Front Door Replacement Decisions

Interestingly enough, front door replacement is the fastest, best and easiest way to automatically increase the value of your home. However, choosing the right type and material is key in this fast equity fix.
For your home, the front door is it’s face. Maybe even it’s smile, more specifically. It is one of the first things that you or your guests will notice when driving up to you house. That’s why choosing the perfect front door replacement is so important to the curb appeal of your house! Not only that, but it must be able to withstand rain, snow, sleet, hail and scorching sun. It may seem like an easy feat, but for many front doors, it’s too much to ask.  In this article, we will go over your front door replacement options and what the pros and cons might be for each style and material – typically fiberglass, steel, and wood.  Most combine several materials; for example, many fiberglass and steel doors have wood frames. But it’s the surface material that most affects appearance, durability, security, and price.

Front Door Replacement Materials:

Steel Front Door replacementSteel doors are probably the most popular options for front door replacement, for several reasons. The first is that they are the least expensive. However, premium models can cost nearly as much as a solid wood door. Steel doors are durable, more secure than wood, and will never warp, twist or crack. They hold up well in the elements. Generally, the interior features a steel or wooden inner frame filled with insulating foam, resulting in a door that provides as much as five times the R-value of an ordinary wood door. However, for all their durability, steel doors are vulnerable to dents, and if the painted skin is breached by a scratch or severe dent, it can rust. It’s also not a good idea to combine a steel door with a storm door; heat build-up between the doors can cause the surface to peel.

Steel and fiberglass doors typically have more insulating value than wood doors. Models that are Energy Star-qualified must be independently tested and certified, and often boast tighter-fitting frames, energy-efficient cores, and, for models with glass, double- or triple-panel insulating glass to reduce heat transfer. But you may not save as much as you think, since doors are a small part of the surface area of a house and typically don’t allow significant amounts of warm air to escape. What’s more, heat is generally lost through air leaks around the door,                                                     not through the door itself.
exterior-wooden-front-door-replacementWood doors are the most common option in front door replacement. Versatility and beauty are where this material really shines. There are hundreds of varieties of natural-finish stock and custom wood doors, which come in oak, cherry, walnut, mahogany, maple, fir, and pine. You’ll also find paint-grade doors in several softwood varieties, such as pine and western hemlock. Many stock wood doors are a sandwich of wood-veneer skins over an engineered-wood core. This configuration minimizes the expansion and contraction that cause warping. At about $200 or so to start, they’re a low-cost alternative to solid-wood doors. Look for tough, furniture-grade veneers at least 1/16 inch thick; anything thinner damages too easily.
When shopping for prefinished wood doors, look for durable stains and clear finishes, such as polyurethane. High-gloss sheen offer the best protection for painted doors. Whichever finish you choose, apply it to the top and bottom edges. This helps prevent a wood door from absorbing moisture and swelling. Also look for careful detailing. As a rule, the more intricate the carvings and moldings, and the thicker and wider the stiles and rails, the better the door. The same goes for panel thickness. At Builders Surplus, we have a HUGE selection of solid wood doors that can be pre-hung for you.
fiberglass front door replacement
Aluminum doors
are relatively new to the market and share many of the same advantages as aluminum siding, like a baked-on enamel finish that never needs repainting and won’t rust. There are literally dozens of styles and colors available, including wood finishes. You can also combine an aluminum door with a storm door without fear of the hazards of heat build-up. The main drawback of this type of front door replacement is that, like steel, aluminum can dent, and since they are usually built to order, aluminum doors are more expensive than steel.
Fiberglass doors are much more resistant to damage than steel or aluminum and can be made to mimic genuine wood. However, they come free of the drawbacks. These doors can be painted or stained any way you choose; in fact, they should be repainted every five years or so, making them slightly higher-maintenance than steel. Beneath their molded surface is a framework of wooden stiles and rails, including wood edges for the lock set. Voids in the framework are filled with polyurethane-foam insulation. Fiberglass-composite doors carry long warranties and are smart choices for humid climates.
As far as styles are concerned, there are hundreds to choose from, but the main variations will be in windows or engravings. You can find rectangular doors, arched rounded doors, single or double doors. Obviously, the more light that you would like, the amazing-eto-doors-entry-door-decoration-brick-floor-white-paint-wall-decorated-entry-doors-ideasmore windows you should choose, but too many windows can be somewhat of a privacy issue. You can find window panels to go on each side of your door that offer a nice alternative. You can also find a door that has a separate top and bottom piece. This acts almost as a window. You can have the bottom closed and the top open for some fresh air!
At Builders Surplus in Louisville or Newport, our front door replacement options are endless! We offer virtually every style and material that you could be looking for. Our selection is far to large to put on the website, so come on in and take look around! Our sales associates will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.

2018 Remodeling Trends To Watch For

With a new year comes new 2018 remodeling trends. Each year we come up with a list of styles to predict, observe, love or hate. Here is what we've found to be at the top of the list for 2018! Let us know what you think in the comments!

1. Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are raining king of countertops. Granite has slowly been losing market share and is not longer in first place on our list of 2018 remodeling trends. Why? Well, quartz countertops offer very little downside. The opening price point of $58/sf FULLY INSTALLED (at Builders Surplus) is comparable to custom granite.

The variety of colors is so much greater than you could get in granite, especially solid white. It's stain proof, scratch resistant and heat resistant. Some brands are also completely antibacterial. Huge benefits, no negatives, at least in my book. We LOVE Quartz Countertops!

2. Gold and Brass fixtures

Whether you call it gold, or you call it brass, the fact remains: it’s a 2018 remodeling trend. The contrast of gold against colors like black, grey and navy can provide a stunning statement. You can even mix it up and mix metals, like black finishes! Trust me, you won’t regret it.

