Bathroom Remodel: Where to begin?

A bathroom remodel is a pretty large project, especially if you’ve never done one before. You may have no idea where to even START, not to mention what to do when you actually begin! Well, today, I’m going to touch on the first steps you should take when starting a bathroom remodel.

The First Steps in a Bathroom Remodel

Budgeting:

There are a few places you could start the process, but I find that budgeting is the most practical. It will dictate several other factors, so knowing it as soon as possible will help a lot. In budgeting for a bathroom remodel, we suggest you ask yourself if you’re staying in your home 5 years or more. If the answer is no, you’ll spend less than if your answer is yes. You now need to know your homes value, so that you can do your budgeting formula. If you’re staying more than 5 years, spend up to 5-7% of your homes value on your bathroom. This could vary depending on WHICH bathroom you’re remodeling. If you’re moving, you will spend 3-5%. The next step in budgeting is deciding how to pay. Cash is king, obvioulsy. You’ll save money on interest. We also offer several financing options that are 0% interest for 6 months or more. You could do credit card, but interest rates are very high. Another popular option is home equity line of credit. budgeting for a bathroom remodel

Finding Your Style:

Finding your Style is next on my list. This is the fun part! You may have some idea of what you want, or none at all, but either way you slice it, you can’t successfully create a beautiful bathroom if you’re not 100% sure of your style. There are many different styles you can choose from: Modern, Contemporary, Traditional, Transitional, Eclectic, Farmhouse, Rustic, Craftsman, Mediterranean, Coastal, and more. Spend time doing research on sites like Houzz.com. You can search by room and then by style, adding price criteria, color criteria and more. This will help you get a real feel for WHAT the styles look like. I also suggest that you visit Pinterest. Create a bathroom board and search something general like “bathroom design”. Then, start saving any bathroom you love. Odds are, when you go back to your board and see what you saved, you’ll see several trends. Do they all have subway tile? Are they brightly colored? Do they have white vanities? This is a good indication of what you’re drawn to. Knowing your style will make it so much easier to work with a designer or to find the products yourself.

DIY or DIFM?

Do it yourself, or Do it for me? Which kind of person are you? For a bathroom remodel, we HIGHLY suggest the DIFM approach, using a professional. A bathroom remodel includes a lot of plumbing, so it can go wrong, very wrong, pretty quickly. Doing a tiled shower also has a lot of waterproofing precautions that need to be taken to ensure it won’t cause mold, water damage and rot in the future. Analyze your skills HONESTLY and decide which route you want to take. You can always do some small tasks to save money and leave the larger tasks to the pros.

Taking Measurements:

Taking measurements is an important part of a bathroom remodel. Your measurements will dictate which types of products will work for your space, not just the size. Some measurements may show that only custom order products will do, while others may be perfect for standard sizes. It’s important to know that from the beginning. It will also help you analyze your budget. It you need a HUGE vanity, maybe you could spend a little less on the top. You’ll need to take measurements of your Floor, Toilet, Vanity/Top, and Shower or Tub. If you’re not sure how to measure, click here for more details.

Working with a Designer:

Many people assume that there is an additional cost in working with a bathroom designer for their bathroom remodel. There can be, but not when working with Builders Surplus. We highly recommend working with a bathroom designer for a few reasons.
  1. It’s Free. So why not?
  2. They know ALL the products and materials – pros, cons and price points
  3. They are trained to spot problems before they occur
  4. They are experienced in managing the process – they know which steps need to come before others to save time and money.
You can definitly do a bathroom without a designer, but you will most likely spend more time and more money that you would have otherwise, so why not schedule your free design consultation today? I hope this has been helpful in laying out the initial steps that need to be taken before you actually get started on your bathroom remodel. Let us know if you have any additional questions below!

Homearama 2017: Top Bathroom Trends

One of my favorite events of the year is Homearama, which comes every July. Homearama is an event featuring many new construction homes, which showcases the latest and greatest trends in building and interior design. This is a great way to see what the hot items will be for the year, and see some of the incredibly beautiful spaces that the builders and designers put together.
Today, I’ll be showing you what we found to be the top bathroom trends at Homearama 2017 at Poplar Woods. If you’re in the market for a new construction home or remodeling your bathroom, you might be able to use some of these great ideas!

Homearama Bathroom Trends:

Freestanding Tubs

One of my absolute favorite trends in bathroom design from Homearama is the emergence of freestanding tubs. You typically won’t see standard tubs in master bathrooms anymore. They’re really only found in kids bathrooms these days. I for one don’t mind a bit. They’re larger than most regular tubs. They’re called soaker tubs for a reason, you can really stretch out and they are much more comfy on your back.  They also look like an art piece in your bathroom!

