How The Right Bathroom Layout Can Save You Money!

Today I’d like to discuss an aspect of planning that gets overlooked in a bathroom remodel: Bathroom Layout Options. When it comes to the design, you need to know your layout, first and foremost. The size, fixed plumbing, vanity size you’ll need, and so on. Allow me to dive in a few bathroom layout options! We’ll cover small, medium, and master bath options to make you aware of everything you should consider before breaking ground. Let’s get to it them.

Planning a Bathroom Layout

Before we start looking at some of the more popular bathroom layout options, let’s go over what we need to consider first, shall we? Again, the most important step in any remodeling process is planning. Get all of your ducks in a row, so to speak, meaning, hone your vision and then act on it. Have a good basis of what you want to achieve before setting up your design appointment, measurements, what you like, dislike, etc. That way, when it’s time, everything is decided and ready for action.

Beadboard old bathroom remodel

Size: Define what you’re working with first and accommodate. Are you remodeling the main bathroom in the living area, small/family bathroom upstairs, or the master bath, full of space and opportunity? Your layout, you’ll find, is contingent on the amount of space you have.

Privacy: In understanding that this isn’t the customary approach, it’s one I am quite fond of, having designed and installed some myself. If you have space, make some sort of barrier between the entrance and the toilet, for privacy’s sake. Apparently, there are studies show that hiding the toilet from sight “can make a big difference mentally.”

Note A privacy panel of tempered glass atop a half wall, for example.

Vanity: This also depends on space, but you need to know what size vanity you’d like. Are there going to be two people sharing this bathroom, would you like his or her sinks, or maybe you just need a single vanity? Save some space and possibly put a separate “getting ready” station next to it, another grooming station, if you will. All things to consider.

Shower/Bath: Walk-in showers are all the rage in the industry. They maximize space, emphasize luxury, and are incredibly appealing for resale. If you have space, the perfect layout, to me, would be a beautiful, walk-in, tiled shower accompanied by a freestanding tub, either set in the middle or niched in a space. For less spacious bathrooms, many homeowners are just going for the walk-in. As long as you have a tub somewhere in the house, you’re good for resale.

Plumbing: When you start moving plumbing around, your labor costs skyrocket. If you can manage it, try to layout your design with the existing plumbing. It could literally save you thousands.

Popular Bathroom Layout Options

So there’s this term called “wet walls,” which means any wall that has plumbing on it, pretty much. The wall your shower, tub, sinks are located on. You should know that fewer wet walls mean lower cost because plumbing is not cheap, folks. If you’re looking for a low-budget bathroom, go with one wet wall. The only drawback is that you’re limited on your design in that way. A layout with plumbing in two walls is a bit more work, but it allows for a few options. A three wet wall design offers the most flexibility, but of course, can get costly.
I’ve detailed three of the most prominent bathroom layouts in bathroom design right now below! Use this as inspiration to gain a better understanding of what you’d like to do with your remodel!

Three-Quarters Style: Featuring one wet wall, all of the bathroom’s plumbing adheres to one wall, like a circuit of sorts. This saves labor and supply expenses, but you’re limited on design. Even so, with a bath and a sink, this is a pretty popular design for smaller areas.

Full Bath: As I stressed before, this is the most ideal. Having a shower in your bathroom with the option of a bath just covers most people’s wants and wishes. There’s usually room in this design for a double vanity, or as I mentioned before, an extra “grooming” station of the sort.

Storage Space: Two sinks extend out for an appealing entry, across from a linen closet. This design is centered storage for toiletries and cosmetics. Perfect for Master Baths, and as you can see, the Master closet in the above picture extends into the bathroom, shielding the toilet and providing just a little more privacy. Also features a walk-in shower!

Why A Freestanding Tub Could Change Your Life!

Ah, the freestanding tub. I can’t tell you how many people in my life have said, “I want one of those so bad,” but fail to tell me why. Well, today I’m going to talk about why these baths are so appealing and continue to be such a hot commodity. If you have one, fill it up, grab the iPad, and read along as you slowly nod your head in agreement. If you don’t have one, I can guarantee that by the end of this post, you’ll at least consider it if you haven’t already.

A Freestanding Tub WILL Relax You

There’s a reason why in every movie or show that has a scene with one of these bad boys, the actor/actress is super relaxed. Case in point, taking a bath in one of these tubs is simply soothing. Unlike the Jacuzzi tubs fitted with jets and streams, a freestanding tub is set in silence, allowing you to soak in the solace that will inevitably de-stress you. Pour a glass of wine, light a candle or two, fill up one of these wonders with warm water, climb in, and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Freestanding tubs are found in legitimate, luxurious spa rooms for a reason. Even the look of them is relaxed. They are “free,” and therefore exhibit the notion that while you’re soaking in suds, you should feel the same way. Not fixed to the wall, nothing to fasten you in, just you, water, and the vessel that seems to float. Simply put, it is your own oasis, and you’ll end up spending hours in one after a particularly long day.

A Freestanding Tub Enlarges A Room

So, whether it’s set on legs or chills on the bathroom floor, a freestanding tub makes a room bigger because it’s seen as a singular item. Unlike a fixed bath that accompanies a couple of walls, this one sets by itself. Look at the pictures in this blog or do some of your own research, and you’ll see that each kind of room works around the freestanding tub instead of the other way around.

Freestanding Tub Louisville Cincinnati

If the tub is set on pegs, the entire area around and underneath shows, which provides that depth that everyone looks for in a bathroom – and – allows you to show off your bathroom floor. Sidenote: These tubs look best on top of bathroom tile. I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention that bit. It’s a luxurious item that’s attractiveness only intensifies by more elaborate designs.

A Freestanding Tub Fits Any Style

Honestly, it’s a win-win-win all the way around. Yes, there are different types of freestanding tubs that will no doubt work better than others, but for the most part, you cannot go wrong with a crisp-white, beautifully-shaped tub that acts as a focal point to your bathroom. So, for example, let’s say you’re breaking ground on a bathroom remodel, and where you used to have the typical fiberglass tub and shower head, you want a standup shower and freestanding tub.

Freestanding Tub Louisville Cincinnati

Well, if I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much about contouring your entire bathroom design around the tub because it’s going to do that no matter what. The magic is within the perception of the person. We’re all so used to seeing the normal, most-common bathroom setting — fixed tub/shower setup, toilet, maybe a theme or something, but then you add something iconic like a freestanding tub and the eye is naturally drawn to the peculiarity. It’s more human nature than it is physics, and who doesn’t want that kind of reaction in any room of their house?

Freestanding Tub Louisville Cincinnati

A Freestanding Tub is Easy-to-Install

I mean, this is pretty self-explanatory, right? It’s a bit heavy, sure, but for the most part, all that’s required on install is to choose your placement (which we’ll get to later) and hooking up your plumbing. Instead of bringing up a contractor for a built-in shower/bath combo, a freestanding tub only really requires a plumber to run the water lines and drain pipes to it. Simple as pie.
Freestanding Tub Louisville Cincinnati

Placement: A fixed shower is exactly that, fixed. There’s literally no room for variation, really. But with one of these tubs, the options are nearly endless. Notice the pictures don a creative element to the placement of the tub. It almost acts like a statue the way it presents itself. If there’s any word that truly grasps the essence of the freestanding tub, it’s stunning.

Alright, everyone. Are you in love with these tubs yet? I know I am. Well, we happen to have a few of these in stock at our Louisville and Cincinnati stores. Check out our selection of Freestanding & Clawfoot Tubs right here or stop in-store and see them for yourself!