3. Effective Storage Solutions

Kitchens are one room that become cluttered and dirty fairly easily. In the last few years we’ve seen an increase in cool storage ideas, but we believe that 2018 is going to be the year that the market really embraces them. There are so many amazing ways to organize your kitchen to free up space, make it more functional, and fit more in your cabinets in a way that you weren’t able to do before! Check out all of our ’11 Minutes or Less’ products and see how you can organize your space!

4. Large format tile

One of my favorite 2018 remodeling trends is large format tile. Large format tile is a tile larger than 15″ on any side. This included wood look tile, which has become a huge trend in the last year. Large format time can make a space look bigger and it can be less expensive and time consuming to install that smaller pieces. When you use one style throughout a room, it can add a nice level of uniformity to the space.

5. Concrete Tile Styles

This year, I predict we’ll see more urban and industrial style spaces using tile that imitates concrete! Concrete can be hard to install if you don’t have it already exposed, so this is the perfect alternative! It gives you an upscale, yet rough around the edges look. Greys go with just about anything, so you can’t go wrong!

6. Cabinet Colors: White stays, grey grows, taupe is trending, color is coming!

White kitchen cabinets have been the top cabinet color for several years. It’s not going out completely. White cabinets can do a few things. They make a space look bigger, and give a feel of cleanliness to a sometimes cluttered space. It’s a timeless look that probably won’t EVER go out of style. But it is taking a backseat to some of the other hot colors of the moment.

Grey has been growing in popularity for the last 2 years, and we’ll continue to see that with more dove grey colors, a lighter and creamier grey than we’ve seen a lot in the past. Taupe cabinets are one of my favorite trends of 2018!

Stained wood cabinets have not been on trend in quite a few years, but this gives that natural wood feel, while still being a painted cabinet. You’ll see light taupe as shown below, but there are darker wood stains that are mixed with taupe that bring an elegance back to stained wood that we haven’t seen for a while.

Color is coming, people! Bold is no longer just for the brave. Well, you probably need to have a slightly daring style, but it’s becoming more commonplace to see brightly or boldly colored cabinets. Blues, such as navy, robins egg blue, and cerulean are all colors I’m loving on cabinets at the moment!

7. Dark Flooring

Dark flooring is making a come back in 2018! The rich dark stains contrasted against walls, window frames and furniture give a crisp and elegant style to any room. It feels upscale and sophisticated. While lighter floors still look great, we expect to sell a lot of dark wood this year!

8. Patterned Tile

Patterned tile is one of my favorite 2018 remodeling trends. I love is so much that I’m about to do my master bathroom floor in the tile top right :)! It’s fun, funky, and elegant all at the same time. It adds visual interest, movement and true style! This can go on floors, backsplashes, fireplaces or accent walls! It’s a great way to add pizzaz to any space!

9. Black framed windows

Black framed windows were very common decades ago, but they’re starting to make a comeback, and look darn good while doing it! This gives a more modern vide but can be used on any style home to give an updated feel. Love them!

10. Bold Interior Doors

Interior doors are no longer the boring, standard, 6 panel white doors you’re used to seeing. They’re colorful, they have unique patterns, designs, and materials used on them. Barn doors are used on any doorway and we’re absolutely loving it! It takes a boring necessity and turns it into a focal point in your home.

There you have it, my predictions for 2018 remodeling trends. Let me know which ones you love or those that you don’t in the comments below! We’ll see what happens as the year goes on!

Easy ways to refresh your home for the holidays

The holiday season is one that is primarily spent with friends and family, making it a great time to want to refresh your home! However, you may not want to do a full on remodel. In this article, we’ll show you some less intensive remodeling projects that you can knock out in a short period of time to refresh your home in time for Turkey Day and eggnog by the fire!

Refresh your home with ease!

Update Your Countertops

This is one of the more major upgrades i’ve listed, but updating your countertops is one of the best ways to refresh your home. Replacing countertops doesn’t have to be an intensive, long term project. If all you’re doing is switching your tops, you can order your your new countertops while you still have some on your cabinets. They can template right over top of your existing countertops, so that means you’ll remove them, or have them removed, right before installation. While the process could take 3-4 weeks in terms of order, template and installation, it won’t effect your daily life one bit! And the end result will no doubt be fabulous!

Upgrade your Front Door

Most people agree that updating your front door is an amazing way to refresh your home. Not just great for looks and energy efficiency, a new front door can give you a great return on investment if and when you decide to sell. This is the first impression of your home to the outside world, so you want it to be a good one. Not to mention how great it will look with your beautiful holiday wreaths!

Add a Kitchen Backsplash

A backsplash is an amazing way to add personality and style to your kitchen! If you don’t already have one, it’s a perfect way to refresh your home and make the same old kitchen feel new again. With so many style, size and color options, there is something for everyone! You can try to do it yourself, or you can hire someone to do it for a relatively small price tag.

Switch out your Powder Room Vanity

Your powder room is the bathroom that gets a ton of use, as any guests will find their way there, and your family will typically use when they’re in the common areas. For this reason, they can get beat up and grungy fairly quickly if you’re not careful. Switching out the vanity in your powder room or guest bathroom is a great way to refresh your home. You could find a cool color, a more modern style, or something that doesn’t have nicks, dings, or stains all over it. It can really do a lot for the rest of the space! Because these bathrooms are typically smaller, so are their vanities, which means they are cheaper as well! A pedestal sinks is a great way to go, but our new 24″ furniture style vanities would be another perfect choice for any space.

Add Decorative Corbels

Adding corbels underneath your kitchen island, shelves, or even cabinets is a great way to add some pop in the kitchen! You can add them under your fireplace mantle as well for a more decorative and cozy feel. Corbels aren’t too pricey and the look they bring is stunning!

