind of finish or color will be in your bathroom?

-Determine the number of holes in your sink.  This vanity and faucet website has a guide if you are unsure.

-Have you determined how much your budget will allow you to spend?

-Are you going to be using a pedestal, undercounter, drop in or vessel sink?

Three Basic Features Of Bathroom Faucets:

1. Configuration:

The configuration of a faucet refers to how it will be mounted. Bathroom sink faucets are generally either wall mounted or actually mounted on the sink. Configuration also references the number of faucet handles, and how many holes will be necessary in the sink.

  • Centerset faucets are constructed so that the distance between the handles is 4”. Sometimes the base unit of a centerset faucet may even have the handles and the spout combined together. This is a great option if space is limited in your home or you have a small bathroom.
  • Single Hole faucets combine the handle and the spout and require just one plumbing hole in the back of the sink. Some styles have been designed to restrict how much hot water is mixed with the cold, which significantly reduces the risk of scalding small children or elderly users (not to mention is a major energy saver).
  • Widespread faucets have three separate pieces – hot and cold water handles that are at least 6″ apart and independent of the spout. This type of faucet works best with three-hole sinks and is preferable when you have more bathroom and countertop space to work with.
  • Wall-mounted faucets attach to the wall behind the sink and work best for freestanding and vessel sinks that sit on top of a bath vanity surface. These sinks require faucets with long spouts so that the extended reach ensures adequate clearance. These will not work well for sinks with predrilled holes  because they require a separate valve and drain to be installed.

2. Valve Technology

The valve technology of a faucet is what actually controls the flow of water. The valve setup is the component that does all the work so how it is designed will have a direct impact on how well it performs for you. There are 4 possible forms of valve technology that a bathroom sink faucet may use. It is important to consider the kind of valve technology used because it plays a key role in reliability. The bottom line is that reliability equates to how long the faucet works before it starts dripping and requiring repair.

  • Compression valves are the most minimalistic when it comes to valve options. These bath faucets control the flow of water through the use of a screw feature (found in the handle) that compresses a seal against a rubber washer. While they are the simplest form of faucet valve, they are also the quickest to either wear out or require maintenance.
  • Ball valves are used with single lever faucets and feature a slot that controls the mixture and amount of hot and cold water allowed through the spout. They have a rotating metal or plastic ball that will regulate the amount of incoming water. With just one part that moves around, the chances of it breaking down or malfunctioning are significantly reduced.
  • Cartridge valves are used with rubber rings that utilize a hollow sleeve in order to control the flow of water. These faucets are extremely reliable but they will occasionally the seals may require replacements.
  • Ceramic Disc valves make use of two firm and polished ceramic disks that slide relative one another. The motion between them controls the opening or restricting the flow of water basically making them maintenance free. These are generally more expensive but they are considered the most durable of any other faucet valve.

3. Color & Finish

The finish on a bath faucet is the outer surface that makes up the exterior. Aside from being a protective barrier, the finish also gives the faucet it’s color. This is where your individual style begins to play an important role in your decision making. Most designers and home owners prefer to coordinate the faucet color and finish with the rest of the fixtures in the bathroom. However, color choices aside, the type of finish on the faucet and how it’s applied are more important points to consider. Most finishes are very durable and scratch resistant while others are known to be spot resistant which simplifies cleaning. The outcome depends on the manufacturer of the faucet and how much you are willing to spend. Some of the more common colors and finishes are:

  • Black
  • Brass (antique or polished)
  • Bronze
  • Chrome (matte, brushed or polished)
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Stainless Steel
  • Nickel
  • Iron

Choosing a color and finish is ultimately going to come down to your own personal appeal but intuitively you know what you like better than anyone else.  Since you will likely be using and touching it several times a day, you should be able to let your senses lead you in the right direction.

Additional And Random Things to Consider:

  • Choose your faucet and sink together, if possible. Faucets and sinks are obviously interdependent on one another and it’s important that they are compatible.
  • Your bath faucet should be a match by fitting your everyday needs. If you are unsure what your needs may be, take some time to evaluate exactly who and how your bathroom will be used.
  • We have a team of in-house interior designers available to consult with you should you need assistance planning your remodel or would like to brainstorm about a different project.

