Your Guide to Waterproof Flooring!

Introduction to Waterproof Flooring

In today’s world, homeowners are constantly seeking ways to improve the functionality and durability of their living spaces while maintaining a stylish and modern aesthetic. One of the most significant aspects to consider when designing or remodeling a home is the flooring. With a variety of options available, waterproof flooring has emerged as an increasingly popular choice for many households. This type of flooring provides numerous benefits, including resistance to water damage, easy maintenance, and durability in high-traffic areas. Whether you’re on a tight budget, have young children or pets, or simply want a long-lasting and low-maintenance flooring solution, waterproof flooring is an ideal choice. In this blog post, we will explore the two main waterproof flooring options – luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate – and help you understand their unique features, histories, and benefits. By the end of this post, you will have the knowledge needed to make an informed decision about the best waterproof flooring solution for your home.

Waterproof your floor

Two Main Waterproof Flooring Options

When it comes to selecting waterproof flooring, there are two primary options that cater to different preferences and requirements. Understanding the unique features and benefits of each option will help you make the best choice for your home.

a. Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVT or LVP)

Luxury Vinyl Flooring, also known as Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) or Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), is a highly versatile and durable flooring option made from multiple layers of PVC vinyl. LVT and LVP are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural materials, such as hardwood or stone, while providing the added benefits of water resistance, easy installation, and low maintenance. Luxury vinyl flooring is ideal for homeowners who want the look and feel of natural materials without the high cost or susceptibility to water damage.

b. Waterproof Laminate

Waterproof laminate is an innovative flooring option that offers the benefits of traditional laminate flooring while incorporating enhanced water resistance. Unlike standard laminate flooring, which is only water-resistant, waterproof laminate features a surface that is impervious to water, making it suitable for areas prone to spills or moisture. However, it is important to note that only the surface of waterproof laminate is waterproof, and water damage can still occur if moisture seeps into the cracks or underneath the flooring. Waterproof laminate is a good option for those seeking an affordable, stylish, and moderately water-resistant flooring solution.

By comparing the features and benefits of luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate, you can determine the best waterproof flooring option for your specific needs and preferences.

Water proof Laminate

WATERPROOF LAMINATE

Comparing Laminate and Luxury Vinyl Flooring

When choosing between laminate and luxury vinyl flooring, it’s essential to understand their differences in terms of composition, durability, water resistance, and other factors. By examining these differences, you can make an informed decision about the best waterproof flooring solution for your home.

a. Material Composition

Laminate flooring is composed of multiple layers, with its primary layer (the core) made of high-density fiberboard. This provides laminate flooring with rigidity and strength. On the other hand, luxury vinyl flooring is made primarily of PVC vinyl, which makes it dimensionally stable and flexible. Learn more about laminate vs. luxury vinyl flooring in our blog post.

b. Water Resistance

While waterproof laminate has a water-resistant surface, only the surface is waterproof. If water penetrates the cracks or seeps underneath the flooring, damage can occur. Luxury vinyl flooring, in contrast, is entirely waterproof, making it a more suitable option for areas prone to moisture or spills. Discover more about waterproof flooring options on our blog.

c. Durability and Maintenance

Both laminate and luxury vinyl flooring are durable and low-maintenance options. However, luxury vinyl flooring is generally more resistant to dents, scratches, and fading caused by sunlight exposure, making it a more robust choice for high-traffic areas and households with children or pets. Read our blog post on the durability of luxury vinyl flooring for more information.

d. Appearance and Cost

Laminate flooring can closely mimic the appearance of real hardwood floors or slate at a lower cost, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners. Luxury vinyl flooring also offers a wide range of design options that closely resemble natural materials, often at a competitive price point. Explore our blog on affordable flooring options for more insights.

e. Environmental and Health Factors

Laminate flooring is considered an environmentally friendly choice due to its composition, which often includes recycled materials. Additionally, some laminate flooring options are resistant to chemicals and burns, providing added safety benefits. Luxury vinyl flooring, on the other hand, offers built-in soundproofing and often doesn’t contain harmful chemicals that can impact indoor air quality. Check out our blog post on eco-friendly flooring choices for more information.

By comparing laminate and luxury vinyl flooring across these key factors, you can make a well-informed decision about the best waterproof flooring option to suit your specific needs, budget, and design preferences.

5 Renovation Mistakes You Cannot Afford To Make

Anyone who has watched HGTV has seen plenty of renovation mistakes. Any renovation is an undertaking–ask every contractor and every homeowner that has been part of a remodel.  From the accidents that can occur to the ever-growing budget, taking on a reno project requires time, dedication, sweat, and patience.  From our experts to you, we have come up with the list of five renovation mistakes you cannot afford to make!
Home Renovation Free Download Banner

Low-Balling the Budget

Drywall Renovation Mistakes
Surprises are going to happen. Sometimes they are good: like finding original hardwood floors underneath the carpet in pristine condition. Sometimes they are horrifying: like finding asbestos in your home’s walls. While installing backsplash, you might damage the wall and have to replace some of the drywall. Peeking inside the drywall, you could find electrical issues. Then, the next thing you know, you’re dealing with more than just installing backsplash. We suggest setting aside 15% of the total project cost (potentially more for older homes) for unexpected expenses. This is your safety net in the event that unforeseen issues occur. This will give you peace of mind knowing that you won’t break the bank at the first sign of the unexpected.

Floor Drains: the Laundry Room Essential

Laundry Room Drain Mistake
This is one of the renovation mistakes that you may not consider. A laundry room drain is required by code in most areas, but some people still omit it. If there is ever a break in your washing machine hose, you’ll flood your house. A floor drain directs the water into your home’s main drain system. And please, do not try a DIY installation. This can turn into another one of our renovation mistakes.  You will absolutely need a professional plumber, but again, you’ll have peace of mind, as flood insurance is not covered by most basic homeowner’s insurance plans.

Granite, Granite, Granite

Kitchen Design Trends
Of course, it is popular, but granite isn’t the only option for the kitchen.  Renovators could choose a different material for the countertops that can save tons of money in the kitchen!  Our non-granite picks: butcher block, plate steel, or a nice laminate for those who don’t necessarily have the budget for premium marble or granite. Explore the options that will work best for your family to avoid regret down the road. Don’t break your budget trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Hidden Gems

Tile Floor Remodel
Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.  A bathroom membrane system (which goes under tile) prevents popping and cracking, and keeps water from getting into the substructure. Think about it: If you’re spending $15,000 on a bathroom, spend an extra $1,000 to ensure you’ll never have a mold problem. This is one of those renovation mistakes that could end up costing big bucks down the line.

Floored: Ultimate Renovation Mistakes

Beautiful Hallway
Most contractors typically buy 20% extra flooring since it is prone to cuts and breakage during installation. There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to find an exact match if you need to order more during a long remodeling project.  Most retailers often let you return unopened boxes for a refund, so you shouldn’t get stuck with too much material.  It’s also nice to have extra in case of damage down the road. If you suffer and water damage (especially in the kitchen) or a pet scratches deeply or has an accident that stains, you’ll be glad you did.

Storm Doors: Why Would I Need One?

Storm Doors

In this post, let’s dive into what can be a very important, highly significant feature that should accompany your main, exterior doors. Storm doors are relatively inexpensive given their purpose and can actually enhance the look of your front door, like the last finishing touch to an already outstanding piece of work. We’ll talk about who needs them and why people might just want them. Then, we’ll take a glance at Andersen’s storm doors, some of their installation options, and where you can find them. Let’s get started, shall we?

Storm Doors

Storm Doors

The Purpose of Storm Doors

Maintenance: Think of a storm door as a sort of force field, if you will, an added component of protection from the most obvious act of nature – storms. However, the protection isn’t exactly limited to those raging moments of thunder, lightning, and rain. The summer sun can enact just as much damage, if not more. In essence, harsh weather over a period of time can deteriorate your main entry door, leaving a grimace instead of an approving nod in terms of curb appeal.

Protection/Security: The security doesn’t just stop there, though; it also protects what’s inside of your main door. It’s like a lock within a lock, making theft or any other threat that much more difficult to perform. A storm door also allows you to visibly see who’s on your front porch before even letting them in if you don’t have a peephole. It’s just one more barrier to prevent anything from happening, ensuring the safety of you, your loved ones, and your possessions.