Change your Cabinet Hardware

Changing your cabinet hardware is a great way to completely change the look of your cabinets! Go with a different finish (Yes, you can mix finishes!) or with a completely different style, and you’re kitchen will feel new in a flash! This is one of the most affordable and easiest ways to refresh your home! This is definitly a project you could do yourself, and quickly.

Switch out your patio door(s)

Patio doors are a great way to feel connected to the outside. They bring in that great natural light and look gorgeous in any home! But how old are your patio doors? If they’re like mine, they’re old. They get scratched by the dogs when they’re trying to get in, they get colored on by the kids. And they aren’t exactly on the top of my deep cleaning list, so they can start to look rough. Replacing your patio doors with some full-lite, bright white stunners is a great way to update your space!

Upgrade your kitchen faucet

Upgrading a kitchen faucet is not only a great way to refresh your home, it’s a functional idea before the holidays! I love my high arc faucet with a sprayer. You get the food off of pots and pans easily, can fill large pots easily and can get all the gunk out of your sink with the extended spray head. Perfect for holiday cooking!

Add Crown Moulding

Crown moulding is a perfect way to add a finished, elegant touch to your home. It makes your ceilings look higher and your home look more complete. It’s not TOO difficult to install yourself, and if you don’t need a ton of it, the price is pretty low. You wouldn’t believe the difference some crown could make!

Get a Large Kitchen Sink

Getting a new kitchen sink can be a small task, or a slightly larger task. If you have a top mount sink, it could be simple. If you’re trying to change out an undermount, especially if you want to switch sink shapes, that could be difficult. But if your switching your countertops as well, it won’t be a challenge at all. If you fall into the easy side of this upgrade, go big! While everyone has different needs, I’ve found that my HUGE single bowl sink has been awesome. We’ve bathed our baby, can thaw large cuts of meat easily, can wash any fruits and veggies we choose, and fill or clean large pots of pans. The benefits are great when it comes to cooking, so it’s a perfect way to refresh your home for the holidays!
There are our top 10 easy ways to refresh your home this holiday season! Which one’s will you try?

10 Winter Home Maintenance Tips That Pay Off

The fall is the perfect time to start thinking about winter home maintenance. This is because there are several things you need to do before the season begins to ensure a safe and comfortable winter season in your home.

10 Winter Home Maintenance Tips

‘High’ Priorities:

Gutters –

  • Gutter cleaning is critical to winter home maintenance. Remove debris from gutters. If water backs up, it can cause ice dams or leaks. It can also damage gutters or siding.

Roof –

  • Inspect and upgrade attic insulation and ventilation.
  • Purchase a roof rake for easy winter home maintenance on your roof.
  • Remove snow as quickly as possible after storms.

Trees –

  • Trees can be a big issue, so make sure they are part of your winter home maintenance plans. Keep an eye on any trees close to your house. Winter storms can cause trees to fall. Dead trees will fall much more easily, so if you have any in your yard, it’s best to remove them.
  • Trim branches close to windows or the roof. Snow can make them heavy causing them to break and potentially damage your home, or worse, someone!

A Clean Sweep:

Pathways –

  • Try to clear anything slippery, sharp or that is cluttering your path ways. When it’s cold and raining, snowing, icy or sleeting, these things could be dangerous.
  • Clear your pathways/driveway right away after a snow to avoid injury as well. The longer you wait, the more ice can build up.

snow path clearing winter home maintenance

Chimneys –

Have your fireplace cleaned by a certified chimney sweep every year for your standard winter home maintenance. It’s a safety measure since buildup of creosote from previous fires inside the chimney can actually cause a house fire. You’ll be using it a lot in the winter so it’s imperative that it’s clean before the season.

Water Woes:

Frozen Pipes –

  • As one of the most important winter home maintenance, pay attention to your pipes. Set your heat no lower than 55 degrees. The temperature inside the walls where water pipes are located is colder than the living spaces. This will help to prevent frozen pipes.
  • When the weather will be very cold, let water drip from hot and cold faucets overnight.
  • Try keeping cabinet doors open to let warmer air circulate around your sink pipes. If you open the cabinet doors, remove anything hazardous to children, like household cleaners.
  • For exposed pipes in your attic, basement, or crawlspaces, add extra insulation. Frozen pipes can be a pain, and busted pipes can cause TONS of damage to your home.

frozen-pipe winter home maintenance

Water on the floor –

  • Use mats in entryways of the home, especially if you have hardwood floors. The water that is tracked in can easily damage your flooring. On tile, LVT or laminate, it can cause a slippery surface which could lead to falls, which is never good.
  • Set up an area for wet shoes to avoid tracking it throughout the house as well.

Hot & Cold:

AC/Furnace Maintenance –

  • Have your furnace or boiler checked at least once a year. We recommend this before the winter begins in case you need a replacement.
  • Clean or replace the furnace filter on forced hot air systems or have your furnace cleaned. Do this before winter as well.
  • Maintain your wood-burning stove.
  • When using high-efficiency heating systems, make sure that PVC vent pipes are free of any debris.

buy windows cincinnati louisville builders surplus Silverline by Andersen

Energy Efficient Windows –

Poorly insulated or old windows can cause money to go literally flying through the cracks.

  • Check caulking around windows
  • Decide if you need replacement windows
  • Check to see if you need new weatherstripping
  • Make sure the walls around windows are sealed. If not, fix them.

caulking-windows winter home maintenance

Drafty Doors –

Your door can play a large part in letting in cold air, and letting heat out. Make sure that you check the things listed below as part of your winter home maintenance checklist every year.