Top Home Trends from KBIS and IBS Shows

I had the pleasure of attending KBIS in January, and these are the top home trends that I spotted at the show this year!

One of the best things about going to this incredible kitchen and bathroom showcase is the ability to get to see all of the styles, materials and design elements that will be taking over for the next year in new construction and remodeling. It's great to know what will be coming and what we should offer our clients that's in line with the top kitchen and bath trends.

14 Top Home Trends: Kitchen, Bath, and More!

Slab Cabinet Door Styles

Slab doors are a type of cabinet door style. This is a style in which the entire cabinet door is flat, without any indentions or raised areas. This is a very popular door style in Europe, but American trends are always a few years behind. Now, they're finally making their way into American Culture! I saw slab doors everywhere at KBIS! This is one of the most important of our top home trends because if people adopt this look, it will make popular kitchen style much different than it has been in years past.

Top home trends - slab cabinet doors

Black Framed Windows

For so many years, windows have had mostly white frames. It's been the norm. My home was built in the 70's, and the windows actually had black frames when they were installed. Although my windows are way past needing to be replaced, this decades old style has come back into style again and it one of our top home trends! It definitly speaks to the farmhouse look that's been all the rage this year.

Metallic Tile

Metallic tiles were a huge new product category at the KBIS and International Builders Show this year. It's a much different look that what I've seen in years past. Top home trends like this are fun and funky, but still elegant and stylish. You would primarily see these types of tiles in modern homes and they definitly make a statement!

Freestanding Soaker Tubs

Freestanding tubs are my absolute FAVORITE! They are not only totally stylish, and an art piece in their own right, but they are great for relaxation and healing. Soaker tubs allow you to submerge your whole body and let the hot water do it's thang. Who wants to be cramped in a tub or have to kink their neck just trying to soak an aching back? Not me!

Furniture Style Vanities

Furniture style vanities are all the rage right now. A furniture style vanity is one that has leg and looks more like furniture. Most regular vanities resemble cabinets, with a toe kick at the bottom. These have a much more high end feel and add an elegant touch to your bathroom!

The Farmhouse Look

The farmhouse look is one of my favorites! What makes a look farmhouse? A few things tend to be used over and over in this look. First, metals. Especially black metal. Woods are another popular element, and is often paired with metal. The blue color shown here and the clean shaker style of this interior door have a very farmhouse feel as well. Lastly? SHIPLAP WALL! Gotta love them.

Quartz, Quartz, Quartz

Quartz has been the top countertop material for a few years now, but I have to say that I don't think I saw one single granite company exhibiting at this entire show. I was SHOCKED! Maybe they're just hiding, but quartz was definitly making the show it's own and standing out as the reigning king of countertops! Why? It's gorgeous, no maintenance is required, and it's the strongest and most stain resistant material around!

Patterened Tile

Patterned tile is so beautiful. So many of them are actually hand painted (although you will pay much more for those). They come in porcelain or ceramic materials and really add a unique personal touch to your bathroom floor, backplash or even in your laundry room or on a fireplace!

Brushed Gold Fixtures

Some used to call it brass. But brass is SO 20 years ago. haha Now, we're calling it brushed gold. It's got a more brushed finish than typical bright shiny brass, but I've also seen glossy finish gold fixtures as well. This finish pairs great with blacks, greys, whites and navy. You can expect to see much more of it in the next few years, I'm sure!

Brushed Gold Fixtures - Top home trends

Taupe and Grey

Taupe and grey cabinet finishes are taking over! Grey has been hot for the last 2 years, but now taupe is being added in the mix. Stained wood cabinets, which have been out of the spotlight for a while now, is getting a comeback as long as the stain is a taupe or grey mixture, which is sometimes called "drift". I for one love the color!

Geometric Tile

I've seen so many cool geometric shapes at the show this year, and it always makes a statement. Whether it's square and triangle shapes as shown below, hexagons or trapezoids as shown a few images above, the look is the same: stunning. It definitly gives a modern feel for the most part, but I've seen some great octagon flooring that worked perfectly in a farmhouse style room.

Still Subway Tile

Subway  tile is just an old favorite that might never go out of style. I love the simplicity, but also the unique elements that have been added recently! You see a lot more colored tile, or those with texture. The one shown below is a handcrafted tile, and has a wavy finish as you can see. What do you think??

Beautiful Barn Doors

Barn doors are still popular and they most likely will be for some time! I love the fact that any style door, modern, rustic, farmhouse, craftsman, old world or traditional can all be used as a barn door. The sliding aspect is more fun and it also can be a stunning statement piece in your home!

In and Under Cabinet Lighting

Under and in cabinet lighting was a HUGE trend that I saw at KBIS and IBS this year. It's a great way to showcase beautiful cabinets and add an extra WOW factor to your kitchen or bath. It's also functional as it gives off light at night when you may not want all the lights on.

Bathroom Sink Styles: 7 Types To Consider

So…you’re finally ready to tackle that bathroom remodel. Picking out a bathroom sink was definitely not at the top of the “remodel list” when we started our bathroom overhaul last year.

We had no idea there were so many different styles to choose from or the questions we needed to ask prior to swinging that ole sledgehammer!First, which bathroom were we remodeling? (master en suite, family bathroom, powder room).

Second, Who will be using this bathroom and how much space do we have?Answering these two simple questions can help narrow down your decisions.

There are plenty of options to choose from but…it doesn’t have to give you a headache! Here are some bathroom sink styles to help make your decision a little easier, depending on which bathroom you are remodeling.

Bathroom Sink Options For Small Spaces

Pedestal Bathroom Sink

The pedestal bathroom sink is a classic sink style. Its self-supporting mechanism allows it to be installed in small bathrooms. Space-saving yet chic, the pedestal or legs come in a variety of designs.

Pros: This sink is aesthetically pleasing in a small bathroom, offered in a wide variety of styles & designs. It also conceals your drainage pipe.

Cons: you won’t have any storage space under the sink or any counter space. around for toiletries.

bathroom sink pedestal

Wall mounted bathroom sinks

Widely popular sink style. Its space-saving function is part of its appeal. Simply mount it on a wall. There’s no need for additional fixtures or a countertop. It also saves floor space.

Pros: A wall-mounted sink doesn’t have any cabinets below it, which saves space and also leaves more visible floor area, making the room feel bigger.

Cons: Just like the pedestal sink, you won’t have any storage space under the sink or countertop space.

wall mount bathroom sink

Bathroom Sink Options for Larger Spaces: ( good for family or master baths)

Top Mount Bathroom Sink

Probably the most commonly used, a top-mount or drop-in sink is designed to sit on top of, and visible above, the counter.

Pros: These sinks can be found in stock at most home stores ranging from basic to high-end design, available in a variety of colors. This is a great option if you are simply changing the sink on your existing countertop. Easy to install.

Cons: One disadvantage of this sink type is that the rim makes it a little more difficult to keep the countertop clean. There’s also the potential for water damage.

top mount bathroom sink

Undermount Sink

The undermount sink is mounted below the countertop creating a smooth, seamless look and maximizing countertop space. With this sink style, it is easy to wipe down contents of your countertop into the basin. This sink is only compatible with solid material countertops. (solid surface or concrete)

Pros: This sink can give your bathroom a clean and contemporary look paired with solid surface countertops.

Cons: Often more expensive than a top-mounted sink and are not compatible with all countertop material, such as laminate or wood. ( raw edges of the particleboard or plywood countertop substrate would be left exposed).

