Top Home Trends from KBIS and IBS Shows

I had the pleasure of attending KBIS in January, and these are the top home trends that I spotted at the show this year!

One of the best things about going to this incredible kitchen and bathroom showcase is the ability to get to see all of the styles, materials and design elements that will be taking over for the next year in new construction and remodeling. It's great to know what will be coming and what we should offer our clients that's in line with the top kitchen and bath trends.

14 Top Home Trends: Kitchen, Bath, and More!

Slab Cabinet Door Styles

Slab doors are a type of cabinet door style. This is a style in which the entire cabinet door is flat, without any indentions or raised areas. This is a very popular door style in Europe, but American trends are always a few years behind. Now, they're finally making their way into American Culture! I saw slab doors everywhere at KBIS! This is one of the most important of our top home trends because if people adopt this look, it will make popular kitchen style much different than it has been in years past.

Black Framed Windows

For so many years, windows have had mostly white frames. It's been the norm. My home was built in the 70's, and the windows actually had black frames when they were installed. Although my windows are way past needing to be replaced, this decades old style has come back into style again and it one of our top home trends! It definitly speaks to the farmhouse look that's been all the rage this year.

Metallic Tile

Metallic tiles were a huge new product category at the KBIS and International Builders Show this year. It's a much different look that what I've seen in years past. Top home trends like this are fun and funky, but still elegant and stylish. You would primarily see these types of tiles in modern homes and they definitly make a statement!

Freestanding Soaker Tubs

Freestanding tubs are my absolute FAVORITE! They are not only totally stylish, and an art piece in their own right, but they are great for relaxation and healing. Soaker tubs allow you to submerge your whole body and let the hot water do it's thang. Who wants to be cramped in a tub or have to kink their neck just trying to soak an aching back? Not me!

Furniture Style Vanities

Furniture style vanities are all the rage right now. A furniture style vanity is one that has leg and looks more like furniture. Most regular vanities resemble cabinets, with a toe kick at the bottom. These have a much more high end feel and add an elegant touch to your bathroom!

The Farmhouse Look

The farmhouse look is one of my favorites! What makes a look farmhouse? A few things tend to be used over and over in this look. First, metals. Especially black metal. Woods are another popular element, and is often paired with metal. The blue color shown here and the clean shaker style of this interior door have a very farmhouse feel as well. Lastly? SHIPLAP WALL! Gotta love them.

Quartz, Quartz, Quartz

Quartz has been the top countertop material for a few years now, but I have to say that I don't think I saw one single granite company exhibiting at this entire show. I was SHOCKED! Maybe they're just hiding, but quartz was definitly making the show it's own and standing out as the reigning king of countertops! Why? It's gorgeous, no maintenance is required, and it's the strongest and most stain resistant material around!

Patterened Tile

Patterned tile is so beautiful. So many of them are actually hand painted (although you will pay much more for those). They come in porcelain or ceramic materials and really add a unique personal touch to your bathroom floor, backplash or even in your laundry room or on a fireplace!

Brushed Gold Fixtures

Some used to call it brass. But brass is SO 20 years ago. haha Now, we're calling it brushed gold. It's got a more brushed finish than typical bright shiny brass, but I've also seen glossy finish gold fixtures as well. This finish pairs great with blacks, greys, whites and navy. You can expect to see much more of it in the next few years, I'm sure!

Taupe and Grey

Taupe and grey cabinet finishes are taking over! Grey has been hot for the last 2 years, but now taupe is being added in the mix. Stained wood cabinets, which have been out of the spotlight for a while now, is getting a comeback as long as the stain is a taupe or grey mixture, which is sometimes called "drift". I for one love the color!

Geometric Tile

I've seen so many cool geometric shapes at the show this year, and it always makes a statement. Whether it's square and triangle shapes as shown below, hexagons or trapezoids as shown a few images above, the look is the same: stunning. It definitly gives a modern feel for the most part, but I've seen some great octagon flooring that worked perfectly in a farmhouse style room.