  • Check to see if there are gaps around your doors
  • Check non-functional weatherstripping
  • See if you would benefit from a storm door for extra protection.
  • Open doors to unoccupied rooms to keep an even temperature throughout the house.
  • A new door also gives a great return on investment, so if you do need a new front door, don’t consider it a loss, but a win. You’ll save money on heating and cooling bills and give your home a facelift!

Home Value: 5 Easy Ways to Increase It

What’s going on, everyone? I do hope you’re well and enjoying the much-anticipated warm weather. Where it seemed like it was a rather mild winter, it felt like ages to me.  If you’re a summer baby like yours truly, then you literally countdown the days until April or May, where you can enjoy a nice drive with the windows down and music up. Plus, now that it’s warm, we can all start working on the most important asset we have — our home. In this blog post, I’ll discuss five ways to easily increase home value. May the warmth inspire and spark creativity, y’all. Let’s begin!

The Best Ways To Increase Home Value

Focus on the Entry Door

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that curb appeal is a monstrous factor when it comes to home value. The front door simply further emphasizes this incredibly significant factor. Essentially, it pulls the eye in and acts as a main focal point to the entire house. Think about it, when you have guests over, what is the first course of action? Walking through the front door. So, naturally, that’s what the eye is going to be attracted to.     home value   Don’t be afraid to get a little quirky when it comes to your front door, either. Want to make it a crazy-cool color? Do it. Want to splash some sort of design on it? Go ahead. I encourage you to make it your own and let it standout. Because, honestly, it’s going to anyway.   home value

Upgrade the Kitchen

Now, listen, I know those three words can seem a bit vague, and even once it’s broken down, it can still be a bit overwhelming. So for all intensive purposes, I’ll just name two components of a kitchen. Also note that your kitchen is arguably (but who would argue) the most important room in the entire house. Because of this, simply renovating a few things will no doubt increase home value. For sure. Cabinets: You may be surprised to know that simply switching out the cabinets in your kitchen will do wonders as far as aesthetics. Maybe you’re tired of the type of cabinet and color, or you’re like me and get antsy when you’ve staring at the same scenery for far too long. I encourage you to take a good, hard look at your cabinets and see if you’d like to make some changes. Remix it up. home value   Countertops: In my opinion, countertops can make or break a kitchen’s overall look. With this in mind, if you’ve been preparing your meals over, say, formica countertops then I think you’d really enjoy a granite or quartz countertops. They’re both sleek, modern-looking, and the characteristics for both are far more superior — in strength, durability, accident-resistance, and maintenance.   home value

Beautify your Bathroom

Kitchens and baths, y’all, that’s where it’s at for value’s sake. These rooms allow a person to express themselves artistically and make a style their own. Like I mentioned before, don’t be afraid to go above and beyond. After all, IT IS your home. Do what you will. However, if you’re going to be selling in the near future, keep the style one that will appeal to a broad range of buyers. Vanities: A bathroom doesn’t call for as much space as a kitchen does, sure, but I’d be lying if I said that these pieces aren’t essential to your bathroom design. Take the same advice I gave you about your kitchen cabinetry and recreate a different design — use interesting colors, textures, and styles and make things harmoniously blend. home value Vanity tops: Much like your kitchen countertops, a vanity top can make or break the design. Now, if it were me, I’d take a look at our cultured marble tops, in addition to our large selection of vanity tops. We truly have some beautiful colors that will blend nicely with any design. I promise you.

Watch your Windows

Windows may seem like a small aspect in home design, but I’m telling you, replacing the old with the new will greatly increase your home value. At Builders Surplus, we carry Silverline by Andersen windows, and they’re true beauties. Available in different designs and styles, these babies will quite literally make each room brighter.   home value   Another thing I kinda like about windows is that they’re two sides of the same coin. We talked about the importance of curb appeal before, and windows sort of add to that enhanced focus, but they’re also very endearing on the inside, as well.   Plus, if you’re kinda crafty, you can enrich the look and put a beautiful set of moulding around each window, achieving that ‘craftsmen’ style perfectly. Just a little food for thought if you want to really increase home value.     home value

Spruce Up the Outside

This probably goes without saying, but a well-maintained, neat, and even colorful yard is going to get some looks. If you want to increase home value, this is definitely an area I’d focus on. Curb appeal, remember? If your grass is as green as a golf course, there’s a nice blend of trees, flowers, and bushes — all neatly clipped — and everything looks proper and perfect, don’t be surprised to see a car come to a slow crawl, peeking in.   home value     Having a yard that’s pleasing to the eye is going to get you those seriously-this-just-went-on-the-market kind of offers, and who doesn’t want to be in that driver’s seat, no pun intended. Just don’t make it TOO busy, you know what I mean. Keep it nice. Keep it neat. Keep it complete.   home value     I hope these five things gave you a bit of insight and, hopefully, some inspiration to make some renovations to increase home value. Change isn’t all bad, people! Remember that, and keep on enjoying this weather! Hope to see y’all in here soon, but until then be safe and stay blessed!

Sliding Barn Doors For EVERY Style

So many people think that sliding barn doors only work with the rustic look. That they’re something that would come out of say, a barn. But that simply is not the case! As a company that sells doors and sliding barn door hardware, we’ve seen a ton of combinations! We’re here to show you that sliding barn doors come in many shapes and sizes, in every style that’s out there! No matter what your flavor is, you can incorporate this hot trend into your home with ease.

Spectrum of Style with Sliding Barn Doors

Rustic:

This one is what most people expect from sliding barn doors. The rustic look works very well with an unfinished knotted pine door or reclaimed wood put together. We love the rustic look, and the unfinished doors work perfectly because you can stain them however you like to get the look just right for your home. Pair it with black hardware for the best look.