Money-saver: We all strike at the opportunity of saving a bit of cash, right? Installing a storm door is your primetime ticket for doing just that. Front doors are one of the primary places for air leakage in homes. A storm door will hide the cracks and small airways, making it plenty more difficult to seep through, which means a lower utility bill. See, these doors provide an extra pocket of insulation, so you can have more money in yours.

Simplicity: Installation for these bad boys are quick and easy. It doesn’t matter which frame your house was built in (brick, vinyl, stucco, wood), there is a storm door option for everyone.

Storm Doors

Who Wants a Storm Door?

That’s another great thing about storms doors – they’re for everyone. Now, I will say that there are some homeowners who actually need one instead of merely wanting one.

Given what I wrote about maintenance, you can see where I’m coming from in terms of geological location and an area’s weather patterns, OR it could be as simple as where the sun hangs out during the hottest time of day (3 P.M. to 5 P.M.). For example, if one lives in the Midwest where tornadoes are more prevalent than trees, a storm door is probably a necessity. Or one might live in Tucson, AZ, where a step outside means an instant puddle of sweat in the summer time. In places like these, the Sun means business, and it has zero mercy with anything let alone a front door.

So, if it just so happen that the Sun’s main hangout spot around 4 or so is directly in line with your front porch, well, happy roasting. But then there’s the other side of the equation, the homeowners who simply like the elegant look and idea of a storm door that blends, both in color and functionality, with their front door. There’s a trait, a characteristic that’s ideal to every homeowner. It’s just a matter of perspective.

Andersen Storm Doors and Options

Storm Doors by Andersen are simply the best in the business. With top quality craftsmanship and a plethora of styles, this company has been grabbing the attention from homeowners, contractors, and others in the home renovation business since Andersen’s inception in 1903. Yeah, that’s well over a century of purely satisfied customers, and the products they dish out are just as long-lasting.
Installation: Andersen’s latest storm door design features what is called a Rapid Install system. According to the company, “this process makes installation easy by eliminating the need to cut and reducing the number of tools and assembly time required.” So, there are three installation options: Rapid 1 Install, Rapid 2 Install, and Standard Installation. In that order, the amount of time taken, tools necessary to complete the job, and the amount of cuts increases. Each option ranging from about one hour to around three for the installation time.
Color/Styles: FullView Doors, Full-Lite Doors, 3/4 Lite Doors, and 1/2 Doors are the available styles Andersen offers, and the differences are merely how much glass is visibly appropriated in each door. FullView being exactly that, the largest amount of glass, letting the sun pour into your home. After you choose a style, you can pick a ventilation system – seasonal or anytime. You can then choose from eight color options, including Sandstone and Wineberry. Now, of course, there are other options and variations to choose from, but these are the more foundational components. You can add a retractable insect screen, which allows for anytime ventilation and hides in the top of the door frame when it’s not in use. An excellent feature for those who love the breezy airflow in a house on a nice, cool Spring day.

Storm Doors

Where Can I Get One?

As you can see, storm doors are an all-around excellent feature for any home. Their look, functionality, purpose, and variety of design make it an excellent commodity to really enhance curb appeal. And guess what? You can get Andersen Storm Doors here at Builders Surplus.  Make the move to increase your protection and security, with a look and design of an elegant storm door. We promise it’ll be a decision you won’t regret!

What’s going on, pros? I hope business is well and thriving underneath the warm weather we’ve been having. It’s about time, right? So, if you have a bathroom remodel coming up then you’ll really appreciate this blog post. We’re going to go over a few of the most affordable and stylish bathroom tiles that we have to offer at Builders Surplus. You can legitimately get everything, without spending everything!

Golden Honey Ledger Stone Bathroom Tile

bathroom tile Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

CLICK TO SHOP!

Ledger Stone has made a major impact in the tile industry, in my opinion. If you’ve noticed, “look-alike” products continue to gain popularity, and Ledger Stone gained its varsity letters before any of them. The one featured below is a fan-favorite, for sure. It’s gorgeous in any setting, but especially bathrooms and, oddly enough, fireplaces, too. Simply stunning. While it does LOOK amazing in the shower, do let your customers know that it is difficult to clean. It needs to be completely waterproof behind the tile or you will get mold.

bathroom tile Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus
So, you can get this stylish, trendy bathroom tile for only $5.99/piece, right here at Builders Surplus. Now, this is one of the priciest product to make this list, but for good reason. If you’re a fan of texture in aesthetics, then this product is for you.

Black Penny Round Mosaic Bathroom Tile

bathroom tile Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

I’m a huge fan of contract in a bathroom, and the Black Penny Round Mosaic bathroom tile is perfect for setting up that kind of style. I’ve always imagined a white floor tile with this product used as a backsplash. It’s timeless. It’s classic. And so eye-appealing. Plus, I’m a huge fan of curvature during any kind of design, so this pattern hits me right in the feels.
bathroom tile Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

Right now, you can get this contrast-maker for only $4.99/sq. ft. One more thing about this, though, is its versatility. Where I’m more inclined to install this bathroom tile as a backsplash, it’s fine for a shower floor, too!

Legend Blanco Large Format Tile

bathroom tile Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus

Click to Shop!

I enjoy the movement in this tile. And it’s a subtle gray, too, ya know? Not too deep, not too light. Just right. Now, this is a Large Format Tile, so the possibilities are pretty much endless, in terms of install. Personally, I think this color belongs on the floor, maybe with a dark vanity top or something of that nature.

bathroom tile Louisville Cincinnati Builders Surplus
As we proceed, you’ll see that these prices really are unmatched, y’all, starting with this one. You can get this Legend Blanco bathroom tile for ONLY $1.99/sq. ft. Heckuva deal, right? Stylish, moderately-neutral, and all for a good price. Come in and seriously get everything without spending everything.

Portland Beige 18×18 Bathroom Tile

Another large format tile, Portland Beige is another one of my favorites due to its tone and color. But, what’s really attractive about this piece is its price. Right now, you can get this tile for only $0.69/sq. ft! That’s less than three quarters, everyone.

This classic, tried-and-true still does wonders in establishing that a traditional look. Honestly, folks, what’s not to like about it. Remember me talking about contrast earlier with the Black Penny — well — this is its counterpart.

But once again, the most attractive trait here is the price, everyone. Only $0.22/piece. Yeah, you read that right. LESS THAN A QUARTER. That’s exceptional. Come scoop this up.

These are just a few choices from our vast collection of bathroom tile, everyone. If I’ve piqued your interest, and you’d like to poke around a little bit more, please feel free to head right here! Home Value: 5 Easy Ways to Increase It

What’s going on, everyone? I do hope you’re well and enjoying the much-anticipated warm weather. Where it seemed like it was a rather mild winter, it felt like ages to me.  If you’re a summer baby like yours truly, then you literally countdown the days until April or May, where you can enjoy a nice drive with the windows down and music up. Plus, now that it’s warm, we can all start working on the most important asset we have — our home. In this blog post, I’ll discuss five ways to easily increase home value. May the warmth inspire and spark creativity, y’all. Let’s begin!