Undermount Bathroom Sink

All-in-one sink and countertop

Many off-the-shelf vanity cabinets that can be purchased from bathroom supply stores offer an all-in-one countertop with a sink that sits on top. With this style, the sink itself is actually molded as part of the countertop. It can be made from various materials, such as porcelain or acrylic.

Pros: Easy to clean and a great option for busy households. There are no ridges or seams, so they can look very streamlined. Usually available in a wide variety of standard sizes.

Cons: designed so the countertop gradually slopes down and inward to create a sink in the middle. This can lead to having less flat counter space than say a top-mount or drop-in sink.

all in one bathroom sink

Vessel Sink

If you are looking to make a bold style statement, then the vessel sink is the best choice. Available in porcelain, glass, stone and even copper — this sink sits on top of the countertop. These sinks are stylish and are sure to add some quirk to your bathroom. Some are sold with its own faucet. Maintenance will depend on the sink’s material.

Pros: This sink demands attention and is a great way to make a bold statement in your bathroom.

Cons: Sits higher than other sinks so careful planning of countertop & vanity height must be considered, otherwise it will be uncomfortable to use.

Vessel Bathroom Sink

Semi-recessed sink

If your bathroom has limited space, but you would still like some vanity cabinets below your sink for storage, then a semi-recessed option might be a good option.

Pros: Due to the design of this sink, this allows for much shallower cabinets- maybe as much as 12 inches. This could free up some valuable floor space in your bathroom.

Cons: With no countertop around the front of the sink to catch water, splashes or spills could occur. Storage space is also more limited. Now armed with a little more information on your different options available, you can find the bathroom sink that best fits your design & style. If you are still in the beginning stages of planning your bathroom model, this < ;a href="https://builderssurplus.us/bathroom-remodeling-your-complete-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complete bathroom remodeling guide will help make your remodel…and life easier

Create a Timeless Style You Won’t Get Tired Of

Everyone should aim to achieve a timeless style. We all know how expensive and time consuming remodeling and decorating can be, so you should try and do them only once every blue moon. Here are 5 ways to achieve timeless style in your home! Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

Timeless Style Means Staying Away From “Trends”

Trendy is the opposite of timeless. Trends come and go, while timeless style lasts decades. That’s not to say that elements can’t be “In Style” but also be classic, like white cabinets or subway tile. These things have always been popular, but come to the forefront in design some years more than others. Themes, bright colors, certain patterns or shapes can be trendy items. In the end, it’s YOUR home, so if you love it and it’s on trend, don’t let that stop you. What you want to stay away from is remodeling to the design trends of the moment, just because it’s popular. As your 90’s wardrobe will tell you, we all go through phases. Make sure your kitchen or bathroom aren’t one of them. Timeless Style Wood Kitchen

Incorporate History

Incorporating history can be a great way to achieve timeless style. The styles of the past influence design in the present, so adding elements of greek architecture like arches and columns will always be timeless. Adding vintage pieces and antiques is another way to carry your look through decades. Antiques get better with age, so you won’t have to worry about growing out of them! Crown moulding and nice trim will work well to create a timeless look.

Research your style

Ultimately, the most important part of creating a timeless style is to make sure that it’s YOUR style. You’re the one living in this home, so make sure that you follow your gut on things that you believe you’ll like for years to come. Go with colors and decor that make you feel like yourself, that put your at ease and lift your mood. Good interior design should always do that. Neutral Is Key

Unless you have a life long love of the color aqua (like I do!) It’s a good idea to keep your main colors neutral. Your kitchen cabinets for instance, are something that is difficult and expensive to replace. If you go with neutral colors like white, grey or even black for your cabinets (which are also in style) you can replace other options if you ever feel bored and can rest assured that most of your choices will still coordinate with your cabinets. Countertops are similar, although easier to replace than cabinets. Choosing a bold orange quartz countertop might be modern and cool today, but you don’t know how you’ll feel down the road. Or, you could love it forever. Again, knowing yourself and your style is key.

Let Fabrics & Accent Pieces Go Bold

When your main items or walls are neutral, you can let your fabrics or accent pieces be what brings in color, pattern, texture and personality! You can choose a fun accent tile, paint a wall or add a fun wallpaper, or choose amazing bar stools! These are the things that really bring your design together. If you decide this look is getting old, you simply change them up, and you don’t have to touch those core pieces. You wouldn’t believe what a difference some paint, cabinet hardware or backsplash can do to totally change up the look of a kitchen or bathroom! I hope this has been helpful in your journey to create a timeless style within your home. If you have any more questions, let us know in the comments below!

Homearama 2017: Top Bathroom Trends

One of my favorite events of the year is Homearama, which comes every July. Homearama is an event featuring many new construction homes, which showcases the latest and greatest trends in building and interior design. This is a great way to see what the hot items will be for the year, and see some of the incredibly beautiful spaces that the builders and designers put together.
Today, I’ll be showing you what we found to be the top bathroom trends at Homearama 2017 at Poplar Woods. If you’re in the market for a new construction home or remodeling your bathroom, you might be able to use some of these great ideas!

Homearama Bathroom Trends:

Freestanding Tubs

One of my absolute favorite trends in bathroom design from Homearama is the emergence of freestanding tubs. You typically won’t see standard tubs in master bathrooms anymore. They’re really only found in kids bathrooms these days. I for one don’t mind a bit. They’re larger than most regular tubs. They’re called soaker tubs for a reason, you can really stretch out and they are much more comfy on your back.  They also look like an art piece in your bathroom!

Walk In Showers

Due to the lack of master bathroom shower/tub combos, we see many more walk in showers. The showers we’re seeing are HUGE and tiled from top to bottom. Mesh back tile is featured on the floor, and a mosaic tile is usually used as an accent or to cover the walls.

Hexagon Tile

Hexagon tile was a trend at KBIS and Homearama last year, but I don’t wish it out of style any time soon. It’s a classic shape that adds geometric interest to your space. It looks great on the floor of your bathroom, in small format or large, and can be found often on shower floors or as shower accents. You can see it below and on the two shower floors above!

Herringbone Tile Patterns

Herringbone has also been popular in recent years and looks like it’s here to stay. Herringbone pattern tile can come in all shapes, sizes and materials. We saw a lot of glass mesh back wall tile, as well as some herringbone pattern marble floor tile, among other things. It’s a great look for any bathroom! You can see it above in the accent strip, and below.

Large format tile, specifically large format subway tile has become popular recently, but we saw it EVERYWHERE at Homearama this year. It flooded the shower walls and surrounded the bath tubs. Large format tile is anything that is larger than 15″ on any side. You’ll see it in almost every shower featured above. Large format subway tile is typically 4×16 as opposed to the typical 3×6. It makes the space look bigger and goes up much quicker than smaller format subway tile and it’s such a classy look!

Wallpaper

One trend from Homearama that I’ve seen in other rooms in previous years has now made it’s way to the bathroom – Wallpaper! It’s definitly making a comeback. I for one love wallpaper, and it can really add a punch of personality to your space. Most of the time you’ll find it in the powder room, although you can use it in whichever bathroom you want!

Neutrals – Cabinets & Countertops & Flooring

The main thing I spotted at Homearama bathrooms this year is the clean neutrals on just about every surface. The painted vanities were usually in white, often in grey, and sometimes in black or beige. White countertops with grey or black veining was prevelant, and the tile in the showers and on the floor were neutrals as well. However, they still managed to pull of a lot of personality! Your colors don’t have to be bold in order to have style.

Jeffrey Alexander Cabinet Hardware: Feel The Luxury

Hello, everyone! Cabinets are, no doubt, one of the most defining features in a kitchen or bathroom remodel, right? Today, I’d like to talk about something that greatly accentuates the look of your cabinets — the hardware — and specifically, Jeffrey Alexander hardware.