French Country:

To get the french country look with your sliding barn doors, opt for a painted finish. Half glass achieves this look very well, as shown below. French country is about simplicity, fresh, clean colors, and natural materials, like wood. Black hardware would also work best with this style of sliding barn door.

Contemporary:

Contemporary style is all about pushing the boundaries. Mixing materials and media in your decor is what it’s all about. Because of that, you can get a little bit funkier in your door choice! I love this rough, live edge wood slab that they used in the door below. It is definitely a statement piece. You can opt for chrome or black hardware for a contemporary sliding barn door.

Traditional:

Traditional sliding barn doors can be more simple. A full view french door will work perfectly for a traditional look. You can paint it, stain it, or leave it natural, the choice is up to you! Chrome or black hardware would be appropriate for a traditional sliding barn door.

Modern:

Modern sliding barn doors need to be sleek. The white five panel door below is a perfect choice, complimented by chrome sliding barn door hardware. You can also go with a glass door with no grids. This is a very clean look, with crisp lines and a minimalistic vibe.

Eclectic:

Eclectic style is one of my favorites. You can use unique doors, fun patterns or bright colors (or possibly even a combination of the three!) and create a space that is perfectly you. Eclectic style always seems to brighten my day. For eclectic sliding barn doors, I would recommend painting your doors bright colors, or finding something very unexpected to use in place of a door! Black or chrome hardware can be used to pull off the eclectic look with sliding barn doors.

Old World:

This style has to be my favorite. It is so reminiscent of centuries past that it just makes me nostalgic for petticoats and powdered wigs. Maybe Italian sculptors. It probably depends on the door. Look for the oldest door possible, with as much architectural detail as you can find. Clean the dirt off, but don’t worry about the rust or freshening up the paint. That’s where the charm lies! Black hardware is probably the best choice for old world sliding barn doors.

Fiberglass Doors: The Pros and Cons

Doors are the gateway, the essential transition from room to room, and the main passageway to your home. Fortunately for homeowners, there are options to choose from, like styles and designs. And then there’s the material, fiberglass doors, wood doors, and metal doors. In this post, I’d like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of installing a fiberglass door. Like anything else, there are always two sides to a choice, and before you make one, it’s best to get a good handle of the product in its entirety. Let’s get started.
fiberglass doors

The Pros of Fiberglass Doors

fiberglass doors
Durability: Choosing fiberglass as a door material is beneficial in a number of ways, the best being that it is extremely stable. Capable of resisting through harsh, persistent weather, dents, scratches, and impervious to rust and rot, elements that can and will completely destroy wood and steel. This elemental and weatherproof resistance just adds to the longevity of the door, making it much more valuable.
fiberglass doors
Versatility: Another advantage of fiberglass doors is the ability to make it your own. Now, if you’re like me, you tend to grow tiresome of the same look, same color. With a fiberglass door, a fresh look can be as simple as applying a couple coats of paint. The material is such that you can stain or paint it to the color of your choice.
fiberglass doors
Insulation/Energy Efficiency: According to the Department of Energy, fiberglass doors have higher R-values than other doors, meaning they act as an excellent insulator, keeping your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. In a time where energy costs are literally through the roof, using energy efficiently like this makes a huge difference to the environment AND those pesky household utility bills.
fiberglass doors
Security: Since the material is all but unbreakable, deterioration isn’t possible. Additionally, when this door is installed and fastened, the screw-holding power is amplified. In other wise, if a tornado were to come through *knocks on wood* don’t be surprised if your entry door still stands. Also, most of these doors are paired with highly secure locking mechanisms. No thievery allowed.

FiberglassDoors

The Cons of Fiberglass Doors

money
Price: No question, this is the biggest drawback. Compared to other types of doors, this is generally the priciest, but you do get what you pay for. The above qualities create value for a door, so if you want something durable, fashionable, and crazy secure, this is the option for you. Overall, it will pay for itself, given its insulation properties and energy-efficient ways. Just throwing some facts out there.
fiberglass doors
Fitting/Standard Size: If you have an older home then it could be difficult to find one of these doors to fit the gap. Because it’s not logical, profit wise, for manufacturers to make these doors in odd sizes, they simply come in their standard size.
fiberglass doors
Still-Life: A wooden door ages, right, so down the road the appearance takes on the “distressed” look, which is a style that many have fell in love with. You’ll get no aging when it comes to fiberglass. It is, essentially, a still-life. The Dorian Gray of doors, if you will. Depending on the way you look at it, this can be a plus or a minus. All a matter of perspective.

Simple Design Choices to Sell Your Home Quicker

design choices If you’re looking to sell your home, odds are you’re already feeling a bit overwhelmed. Figures roll around your head, you start to look at your home a little more closely, needing to repair this, needing to repair that. In all, putting your house on your market can (and should) give you a bit of perspective. I am, of course, referencing the flip-the-script mentality, a buyer’s perspective. It can be difficult using empathy and tying up the laces of someone else’s shoes, but all in all, you need not worry. Here are some design choices to make sure you sell your home as quick as possible and for more money. Check it out.

Bathroom Design Choices

design choices     Among the many areas in a household, an elegant bathroom can absolutely sway an opinion. Let’s break into that buyer’s perspective and use a bit of imagination. You’re touring a gorgeous home with a beautiful kitchen, elegant flooring, unique designs, nice color detail, and then you get to the bathroom, and that happy expression slides off your face instantly. Unappealing bathrooms makes a house less attractive because a buyer has to weigh in the cost and time of a remodel. Instantly. And they haven’t even closed on the house yet. It’s just one of those things. design choices   Tile-Shop-Ad On the other hand, a bathroom design such as the one above boosts you home’s value drastically. According to Zillow, a “bathroom remodel of this type results in a $1.71 increase in home value for every $1.00 spent on the product.” See what I mean? The renovation can simply be done by adding a new bathroom sink and fixture, getting rid of the fiberglass shower and installing a brilliant shower tile. Vanities, light fixtures, and toilets are other simple additions that will turn a once “just-okay” bathroom into beautifully designed, welcoming-to-the-eye, one-of-a-kind bathroom. At Builders Surplus, we have beautiful in-stock vanities, design-oriented tile, and even freestanding tubs that are sure to awe to anyone!