The Best Ways To Increase Home Value

Focus on the Entry Door

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that curb appeal is a monstrous factor when it comes to home value. The front door simply further emphasizes this incredibly significant factor. Essentially, it pulls the eye in and acts as a main focal point to the entire house. Think about it, when you have guests over, what is the first course of action? Walking through the front door. So, naturally, that’s what the eye is going to be attracted to.     home value   Don’t be afraid to get a little quirky when it comes to your front door, either. Want to make it a crazy-cool color? Do it. Want to splash some sort of design on it? Go ahead. I encourage you to make it your own and let it standout. Because, honestly, it’s going to anyway.   home value

Upgrade the Kitchen

Now, listen, I know those three words can seem a bit vague, and even once it’s broken down, it can still be a bit overwhelming. So for all intensive purposes, I’ll just name two components of a kitchen. Also note that your kitchen is arguably (but who would argue) the most important room in the entire house. Because of this, simply renovating a few things will no doubt increase home value. For sure. Cabinets: You may be surprised to know that simply switching out the cabinets in your kitchen will do wonders as far as aesthetics. Maybe you’re tired of the type of cabinet and color, or you’re like me and get antsy when you’ve staring at the same scenery for far too long. I encourage you to take a good, hard look at your cabinets and see if you’d like to make some changes. Remix it up. home value   Countertops: In my opinion, countertops can make or break a kitchen’s overall look. With this in mind, if you’ve been preparing your meals over, say, formica countertops then I think you’d really enjoy a granite or quartz countertops. They’re both sleek, modern-looking, and the characteristics for both are far more superior — in strength, durability, accident-resistance, and maintenance.   home value

Beautify your Bathroom

Kitchens and baths, y’all, that’s where it’s at for value’s sake. These rooms allow a person to express themselves artistically and make a style their own. Like I mentioned before, don’t be afraid to go above and beyond. After all, IT IS your home. Do what you will. However, if you’re going to be selling in the near future, keep the style one that will appeal to a broad range of buyers. Vanities: A bathroom doesn’t call for as much space as a kitchen does, sure, but I’d be lying if I said that these pieces aren’t essential to your bathroom design. Take the same advice I gave you about your kitchen cabinetry and recreate a different design — use interesting colors, textures, and styles and make things harmoniously blend. home value Vanity tops: Much like your kitchen countertops, a vanity top can make or break the design. Now, if it were me, I’d take a look at our cultured marble tops, in addition to our large selection of vanity tops. We truly have some beautiful colors that will blend nicely with any design. I promise you.

Watch your Windows

Windows may seem like a small aspect in home design, but I’m telling you, replacing the old with the new will greatly increase your home value. At Builders Surplus, we carry Silverline by Andersen windows, and they’re true beauties. Available in different designs and styles, these babies will quite literally make each room brighter.   home value   Another thing I kinda like about windows is that they’re two sides of the same coin. We talked about the importance of curb appeal before, and windows sort of add to that enhanced focus, but they’re also very endearing on the inside, as well.   Plus, if you’re kinda crafty, you can enrich the look and put a beautiful set of moulding around each window, achieving that ‘craftsmen’ style perfectly. Just a little food for thought if you want to really increase home value.     home value

Spruce Up the Outside

This probably goes without saying, but a well-maintained, neat, and even colorful yard is going to get some looks. If you want to increase home value, this is definitely an area I’d focus on. Curb appeal, remember? If your grass is as green as a golf course, there’s a nice blend of trees, flowers, and bushes — all neatly clipped — and everything looks proper and perfect, don’t be surprised to see a car come to a slow crawl, peeking in.   home value     Having a yard that’s pleasing to the eye is going to get you those seriously-this-just-went-on-the-market kind of offers, and who doesn’t want to be in that driver’s seat, no pun intended. Just don’t make it TOO busy, you know what I mean. Keep it nice. Keep it neat. Keep it complete.   home value     I hope these five things gave you a bit of insight and, hopefully, some inspiration to make some renovations to increase home value. Change isn’t all bad, people! Remember that, and keep on enjoying this weather! Hope to see y’all in here soon, but until then be safe and stay blessed!

Bamboo Flooring Shopper's Guide

bamboo

So, I probably know what you’re thinking. Bamboo? And just when I thought I’ve seen it all. And, honestly, I’m right there with you in that assessment, but bamboo is actually some pretty legitimate stuff we’re talking about. Today, I’d like to talk to you a little bit about some things you should consider when shopping for this awesome, abstract, type of flooring. So buckle in for a bit, and let me learn you a thing or two!

Why Bamboo?

Right? Like, whoever thought of taking this plant and manufacturing it into something that people can actually walk on is definitely on a completely different mental wavelength than I am, but I applaud whoever did it. So…why?

It’s ‘Green’: Well, for one, it’s environmentally-friendly. If you’re anything like us over here at Builders Surplus, that is definitely something to be valued. To put it in comparison, the trees that are used to make hardwood floors can take 20-25 years to reach full maturity. Bamboo, on the other hand, only takes a mere 5-7 years to reach its adolescence. Then it’s ready to go.

Strength: Secondly, it’s stronger than most of the hardwoods you’ll find beneath your feet. I know this can’t be the first time you’ve heard that bamboo is a rock-solid, so imagine that intensifying strength covering your living or dining room. Pretty cool, right?

Durable: This stuff can take a beating. For example, let’s say it’s Christmas, okay, and you and your cousin are playing your version of “Hot Potato,” with a snow globe. Game’s going good and then one of y’all messes up and the globe passes slips through a set of fingers, descending to your brand-new bamboo floors — everything’s in slo-mo — someone may or may not dive for it, I don’t know. The globe hits the bamboo with a loud ‘thud,’ and you fear the worst. Then you look….and nothing. Nothing at all. Yeah, guys, this stuff is like THAT.

Graphite

Where To Put Bamboo

High-Traffic Areas: This type of flooring was literally meant to be installed in those main areas where people congregate or walk through – living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and hallways. Because of its strength and durability, you’ll achieve that same look you did when first laid it down, no matter where you put it. I told y’all. This is some long-lasting stuff, for sure. It doesn’t swell. Or contract.
NO Bathrooms: Okay, now this is some pretty excellent material, for sure, but it’s not superhuman, okay? It’s kryptonite is water, and bathrooms simply hold too much moisture for it. You don’t want those kinds of problems. Trust me.

Frosted Pearl

Who Would Love Bamboo Flooring?

People with Allergies: For all intensive purposes, it’s safe to say that this type of flooring is hypo-allergenic. Meaning, it can’t be penetrated by the usual, common allergens such as pet hair, pollen, dust, and the other crap that makes me want to yank my nose off.
Those Who Hate Cleaning: When I say this stuff is super low-maintenance, I mean it. Literally, all you need is a broom and a vacuum cleaner. But, I guess, if you’d like to get semi-fancy, you can grab a Swiffer broom. To each his own.

Obsidian

Colors of Bamboo

At Builders Surplus, we custom order bamboo flooring. It’s available in a variety of stunning colors, fourteen in total. The pictures that you see throughout are just a glimpse of what we have to offer. From darker tones like ‘Obsidian’ to lighter tones like ‘Frosted Pearl.’

Installation and Specs on Bamboo Flooring

Below is a chart that details the type of installation and some specified specs about bamboo flooring. You’ll notice that the installation isn’t any different than putting down regular hardwood floors. The glueless locking system is extremely easy. It also details some of the warranties, which is obviously pretty important.

Our Favorite Stains For Unfinished Hardwood Floors

If there’s one thing I know, hardwood floors simply give that feel of class, sophistication, and beauty that can only be described as timeless.
Today, I’d like to discuss one of the aspects of unfinished hardwood floors – its versatility. I am, of course, speaking on the fact that it can be stained to a color of your choosing, and in this blog post, we’ll go over a few of my personal favorites that I’ve come across while working for my father at his home remodeling business.

The Product & Its Many Colors

My father holds the brand, Minwax, with the highest regard. In fact, that’s literally the only stain he uses, no matter what the piece. Now, I can go ahead and tell you that this is for good reason. It just coats SO darn well.
To be specific, the product he uses has been coined Minwax Wood Finishℱ, and it is available in no less than 26 colors. Talk about a variety, right? Sidenote: Where it does coat beautifully with just one application, for best results you should apply two. It will bring out the richness in the color, and you can just thank me later.

Dark Walnut Stain

There’s something about darker hardwood floors that I really appreciate. To me, Dark Walnut brings out the texture in this style of flooring. It’s rich. It’s long-lasting. It exudes that feeling that I mentioned earlier.
And, let me tell ya, if you’re one to open up the windows on a warm, gorgeous days, the way natural light hits this color is simply mesmerizing. Dark tones, bright smiles with these stains. Outstanding.

stain

English Chestnut Stain

Ah, the traditional approach. Whenever I think of a stained floor, this is what comes to mind because it seems like the “tried and true” approach, if I’m being honest.
Not to say that it’s boring or timid in showing its flavor, but it’s just been known to get the job done — which is simply to accentuate the grain of the unfinished hardwood — much like the “Natural” stain color would, if you know what I mean. A bit of a reddish hue, this color works wonders in colonial-style houses. Lovely.

stain

Ipswich Pine Stain

I have to admit, every time I read the color of this stain, I think of the movie, “The Covenant,” an extremely underrated movie about a batch of brothers who are considered descendants of the  “Witches of Ipswich.”
Anyway, sorry for that little tidbit, just sayin’. Back to the blog. This color has a yellowish hue to it that I really admire. It’s nearly like “Natural” because of how light it is, but it exhibits something different, a lovelier feel in my opinion. This stained floor will work wonders underneath darker furniture. Oh, yes.

stain

Jacobean Stain

Ah, my favorite, which is why I saved it for last. Now, remember how I mentioned that I like darker colored hardwood floors? Well, this is IT. No, not the clown. Let’s not go down that road. We’ll stick to these floors.
Number one, how legit is that name? Go ahead and say it, like, three times. Jay-CO-Bean. So cool. I just love how incredibly RICH this color is. The dark swirls, smooth blend of lighter tones, and it’s ability to go anywhere.

stain

Alright, folks, there’s a little insight into some of my favorite stain colors! If it were me, I’d STRONGLY consider the Jacobean if it blends well with the style of your home and everything.
For something a bit lighter, hit up good ole Ipswich, or throw all of my words in the trash and pick from the other 21 colors. But I will say and will suggest once more, Minwax is definitely the way to go. Have fun this Spring, be safe, and stay blessed!