The Most Luxurious Cabinet Hardware

Alright, so maybe I’m a bit biased, sure, but cabinet hardware by Jeffrey Alexander has some of the most beautiful styles and collections that I’ve ever seen. And I mean that quite literally. Ever since I was eight, I’ve been working with my father in his home remodeling business, and I’ve come across some pretty neat stuff as far as accessories are concerned, but these collections are downright jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring..you name it. They’re simply wonderful.

cabinet hardware

They’re also incredibly unique in their design, too. You won’t find many, if any, cookie cutter elements to these pieces. If you’re wanting to make your kitchen or bathroom standout, enriched in design and elemental enticing aesthetics, then stop what you’re doing. And head here.

Quite Affordable Cabinet Hardware

You all know the old adage: You get what you pay for. If there’s anything I’ve learned to be 100% absolutely true within the past century of my existence, it is that. If you want to go out and buy an $.89 cabinet knob, then so be it. But you can’t complain when it falls off or scratches or the day after you put it up someone says, “yeah, um, those look God-awful.”

cabinet hardware

cabinet hardware

Fact is, if you’re trying to achieve a sophisticated, luxurious look, you’re going to pay sophisticated, luxurious money. Porsche 911’s aren’t $20,000 for a reason. They sport the sleekest designs and have the performance packages down to a literal science. But it comes at a cost. I say all of that to say this, Jeffrey Alexander kinda defies that line of thinking. No, they’re not under a dollar, but they’re pretty affordable, and booyyyyy, do you get what you pay for.

Cabinet Hardware For Days

Definitely one of my favorite things about JA. They have so much, maybe even too much, to choose from. I’m more inclined to go with the former on that one simply because I know that options are always a nice thing to have in the remodeling industry. But seriously, they have near countless collections. Plus, they’re manufactured by certain styles — rustic, contemporary, traditional, and ultra-modern.

So, no matter what the certain style you currently have in your bathroom or what you’re wanting to create, they have one just for you. It’s perfect.

They’re Growing

To top it all off, this line of cabinet hardware isn’t going anywhere. Hardware Resources, the company that manufactures these beauties, is THE fastest growing manufacturer of cabinet hardware in the United States. Sidenote: That’s another plus. They’re made right here in the good ole U.S. of A., which is always an important characteristic in my opinion.

cabinet hardware

But anyway, yeah, so the main line just continues to grow and grow, darn near exponentially, which means not only will the current styles be in store for a very long time, but there’s room for more unique, trendy designs to come forth. It’s just nice to know that you can fall and love, knowing they’re jot going anywhere.

So, there it is, folks. Four reasons why Jeffrey Alexander Cabinet Hardware is the best in the business. Also, if you are in the process of doing a kitchen remodel, let us know and we’ll set you up with a free kitchen design consultation with one of our experts! Hope to see y’all in the store sometime soon, but until then, be safe and stay blessed!

DIY: Tiled Shower Surround

A tiled shower simply spells out elegance. It tends to breach the line between what can be considered as an ordinary bathroom to an elaborate one and for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that it, of course, it just looks better than a vinyl shower, but it’s the very low-maintenance, easy-to-clean properties that sets a tiled shower apart from the rest. Today, I’m going to do a little “DIY” post about how to properly install a tiled shower surround!

Materials You’ll Need for a Tiled Shower Surround

Tiled Shower: Tape it up

Now, it may not seem like it, but you’re going to want to tape some sort of plastic wrap around the shower. This is simply so you can protect your investment and it’s so much easier on pick up.

Tiled Shower: Setting Up A Base Line

Alright, people this is pretty important. Listen up. It may seem like the best thing to do is start at the ceiling or from the tub, but it’s not. You just don’t know for sure if it’s level or not, and even if you take a level to it, it’s best to just stick on the safe side. So, what you’ll do is center your base line. Measure from wall to wall, and find your center. Draw a horizontal line across. There’s your starting point.
Make sure you account for your grout lines (thickness of the spacers you’re using). From there, I suggest fastening a piece of wood at that line, so your first line of tile is 100% level. Get this right, and you’re smooth sailing. Don’t, and you’re pretty much going to through hell trying to back track.

tiled shower Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

In the event that you cant follow the line of the countertops, you’ll want to measure the height of half of your tile. Now, use your level to make a line all the way across. This will give you an even line to follow. You can either build a small wooden ledge on that line to ensure that your tiles don’t slip, or you can make a point to check that they’re not sliding as you work, and adjust them if they are.
When your wall is tiled to the top of your space, you’ll then go back and make cuts for this last half row on the bottom, next to your countertop. If you have a slight angle, that is something you can cut into the tile if needed. This way, the bottom of the tile may be angled ever so slightly on the edge of the countertop, but the row itself will be straight.

Tiled Shower: Time to Tile

Now, you’re going to want to center your tile on previously fixed piece of wood. This is so you can get your staggering down, from wall to wall. Then, on the second row, you’ll just work out from the center of the tile below it.

tiled shower Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

Row-by-Row

Go row-by-row on each wall, so you know where you end up on each end. This will also ensure that everything is straight, which by the way, it’s probably a safe bet to get out the a straight level and check your progress periodically. Just for peace of mind.

tiled shower Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

Trim-Kit Cutout
This can be kind of difficult to achieve if this is is your first time tiling a shower, but once get used to your tile saw, it’s easy enough. This is another reason why it’s good to go row-by-row, so you’ll know exactly where each tile will be. If you’re lucky like we were, the cutout will end near the middle of a tile.

tiled shower

options

Use Edges
If you’re not using bullnose, you’re going to want to put a couple strips on edging (steel bead, pictured below) along the side of your tile at the very end.

Be cautious of the size that you buy, too. You want the round edge to be flush with the side of your tile, ideally.

tiled shower Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

Add Mosaic
Adding a decorative, mosaic tile will tremendously enhance the look of your tiled shower. With the process, you can usually start at one end of the other, as you’ll be making cuts regardless, and because of the way the mesh-back is made, this is pretty simple to do.

tiled shower Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

A Warning
Don’t press too hard on the mosaic. You can thank me later, but it is extremely difficult to get the excess mortar from between the mosaic lines. Like, really difficult. Save yourself an hour or two and press lightly.

Tiled Shower: Clean the Grout Lines

Alright, this is also pretty important. If you did as I suggested and gave the tile a day to set, then the mastic is dry. If you look closely, you can see it in the grout lines. It’s time to set yourself up for the perfect grout job.
tiled shower
Get a razor blade and slice through the lines. Once you’ve done this, vacuum up the excess, and you’re ready to grout!

Tiled Shower: Grout

The lines are clean, and now it’s time to apply the grout of your choosing. Mix it up real nice and float it even better. Now, at this stage, you can throw cleanliness out the window. The stuff is going to get everywhere, and you shouldn’t be conservative with how much you use.

tiled shower

Clean After Your Grout
Once you’ve finished grouting each line, dampen a sponge and clean the surface. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, so you don’t grab grout!

tiled shower Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

Tiled Shower: The Waiting Game Part II

Let the grout dry overnight. Come back in and wipe it all down. Then after, grab a towel and buff the entire shower walls. This will get rid of that haze that was leftover from the initial cleanup.
tiled shower
Then…you’re ready to seal it in. Scour the entire shower before you do. Once you apply that sealer, it’s a wrap. The dirt and grime that was there will stay there, so be careful. Then step back, and admire your work!
You’re all Finished

Ledger Stone has made a major impact in the tile industry, in my opinion. If you’ve noticed, “look-alike” products continue to gain popularity, and Ledger Stone gained its varsity letters before any of them. The one featured below is a fan-favorite, for sure. It’s gorgeous in any setting, but especially bathrooms and, oddly enough, fireplaces, too. Simply stunning. While it does LOOK amazing in the shower, do let your customers know that it is difficult to clean. It needs to be completely waterproof behind the tile or you will get mold.