  • Aside from the plethora of styles and finish options available in this day and age, there is a wide variety of technological options for faucets besides just navigating and delivering water. Things like a hands-free operating faucets, touch-sensitive controls, lead-free construction and pull-out spouts (excellent faucet for impromptu family water fights).  Make sure you take some time to check out these innovative bath faucet styles.

Bathroom Vanities: The Best New Trends

Bathroom vanities are a necessity in any bathroom. However, it’s up to you to figure how you want to work this functional piece into your space. Below we’ve listed some of the new trends that we’ve seen in bathroom vanity design. Some of these trends might be fleeting, while others might be here to stay, but we’ll leave those decisions up to you!

1. Bathroom Vanities Painted in Custom Colors

One way to make sure bathroom vanities stand out from the rest is to paint them a custom color. The coral in the bathroom below is so eye catching, without being overbearing. The graphic wallpaper ties the whole look together. This can be somewhat difficult on an already finished vanity, but it can be done with sanding & priming. Our suggestion is to take an unfinished bath vanity that comes ready to pain, like this one here.

2. Coastal Vibes Bathroom Vanities

The ocean is the inspiration for many things, such as art, clothing, and furniture. The thought of the coast brings feelings of calm, serenity, and peace, not to mention a little fun. This is exactly the reason that a coastal feel fits perfectly in the bathroom. A bathroom is the space where serenity is of the utmost importance, and this look won’t soon go out of style. This is a custom bathroom cabinet set from Wellborn Cabinets, in the Harbour Style.

3. Vessel Sink Sensation

Vessel sinks are the new trend. For many years, drop in sinks were extremely popular, but that style has taken a serious downturn and has been replaced with the vessel and undercount sink as well. There are many different styles of vessel sinks to choose from, each with their own benefits and fitting various tastes. Glass will aways be a popular choice, however, some of my favorites are listed below. The first being chiseled granite vessel sinks. This is a very high end look with a rough around the edges feel (no pun intended). This will fit in the classiest of bathrooms or just as perfectly in one with a casual vibe. We have a great selection of chiseled granite vessels sinks in our Louisville & Newport locations.

Another incredibly unique option is the hammered copper vessel sink. This it an amazing touch to any bathroom, rustic, elegant, eclectic or farmhouse. It will always be a conversation piece and serves as a piece of art as well as a functional piece of plumbing.

4. Gray-teness

Every bathroom is in search of greatness. Fortunately, gray is the find of the season. Not only are gray kitchen cabinets the premiere paint palette this year, but gray vanities have been making a resurgence as well. There is something about the color gray that calms, while remaining visually interesting. I love the elegance that grey vanities offer without being too feminine. We offer a classic style, American Shaker, in a lovely gray finish, in a variety of sizes. 5. Classic Pedestal Style

Pedestal sinks have come in and out of style through the beginning of bathroom design history. This is such a simple design statement that can literally fit any and every style, any and every space. Classic white porcelain bathroom vanities will coordinate with any color or finish of tile and will stand the test of time. I love the way they have used a flashy wallpaper and interesting tile choice to take this simple piece to the next level.

Furniture style bathroom vanities are very in right now. While they may have a higher price tag, you definitely get what you pay for. They have top quality construction, lots of storage, and typically come equipped with solid surface countertops. These furniture style bathroom vanities will last for years and years, and you’ll stay happy with them in your space for just as long. Below you’ll find a gorgeous James Martin Vanity. 7. Unexpected Pieces & Rustic Design

This rustic bathroom is to die for. They have really stayed the course in designing a cabin feel that seems devoid of modern day luxuries, but actually has everything you need; light, water, mirror, sink & vanity. You could literally build this bathroom vanity yourself and find an awesome piece to create your new sink out of!  This style will not fit in every home, but for those that it will, I would definitely encourage you to use this as a piece of inspiration.