5 Bathroom Styles You Must See Before You Remodel

Okay, before you start the demo phase, which is incidentally my favorite phase, you absolutely positively have to look at these five bathroom styles. Now, I understand that if you have a sledgehammer on deck then you’ve probably (hopefully) already have your design plans in order and you’re quite ready break ground on this bad boy, BUT that doesn’t mean that you can’t allow of a few minor adjustments. Today, I’d like to discuss a few bathroom options, putting everything into perspective in terms of style, including vanities, tops, plumbing, sinks, and tiles.

Traditional Bathroom Styles

The tried-and-true style, as I like to call it. Some call it ordinary, some call it plain, I simply see it for what it is – classic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to the roots without the fancy-shmancy accommodations that some other styles may provide. I’m not knocking other styles, I’m just saying that going the “traditional” route is almost like going to your hometown after a years and years from settling elsewhere. It’s comfortable. It’s safe, and it still provides that warm glow deep in your soul that filters throughout. Simply put, it’s home. And it’s as they say: There’s nothing wrong with going home.

bathroom styles

Modern Bathroom Styles

We’re talking glass showers, sleek sink fixtures, lone freestanding tub, large windows, and as much space as you can manage with this style. The greatest thing about the modern-style is how sleek everything looks. The picture below is actually identified as “modern-minimalist,” and when you get a good look at it, you’ll understand why, but as it is, every element of the bathroom is tasteful, sleek, elegant. It’s easy on color to give away its rich texture. In all of these bathroom styles, this has to be my favorite. Especially since it’s low-key minimalist themed as well. Very sophisticated.

bathroom styles

Hamptons Bathroom Styles

Something I’ve actually very recently been doing a bit of research on, is the Hampton-style. As you can see in the picture below, this style boasts very neutral colors, the majority being white and prides itself on chicness. Subway tile is usually infused in the mix or marble, one of the two. As far as the vanity goes, the shaker style is what’s best for the Hampton look. Usually, again, white to emphasis it’s standout, bright aura. Another added note with this style is the sconce lighting that usually hangs on either side of the mirror, or in the middle. The tapware is usually chrome or nickel-plated. Definitely more of a traditional feel when it comes to the fixtures. Anyhow…I think it’s pretty cool. What do you think?

bathroom styles

Contemporary Bathroom Styles

Similar to the modern style, contemporary brings you an extremely sleek design. Notice how the colors are all very neutral save for one, small accent wall in the background. The fixtures aren’t your common, typical ones, either. They’re fixed to the wall, which completely eradicates any “traditional” style make-up in this design. The look it portrays clearly defines as it a style that lives in the now, in the present, but still establishes room for variation. For example, you could accompany these tones with that of a Hampton-style and still get the same effect, if that makes sense. It’s not my favorite, I admit, but I do appreciate the bold nature of this type of style. For sure.

bathroom styles

Rustic Bathroom Styles

Ah, the rustic look. Who doesn’t like this kind of style is my question. This style of bathroom gives you many options to explore your creativity and allows you to antique some aspects of your bathroom and really push forth that rustic, classically-aged look that I like. In the picture below, I really really like the door style. It’s a craftsman style door setting, but it fits in with the rest of the bathroom. To make a project out of it, you could find an unfinished alder cabinet and reclaim the wood to give it that aged look. This style can usually be found in your country-themed houses, as it really works well with that design. What do you think?

Eco-Friendly Flooring Ideas That Get the "Green" Light

There are many eco-friendly products that are made throughout the world that people choose to buy simply because of its roots, that the product they chose shied away from causing the world harm. Plastic bottles, food wrappings, and now, even vehicles have become a part of the side of consumerism that maintains an environmentally-conscious mind. Well, that also extends to home renovation products, as well! Today, I’m going to discuss three eco-friendly flooring options, including CORK, that are apt in both style and functionality, providing a classically unique look. Let’s dig in!

Eco-Friendly Cork Flooring

This material is relatively new to the world of flooring. Seriously, who would have thought that the thing you pop off to pour champagne or a glass of wine could – or – would ever be used to blanket the floors of a household. Fascinating, really. Anyway, cork is taken from the bark of a cork oak tree, which is commonly found in the Mediterranean forests. The best part about the process is that these lovely trees are not cut down to harvest this material – they are simply stripped. But even then, the bark regrows after three years, making cork a – you guessed it – renewable resource.

For this reason, it is undoubtedly my all time favorite as far as eco-friendly flooring options go. Crazy unique, visually stunning, and truly one-of-a-kind. What’s more is of its chemical properties! It has anti-microbial properties that reduces allergens, is fire-retardant, AND it repels insect. Seriously, though, can it get any better? Actually, yeah. With cork, you’re able to stain it, paint it, and make it any color you want so you’re not so limited. Lifespan of this material? It can last for up to 30 years with the proper maintenance, which by the way, is stupid low. Excellent product right here.

Eco-Friendly Bamboo Flooring

If you know anything about bamboo, you’ll know that it’s strong, intensely durable, and not one of those twigs you can just bust over your knee and walk away happily.  Similar to wood as far as its species, bamboo has been gaining wild popularity as a flooring option. It’s very, very easy to maintain, as easy to install as regular hardwood, and will last you an exceptionally long time. Best thing is, it’s sustainable and only takes a few years to reach its full maturity. Again, much like the above, this material is available in a variety of colors, so you’re not limited to just one design or one style. Options are pretty endless in terms of bamboo’s versatility.

Along with its color variety, is its grain! You know how would may have a certain grain you like depending on the direction of it, or maybe the pattern of dark knots? Well, bamboo, more or less, acts the same. This is one of the reasons why this type of flooring is on the up-and-up! You’re able to make this flooring your own, customizing it to your wants and needs.

Eco-Friendly Concrete Flooring

Now, I’ve wrote about concrete flooring before, and I still think it’s crazy (in a cool way) that it has has slowly crept its way from commercial properties and into the confines of residential households. Usually, this sort of material is used as a sub-flooring, in which case people would just put tile or linoleum or hardwood for their floor. But, it’s 2017, and there are all kinds of things happening, so let’s run with the innovative ideas, shall we?

eco-friendly

In all seriousness, concrete can be polish and tinted to make it look completely different than your standard slab of concrete. You can create tiles from it or design a cool pattern yourself using glass and mosaics to really give your style the emphasis you’d like. In any case, this material is extremely eco-friendly. No chopping up trees to lay these floors down. No. Sir.

It is in my extreme hopes that this post helped you realize that there are in fact some environmentally-friendly flooring options that have been tried and true, proving to be very sustainable, highly efficient, extremely durable in strength, and versatile in style and design to keep the options endless. We also have one of these materials in-store now at any of our two locations in Louisville and Cincinnati! I encourage you to give us a call or stop by soon to check out our Cork Flooring options and see if this eco-friendly material is right for you and your home. Until then, be safe and stay blesssed!