So, you can get this stylish, trendy bathroom tile for only $5.99/piece, right here at Builders Surplus. Now, this is one of the priciest product to make this list, but for good reason. If you’re a fan of texture in aesthetics, then this product is for you.

Plus, I’m a huge fan of curvature during any kind of design, so this pattern hits me right in the feels.

Right now, you can get this contrast-maker for only $4.99/sq. ft. One more thing about this, though, is its versatility. Where I’m more inclined to install this bathroom tile as a backsplash, it’s fine for a shower floor, too!

I enjoy the movement in this tile. And it’s a subtle gray, too, ya know? Not too deep, not too light. Just right. Home Value: 5 Easy Ways to Increase It

What’s going on, everyone? I do hope you’re well and enjoying the much-anticipated warm weather. Where it seemed like it was a rather mild winter, it felt like ages to me.  If you’re a summer baby like yours truly, then you literally countdown the days until April or May, where you can enjoy a nice drive with the windows down and music up. Plus, now that it’s warm, we can all start working on the most important asset we have — our home. In this blog post, I’ll discuss five ways to easily increase home value. May the warmth inspire and spark creativity, y’all. Let’s begin!

The Best Ways To Increase Home Value

Focus on the Entry Door

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that curb appeal is a monstrous factor when it comes to home value. The front door simply further emphasizes this incredibly significant factor. Essentially, it pulls the eye in and acts as a main focal point to the entire house. Think about it, when you have guests over, what is the first course of action? Walking through the front door. So, naturally, that’s what the eye is going to be attracted to.     home value   Don’t be afraid to get a little quirky when it comes to your front door, either. Want to make it a crazy-cool color? Do it. Want to splash some sort of design on it? Go ahead. I encourage you to make it your own and let it standout. Because, honestly, it’s going to anyway.   home value

Upgrade the Kitchen

Now, listen, I know those three words can seem a bit vague, and even once it’s broken down, it can still be a bit overwhelming. So for all intensive purposes, I’ll just name two components of a kitchen. Also note that your kitchen is arguably (but who would argue) the most important room in the entire house. Because of this, simply renovating a few things will no doubt increase home value. For sure. Cabinets: You may be surprised to know that simply switching out the cabinets in your kitchen will do wonders as far as aesthetics. Maybe you’re tired of the type of cabinet and color, or you’re like me and get antsy when you’ve staring at the same scenery for far too long. I encourage you to take a good, hard look at your cabinets and see if you’d like to make some changes. Remix it up. home value   Countertops: In my opinion, countertops can make or break a kitchen’s overall look. With this in mind, if you’ve been preparing your meals over, say, formica countertops then I think you’d really enjoy a granite or quartz countertops. They’re both sleek, modern-looking, and the characteristics for both are far more superior — in strength, durability, accident-resistance, and maintenance.   home value

Beautify your Bathroom

Kitchens and baths, y’all, that’s where it’s at for value’s sake. These rooms allow a person to express themselves artistically and make a style their own. Like I mentioned before, don’t be afraid to go above and beyond. After all, IT IS your home. Do what you will. However, if you’re going to be selling in the near future, keep the style one that will appeal to a broad range of buyers. Vanities: A bathroom doesn’t call for as much space as a kitchen does, sure, but I’d be lying if I said that these pieces aren’t essential to your bathroom design. Take the same advice I gave you about your kitchen cabinetry and recreate a different design — use interesting colors, textures, and styles and make things harmoniously blend. home value Vanity tops: Much like your kitchen countertops, a vanity top can make or break the design. Now, if it were me, I’d take a look at our cultured marble tops, in addition to our large selection of vanity tops. We truly have some beautiful colors that will blend nicely with any design. I promise you.

Watch your Windows

Windows may seem like a small aspect in home design, but I’m telling you, replacing the old with the new will greatly increase your home value. At Builders Surplus, we carry Silverline by Andersen windows, and they’re true beauties. Available in different designs and styles, these babies will quite literally make each room brighter.   home value   Another thing I kinda like about windows is that they’re two sides of the same coin. We talked about the importance of curb appeal before, and windows sort of add to that enhanced focus, but they’re also very endearing on the inside, as well.   Plus, if you’re kinda crafty, you can enrich the look and put a beautiful set of moulding around each window, achieving that ‘craftsmen’ style perfectly. Just a little food for thought if you want to really increase home value.     home value

Spruce Up the Outside

This probably goes without saying, but a well-maintained, neat, and even colorful yard is going to get some looks. If you want to increase home value, this is definitely an area I’d focus on. Curb appeal, remember? If your grass is as green as a golf course, there’s a nice blend of trees, flowers, and bushes — all neatly clipped — and everything looks proper and perfect, don’t be surprised to see a car come to a slow crawl, peeking in.   home value     Having a yard that’s pleasing to the eye is going to get you those seriously-this-just-went-on-the-market kind of offers, and who doesn’t want to be in that driver’s seat, no pun intended. Just don’t make it TOO busy, you know what I mean. Keep it nice. Keep it neat. Keep it complete.   home value     I hope these five things gave you a bit of insight and, hopefully, some inspiration to make some renovations to increase home value. Change isn’t all bad, people! Remember that, and keep on enjoying this weather! Hope to see y’all in here soon, but until then be safe and stay blessed!

5 Bathroom Styles You Must See Before You Remodel

Okay, before you start the demo phase, which is incidentally my favorite phase, you absolutely positively have to look at these five bathroom styles. Now, I understand that if you have a sledgehammer on deck then you’ve probably (hopefully) already have your design plans in order and you’re quite ready break ground on this bad boy, BUT that doesn’t mean that you can’t allow of a few minor adjustments. Today, I’d like to discuss a few bathroom options, putting everything into perspective in terms of style, including vanities, tops, plumbing, sinks, and tiles.

Traditional Bathroom Styles

The tried-and-true style, as I like to call it. Some call it ordinary, some call it plain, I simply see it for what it is – classic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to the roots without the fancy-shmancy accommodations that some other styles may provide. I’m not knocking other styles, I’m just saying that going the “traditional” route is almost like going to your hometown after a years and years from settling elsewhere. It’s comfortable. It’s safe, and it still provides that warm glow deep in your soul that filters throughout. Simply put, it’s home. And it’s as they say: There’s nothing wrong with going home.

bathroom styles

Modern Bathroom Styles

We’re talking glass showers, sleek sink fixtures, lone freestanding tub, large windows, and as much space as you can manage with this style. The greatest thing about the modern-style is how sleek everything looks. The picture below is actually identified as “modern-minimalist,” and when you get a good look at it, you’ll understand why, but as it is, every element of the bathroom is tasteful, sleek, elegant. It’s easy on color to give away its rich texture. In all of these bathroom styles, this has to be my favorite. Especially since it’s low-key minimalist themed as well. Very sophisticated.

