Backsplash Ideas For Your Kitchen Style!

Today, we’ll be offering up some of the best backsplash ideas for your kitchen that are on the scene this season. Backsplash is the best accessory that you can add to your kitchen to make it unique or give it a real wow factor, so choosing the right tile for you is crucial. In the past, backsplash has been limited to certain shapes, materials, or sizes. Well, the past is in the past, because today, you can use virtually ANY tile choice you please and make it your own, if done the right way of course. Here are some of our favorite picks in no particular order that may be somewhat unconventional, but definitely memorable.

1. Ledger Stone Backsplash Ideas

leder-stone-kitchen-backsplash-ideas

ledger-stone-gold-rush0backsplash ideas

This ledger stone is called Gold Rush, and we offer this in stock, every day. There are 6 different color variations, but the result with all of them is the same: unique, rough around the edges, while still looking high class. It works perfectly with the rustic or craftsman style. Ledger stone backsplash ideas are some of my favorites, because they aren’t overdone & are not seen on a very regular basis, making them even more unique.

2. Arabesque Pattern Backsplash

modern-wall-design-kitchen-backsplashs-ideas

arabesque-antique-white-backsplash-ideas

The arabesque pattern backsplash is probably one of my very favorites in this list. It looks elegant, somewhat vintage, and also works with the farmhouse or rustic vibe when used appropriately. The unique shape catches your eye and keeps your interest. Definitely a more feminine choice, but I have known men that are fond of it as well! We offer the Arabesque Antique White in store as one of our in stock backsplash options, found here.

3. Brick Tile Backsplash Options

stainless-steel-kitchen-industrial-wood-brick-backsplash ideas
capella-red-bric-tile-backsplash

This red brick is actually a TILE, making it that much more appealing! Brick is hot right now, and brick backsplash ideas are gorgeous! It works for both males and females in the industrial style, rustic style, farmhouse style, or even the traditional style. The fact that it’s a tile makes it fairly easy to install, and while this is a custom order product from our store, it has a very short lead time. This Capella Red Brick Tile is definitely a winner in my opinion.

4. Large Tile “Flooring” Backsplash Ideas

furniture-modern-silver-gray-long-subway-marble-backsplash-tile-4

large-grey-tile-backsplash-ideas

This is a definitely a recent trend. People are no longer sticking to the basic, small, backsplash tile to complete their kitchen. Today, it is becoming quite common to take a typical floor tile and install it as your backsplash. This grey backsplash is extremely versatile in terms of color palettes that will match and styles that it will coordinate with. We offer a large selection of this type of tile in store, as well as in our custom order options. To see our in stock tile selection, click here.

5. Traditional Subway Tile With a Twist

wavy-subway-tile-kitchen-backsplash -ideas

Subway tile backsplash is one of the most classic and commonly used backsplash ideas. There are many colors to choose from in several different materials, but this is a new twist on an old favorite. The tiles are no longer flat, but have a wavy texture to them that gives it a “handmade” look. We love it and so far, our customers have too!

6. Textured Pebble Stone Backsplash

This is one of the most surprising of the backsplash ideas, in my opinion. This is typically not a tile that you see used for backsplash in kitchens. I have seen this in many bathrooms, on the floors of showers, etc, but it is so gorgeous in the photo above! It gives it a very zen feeling. That, paired with the neutrals of black quartz countertops and white shaker cabinets, make it a neutral, peaceful kitchen that most people would love to have!

7. Bright Colored Glass Mosaic

This is another one of the backsplash ideas that has been primarily used in bathrooms up until recently. The shimmery, bright, glass mosaic tile makes a big statement and gives the kitchen a colorful pop! These are typically best suited with neutral colored cabinets. This blue tile is another of our in stock options in our Cincinnati / Newport location, as well as our Louisville, Ky location.

8. Geometric Patterned Backsplash

Carrara marble backsplash is a popular choice, and has been for years. It is the ultimate in luxury and style. However, the shapes that this gorgeous stone is being made into have definitely changed over the years. The geometric and hexagon shapes are extremely popular right now, in any material, but pair that with the classic elegance of marble, and you’ve definitely got a winner on your hards. Any kitchen would be so lucky to be graced by its presence.