Still Subway Tile

Subway  tile is just an old favorite that might never go out of style. I love the simplicity, but also the unique elements that have been added recently! You see a lot more colored tile, or those with texture. The one shown below is a handcrafted tile, and has a wavy finish as you can see. What do you think??

Beautiful Barn Doors

Barn doors are still popular and they most likely will be for some time! I love the fact that any style door, modern, rustic, farmhouse, craftsman, old world or traditional can all be used as a barn door. The sliding aspect is more fun and it also can be a stunning statement piece in your home!

In and Under Cabinet Lighting

Under and in cabinet lighting was a HUGE trend that I saw at KBIS and IBS this year. It's a great way to showcase beautiful cabinets and add an extra WOW factor to your kitchen or bath. It's also functional as it gives off light at night when you may not want all the lights on.

2018 Remodeling Trends To Watch For

With a new year comes new 2018 remodeling trends. Each year we come up with a list of styles to predict, observe, love or hate. Here is what we've found to be at the top of the list for 2018! Let us know what you think in the comments!

1. Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are raining king of countertops. Granite has slowly been losing market share and is not longer in first place on our list of 2018 remodeling trends. Why? Well, quartz countertops offer very little downside. The opening price point of $58/sf FULLY INSTALLED (at Builders Surplus) is comparable to custom granite.

The variety of colors is so much greater than you could get in granite, especially solid white. It's stain proof, scratch resistant and heat resistant. Some brands are also completely antibacterial. Huge benefits, no negatives, at least in my book. We LOVE Quartz Countertops!

2. Gold and Brass fixtures

Whether you call it gold, or you call it brass, the fact remains: it’s a 2018 remodeling trend. The contrast of gold against colors like black, grey and navy can provide a stunning statement. You can even mix it up and mix metals, like black finishes! Trust me, you won’t regret it.

3. Effective Storage Solutions

Kitchens are one room that become cluttered and dirty fairly easily. In the last few years we’ve seen an increase in cool storage ideas, but we believe that 2018 is going to be the year that the market really embraces them. There are so many amazing ways to organize your kitchen to free up space, make it more functional, and fit more in your cabinets in a way that you weren’t able to do before! Check out all of our ’11 Minutes or Less’ products and see how you can organize your space!

4. Large format tile

One of my favorite 2018 remodeling trends is large format tile. Large format tile is a tile larger than 15″ on any side. This included wood look tile, which has become a huge trend in the last year. Large format time can make a space look bigger and it can be less expensive and time consuming to install that smaller pieces. When you use one style throughout a room, it can add a nice level of uniformity to the space.

5. Concrete Tile Styles

This year, I predict we’ll see more urban and industrial style spaces using tile that imitates concrete! Concrete can be hard to install if you don’t have it already exposed, so this is the perfect alternative! It gives you an upscale, yet rough around the edges look. Greys go with just about anything, so you can’t go wrong!

6. Cabinet Colors: White stays, grey grows, taupe is trending, color is coming!

White kitchen cabinets have been the top cabinet color for several years. It’s not going out completely. White cabinets can do a few things. They make a space look bigger, and give a feel of cleanliness to a sometimes cluttered space. It’s a timeless look that probably won’t EVER go out of style. But it is taking a backseat to some of the other hot colors of the moment.

Grey has been growing in popularity for the last 2 years, and we’ll continue to see that with more dove grey colors, a lighter and creamier grey than we’ve seen a lot in the past. Taupe cabinets are one of my favorite trends of 2018!

Stained wood cabinets have not been on trend in quite a few years, but this gives that natural wood feel, while still being a painted cabinet. You’ll see light taupe as shown below, but there are darker wood stains that are mixed with taupe that bring an elegance back to stained wood that we haven’t seen for a while.