bathroom styles

Hamptons Bathroom Styles

Something I’ve actually very recently been doing a bit of research on, is the Hampton-style. As you can see in the picture below, this style boasts very neutral colors, the majority being white and prides itself on chicness. Subway tile is usually infused in the mix or marble, one of the two. As far as the vanity goes, the shaker style is what’s best for the Hampton look. Usually, again, white to emphasis it’s standout, bright aura. Another added note with this style is the sconce lighting that usually hangs on either side of the mirror, or in the middle. The tapware is usually chrome or nickel-plated. Definitely more of a traditional feel when it comes to the fixtures. Anyhow…I think it’s pretty cool. What do you think?

bathroom styles

Contemporary Bathroom Styles

Similar to the modern style, contemporary brings you an extremely sleek design. Notice how the colors are all very neutral save for one, small accent wall in the background. The fixtures aren’t your common, typical ones, either. They’re fixed to the wall, which completely eradicates any “traditional” style make-up in this design. The look it portrays clearly defines as it a style that lives in the now, in the present, but still establishes room for variation. For example, you could accompany these tones with that of a Hampton-style and still get the same effect, if that makes sense. It’s not my favorite, I admit, but I do appreciate the bold nature of this type of style. For sure.

bathroom styles

Rustic Bathroom Styles

Ah, the rustic look. Who doesn’t like this kind of style is my question. This style of bathroom gives you many options to explore your creativity and allows you to antique some aspects of your bathroom and really push forth that rustic, classically-aged look that I like. In the picture below, I really really like the door style. It’s a craftsman style door setting, but it fits in with the rest of the bathroom. To make a project out of it, you could find an unfinished alder cabinet and reclaim the wood to give it that aged look. This style can usually be found in your country-themed houses, as it really works well with that design. What do you think?

Family Friendly Remodeling Materials

It doesn’t matter if you have a bigger family or a smaller one, accidents are just going to happen. Someone is going to knock over the grape juice all over the kitchen countertops, muddy footprints will trail the floors all the way up to the culprit’s bedroom, someone’s going to neglect the “clean bathroom” chore for weeks at a time, leaving soap scum and grime to everyone’s displeasure, spices will be misplaced or unfortunately found in the fridge, and crumbs will layer the living room floor no matter how many times you vacuum. Families and messes go together like the mop and the broom in the closet down the hallway. It’s inevitable. BUT…there are some remodeling materials that you can use in your renovation that will alleviate some of the stress that these messes bring, some even eradicating them altogether. In this post, we’ll detail some of these remodeling materials, which you’ll undoubtedly think about the next time you’re wiping up spaghetti sauce that’s dribbled down the cabinet door.

Remodeling Materials – Quartz Countertops

So, there’s a term that I need to say here, and at first glance I, too, was like, “Uhhhh…is that a word?” Wipe-ability. I hyphenated it for your sake, but apparently, this is a thing. It means exactly what you think it does, and it goes in context with the first remodeling material I have for you today. Quartz countertops are undoubtedly the easiest surface to maintain. It’s a non-porous material, so there’s no chance of anything staining. It’s also extremely durable; it won’t chip, crack, scratch, or scuff.     remodeling materials   remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – CoreTEC Flooring

New-age technology combined with a stunning, jaw-dropping look, CoreTEC is a flooring like no other. It’s best characteristic and the main reason it makes this list? 100% waterproof. Not water-resilient. Water. Proof. You could dump an entire gallon of whatever on these floors, leave for the weekend, and you’d come back to it staring right back at you like, “What? Was that supposed to phase me or something?” It doesn’t warp. It doesn’t buckle. It doesn’t act like your typical hardwood flooring at all. Too legit. And we have these lovely remodeling materials right here, in store, ready to be installed. Click here to check out our inventory.     remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Tiled Shower Walls

In general, tile is your safest bet when it comes to having a low-maintenance floor. But tiled shower walls exemplifies this characteristic. Heavily. As opposed to fiberglass shower walls, soap scum, dirt, and grime are easier to clean and maintain with a tiled shower wall. It can be as simple as purchasing an After Shower cleaner and wiping the walls down each time. Easy as pie. SIDENOTE: If you do tile your shower walls, refrain from using white grout. Those are TERRIBLY difficult to clean and you’ll curse the day you ever decided that. And chiseling out grout is no fun. Trust me. I know. 2017 Tile Trends You'll Go Crazy For

We’re three months into 2017, everyone, and I hope it’s going as well as you’d hope thus far. Winter is nearly behind us, and pretty soon, we’ll be setting our eyes upon the beginnings of one of my favorite seasons – Spring. And with a new year, new trends begin to pop up, and that doesn’t exclude designs and styles in the home renovation industry, right? Today, I’d like to specifically discuss tile trends for 2017.
Now, at Builders Surplus, we have a plethora of designs for your tile flooring needs, including, but not limited to polished porcelain, large format tile, and our lovely Daltile line. Not to mention, my personal favorite, wood-look tile. Elegant sleek feel of tile with the genuine appearance of wood. Exceptional. Alright, let’s look at what’s hot right now! Oh, look, this first one looks familiar…

Wood-Look Tile

A hot topic, indeed. But, honestly, no surprise here. Wood-look tile has been gripping homeowners across the nation for quite a few months now, and for good reason. It’s incredibly durable, maintaining the ability to withstand cracks, warps, dents, scratches, and chips. Perfect for those clumsy relatives you may have or turnt-up toddlers want to see what happens “when this glass meets that floor.”
Whatever the accident may be, wood-look will have you covered. What’s more is that you can install this tile anywhere. Yep, anywhere, including bathrooms. The material used in wood-look actually repels liquids. No more stains. No more mold. No more warping. That alone makes this style one of the finer tile trends of 2017, you know what I mean?

Hexagon-Patterned Tile

There’s just something about this design that has sparked a near insane interest in flooring departments everywhere. And, I get, ya know? When it comes to any designs, you must stick to what appeals to the eye. Sometimes regular patterns go amiss because of their standard square patterns, no matter how colorful or intriguing the tile is itself. But, you throw a bit of geometrical curvature down on the floor and you end up with something truly mesmerizing, extremely hard to miss, and downright jaw-dropping. Definitely makes the list for most exciting tile trends of the year.

Dark Tile

You know as well as I do that color is a primary element in any design. That statement continues to reign true through 2017, and now we’ve begun to see a piqued interest in darker tiles. If used correctly given the other elements in the room, a darker tile can exude relaxation and solace in a luxurious fashion. One of the more popular tile colors that we’ll see through the year is gray. It may seem like an ordinary, mundane color, but when used with other rich colors, you can get that relaxing, tranquil feel you’ve been looking for. Sidenote: Darker tiles are also obviously easier to clean. Just a plus on top of a plus.

Brick-Look Tile

Listen, I love the cobblestone look. Love it. It’s probably because of weird fascination with all things 18th century London, but there’s just something about walking across cobblestones that visually takes me across the Pond, holding a coffee, wearing a peacoat, and looking down the lines of cafes, wondering where I’m going to for a sip of tea and a crumb of a crumpet. But then again, maybe I’m not so weird because brick-look tile is one of the hottest tile trends to date and it exhibits the same feel.
People love this look because it’s different. It is far from your usual flooring. It’s a bit quirky, which for some is all the more reason, but it’s also a design that continues to amaze people. With that said, this design is not going anywhere fast. Expect it to be a hot commodity for some years to come.

Cement-Look Tile

Honestly, the all-encompassing hottest trend is flooring that looks like something it’s not. Wood-look, Brick-Look, and now, Cement-Look tile. It’s extremely endearing, folks. I’ve talked about it a few times in previous blog posts, but it’s just interesting to me that a material that is widely known for industrial purposes had made its way into people’s living room and hallways – in a glorious fashion.