Exterior Design Choices

design choices

Blue house exterior with yellow door, new windows, flowers, plants, and covered porch area.

I’ve written about it before, and I’ll write about it again – curb appeal is significant.  Whether a home buyer pairs with a realtor or decides to go the old fashioned way by scoping the neighborhoods, they are at some point in time going to pull up to the front of the house. Appearance is everything in this regard, and it’s important to realize this relatively early, so you can get started on a nice design. The options are endless. My opinion? It’s the safest best if you want to do something simple and easy. Focus on the front door. US news reports that if you do something as simple as painting or replacing, it can bring the highest return of any other project – whomping 96%!  The priority here is to heighten the aesthetics to your exterior. Make it new, make it fresh, and make it shine. design choices And if you’re looking for a company to meet those kind of demands, look no further but to Andersen doors. We carry them here at Builders Surplus, and trust us, they provide the best products – hands down. If that doesn’t suit your fancy, and you’d like to go with something a little more elaborate, we have some really outstanding French patio doors and an absolutely stunning iron door for an excellent price! See for yourself here.

Kitchen Design Choices

design choices   Wellborn-Shop-Ad Ah, the kitchen. The most prominent place in the house, so it’s easy to understand that there’s a certain care, a certain emphasis that should be placed on this space. Now, in terms of this post, I’m definitely not saying you need to completely destroy the kitchen and start from scratch. No, that’s overdoing it a little bit. We’re going with the simple take on things, remember. Updating certain aspects of your kitchen can go a long way. In fact, according to Zillow, a minor kitchen remodel could recoup 83.1% of your costs. An excellent number for your investment. The Zillow article also states that anything outdated can immediately turn buyer’s off. Luckily, there are a few adjustments you can make that can lead to a big payoff. design choices Something as simple as changing your kitchen cabinet hardware can make the style more relevant and intriguing. Another is switching your cabinets to improve design. Here at Builders Surplus, we have these simple design choices readily available. We carry awesome cabinet hardware from well-known brands like Top Knobs, Jeffrey Alexander, and Amerock! Looking for cabinets? Unique Interior Doors to Upgrade Your Home, Affordably!

Today, we’re going to dig a little deeper about an interior design feature that is oftentimes overlooked. But I’m here to tell you, it shouldn’t be. Now, you may be scratching your temple, asking me, “why or how?” The answer is nearly quite obvious when you think about in a different perspective. So here it is. Are you ready? Okay. Picture the place you live in at the moment. The living room, dining area, bathrooms, even closets. Now, picture it again, but this time without any interior doors. Weird, right? Something is obviously wrong with that visual. Everything is eerily open, and your mind wants/needs to put something there for a multitude of reasons.

One of the main job of any door is that it gives people that necessary sense of privacy. After all, it’s your home, and you should live comfortably in the space you’ve created for you and yours. With that said, and the image of a doorless house held tight in the confines of your mind, wouldn’t you want to fill that space with something that just doesn’t act as a barrier, but that visually compliments your interior design in its entirety? Yes! You’ve seen it for yourself, the importance of an interior door. So in turn, their design should reflect the significance. And, boy, let me tell you. These transitional elements can do wonders for the look and feel of a home. It’s a simple upgrade that absolutely should not go overlooked.

Traditional Interior Doors

interior doors

Pictured above is a standard, six-panel interior door. This is the more traditional approach, most commonly found in newly-built homes. Builders install these doors due to its standard look, and the mere fact that they are the most common type of interior door around. Now, I’m not knocking this design at all! There’s a legitimate reason for its simple design. It’s solid core, for example, is mainly for sound control. But I’m here to tell you that thinking outside of the box (in this case 6 of them) can make for one heck of an upgrade, one you surely won’t regret. All for the same price of a standard door. So, you must ask yourself why pay for an ordinary something when, for the same price, you can plant that exclamation point and make a statement!  So let’s look at some other designs and see what best suits you and your home, shall we?

Rustic Interior Doors

interior doors
Rustic interior doors are so suitable for the country-style home. I mean, look at them. I think it’s the aged look that really sets this style apart from the others, and it’s wondrous what a stain color can do to knotty pine wood. My favorite of these three above, is most likely the last one here. It’s that Old Hickory stain accompanied by the crisp-white casing and door trim that reveals that look of The Old World. Mesmerizing. Affordability: Like I said, this look is all about the kind of wood your door is made of. Good thing for you, it’s not expensive at all! You can get a Knotty Pine Interior Door from us right now for only $99.99. That, along with a pint of stain, and there you have it! The look of the Old, in all of its glorified elegance.

Modern Interior Doors

interior doors

interior doors

Talk about pure sophistication. Modern interior doors ooze of elaborate design. This interior door style epitomizes the statement I made before about a door being able to meet an entire room’s design. Take a good look at the picture above and the material of the trim. Metal. Another modern design element that just ties the door and the room together. Brilliant. Complexly brilliant. Also, just because a door doesn’t look ultra-modern, doesn’t mean you can’t exemplify that look. The first two pictures epitomize that statement. Affordability: Classic white paint with a modern design is an easy and extremely inexpensive look to pull off. You can knock an entire floor out with some Surplus Doors and a couple gallons of paint. Make your weekend project simple, in effort and in savings.