9. Mixed Metals Mosaics

Mixing metals with glass mosaics is a great new trend that we love! It adds a bit of shine and glam without being overly girly. The backsplash above is a great choice for men and women alike. It is definitely a great choice for modern and contemporary styles. Get more ideas for other metal backsplash ideas here.

10. Bead Board Backsplash

beadboard backsplash ideas
Bead board is such a simple, classic piece that can go in virtually every room of your home. The rise of the farmhouse style has definitely increased the use of bead board. This is one of the most simple ideas that adds a very lovely touch to whatever space you add it to, which in this case would be your kitchen. This is custom order option available in our store that will make your favorite room stand out in the crowd while adding a cozy, home grown feel.

We hope yo have enjoyed our list of the top 10 backsplash ideas for your kitchen! What to Expect When You’re Expecting a Kitchen Remodel

If you’re reading this, you’re most likely considering a kitchen remodel, or you’re about to begin one. Either way, being prepared is always the best way to go. Some people have an idea of what they expect to encounter in a kitchen remodel, but it’s not always accurate. So, we’re going to go over exactly what you can expect when working with a designer and getting a kitchen installation.

Using a Designer for a Kitchen Remodel

You may think it’s expensive to use a professional kitchen designer for your kitchen remodel. That’s not the case, at least when you work with Builders Surplus! Our design services are FREE! So, unless you’re an expert, there is no reason not to use these amazing services. They will help you find the product lines that fit your wants and needs, help you stay within budget, and alert you to any issues that may arise with any desired layout changes and help you find solutions. Here’s how the process works.

1. Initial Consultation

This meeting occurs in Builders Surplus location. In this meeting, budget is determined, as well as cabinet door style and what kind of design aesthetic you’re looking for, if you have not already decided. Product lines will be discussed and you will learn the differences in them. What is most durable, eco-friendly, budget friendly, etc.

2. Measurements

If you have your own measurements, we can get started on your design, but measurements will need to be done by us for us to guarantee the fit. If you are using your own installers, they will need to guarantee the fit for you. Measurements are VERY important in making sure your design comes out perfectly.

3. Design is Generated

Depending on kitchen size, complexity and number of people ahead of you waiting for designs, your time frame for receiving this can vary between 1-3 weeks. Initial layout is generated based on the info given in step 1 and 2. This is done in a computer system that allows you to see a 3D image of your desired kitchen with the products you choose for your kitchen remodel. HOW COOL!

4. Reviews and Changes

You could have 1 to 2 additional rounds of changes and revisions. The more up front information you can give your designer about your preferences and budget, the more accurate your initial design will be, meaning there are fewer changes to make, and you can start your kitchen remodel sooner.

5. Products are Ordered & Delivered

Take home your in stock products or arrange for quick pickup. The rest will be delivered to your home or to our store (Depending on your cabinet line) in around 4 weeks. About 1 week before your delivery, your designer will be in touch with you to make sure your installation or pick up/delivery are on schedule. During delivery, it is possible that damage can occur to your products. Please be aware of this. This could delay your kitchen remodel a bit as the manufacturer will need to send replacements. Manufacturer backorders do happen occasionally as well.

    • TIP: While you are waiting for your cabinets to arrive, start preparing your temporary kitchen or easy to prepare meals (if you are also ordering custom countertops).
    • TIP: Please have cabinet hardware in your possession before your cabinet installation date, otherwise we will not be able to install.

Kitchen Remodel Installation

Many people aren’t really sure exactly what takes place during an installation. The most important thing I can tell  you is that this is a PROCESS, not an EVENT. Keeping that in mind will put your expectations in the right place and allow for a more enjoyable remodeling experience.

6. Installation is Scheduled

It is not necessary that you be home during the entire installation process, but you will be required to be there to let the team in and at the end of the process for the final walk through so that you can verify the job is completed to your standards and sign the final paperwork. Please note that because unforeseen issues can arise, it could change the install date, so keep this in mind when deciding to use vacation days or take off work for the entire process.