Family Friendly Remodeling Materials

It doesn’t matter if you have a bigger family or a smaller one, accidents are just going to happen. Someone is going to knock over the grape juice all over the kitchen countertops, muddy footprints will trail the floors all the way up to the culprit’s bedroom, someone’s going to neglect the “clean bathroom” chore for weeks at a time, leaving soap scum and grime to everyone’s displeasure, spices will be misplaced or unfortunately found in the fridge, and crumbs will layer the living room floor no matter how many times you vacuum. Families and messes go together like the mop and the broom in the closet down the hallway. It’s inevitable. BUT…there are some remodeling materials that you can use in your renovation that will alleviate some of the stress that these messes bring, some even eradicating them altogether. In this post, we’ll detail some of these remodeling materials, which you’ll undoubtedly think about the next time you’re wiping up spaghetti sauce that’s dribbled down the cabinet door.

Remodeling Materials – Quartz Countertops

So, there’s a term that I need to say here, and at first glance I, too, was like, “Uhhhh…is that a word?” Wipe-ability. I hyphenated it for your sake, but apparently, this is a thing. It means exactly what you think it does, and it goes in context with the first remodeling material I have for you today. Quartz countertops are undoubtedly the easiest surface to maintain. It’s a non-porous material, so there’s no chance of anything staining. It’s also extremely durable; it won’t chip, crack, scratch, or scuff.     remodeling materials   remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – CoreTEC Flooring

New-age technology combined with a stunning, jaw-dropping look, CoreTEC is a flooring like no other. It’s best characteristic and the main reason it makes this list? 100% waterproof. Not water-resilient. Water. Proof. You could dump an entire gallon of whatever on these floors, leave for the weekend, and you’d come back to it staring right back at you like, “What? Was that supposed to phase me or something?” It doesn’t warp. It doesn’t buckle. It doesn’t act like your typical hardwood flooring at all. Too legit. And we have these lovely remodeling materials right here, in store, ready to be installed. Click here to check out our inventory.     remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Tiled Shower Walls

In general, tile is your safest bet when it comes to having a low-maintenance floor. But tiled shower walls exemplifies this characteristic. Heavily. As opposed to fiberglass shower walls, soap scum, dirt, and grime are easier to clean and maintain with a tiled shower wall. It can be as simple as purchasing an After Shower cleaner and wiping the walls down each time. Easy as pie. SIDENOTE: If you do tile your shower walls, refrain from using white grout. Those are TERRIBLY difficult to clean and you’ll curse the day you ever decided that. And chiseling out grout is no fun. Trust me. I know. Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Organizers

Everything just seems to run smoother in the family when you can find the things you’re wanting when you need them. Kitchen organizers are an excellent way to sort out all of your cooking essentials and save some space. Cause after all, counter space can be scarce within any family and in the morning when you’re frantically trying to make breakfast or make lunches for the day, you need as much space as you can get. Installing one of these inexpensive kitchen organizers makes for one of the best remodeling materials on this list. They’re handy and have a way of revolutionizing your organizational patterns in the kitchen. We have an abundance in stock, as well. Head here to shop! remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Island

A kitchen island can be used as one of those hot spots in the house, ya know? A place where people gather to do homework, eat meals, and discuss their day. To me, a kitchen island is one of those assets that just bring together AND they’re one of the most functional tools in a kitchen design. More space. More storage. Less hassle.   remodeling materials   It’s in my hopes that these researching materials will meet your family friendly needs. Once again, we have most of these beneficial products in store! So, come on down to one of our two locations in Louisville and Cincinnati, and get started on your renovation today!

PRO: Additional Options to Impress Your Clients

How’s it going, professionals? I hope business is well, and that you’re so slammed with jobs, you honestly don’t know what to do with yourself at the moment. It’s better to have an abundance of jobs than to be stressing where your next one will be, am I right? Today, I’d like to discuss a few options, quite literally, on how you can maintain repeating customers in your queue. You’ll do this by simply impressing your clients in a way that shows off your finesse as a master of your trade.
In essence, you’ll suggest options that may have been overlooked in the initial design and will hopefully having your customers so satisfied with your expertise that they’ll go to no one else but you during their next renovation. To do so, I’ll break it down by a number of categories – kitchen, bath, flooring, tile, and doors – and provide a suggestion that one, enhances the look of the design, and two, will make your customer very happy that they called you. Cause that’s what it’s all about, right?

Kitchen Options – Crown Moulding

It’s no secret that cabinets are a significant factor in any kitchen design. They’re essential for the appearance of the kitchen style, but also for functionality as well. Typically, larger families require more kitchen space, from both the countertops and cabinets. The trick is to blend both together, using aesthetics as well as how functional the cabinets are to produce a design that gives you the best of both worlds. Those two words in bold, two lines above are yet another way to enhance the look of the kitchen without your customer’s digging too deep into their wallets.
The Crown Moulding option is one that can COMPLETELY change the look of a kitchen. Yes, it’s that drastic. It makes the difference of your standard cabinet look to something more elegant, elaborate, and sophisticated. At a pretty low cost. There’s a wide variety of options, too. Everything from extremely intricate designs to simple, smooth beveled edges. Just throw it out as a suggestion, and let your customers determine if they like the look or not. But – and I’m willing to bet – they’ll appreciate the tip.

options

Bath Options – Backsplash

Ah, talk about an enhancement. A tiled backsplash in a kitchen is almost mandatory once you’ve installed a couple during bathroom renovations. It’s simply a lovely feature, and I have a theory on why that is. Bear with me here, but a design is only as good as the components that it’s made of. Let’s take the color aspect of it all. If the colors do not work, the design does not work. But if the colors mesh well with another then it becomes appealing to the eye. So, when it comes to a backsplash, it’s just another asset, or component, that helps blend in the colors in the design.
Plus, look at the materials you’re dealing with, vanity alone. You have the color of the vanity, the color of the countertop, the wall paint color, accessories, and so on…and then when you add a backsplash, it just pulls everything together to make something quite extraordinary. Once again, low on cost, relatively easy on install, and tremendous on appearance. I love this option. Your clients will, as well. Take a peek at our backsplash tile options on our website. We have a wide variety of styles and finishes that will accommodate a number if designs!

Flooring Options – Quarter Round

In the remodeling industry, as you know, you hear the phrase “finishing touches” multiple times in conversation. Putting in quarter round after you’ve installed the floor and finished trimming the room is simply one of those things you can do to really “complete” a room. That God awful gap between the base boards and the floor is simply not a good look, and yes, I know that some people are fine with it to lower costs, but the look is ten times better when it’s taken care of. Maybe twenty.
I’d definitely suggest this option if you’re renovating a wide, open area like a basement or something of that nature. Closets and storage rooms aren’t as important, but in rooms where there’s going to be a flow of traffic, where your clients will entertain their guests, and so on…this is an excellent option. It’s the dot on the ‘i’ and the cross on the ‘t’.

options

Tile Options – Decorative Mosaic

Out of all the options that I’ll list in this post, this is the one that I’d highly suggest. Especially if you’re installing a tiled shower or a backsplash. My father likes to call them “decos,” for short, and we’ve installed quite a bit of them for a number of clients. They absolutely love the look. To me, personally, I think it’s best exemplified in a stand-up, tiled shower. Placing them about eye level, the color blends (or contrast, if you prefer) just make it truly legit design.
Honestly, that’s as best as I can say it. It’s just a 100%, cool-as-all-get-out, bad@$$ design. Straight up. I implore you to at least suggest “deco” tiles when on your next tile job. It’s stunning. Simply stunning. Again, we have a vast amount of some of the finest design and trends in decorative mosaic tiles that one can ask for. Go take a look right here!

Door Options – Custom Paint it

You have many of your standard colors out there to work with, it is true. But, if you want to really make a lasting impression, suggest to your client that they purchase a custom paint to finish of their door. It may seem a bit…quirky, sure, but I’m telling you, it’s effective. Last summer, one of my father’s longtime clients had us install an exterior door for them. The lady of the house wanted the front door to “pop,” so we went with this Canary Yellow color.
\And I’ll tell ya what, if I wasn’t almost blinded while about 50 times as I applied the paint. Super bright. Vivid. Distinct. At first, I thought these characteristics were faults, but once we installed it, and drove up on it for the first time, I began to appreciate its vivacity. It drew the eye, and to me, that’s what mattered most. Suggest a custom paint color, urge your client to think outside of the box, to have a one of a kind feature in a home that will make it entirely their own. Suggest these options, and watch the effects unfurl.