I urge you to go against the grain when it comes to interior design. Don’t settle for things to “just be okay,” and instead dare to defy the norm and accentuate your house the way you want to! As I’ve explained, something that is usually glanced at has the potential to become a beautiful element throughout your entire house. If you were pleased with some of the designs you saw here, please feel free to take a look at what we have at Builders Surplus! You can do so here.

How To: DIY Desk From A Rustic Door

*If you don’t see the video above, refresh your browser. For additional steps in the finishing process, read the blog below!

Hi Everyone! This is Allie at Builders Surplus with another how-to for you. Today, we’re going to be creating a DIY desk from a door and a few other materials. This is a pretty simple project and I’m excited to share it with you. This door that I’m using is a knotted pine rustic door. We carry this door in stock all year round. I had to pre stain the door and posts, because you need 72 hours to let it dry. I used a really nice Minwax stain called ‘Red Mahogany’. I used a sponge on the door and a brush on the posts. The crevices were harder to get into with the sponge, so the brushed worked well for me. It’s up to you, whatever you think will work best. After letting the stain dry, we can get started on assembling our new DIY Desk!

DIY Desk (or Table) Materials

Here are the materials that you will need for your DIY Desk:

  • Wood Door of Choice ( We used Knotted Pine Interior Door)
  • Wooden Posts for Legs (We used some we carry in store, you can find them in most home improvement stores)
  • Stain of Choice (We Used Minwax Red Mahogany)
  • Brush & Sponge
  • Hammer
  • 2 Wooden Dowels (We used 3/8 dowels)
  • Drill & Screws
  • Spade Bit
  • Boring Bit
  • Hand Saw

Step 1: Stain

Stain your door on one or both sides, as well as your posts on all sides. Let sit for 72 hours until completely dry.

Shop Products at Builders Surplus

Step 2: Position Legs

Lay your door, stain side up (if you didn’t stain both sides) on a table, with half of it coming off the edge. Sit your post underneath your door where a leg would go and position it appropriately. Then take your tape measure and measure from the edge of the door to the center of where your post is positioned, on both sides of the post. We are going to mark the spot where your two measurements will meet. This is where you are going to pre drill. Go ahead and do the same thing for the other post on that end of the door.

Step 3: Pre-drill Holes

Take your drill and your spade bit and pre-drill your holes for your dowels and screw. You do not want to go all the way through the door! You want to go about half way. That is why I marked my bit with a piece of tape. I would recommend you do so if you’re not very familiar with a drill. You’re then going change your spade bit for your boring bit. You’ll take the post and make sure it is aligned perfectly underneath. You will take the boring bit and pre-drill for your screw. This can go all the way through the door and into the post. This is the hole that the screw will go through to connect the legs to the door for your DIY desk. Repeat this step on the other leg on this side of the door.

Other-Ideas

Other ideas for your door desk or table

Step 4: Connect Your Legs

Now that you have your legs aligned and your holes pre-drilled, you will take your screw and connect the door to the post legs. You’re then going to take your wooden dowel (3/8 dowel in our case) and sit it into the hole. Take a pen or marker and mark where the spot where the dowel comes out of the hole. Take your hand saw and saw the dowel until it is cut to size. You can then put some glue in the hole, or simply place the dowel in the hole. Take your  brush or sponge with a tiny bit of stain, and stain over top of the dowel to make it the same color as your desk. Repeat this step for the other leg on this end of the door.

Shop Products at Builders Surplus

Step 5: Repeat Steps On Other Sides

Now that two of your legs are completed, you will need to turn the desk around to be able to work on the other side. You will repeat the above steps for those two legs as well.

Step 6: Finishing it off

After completing the above steps, you could be finished. It depends on how much stability you need for your DIY desk or table. After completing the video, we went through two additional steps because of the space & equipment that this desk was going to be used for.
The first thing we did was cut down the legs just a tad. We were using this as on office desk, and the person who would be sitting in it did not have a chair that would extend to this height.
The second thing we did was to add some extra support in the form of L brackets & a wooden “skirt” on the back of the desk. The L brackets attach to the desk & leg at the same time, making it more sturdy. We then took a spare piece of oak wood that we had in the warehouse and attached it on top of the back two legs below the door. This gave us all the stability we needed to put the 2 large desktop computers & filing shelves on it that needed to be in this office.
While you don’t need glass to make this a desk or table, we also decided to add a large piece of tempered glass to the top of our desk. This really took the piece from a fairly inexpensive DIY desk to a slightly more expensive desk. Tempered glass in this size is not the cheapest, but again, it all depends on what your will be using it for and your personal preference. Check out pictures of our finished desk below!

How-To Build a Rustic Door Shelf

DIY Rustic Door Shelf Tutorial

Hi everybody! Today we are going to do a really awesome how-to. I’m going to teach you how to take an old door and turn it into a leaning door shelf. This is a project that most of you can do on your own, but if you aren’t comfortable with using a circular saw, find someone who is familiar with it that can help you out on that step. The rustic and vintage styles are very popular right now. This is mainly because of the sense of warmth and comfort that these pieces bring to our homes. The feeling of history that comes with a piece like this is absolutely priceless. Up-cycling is another great trend that no only helps to save money, but helps our environment as well. Let’s get started!

The door I used for our door shelf comes out of out of our surplus selection. The great thing about our surplus doors is that you never know what you’re gonna find! We’ve got some really great interior and exterior doors out there and I happened to come across this beauty. It is an old 5 panel, solid wood door with an imperfect finish on it. It is perfect for this project, so I’m excited to share it with you!