Herringbone & Chevron Patterns

Another one that shouldn’t be much of a surprise. These patterns continue to “wow” people because of the inevitable. It WILL get your attention and nine times out of ten, you WILL like it. Now, yes it’s going to continue well into 2017, but I don’t expect this trend to last forever, honestly. It’s a pattern and once people start looking at the same thing for a long, extended period of time, well, they get bored. And then it’s onto the next attractive, more appealing design or pattern.

Well, everyone, keep your eye out for these colors, designs, and patterns for the months to come! I’m sure you’ll find that there’s a reason these characteristics continue to amaze everyone in the industry. What’s your favorite one of these 2017 tile trends? Feel free to leave a comment or let me know by sending me an email! And if you’re in the industry or you’re looking to install some new floors, come on into one of your two locations in Louisville or Cincinnati! Until then, be safe and stay blessed!

PRO: Additional Options to Impress Your Clients

How’s it going, professionals? I hope business is well, and that you’re so slammed with jobs, you honestly don’t know what to do with yourself at the moment. It’s better to have an abundance of jobs than to be stressing where your next one will be, am I right? Today, I’d like to discuss a few options, quite literally, on how you can maintain repeating customers in your queue. You’ll do this by simply impressing your clients in a way that shows off your finesse as a master of your trade.
In essence, you’ll suggest options that may have been overlooked in the initial design and will hopefully having your customers so satisfied with your expertise that they’ll go to no one else but you during their next renovation. To do so, I’ll break it down by a number of categories – kitchen, bath, flooring, tile, and doors – and provide a suggestion that one, enhances the look of the design, and two, will make your customer very happy that they called you. Cause that’s what it’s all about, right?

Kitchen Options – Crown Moulding

It’s no secret that cabinets are a significant factor in any kitchen design. They’re essential for the appearance of the kitchen style, but also for functionality as well. Typically, larger families require more kitchen space, from both the countertops and cabinets. The trick is to blend both together, using aesthetics as well as how functional the cabinets are to produce a design that gives you the best of both worlds. Those two words in bold, two lines above are yet another way to enhance the look of the kitchen without your customer’s digging too deep into their wallets.
The Crown Moulding option is one that can COMPLETELY change the look of a kitchen. Yes, it’s that drastic. It makes the difference of your standard cabinet look to something more elegant, elaborate, and sophisticated. At a pretty low cost. There’s a wide variety of options, too. Everything from extremely intricate designs to simple, smooth beveled edges. Just throw it out as a suggestion, and let your customers determine if they like the look or not. But – and I’m willing to bet – they’ll appreciate the tip.

Bath Options – Backsplash

Ah, talk about an enhancement. A tiled backsplash in a kitchen is almost mandatory once you’ve installed a couple during bathroom renovations. It’s simply a lovely feature, and I have a theory on why that is. Bear with me here, but a design is only as good as the components that it’s made of. Let’s take the color aspect of it all. If the colors do not work, the design does not work. But if the colors mesh well with another then it becomes appealing to the eye. So, when it comes to a backsplash, it’s just another asset, or component, that helps blend in the colors in the design.
Plus, look at the materials you’re dealing with, vanity alone. You have the color of the vanity, the color of the countertop, the wall paint color, accessories, and so on…and then when you add a backsplash, it just pulls everything together to make something quite extraordinary. Once again, low on cost, relatively easy on install, and tremendous on appearance. I love this option. Your clients will, as well. Take a peek at our backsplash tile options on our website. We have a wide variety of styles and finishes that will accommodate a number if designs!

Flooring Options – Quarter Round

In the remodeling industry, as you know, you hear the phrase “finishing touches” multiple times in conversation. Putting in quarter round after you’ve installed the floor and finished trimming the room is simply one of those things you can do to really “complete” a room. That God awful gap between the base boards and the floor is simply not a good look, and yes, I know that some people are fine with it to lower costs, but the look is ten times better when it’s taken care of. Maybe twenty.
I’d definitely suggest this option if you’re renovating a wide, open area like a basement or something of that nature. Closets and storage rooms aren’t as important, but in rooms where there’s going to be a flow of traffic, where your clients will entertain their guests, and so on…this is an excellent option. It’s the dot on the ‘i’ and the cross on the ‘t’.

Tile Options – Decorative Mosaic

Out of all the options that I’ll list in this post, this is the one that I’d highly suggest. Especially if you’re installing a tiled shower or a backsplash. My father likes to call them “decos,” for short, and we’ve installed quite a bit of them for a number of clients. They absolutely love the look. To me, personally, I think it’s best exemplified in a stand-up, tiled shower. Placing them about eye level, the color blends (or contrast, if you prefer) just make it truly legit design.
Honestly, that’s as best as I can say it. It’s just a 100%, cool-as-all-get-out, bad@$$ design. Straight up. I implore you to at least suggest “deco” tiles when on your next tile job. It’s stunning. Simply stunning. Again, we have a vast amount of some of the finest design and trends in decorative mosaic tiles that one can ask for. Go take a look right here!

Door Options – Custom Paint it

You have many of your standard colors out there to work with, it is true. But, if you want to really make a lasting impression, suggest to your client that they purchase a custom paint to finish of their door. It may seem a bit…quirky, sure, but I’m telling you, it’s effective. Last summer, one of my father’s longtime clients had us install an exterior door for them. The lady of the house wanted the front door to “pop,” so we went with this Canary Yellow color.
\And I’ll tell ya what, if I wasn’t almost blinded while about 50 times as I applied the paint. Super bright. Vivid. Distinct. At first, I thought these characteristics were faults, but once we installed it, and drove up on it for the first time, I began to appreciate its vivacity. It drew the eye, and to me, that’s what mattered most. Suggest a custom paint color, urge your client to think outside of the box, to have a one of a kind feature in a home that will make it entirely their own. Suggest these options, and watch the effects unfurl.

An upgrade that subtly combines luxury with privacy is the addition of a water closet. Essentially a separate room for the toilet within your bathroom, a water closet offers a distinct space for one of the most personal routines. In today’s world, where bathroom space is being maximized, the water closet stands as a testament to thoughtful design, giving an elegant touch while optimizing functionality.

8.  Soft-Close Vanity Drawers

More than just a typical shower, a steam shower offers the therapeutic benefits of steam, enveloping you in a warm cloud that soothes muscles, opens up pores, and aids in relaxation. Incorporating a steam generator into your bathroom design means the luxury of a spa is just a button-press away. Steam showers have also been linked to numerous health benefits, from improved circulation and relief from arthritis to enhanced skin health. Furthermore, the humid environment can be beneficial for respiratory conditions, helping to clear nasal passages and ease breathing. Aesthetically, steam showers can be integrated seamlessly into contemporary bathroom designs, offering clear glass enclosures that showcase feature tiles and premium fixtures. This is an upgrade that not only uplifts the physical senses but also serves as a sanctuary for mental well-being, right in the comfort of your home.

10 Glass Shower Walls

Transform your bathroom into a modern oasis with the installation of sleek glass shower walls. Not only do they impart a contemporary, clean aesthetic, but they also help make the bathroom feel larger by allowing uninterrupted sight lines. MADE IN THE US: One Reason to Love Wellborn Cabinets

Admit it, when you purchase an item from a store and see the “Made in the U.S.” tag, it kinda sorta makes you feel good about your purchase, doesn’t it? I’d venture to say it’s solely because you know that you’ve just supported a company that has its roots instilled in the soil you walk on. It is a homegrown, homemade product that you’ve bought with your hard earned cash. As is the cycle of our nation’s system, and so therefore, you boost the economy, further benefitting businesses locally AND nationally.     This is why, and I’m sure you know, there’s been an influx in buying locally and supporting companies that manufacture goods in America. This is not to say that you don’t condone or intentionally not seek to benefit foreign exchange, but it’s good to know when your money is circulating within the confines of your nation. Simple as that. And that is yet another reason we love Wellborn Cabinets! They’re made right here in the U. S. of A. Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about these homemade cabinets, detailing some history, and why they’re such a hot commodity at our stores.