MADE IN THE US: One Reason to Love Wellborn Cabinets

Admit it, when you purchase an item from a store and see the “Made in the U.S.” tag, it kinda sorta makes you feel good about your purchase, doesn’t it? I’d venture to say it’s solely because you know that you’ve just supported a company that has its roots instilled in the soil you walk on. It is a homegrown, homemade product that you’ve bought with your hard earned cash. As is the cycle of our nation’s system, and so therefore, you boost the economy, further benefitting businesses locally AND nationally.     This is why, and I’m sure you know, there’s been an influx in buying locally and supporting companies that manufacture goods in America. This is not to say that you don’t condone or intentionally not seek to benefit foreign exchange, but it’s good to know when your money is circulating within the confines of your nation. Simple as that. And that is yet another reason we love Wellborn Cabinets! They’re made right here in the U. S. of A. Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about these homemade cabinets, detailing some history, and why they’re such a hot commodity at our stores.

About Wellborn Cabinets

1961   The Wellborn family have owned and operated Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., since 1961. Think about it, that’s more than fifty years of success! Any business that makes it past the 50-year mark absolutely has a timeless product, in my opinion. You simply don’t make it that far without providing customers a timeless, durable product. The company was originally founded by Paul and Doug Wellborn, and they’re located in the Deep South, in Ashland, Alabama. Their primary goal is a prime reason for their lengthy success. In their website, their goal is “to provide kitchen and bath cabinets crafted by dedicated Wellborn employees with the utmost quality and care.” aerial-photo-1100-x-479   The company had humble beginnings, starting out in a 3,200 sq. ft (holy smokes) building that manufactured cost-effective kitchen and bath cabinets and specialized in kitchen and bath contract sales for government-financed housing. Thirty five years after its inception, Paul Wellborn bought the entire company, became the sole owner, and switched up the Wellborn Cabinet clientele, focusing primarily on residential kitchen and bath dealers. Since then, the company has expanded its reach in both size and product selection, branching out to 6 product lines. In present day, Paul and the Wellborn family manufacture the company cabinets from start to finish in a 2,000,000 sq. ft. (pick up your jaw) facility in Ashland. Their tagline reads: Wellborn Cabinet, Time Tested, Quality Craftsmanship…Your Whole Home Solution. In essence, this company is about their business, and they are NOT playing around. You have to appreciate this kind of dedication.

Wellborn Cabinets – Made in the U.S.A.

godblessamerica   Like I explained before, it’s nice knowing the products you purchase are made here in this great nation. Wellborn Cabinets knows this, and they’ve dedicated their work to keep producing that same quality throughout its history. Their facility completely controls quality from the timber that arrives from the sawmill to the finished cabinet. This, as they say, will ensure you of a premium, quality cabinet. 100% Guaranteed. Also, this company is listed on numerous Made in America/USA websites with other manufacturers who also produce their products here, including MadeinUSA.com, KeepitUSAmade.com, and Backintheusa.us.

Wellborn Cabinets Go Green

environment   This company is in line with a heavy commitment to our environment and for good reason, right? Their website states, “environmental stewardship has been part of Wellborn’s culture since the beginning. This responsibility has always been about more than just words and has been proven through decades of actions, investments, and practices.” Here’s another little tidbit that I find equally as fascinating: Wellborn has recycling programs that utilize wood waste to generate power and steam and continue to lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions through technology. In fact, the energy they gain from waste powers hear for 5, 124 homes in one year. That’s incredible.   greenchoice   The company “utilizes steam from from the wood fired co-generation plant in the dry kilns, heating ovens, and paint room. The process saves approximately 300,000 (MCF) thousand cubic feet of natural gas annually, a non-renewable energy source, by using collected shavings.  They also partner with their contributors to further their environmental practices! This, as they say on their page, is why you’ll find the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program seal on their cabinetry. It’s clairvoyantly clear that this company has pushed themselves in the right direction towards a better future, perfecting their practices for a safer, cleaner environment. It is as their “Green” page states, “For Our Planet – Today, Tomorrow and Always” and “For the Future of Our Children.” I’m not quite sure you can find a more giving or environmentally-conscious company than this one, folks.     children   And there you have it, folks, a company that prides itself on being born right here in the U.S.A. They’re committed, focused, detail-oriented, and have a persistent drive to manufacture a quality product to produce lasting, satisfied smile, and all in an environmentally-safe way. You can’t make up this kind of genius, y’all. I urge you to the utmost degree to check these guys out when you consider doing a kitchen or bath remodel. As I’ve detailed above, you will not be disappointed. In the slightest. Until next time, everyone, be safe, and enjoy this new year! Stay blessed!

Our Favorite Kitchen Organization Products to Save Space

Listen, sometimes we simply have too much stuff. It’s times like these where things start to look a bit too cramped. Ideally, we want our kitchen to look as sleek and refined as we possibly can. We don’t want to hit our heads on pots and pans, scrape hips on the edge of countertops, or have to move the entire kitchen to the left just so we can cook dinner. The kitchen should be a peaceful place of work, and it’s because of this necessity that resources like the ones I’m about to show you exist in the world. In this post, I’ll discuss some of our favorite kitchen organization products that will save you space…and prevent headaches.

The Base Filler Pullout

This pullout is all but hidden, and as you can see below, is capable of storing a number of kitchen essentials. It’s sleek, easy to maneuver, and extremely spacious for for how thin it is. Not gonna lie, I kind of like it for a place to put spices and various ingredients. Just meshes will with the space provided, doesn’t it? Perfect for kitchen organization. kitchen organization

The Blind Corner Pullout

Okay, so, this pullout IS hidden. With a smooth, quick swivel, this product allows you to easily get to the bigger kitchen necessities like large plates, bowls, spaghetti pans, strainers, and toddlers. Joking. But in all seriousness, this is probably one of my favorites. Unless you know about it, you’d never know about it, get me? How secretive. kitchen organization     hardwareresources

The Blind Corner Sliding Door

Similar to the resource above, this kitchen organization tool swivels, providing you an easy way to get to the things you need. I don’t know about y’all, but it can be a pain having to squat down and rummage through the cabinets just to get to the pot you’re looking for. Don’t judge me, though, I’m 6’2”. It’s a bit strenuous. Anyway, notice how there’s not just one shelving unit, but two. That’s pretty mint. kitchen organization

The Bottle Rack

Like wine, but don’t have all the space for your glasses. Bam. Problem solved. Alright, so it goes without saying that this is just extremely functional. I’m sure you’ve seen them before, so I won’t go into too much detail, but it’s simple enough. Instead of taking up a bunch of space in your cabinets and risk clinking one too hard, causing it to break, you simply hang them. Easy enough, right? We have one just for you, by the way, right here. Go check it out. kitchen organization

Pullout Waste Container

And last, but certainly not least, is everyone’s favorite. There are people who don’t like to have their trash can just chillin’ out in the open. This pullout waste container satisfies these people in that it, well, hides the trash can. Pull the drawer out, throw your trash away, and close. Easy-peezy. This allows for some extra floor space, and it’s just an added touch for when guests come over and what not. kitchen organization

Achieving the Best Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel

Alright, so you’re living in Cincy. Perhaps you’ve just purchased a house and have some work to do to make it exactly to your liking OR you’ve been living there for a while and feel the need to make some adjustments. It goes without saying that this process can get a bit overwhelming, so during this blog post, I’d like to lay it all out for you on how to achieve the best Cincinnati kitchen remodel!
kitchen remodel Cincinnati

Planning

This is a HUGE component to the entire process, and it’s multi-faceted, so listen up, folks. As part of the planning process, you need to know exactly what you’d like to do. Whether it’s your or your spouse, or both, it’s essential that you try to pinpoint exactly what you’d like to do before you go out shopping. The reasoning is simple.
kitchen remodeling Cincinnati
If you have a good idea of your wants and needs, you can fixate your budget, as opposed to shopping around blind, and end up spending much more than you accounted for. There are some truly brilliant design commodities in this industry, but some are better suited than others. Please, keep that in mind.

Research Contractors

Once you’ve gathered all of your thoughts on what you’d like to do, it’s time to do a bit of research. First, you should research contractors around the Cincinnati area. Go online, look at reviews, ask around on social media, and make a list of the contractors you like. I encourage you to visit the Better Business Bureau website on contractor services in the Cincy area. In fact, if you’ll click here, it’ll direct you to the full list that you’ll need. Once you’ve done this, call them.
Explain in as much detail as you can on what you want your kitchen remodel to be entirely. Once you’ve done this with each respectable contractor, it’s time to get estimates. This will determine your budget as far as labor goes. This number will dictate how much you’re willing to spend on the materials you’ll need – the other half of this process.