Tools You’ll Need for Your Door Shelf:

Here are the tools that we’re going to need today. We have a circular saw, we’ve got some small screws, 2 picture hanging kits, some decorative chain, a nice decorative door knob that I got from Hobby Lobby, some clamps, a straight edge, and a level. We also need our safety glasses and ear plugs for when we’re using the circular saw. Safety First! You will also need a drill, a hammer and a chisel.

  • 5 Panel Wood Door
  • Circular Saw
  • Safety Glasses & Ear Plugs
  • Clamps
  • Straight Edge
  • Level
  • 2 Picture Hanging Kits (You Can Use Eye Hooks As Well, If So You Will Need 10)
  • Decorative Chain
  • Decorative Door Knob
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Small Screws

Step 1:

Decide Where To Put Your Door Shelf and Take Measurements

First, you are going to take a look at your door and determine where you want it to be in your home and how far you’ll want it to lean. Because you will be using the panels of the door as shelves, you need to realize that the top 2 shelves will need to be cut, or they will hit the wall, making it impossible for them to lay flat. You will need to measure the space from the wall to the door on the top 2 panels (maybe 3 depending on how your shelf is leaning). For me, my top shelf was 3″ from the wall, and my second shelf was 6″ from the wall. The rest of my panels were fine at the size that they were.

Step 2:

Cut 3 Sides of Each Panel in the “Lip” Area With Circular Saw

The next step in our Door Shelf project is to cut out these panels on the back side of the door. Once you have decided which side you would like to be facing out in your home, find a table and flip the door with the back side facing up. This is where you are going to need your circular saw. Again, if you are not familiar with a circular saw, find someone who is to help you out. Make sure you are wearing your eye and ear wear when using the circular saw. We are then going to measure from the blade to the edge of the saw. For me, that is 5 3/4″. I will then place the saw on the spot that I’ll be cutting, and will take a measuring tape and measure 5 3/4″ from my cutting area. I then mark that spot with a straight edge and 2 clamps. This area is called “the fence”. This will ensure that I get a straight cut, as the circular saw will move along “the fence” while I’m making my cuts.

Panel doors such as this will have a “lip” area around the panels. This is to hold the panels in place, as they are not glued or secured in. They simply sit in slots inside on the wooden “lip” surrounding the panel area. Because of this, we will only need to cut out 3 sides of the panel, because once your 3 sides are gone, you will be able to pop and slide the panels out. Be very careful when cutting, but if you happen to go a little too far on your cuts, it is not the end of the world. The beauty of projects like these are that the imperfections make them beautiful. You will cut the bottom lip and the left and right side of each panel “lip” on all 5 door panels.

Step 3:

Chisel Out The “Lips” and Pop Out The Panels

Now that your 3 lip sides are cut, you will need to chisel them out completely  to make sure your panel can come out as easily as possible. Take your chisel and place the flat side up against the door, not the panel area. Take your hammer and get it down to the bottom of the “lip” wood, and then pry any remaining pieces out. After you’ve done the sides, make sure you get in the corners and tap those out as well. Repeat that process for the remaining panels.

Step 4:

Drill Holes for Your Chain & Pre-Drill Screw Holes For Your Door Shelf

*In my project, I had one panel break in half that mysteriously was the perfect size for my top 2 panels (step 1) of my door shelf, 3″ and 6″. Because of this, I did not have to cut any panels to fit the measurements in step 1. I doubt you will have the same luck, so you will need to take your saw and cut one of your panels to fit those measurements, using the same procedures in step 2.
We are now going to drill our holes to secure the shelves. First, you’re going to take a 3/8 bit and drill holes in the top left and right corner of each panel. On the opposite side of your panel, take a 1/8 bit and drill a hole about 1/2 inch from the edge of the panel in the center. Your final holes should be in a triangle shape on your panel.

Step 5:

Connecting your panels to your door

Your door should still be face down on a table, which is how it should remain. Take your first panel with the side with your single 1/8 hole in the center, and place it in on the ledge, straight up, on your door. You should then take a screw and LIGHTLY drill it into the center hole you predrilled to secure it to the door. This screw should NOT be tight. This is because our self is leaning. If you screw it in tightly at a 90 degree angle, your shelves will not be level to the floor. After you have lightly screwed your shelf in place, you will need to get out your decorative chain. Take one end of the chain and thread it through the first hole, going from the top of the shelf to the bottom, then across the bottom and up through the hole on the other side. Take your chain up to the corner of the opened panel area so estimate how much chain you will need for each shelf. You will not know exactly where to secure the chain, because again the door shelf is leaning. Cut your chain based on the amount you assume you will need.
You will then take you mirror hooks (or eye hooks). Drill in your left mirror hook and connect the chain to the loop. You will go ahead and screw in the right mirror hook, but do not connect your chain to it. You will need to adjust these chains when your shelf is straight up. Repeat this step on all remaining panels.

Step 6:

Connecting Your Chain & Finishing Your Shelf

After all of your shelves are lightly secured and have chain threaded & mirror hooks attached, you will carefully stand your shelf up and lean it as it will be in your home. Now that you can see where you need your selves to sit in order to be level, take the side of your chain that you did not connect, and connect it in the appropriate place to your remaining mirror hook. Repeat for the remaining panels.

Step 7:

Adding Decorative Accents

The decorative accent I chose to use for my door shelf was a vintage style door knob. It had 2 holes in it already, so I simply drilled it to the spot where a door knob would be, one screw in the top and one in the bottom. You now have a beautiful, original, rustic or vintage piece that will work wonderfully as a shelf! This is a great conversation piece and the pride that you have in building it will shine through in the finished product. You will want to make sure you test each shelf before placing really heavy items on it, but it is a strong shelf and will work for virtually anything you want to put on it.