About Wellborn Cabinets

1961   The Wellborn family have owned and operated Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., since 1961. Think about it, that’s more than fifty years of success! Any business that makes it past the 50-year mark absolutely has a timeless product, in my opinion. You simply don’t make it that far without providing customers a timeless, durable product. The company was originally founded by Paul and Doug Wellborn, and they’re located in the Deep South, in Ashland, Alabama. Their primary goal is a prime reason for their lengthy success. In their website, their goal is “to provide kitchen and bath cabinets crafted by dedicated Wellborn employees with the utmost quality and care.” aerial-photo-1100-x-479   The company had humble beginnings, starting out in a 3,200 sq. ft (holy smokes) building that manufactured cost-effective kitchen and bath cabinets and specialized in kitchen and bath contract sales for government-financed housing. Thirty five years after its inception, Paul Wellborn bought the entire company, became the sole owner, and switched up the Wellborn Cabinet clientele, focusing primarily on residential kitchen and bath dealers. Since then, the company has expanded its reach in both size and product selection, branching out to 6 product lines. In present day, Paul and the Wellborn family manufacture the company cabinets from start to finish in a 2,000,000 sq. ft. (pick up your jaw) facility in Ashland. Their tagline reads: Wellborn Cabinet, Time Tested, Quality Craftsmanship…Your Whole Home Solution. In essence, this company is about their business, and they are NOT playing around. You have to appreciate this kind of dedication.

Wellborn Cabinets – Made in the U.S.A.

godblessamerica   Like I explained before, it’s nice knowing the products you purchase are made here in this great nation. Wellborn Cabinets knows this, and they’ve dedicated their work to keep producing that same quality throughout its history. Their facility completely controls quality from the timber that arrives from the sawmill to the finished cabinet. This, as they say, will ensure you of a premium, quality cabinet. 100% Guaranteed. Also, this company is listed on numerous Made in America/USA websites with other manufacturers who also produce their products here, including MadeinUSA.com, KeepitUSAmade.com, and Backintheusa.us.

Wellborn Cabinets Go Green

environment   This company is in line with a heavy commitment to our environment and for good reason, right? Their website states, “environmental stewardship has been part of Wellborn’s culture since the beginning. This responsibility has always been about more than just words and has been proven through decades of actions, investments, and practices.” Here’s another little tidbit that I find equally as fascinating: Wellborn has recycling programs that utilize wood waste to generate power and steam and continue to lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions through technology. In fact, the energy they gain from waste powers hear for 5, 124 homes in one year. That’s incredible.   greenchoice   The company “utilizes steam from from the wood fired co-generation plant in the dry kilns, heating ovens, and paint room. The process saves approximately 300,000 (MCF) thousand cubic feet of natural gas annually, a non-renewable energy source, by using collected shavings.  They also partner with their contributors to further their environmental practices! This, as they say on their page, is why you’ll find the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program seal on their cabinetry. It’s clairvoyantly clear that this company has pushed themselves in the right direction towards a better future, perfecting their practices for a safer, cleaner environment. In any case, this is the stage where it’s time to pinpoint exactly what you’d like to do. Want more kitchen space? Then perhaps you need to knock out a wall or two. Need more storage? Then it’s time to think about more cabinets. home remodeling Think your bathroom would be more suitable to your liking if you had a standing shower as opposed to a tub? Figure it in. Let you and your family create a “roundtable” atmosphere, dishing out ideas and make your new remodel functional as well as satisfying. If you make it a fun activity with the whole family or just you and your spouse, then it won’t be a drag or something to just get over with. It can and will be an exciting process.

Low Maintenance Bathroom Sinks For Families

bathroom sinks

I think we can all agree that bathrooms are an area in a household that generally requires a little more effort to keep up than other rooms in your home. If you’re like me, you dread the day you’ve dedicated to cleaning this room because, let’s just be honest, there are about fifty other things you’d rather spend your Sunday afternoon doing. Cleaning sinks? 100% not one of them, especially with Fall weather in the horizon.
Much rather be at a pumpkin patch at Huber’s farms, or preparing a Halloween costume for a party, or taking a lazy day, sipping hot, flavored coffee and cuddled up next to Cailey, my girlfriend, breaking into a Harry Potter marathon. THAT is my ideal Sunday. But, alas, we’re human, and we tend to get a bit messy, and messes were meant to be cleaned. Luckily, there are products that you can install that will make cleaning day just a little bit easier. Like a sink, for example. You may not be aware of this, but some sink material and styles are better than others in terms of maintenance.

Stainless Steel Bathroom Sinks

Believe it or not, this style is actually trending in bathroom design. Now, I know you’re probably thinking that stainless steel belongs more in a kitchen than it does a bathroom, but I think you’d be surprised by the look. That’s not exactly why it’s such a hot trend right now, however. It’s the low-maintenance and upkeep that sets these bathroom sinks apart from the rest. According to a consumer report, this material withstood a number of tests to prove its outstanding durability.
“They fended off stains from cleaning products and drain cleaner, and also resisted heat, dents, and dings.” My opinion? This is a very unique idea. If you’re looking to go against the grain and reap the benefits in the process, I’d consider this choice, for sure.

All-in-One Bathroom Sinks

This sink style is actually pretty neat, if you ask me. The sink itself is molded to the countertop. You simply fasten it to the wall, and you’re all but done. I suggest this style because it is stupid easy to clean, seeing as there’s no ridges or seams to contend with. In one smooth, fluid motion, you can clean this bathroom sink without the worry of having to deal with nooks and edges.
Typically, these sinks are available in porcelain and ceramic, which a more standard material for your sinks, but within reason. Also, this type of sink is perfect for family bathrooms. With the amount of traffic and use, maintenance tends to always be on the mind.

Vessel Bathroom Sinks

Ah, my personal favorite. I can still remember when my dad first installed one of these for a previous customer. He’d already done so when I visited the work site, and when I walked into the fairly large bathroom, it was literally the first thing that caught my eye. Jaw dropped a bit, and I’m pretty sure something like, “Woah!” escaped my mouth. Or an excited expletive, I can’t really remember.
The point here is, it’s a mesmerizing look. Truly. It’s a beautiful crafted sink bowl that sits on top of the countertop. But be careful when you install it, though. Set it too high and washing your hands will be a task like no other – extremely uncomfortable. These are available in a variety of finishes like polished stainless steel, hand-painted porcelain, carved stone and spun glass. These are all durable materials, particularly the stainless steel as we’ve discussed before.

Material of Bathroom Sinks

Just a little fair warning before we part ways today. According to the consumer report I talked about earlier, you shouldn’t always be prone to go with the most common materials in a bathroom sink. In fact, the report said, you should look at other ones first before going that route. This is solely because during their tests, tempered glass, enameled cast iron, and some of the acrylic sinks dented slightly or chipped away during their impact tests. But, let’s be real here, you’re not going to be hammering down on your sink for no reason, right?
I hope you enjoyed this blog post, and it gave you a little insight on which sink will be the best for you and your household! Just remember, sometimes, in the long run, going against the grain is an absolutely great thing that provides a stunning effect.