Research Materials

Now, for the fun part. Getting the materials you need for your Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel. I encourage you look around to as many department stores as you can in the Cincy area. But, and I would be remiss not to mention it, we have a store located in Newport that should accommodate your entire kitchen remodel. I say you should compare because once you do, you’ll see how truly great out prices are, and why the services we offer are such an incentive.

Feel free to head to our website and check out what we have!  We have cabinets, hardware, countertops, sinks, and plenty more where that came from. Once you’ve shopped around and picked out what you’d like…it’s nearly time to start.

Remodel Time

You’ve got your contractor, you’ve picked out your materials, and now it’s time to break ground on your Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel! Okay, so, the number one thing I have to make sure I get across is to be patient. Patience is key during this entire process. It’s going to be noisy, you’re kitchen will be gone as you know it, and it’ll never be the same. Cause eventually, it’ll be better. But, it’s important to note that you are losing some things, like the obvious, a place to cook meals.
Amazing kitchen remodel Cincinnati
Pretty important, I’d say. It’s imperative you take this into consideration. Make a temporary meal-making place, plan to have dinner with some neighbors, go out to eat at a family restaurant a couple nights a week. Ideally, you have a contractor that you trust, and you can go away for a little bit, but we don’t live in a perfect world, do we? In any case, have patience and solace in the fact that when it’s over…you’ll have your dream kitchen. Case closed.

And there it is, folks. Your Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel. It really is all about planning, so it is in my hopes that you heed my advice. Plan accordingly, and be patient. It can be as simple as that.

Simple Additions to Upgrade Your Kitchen Cabinets

Today we’re going to cover some simple ways to upgrade your kitchen cabinets. You also may be thinking of some ways to spruce up an area or two, you know, to really make a lasting impression. Since the kitchen is one of the main focal points during any time, and not just the holidays, I’d like to discuss some additions you can make to your kitchen cabinets that are easy, quick, and make a real difference!

Crown Moulding

It is with no surprise that this finishing material makes the list because they are created to serve this particular purpose – to inexpensively give an elegant appearance. Best part is, you’re not limited to just one design or fashion. You can make it simple, using crown moulding that has a few beveled edges OR you can crazy elaborate like the one pictured below. Whatever suits your fancy, really. Installation is easy, and the look will really enhance the design on your kitchen cabinets. Trust me. kitchen cabinets

Glass-Paneled Cabinet Doors

I really like this look. To me, it makes the kitchen seem more open, you know what I mean? Installing glass-paneled cabinet doors gives your kitchen design more depth. You can show off some fancy china, decorative plates, or maybe your quirky collection of coffee cups. Either way, this addition is for everyone. It’s a cool way to give your cabinets a bit more character, as opposed to a variety of solid doors.   kitchen cabinets

Cabinet Scribe

Purely for aesthetics as opposed for functionality, this little finishing piece does wonders for the look of your kitchen cabinets. It is installed at the edge of the cabinet where it meets the wall, and is used to hide any gaps that may appear. This, people, is as simple as it gets, and it makes a monstrous difference. Scribe is just one of those pieces that gives your cabinets that complete, finished look. You can look back afterwards, and finally say, “Yes. My job here is done.”   kitchen cabinets

Cabinet Toe Kicks

Similar to the aforementioned, this finishing piece is pretty much just for the eye. Toe Kicks are used to cover the space between the floor and the cabinet, and once again just appeases the eye. It’s a quick install, and really changes the appearance, especially in terms of your kitchen flooring. Sometimes, it’s the little things that pack the most punch, for sure.   kitchen cabinets

Cabinet Hardware

Ah, my favorite addition to make this list. Cabinet hardware, to me, really sets the tone of your kitchen cabinets for a couple of reasons. One, with the many variations and styles of hardware, you’re able to really choose and hone in on how you want your cabinets to look. It’s a prime opportunity to make your kitchen unique, in your image. Now, we have some prime names in-store that will really do wonders for your kitchen cabinets. Traditional pieces, contemporary, rustic, “Old World” styles and many more are available, so please feel free to come in and see first-hand. Until then, you can check out our brands including Jeffrey Alexander, and some of our special buy hardware options!   kitchen cabinets   There you have it, folks. Five simple, quick-install additions that will leave a lasting impression to whomever enters your kitchen! I hope this post helped you in every way possible, and you’ve gained at least a little inspiration to rise and DIY today! Until then, have a Happy Thanksgiving, eat as much as you can, and take the best nap you’ve ever had. Stay safe, and be blessed.

2016 Design Review: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Well, it’s been an interesting year! Definitely one for the books, I’d say. But we’ll hone it in during this post and talk about a design review, as opposed to crazy elections, erupting riots, and Pokemon Go. We’ll just leave that for the media to handle. So, allow me to list a few designs for you, the best and the worst during this past year, what worked and what, well, just didn’t.

Design Review: The Good

Reclaimed Wood: If you ask me, this look is simply timeless. Making wood look aged and antiqued isn’t just fun to do, but the product is pretty satisfying as well. Unique-looking, this style has definitely made a name for itself this past year, and we can only hope that it’ll stick around.
Background of reclaimed timber for a modern rustic look
Black Window Frames: Most window frames that you see are limited in color. You have your gentle whites and maybe an almond or two that you’ll come across, but in 2016, darkening the frames turned out to be aesthetically pleasing. And I have to say, I love the look. It makes the window a focal point, which is perfect for a craftsman or contemporary window.
Andersen 400 Series Woodwright Insert Double-Hung Replacement Window with Black Exterior detail shot of right side of check rail. Replacement Home Style Craftsman Bungalow
Minimal design: No surprise here, right? One of the hottest trends this past year was the subtle hints of no design at all. Playing with neutral, light colors only and not making an area look “too busy.”
Bright light modern minimalist bedroom interior with a king size bed below a rows of windows on a light colored parquet floor with white walls. 3d Rendering.
Use of concrete: This trend took 2016 by storm! Before, concrete was seen as more of an industrial material, seen mainly in factory warehouses or other commercial properties, but not anymore. One of the hottest styles in the kitchen world right now are concrete countertops. Having the ability to shape and mold your own working space has piqued many people’s interests across the nation. The picture below is from Kelly Moore, author of blog The Journey of Bags, Photography, Life & Moore. You can check out the original post here.

Glass tile: Most notably in backsplashes, glass tile became a huge hit, bumping ceramic tile to the wayside in this design review.

Design Review: The Bad

Stainless Steel Appliances: I’m only 25, but I can still remember stainless steel appliances being the IN thing when I was a kid. Apparently, it was similar to that of having a Mercedes in the drive at the time – if you had it, it meant “you made it.” Well, that’s no longer the case anymore. These appliances are have run its course, mainly because of how limited you are with the rest of your design.
a beautiful bright modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances
Copper Lighting: I’ve never much cared for copper as a finish to begin with, although I can see where some would find it appealing. For those that do adore this sleek, shiny (maybe a bit too shiny) finish, it seems that it’s being put to the back burner as a design trend.
Brown Copper Ceiling Lamp isolated on white
Mason Jars: This is definitely more of an interior design trend than anything, but I couldn’t agree with it more. Can we please stop using mason jars as design props to set around the house? At first, I’ll admit, it was an interesting idea. Gave the scenery an old-fashioned, borderline rustic look that made a house feel like a home. But, like many trends, it’s been overdone, and therefore also receives the boot on this list. Sorry, moonshiners.
christmas decorations candles in glass jars with fir on a old wooden table
Chevron: Ah, another design that people went crazy for, but has become so prominent, it’s getting overwhelming. Now, having been to college, I’ve seen this a lot. Like, a lot a lot, and honestly, the look just makes me cringe a bit now. In any case, the design has been deemed “out” by many interior designers and big-time, major home remodeling resources like Houzz. Bye, bye Chevron.