Taupe cabinets, 2018 remodeling trends

Color is coming, people! Bold is no longer just for the brave. Well, you probably need to have a slightly daring style, but it’s becoming more commonplace to see brightly or boldly colored cabinets. Blues, such as navy, robins egg blue, and cerulean are all colors I’m loving on cabinets at the moment!

7. Dark Flooring

Dark flooring is making a come back in 2018! The rich dark stains contrasted against walls, window frames and furniture give a crisp and elegant style to any room. It feels upscale and sophisticated. While lighter floors still look great, we expect to sell a lot of dark wood this year!

8. Patterned Tile

Patterned tile is one of my favorite 2018 remodeling trends. I love is so much that I’m about to do my master bathroom floor in the tile top right :)! It’s fun, funky, and elegant all at the same time. It adds visual interest, movement and true style! This can go on floors, backsplashes, fireplaces or accent walls! It’s a great way to add pizzaz to any space!

  patterned tile 2018 remodeling trends

9. Black framed windows

Black framed windows were very common decades ago, but they’re starting to make a comeback, and look darn good while doing it! This gives a more modern vide but can be used on any style home to give an updated feel. Love them!

black framed windows, 2018 remodeling trends

10. Bold Interior Doors

Interior doors are no longer the boring, standard, 6 panel white doors you’re used to seeing. They’re colorful, they have unique patterns, designs, and materials used on them. Barn doors are used on any doorway and we’re absolutely loving it! It takes a boring necessity and turns it into a focal point in your home.

There you have it, my predictions for 2018 remodeling trends. Let me know which ones you love or those that you don’t in the comments below! We’ll see what happens as the year goes on!

Countertop Trends: The looks of the moment

2017 was a great year for kitchen design, with many beautiful countertop trends. Today, we’ll be covering all of them! Some new, and some we’ve been seeing for a while, but all stunning in their own way.

Any great kitchen needs a great countertop, and we’ll show you several options to take your kitchen to the next level!

Want to get started on your own kitchen remodel or countertop replacement? Click here to schedule a free design consultation!

Countertop Trends from 2017 and Beyond

1. Quarz is {Still} in!

Quartz has been making a statement in countertop trends for the last several years, and it’s here to stay.

Quartz has so many incredible qualities, that it’s no wonder. Silestone quartz is completely antibacterial, so it’s great for restaurants and kitchens alike. Quartz is the strongest of all countertop materials, so it’s not going to scratch or chip easily. It’s heat and stain resistant and very low maintenance and easy to clean!

We’re seeing a lot of solid whites, grays, and some looks with sparkle and movement!

2. Marble and Marble Looks

Marble has been hot in the world of countertop trends, with it’s bright white base and light veining. While some people love marble, some find it a little too high maintenance. That’s why many opt for quartz colors that imitate marble. There are so many colors of quartz, due to the fact that it’s man made, so you can find many variations of quartz that looks like marble so that you can find the perfect fit for your home!

3. Light, Neutral Colors

Clean looks are in right now, but not everyone wants a sterile kitchen environment. While solid whites may not be the most popular, light and neutral colors are definitly center stage. Grey’s are one of my favorite neutrals of the moment. You’ll find many light granite options but the options are endless with quartz. Bright, bold colors are fading away at the moment.

4. Clean lines

Clean lines are important to discuss when talking about countertop trends. We’re seeing lots of eased edges as well as double radius, which is a soft curve on the top and bottom of the edge of the countertop. For modern homes, waterfall countertops can give clean lines while providing a big impact. Opting for an undermount sink as opposed to a drop in also gives more of a seamless look.

5. Laminate Countertops

Laminate has come leaps and bounds in the last few years in terms of style options and quality. Some prices may have gone up a bit because of it, but it’s still going to be your most affordable countertop option. You can get marble looks, wood looks, granite looks and more. You don’t have to sacrifice style due to price when you choose laminate countertops.