7. Cabinet Installation

Installations are typically completed within 2 days, depending on size of kitchen. Please note that we do not connect or disconnect plumbing for appliances. Our installers are not certified plumbers, so take care of this beforehand.

  • NOTE: Door and drawer fronts will typically be crooked and not lined up during installation. They will fix this at the end of the process.
  • NOTE: There will be dust, debris, and trash. Your installer will do their best to limit this, but is a part of the process. A good installer will clean up at the end of each day.

8.Countertop Template

When your cabinet installation is completed, your countertops can be templated. The installer will let your designer know what date the cabinet installation is being done so that templating can be set up. It could take up to 2 weeks to get your template done depending on which countertops you’re getting. Your sinks and faucets will need to be in your possession and all cabinets must be attached to the walls in order for this step to take place.

  • NOTE: Because templating cannot be done until every cabinet is installed in it’s final position, if any of your cabinets were damaged in transit, this can delay this step.

9. Countertop Installation

Time frames can vary depending on the countertop you’ve chosen for your kitchen remodel. In Stock granite can be installed within 1 week. In Stock laminate is installed by kitchen installer during cabinet installation. Custom countertops are installed anywhere from 10 days to 4 weeks. This depends on the season and the schedule of the installers. Be prepared to live without countertops for a month. See our blog on setting up a temporary kitchen. Preparing in advance can make this time much easier and eliminate stress for your family. Sinks and faucets will still need to be connected by a plumber after this step.

10. Backsplash Installation

This typically takes another 2 days.
After Backsplash is installed, you should be complete, unless your installers would be installing your cabinet hardware. If you are getting flooring installation done, that would be your first step before any of this occurs.
That’s about it folks! I hope we’ve covered this process to your liking and that it makes your kitchen remodel go smoother knowing what to expect!

PRO: What Customers Look For In Their Contractor

As you all know, you may have gotten into the remodeling or home improvement business, but ultimately, you’re in the customer service business. Without your customers, your business wouldn’t succeed. That is why it is of the utmost importance that you give your customers what they want, before, during and after they come to you to discuss a project. We deal with customers that are remodeling their homes or businesses all day every day, and after speaking with so many of them, we have a pretty good idea of what they love and hate in working with contractors. If you can apply these qualities to your business, you have a much greater chance of success in the short and long term. Find out what they are below!
Kitchen Cabinets-Shop-Ad

Responsiveness

From the first time a customer gets your contact information and reaches out to you for a quote, they are paying close attention to the time that it takes for you to respond. I don’t think that expectations are too high here. They understand that you run a business, but they also understand that they’re trying to give you business. Taking days (or longer) to respond to an inquiry could easily loose you a job. If they still give you a shot, it could be harder to win the bid. If you’re busy, simply give them a quick call or email, letting them know that you got their information and please give them x amount of time to get back in touch. They will appreciate this, trust us.

Reliability

Reliability is a top priority at all stages of the process, but it starts in the estimate/quoting stage. You don’t know how many times we’ve heard about contractors that are coming out to do an in home estimate, that give a 1 pm-4 pm time frame that they’ll be there. That is a very large window and in the busy world we live in, could prove difficult for your potential customers to keep that time frame free. Our suggestion? Schedule quotes during times that you do not have other jobs going on. Early in the morning, over a lunch period, or at the end of your day are all great times. Schedule a time, and show up for it, on time.
That being said, reliability is even more important when you get the job. Your word is your bond. If you say you’ll be here from x – x on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, you need to be there. Emergencies happen, yes. But good business owners do everything in their power to keep their commitments to their customers first, and work the rest out around them.

Accurate Estimates

estimate
We get it, unforeseen issues often arise. There is no way around that sometime. Outside of these circumstances, however, your pricing should be transparent. Make sure the client understands the breakdown of the quote and they have a copy of it. If more work arrises in a certain area, they will feel comfortable knowing how those costs relate to your original estimate. The worst thing you can do is to under quote to get a job, and then increase the price after you’ve started. First of all, that is just dishonest business. Secondly, they will tell their friends. Third, collecting payment could prove more difficult. Get a solid pricing structure built to eliminate any confusion. Let them know the process up front of what will happen if unexpected problems do arise. Transparency is key.