How to Achieve your Home Remodeling Goals in 2017

New home remodel with new kitchen and diningroom in eclectic style Alright, let me guess. You’ve been itching and dying to get some remodeling done around the house, but something always comes up or you forget about it for a time, or maybe the finances aren’t all in the right spot in the moment, and you simply [think] you need more time. I get it, I get it. it. We all know how life can be at times, but I implore you to wait no longer. Let 2017 be the year you go remodel your kitchen, let 2017 be the year you do gut out the bathroom because the style looks like it’s from the 1870s, let this next year be limitless, the only bounds being your creative limit. But how do you do this? An excellent question that will be followed by a similar answer. In this post, I’d like to discuss what you can do to take action in your home remodeling and quit living in procrastination nation.

Home Remodeling Plan

home remodeling   The very first thing you need to do is take some time to relax and plan exactly what you’d like to do. Include your significant other, lay down, get out a sketch pad, and draw up some designs that you’d like to incorporate. It’s easy to just say, “Yeah, um, we really need to do something about this kitchen,” but it’s quite another thing to detail out why that is specifically. In any case, this is the stage where it’s time to pinpoint exactly what you’d like to do. Want more kitchen space? Then perhaps you need to knock out a wall or two. Need more storage? Then it’s time to think about more cabinets. home remodeling Think your bathroom would be more suitable to your liking if you had a standing shower as opposed to a tub? Figure it in. Let you and your family create a “roundtable” atmosphere, dishing out ideas and make your new remodel functional as well as satisfying. If you make it a fun activity with the whole family or just you and your spouse, then it won’t be a drag or something to just get over with. It can and will be an exciting process.

Home Remodeling Design

home remodeling Alright, you’ve achieved what you’d like to happen, now it’s time to get serious about your home remodeling ideas. At Builders Surplus, we like to be included in this step in the process, which is why we offer a free design consultation with one of our professionals. They will literally sit down with you and your drawings and go over some design options with you, offering professional advice and suggestions. See, you don’t have to do all of this yourself. We love to and are so willing to help you during this entire process. home remodeling   During this time, it’s time to start talking about the price of your home remodeling. Now unbeknownst to you or not, we have several financing options that will accommodate anyone that wants to make their dream remodels come true. We would be more than happy to go over these with you! Rest assured when you leave your consultation you’ll have a very clear understanding of the design, your budget, and what you can expect during your remodel.

Home Remodeling Execution

home remodeling   Ah, it’s down to the nitty-gritty now. Remember last year when you didn’t get done what you wanted to get done. This last and final step let’s those thoughts be a part of the past – it’s time to look at the present. Cause it’s here. Now, we 100% understand if you’d like to just take the reigns from here and be on your way. Home remodeling is a crazy, self-fulfilling, self-satisfying process, but I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that we do, in fact, offer installation services. Seriously, everything from kitchen remodels to windows, we have you covered. home remodeling Now, listen, I’ve neatly sorted this process in three, simple steps. Please understand that gaining your dreams can be as simple as following them, and do not hesitate to give us a call or reach out to us. We want to help you reach these goals and see these dreams come true. So, don’t hesitate to call us anytime at any of our two locations. For reference, here’s our contact page right here. Until then, stay safe and be blessed.

Unique DIY Touches For Your Kitchen Island

kitchen island

It goes without saying that a kitchen island can be one of the most prominent features in the entire design, and not because it’s literally right in the middle of everything, although that plays its part. This feature simply opens up an array of possibilities in terms of design and functionality. Today, I’d like to discuss a few DIY options that will make your kitchen island stand out in a very positive way!

Add Beadboard to your Kitchen Island

Adding this sorta subtle piece of decor gives your island a certain edge, a certain feel to it instead of plain ole cabinetry faces. The vertical lines give the island a grander appeal when one enters the kitchen, too. Keep in mind, you can also paint beadboard the color that you’d like, adhering it your overall design and style.

Using Reclaimed Wood on your Kitchen Island

Simply put, this looks is as legitimate as it gets. Seriously, no joke. Especially if you’re going for the rustic, antiqued look. It adds a certain flavor to the design, piquing an irresistible interest. If you’re looking for a simple way to give your island that well sought after rustic look to compliment your kitchen, I definitely recommend this idea.

Install Hooks on your Kitchen Island

Cause why not, right? You have this lovely island just chillin’ in the center of your kitchen, so I think it’s only fitting that you use it for storage! Duh. Put some hooks or some dowels at the edge of your island to hang coffee mugs, towels, and such. I feel like this gives the kitchen island more of a homey, comfortable look, you know what I mean? Not only does it look neat and it’s extremely useful, but it adds to the organizational element of your kitchen, giving you maximum functionality. This…is an excellent idea.

Add Shelves to your Kitchen Island

Much like the above, this is just another easy way to give yourself some more storage space or decorate it the way you’d like and put knick-knacks and sentimentals on them to make the design your own. Either way, no one has ever complained about extra shelving. Ever. Sidenote: Another great idea. Just saying.

Set Some Stools Around your Kitchen Island

If you have the room, then I supremely suggest this! It may not seem like such an addition at first, but wait till that first huge Sunday breakfast or when it’s your turn to host the Thanksgiving party, and you’ll begin to see its beneficial uses. Plus, it’s just as I explained in the intro, it’s simply a nice touch.

So, there you have it, folks. Just a few ideas to get the gears rolling! Just remember to never reject the opportunity to make the style of your home your own. It’s your niche, your sanctuary, and if it makes you happy, do it. You want a complete baby blue kitchen island? Do it. You want an entire island made out of Legos? Get it done. There is no bounds to your creativity, y’all. Embrace it…and use it. Also, I wasn’t kidding about the Lego island.

Patio Doors: Increase Home Style and Value

I’ve discussed before in several posts about the importance of a door. That it being a subtle transition from room to room, a quick pause for a setup of a new design or color, or to further enhance the overall style are just a few points of its major significance. Today, during this post, I’d like to discuss a style of door that looks so good it can and will increase your home’s value.

Why Patio Doors?

Why patio doors, you may ask? The answer is simple. It’s a style that’s been around for decades and continues to drop jaws in amazement. It does so for a couple of reasons. Here, I’ll explain.
patio doors
Adds Beauty: There’s no doubt about it, a patio door makes a house more beautiful. Whether you have a large space or merely adequate, a patio door will set off the front (or back) of your house nicely, and it’ll positively change the look, especially in terms of curb appeal.

Adds Value: If you’ve just installed a patio door, any style of it, then pat yourself on the back because you have directly added value to your home. A brilliantly-designed, masterfully-installed patio door will illuminate your entire front porch in terms of appeal, something that makes a tremendous difference when asking top dollar for your home.

Improves Energy Efficiency: Installing one of these bad boys means more natural light and fresh air to come into your home. This means spending less money on the AC, and also on electricity, having to use artificial light. Definitely nothing wrong with a little bit of sunshine in your life, right

Patio Doors – Styles

patio doors
Sliding: Also called gliding doors, this kind of style has quickly rose as a more popular option. It’s capable of letting in a lot of natural light, giving that fresh, clear-as-day appearance and makes thing less “stuffy” in a household. They usually consist of two or more panel, one obviously having the capability of sliding back and forth.

Swinging: These doors operate pretty similar to a regular, standard door and “swing” in the same fashion. They’re also called “hinged” doors for that same reason, by the way. They’re usually center hung with a hinge on either side of the door. Pretty cool design and mechanism of if you ask me. There’s a second type of swinging patio door, which is widely known as the “french” door, a dual-door that meets in the middle.
patio doors
Folding: These are my personal favorite because when folded all the way out, you gain a vast amount of space. They operate much like a folding ladder almost, or an accordion, folding a few times before being bunched at the very end of the overhead track.

Patio Doors – Materials

Fiberglass: An excellent option, and definitely cost-effective, fiberglass can emulate the look and feel of wood, giving you the natural appearance that you’re looking for.

Aluminum: Very strong, very durable, but also incredibly light, which (trust me on this one) goes a long way when it comes to installation. Aluminum is a fantastic material for your patio door.
patio doors
Steel: Another cost-friendly option, but definitely not as light as the aforementioned. This kind of doors are treated to prevent any minor or major rust issues, so there’s definitely no worries in terms of weathering.
patio doors
Vinyl: Strong, durable, but pretty darn expensive. It has the ability to withstand most climates, and will never fade, discolor, or flake. An excellent material for ANY door, really.
patio doors
Wood: One of your more common choices. This option comes in a variety of stains and characteristics, making it a very popular option.