6. Butcherblock Countertops

Butcherblock is one of my favorite countertop trends! I’m a lover of all things wood. It gives you a gorgeous rustic, farmhouse or cottage feel. It can be your main countertop or an accent piece on an island. It’s a bit more high maintenance than other materials due to keeping it sealed, but it’s definitely worth the small bit of time and effort you’ll put into it.

7. No countertop style backsplash

In the past it has been very common to have a short backsplash made of your countertop material. This is not nearly as popular, as people are opting to tile their entire backsplash area.

Conclusion

Countertops will always be a huge part of a kitchen design. While you don’t want to go too ‘trendy’, it’s great to know what we’re seeing in terms of design trends. We hope this list of the hottest countertop trends will inspire you for your own kitchen remodel!

Homearama 2017: Top Bathroom Trends

One of my favorite events of the year is Homearama, which comes every July. Homearama is an event featuring many new construction homes, which showcases the latest and greatest trends in building and interior design. This is a great way to see what the hot items will be for the year, and see some of the incredibly beautiful spaces that the builders and designers put together.
Today, I’ll be showing you what we found to be the top bathroom trends at Homearama 2017 at Poplar Woods. If you’re in the market for a new construction home or remodeling your bathroom, you might be able to use some of these great ideas!

Homearama Bathroom Trends:

Freestanding Tubs

One of my absolute favorite trends in bathroom design from Homearama is the emergence of freestanding tubs. You typically won’t see standard tubs in master bathrooms anymore. They’re really only found in kids bathrooms these days. I for one don’t mind a bit. They’re larger than most regular tubs. They’re called soaker tubs for a reason, you can really stretch out and they are much more comfy on your back.  They also look like an art piece in your bathroom!

Walk In Showers

Due to the lack of master bathroom shower/tub combos, we see many more walk in showers. The showers we’re seeing are HUGE and tiled from top to bottom. Mesh back tile is featured on the floor, and a mosaic tile is usually used as an accent or to cover the walls.
walk in shower homearama 2017

Hexagon Tile

Hexagon tile was a trend at KBIS and Homearama last year, but I don’t wish it out of style any time soon. It’s a classic shape that adds geometric interest to your space. It looks great on the floor of your bathroom, in small format or large, and can be found often on shower floors or as shower accents. You can see it below and on the two shower floors above!
Hexagon tile Homearama 2017

Herringbone Tile Patterns

Herringbone has also been popular in recent years and looks like it’s here to stay. Herringbone pattern tile can come in all shapes, sizes and materials. We saw a lot of glass mesh back wall tile, as well as some herringbone pattern marble floor tile, among other things. It’s a great look for any bathroom! You can see it above in the accent strip, and below.

Large Format Tile & Large Format Subway Tile

Large format tile, specifically large format subway tile has become popular recently, but we saw it EVERYWHERE at Homearama this year. It flooded the shower walls and surrounded the bath tubs. Large format tile is anything that is larger than 15″ on any side. You’ll see it in almost every shower featured above. Large format subway tile is typically 4×16 as opposed to the typical 3×6. It makes the space look bigger and goes up much quicker than smaller format subway tile and it’s such a classy look!

Wallpaper

One trend from Homearama that I’ve seen in other rooms in previous years has now made it’s way to the bathroom – Wallpaper! It’s definitly making a comeback. I for one love wallpaper, and it can really add a punch of personality to your space. Most of the time you’ll find it in the powder room, although you can use it in whichever bathroom you want!

Neutrals – Cabinets & Countertops & Flooring

The main thing I spotted at Homearama bathrooms this year is the clean neutrals on just about every surface. The painted vanities were usually in white, often in grey, and sometimes in black or beige. White countertops with grey or black veining was prevelant, and the tile in the showers and on the floor were neutrals as well. However, they still managed to pull of a lot of personality! Your colors don’t have to be bold in order to have style.