Walk In Showers

Due to the lack of master bathroom shower/tub combos, we see many more walk in showers. The showers we’re seeing are HUGE and tiled from top to bottom. Mesh back tile is featured on the floor, and a mosaic tile is usually used as an accent or to cover the walls.

Hexagon Tile

Hexagon tile was a trend at KBIS and Homearama last year, but I don’t wish it out of style any time soon. It’s a classic shape that adds geometric interest to your space. It looks great on the floor of your bathroom, in small format or large, and can be found often on shower floors or as shower accents. You can see it below and on the two shower floors above!

Herringbone Tile Patterns

Herringbone has also been popular in recent years and looks like it’s here to stay. Herringbone pattern tile can come in all shapes, sizes and materials. We saw a lot of glass mesh back wall tile, as well as some herringbone pattern marble floor tile, among other things. It’s a great look for any bathroom! You can see it above in the accent strip, and below.

Large Format Tile & Large Format Subway Tile

Large format tile, specifically large format subway tile has become popular recently, but we saw it EVERYWHERE at Homearama this year. It flooded the shower walls and surrounded the bath tubs. Large format tile is anything that is larger than 15″ on any side. You’ll see it in almost every shower featured above. Large format subway tile is typically 4×16 as opposed to the typical 3×6. It makes the space look bigger and goes up much quicker than smaller format subway tile and it’s such a classy look!

Wallpaper

One trend from Homearama that I’ve seen in other rooms in previous years has now made it’s way to the bathroom – Wallpaper! It’s definitly making a comeback. I for one love wallpaper, and it can really add a punch of personality to your space. Most of the time you’ll find it in the powder room, although you can use it in whichever bathroom you want!

Neutrals – Cabinets & Countertops & Flooring

The main thing I spotted at Homearama bathrooms this year is the clean neutrals on just about every surface. The painted vanities were usually in white, often in grey, and sometimes in black or beige. White countertops with grey or black veining was prevelant, and the tile in the showers and on the floor were neutrals as well. However, they still managed to pull of a lot of personality! Your colors don’t have to be bold in order to have style.

Small Bathroom: Choosing the Right Vanity & Tile

A small bathroom is one of the worst things on the planet. I remember the one in my first apartment, there was barely any space to move, you had to close the door to open the vanity cabinet but you also had to stand off to the side or sit on the toilet sideways so you didn’t hit your shins! There are many different factors that can keep someone from being able to do much about a small bathroom; whether it be that you’re stuck in an apartment and can’t make any structural changes or you own your own home, but you don’t have the budget to do a full bathroom remodel at the moment.
Small Bathroom: Monochromatic Color Scheme
Updating your tile and replacing your vanity are a couple of the easiest and most inexpensive ways that you can make your bathroom appear more open. We’ve got some tips and tricks on how you can utilize these to make your cramped bath appear “bigger on the inside.”
Shop-Now-Vanities

Be Basic

Simplicity is key when you’re wanting to make a small bathroom feel bigger! Skip the highly decorative and opt-in for more simplistic shapes and styles. In a space like this, less is more.
The subway tile look is super popular, and it’s a really basic look that’s also classy. However, what needs to be remembered with tile is size. Go for larger format tile – the less lines and grout, the better. This creates a longer line that isn’t broken up which makes the space appear larger because the pattern is continuous.
There are two ways to go with vanities her. You can choose a pedestal sink and be really minimal, but if you must have some storage space choose a floating single-sink vanity or one with open shelves instead of cabinets or drawers. A floating vanity will open up the floor space, which breaks up the space less, while an open vanity (shelves instead of drawers) moves your eye through the room and makes you think about what you really need in your bath.

Color is Key

This goes along with keeping it simple. When it comes to color in a small space you want to choose a single color or monochromatic theme. Brighter colors work best in small spaces, especially whites – plus white is classy!
Select bright, glossy white tile or backsplash that is bigger than the palm of your hand at least (remember go big or go home with the whole tile selection). If you have a light color scheme that isn’t white then keep your tile selection in that hue, it’ll still make the room feel bigger. However, it’s a little more complicated where you already have a dark bath. When you have a dark space that you can’t completely overhaul you can still choose a lighter wall tile or backsplash. Remember, you want to try to break up the colors and patterns as little as possible!
Small Bathroom: Contrasting Vanity
Lighter vanities are often less popular because bathrooms are already pretty bright so a vanity is the perfect piece to contrast lighter colors! This is where you can have some fun if you want to. Keep the vanity white (or whatever single color the rest of your bathroom is) especially if it’s one with drawers and cabinets, this breaks up the space less and makes a small bathroom feel larger. If you think you can spare to have some color feel free to contrast the room with a darker vanity, however, this will work best with an open style shelf vanity.