Communication

Do you want to properly communicate? Then I suggest you over communicate. When your dealing with peoples homes or businesses, there is typically no issue too small to double check on. For example, if you need to put a new outlet in a bathroom, but the wall they want it on prevents it from going in, don’t just stick the outlet somewhere else. Give them a call and see where THEY would like it to go. Facetime or Skype are great tools to video chat if you need to show something specific. Taking this time up front to double check with the customer before making a decision could save you rework and frustration in the future. If they don’t like the choice that you made, or if it won’t work with other design or furniture choices that they’ve already made, you could have to redo it, which we know you don’t want.
shop-ad-bathroom-tile
If you’ll be running late, let them know. If you need to reschedule, call as soon as possible and not 30 minutes before you’re scheduled to arrive. If a product is out of stock and you need to make a substitution, let them know. What may seem trivial to you may not be trivial to them. Following this guideline leads to happy customers, positive reviews, repeat business and referrals. That leads to more money and a long lasting business.

Quality

home improvement contractor louisville cincinnati
This goes without being said (for most) but we want to say it anyway. Do your best. Always. Don’t cut corners to save time or materials. Don’t expect that the customer won’t know the difference. Handle their products with care. I’ve heard many times that a contractor chipped or cracked a cabinet during installation but didn’t share it with the customer, or fix it. Only later did they see and they were not happy. If you accidentally cut into crown moulding or a baseboard, fix it. Again, you may think it’s trivial, but to a customer, it says shotty work. Lack of pride in work. Don’t be that person. Handle things with care. Accidents happen, but take responsibility if they do. Almost anything can be fixed. If it can’t, then do the right thing. Trust us, it will pay off in the long term.

How To Install a Quartz Vanity Top & Undermount Sink

Hi! I’m Allie and I’m here at Builders Surplus. Today, I’m going to show you how to install your own under-mount sink and vanity top on a bathroom vanity. The products that we’re going to be using are:

Click picture for more INFO!

Step 1: Add Silicon to Vanity Top

Flip over vanity top so that it lays face down. Be careful, as it can be heavy. You will then fill the caulking gun with the kitchen & bath silicon (can be purchased in either of our locations). You will then apply a bead of silicon to the outer edge of the sink opening. You don’t want to put too much, but do apply a generous amount.
[bscolumns class=”one_half”]

Step 2: Apply Under Mount Sink

The next step will be to take your under mount sink and lay it face down on the opening that you have just covered in silicon. Do your best to make sure it lines up as evenly as possible. We are going to give it some pressure for just a couple of minutes. This is to let it adhere better to the silicon. *Optional: You may use 2 of the included clamps on opposite ends of the sink for additional support if you do not have 24 hours to let it dry face down. You will need to screw them in the pre-drilled holes securely. If you let it dry for 24 hours, using these clamps are not required.*

Step 3: Secure Faucet to Vanity

Now that you sink is secured to your vanity top, you are ready to attach your faucet. First, you will take the washer and screw off of your faucet. Take bottom of the faucet through the center, pre-drilled hole in your vanity top. You will then take your washer and slide it over top of the brass pole on the bottom of the faucet. Then, take your screw and screw it on to the brass pole as well. You can hand tighten this, or use a wrench, whatever you feel most comfortable with. Now that we have your vanity top and sink fully put together, we will now apply it to the vanity.

Step 4: Apply Vanity Top to Bathroom Vanity

Now that we are ready to adhere the completed vanity top to vanity, you will need to pull out your caulking gun and kitchen & bath silicon. Apply a thick bead of silicon to all 4 sides of the bathroom vanity. Now that we are done preparing the vanity, you will most likely need to find someone to help you get the vanity top on. They can be heavy, and you need to make sure you can lift it high enough that the faucet pipes will clear the back of the bathroom vanity. You will align it as best you can. Let it adhere for 24 hours before moving it again.

There you have it! A perfectly functional bathroom vanity with a new vanity top and under mount sink. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and run that water with pride! You’re now a DIY Dominator! Check back weekly for more great articles, DIY’s and How-To’s from the Builders Surplus team!