Top 10 Interior Design Trends Spotted At KBIS

Week before last, while visiting the Kitchen & Bath International Showcase in Las Vegas, we spotted 10 new interior design trends worth noting. KBIS, along with the National Kitchen and Bath Association is an inspiring showcase that highlights the latest products, trends and technologies in the remodeling industry. KBIS can be a great way to see what is up in coming in the design world, then taking those products to our customers to enjoy! This is an industry only event that we are happy to share with you by highlighting the top 10 trends that we spotted this year.

Our favorite Interior Design Trends For 2016

1. Arabesque  Patterns

Arabesque tile is one of my absolute favorites. It has such a unique shape that can look modern, french country, vintage, eclectic, or traditional depending on the material, color and finish. This is a real eye catcher in an kitchen or bathroom and will make your space stand out from the rest. We will be expanding our selection of arabesque backsplash tile options shortly, so don’t forget to check back to see the new sections!

2. Colorful and Unique Appliances

Colorful Appliances - Interior Design Trends

Colorful appliances were everywhere at KBIS! The Suzanne Kasler stove to the upper left is a true show piece. This would be the highlight of your kitchen without a doubt. The colors available are bottom left of this paragraph. The retro aqua appliances are amazing and you can really freshen up a drab space quickly with these pieces!

3. Hexagon Patterns

Hexagon is definitely rising to the top in terms of favorites, as the selection available has expanded greatly in the last year. No matter what your color scheme or style, you can most likely find a hexagon to match. The geometric feel usually works best in a contemporary space, in my opinion, but don’t let that stop you – the sky is the limit!

4. Reclaimed Wood

This is my favorite trend, hands down. I absolutely adore the rustic, farmhouse feel, where you mix new pieces with old to give it a nostalgic feel without being outdated. You can use reclaimed wood in a variety of spaces: Light fixtures, open shelves, on your walls, and on a vanity front! the image to the bottom right is an amazing new piece called Stik Wood! It is thinly sliced completely real reclaimed wood, with a sticky back attached to it. It is designed to easily be applied to walls, ceilings, kitchen islands & more! We can’t wait to start carrying Stik Wood Designs in store!

5. Taking On Technology

Technology has grown immensely in the kitchen & bathroom space. The video below shows an island that can raise and lower at the push of a button. The image below it are cabinets that drop down from the bottom, allowing for easy wheelchair accessibility. There are so many cool options that serve a purpose and will impress your friends all at the same time!

6. Playful Patterns

I love this trend, as life is too short to take it too seriously! These playful, fun patterns just bring a smile to my face whenever I see them. Adding something colorful or unique to an otherwise calm space is a great way to add character and charm without going overboard!

7. Natural Stone

Natural stone is on the rise and the reason is simple – it looks great, it’s durable, and you can use it in virtually any space, with any style. There is a color or shape for modern looks, rustic looks, or traditional looks. Use the pebble style stone on your shower floor, the ledge stone on your home’s exterior, the larger stone on your fireplace and you’ve built a cozy home with natural style!

8. Colorful Cabinets

As a lover of color, this is another one of my favorites. The kelley green cabinets to the left are part of Wellborn Cabinets’ Color Inspire collection. This allows you to take any color from Sherwin Williams, and have them transform your cabinets with it! This is a very unique option that allows you to have a truly one of a kind kitchen or bathroom.

9. Cabinet Illumination

Under-cabinet illumination is that little something extra that makes a big difference. Not only for looks, this trend is also for function. It really makes your kitchen look like something you would see in a magazine, with little expense, depending on the style of lighting that you choose. It is easy to have this installed with virtually any cabinet line.

10. Large Format Tile

Large format tile is one of the biggest trends in tile today. Large format tile is considered anything that is 15″ longer on any side, however, some consider 12″ or more to begin to get into the large format category. Below are two really fun options, but large format tile is becoming available in anything you can image, from polished marble, travertine, and wood look tile, to some of the more “out there options” similar to what is shown below. Make sure to have a professional install your large format tile, as it is much different, and much more difficult, than traditional tile.
