Your Guide to Waterproof Flooring!

Introduction to Waterproof Flooring

In today’s world, homeowners are constantly seeking ways to improve the functionality and durability of their living spaces while maintaining a stylish and modern aesthetic. One of the most significant aspects to consider when designing or remodeling a home is the flooring. With a variety of options available, waterproof flooring has emerged as an increasingly popular choice for many households. This type of flooring provides numerous benefits, including resistance to water damage, easy maintenance, and durability in high-traffic areas. Whether you’re on a tight budget, have young children or pets, or simply want a long-lasting and low-maintenance flooring solution, waterproof flooring is an ideal choice. In this blog post, we will explore the two main waterproof flooring options – luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate – and help you understand their unique features, histories, and benefits. By the end of this post, you will have the knowledge needed to make an informed decision about the best waterproof flooring solution for your home.

Waterproof your floor

Two Main Waterproof Flooring Options

When it comes to selecting waterproof flooring, there are two primary options that cater to different preferences and requirements. Understanding the unique features and benefits of each option will help you make the best choice for your home.

a. Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVT or LVP)

Luxury Vinyl Flooring, also known as Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) or Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), is a highly versatile and durable flooring option made from multiple layers of PVC vinyl. LVT and LVP are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural materials, such as hardwood or stone, while providing the added benefits of water resistance, easy installation, and low maintenance. Luxury vinyl flooring is ideal for homeowners who want the look and feel of natural materials without the high cost or susceptibility to water damage.

b. Waterproof Laminate

Waterproof laminate is an innovative flooring option that offers the benefits of traditional laminate flooring while incorporating enhanced water resistance. Unlike standard laminate flooring, which is only water-resistant, waterproof laminate features a surface that is impervious to water, making it suitable for areas prone to spills or moisture. However, it is important to note that only the surface of waterproof laminate is waterproof, and water damage can still occur if moisture seeps into the cracks or underneath the flooring. Waterproof laminate is a good option for those seeking an affordable, stylish, and moderately water-resistant flooring solution.

By comparing the features and benefits of luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate, you can determine the best waterproof flooring option for your specific needs and preferences.

Water proof Laminate

WATERPROOF LAMINATE

Comparing Laminate and Luxury Vinyl Flooring

When choosing between laminate and luxury vinyl flooring, it’s essential to understand their differences in terms of composition, durability, water resistance, and other factors. By examining these differences, you can make an informed decision about the best waterproof flooring solution for your home.

a. Material Composition

Laminate flooring is composed of multiple layers, with its primary layer (the core) made of high-density fiberboard. This provides laminate flooring with rigidity and strength. On the other hand, luxury vinyl flooring is made primarily of PVC vinyl, which makes it dimensionally stable and flexible. Learn more about laminate vs. luxury vinyl flooring in our blog post.

b. Water Resistance

While waterproof laminate has a water-resistant surface, only the surface is waterproof. If water penetrates the cracks or seeps underneath the flooring, damage can occur. Luxury vinyl flooring, in contrast, is entirely waterproof, making it a more suitable option for areas prone to moisture or spills. Discover more about waterproof flooring options on our blog.

c. Durability and Maintenance

Both laminate and luxury vinyl flooring are durable and low-maintenance options. However, luxury vinyl flooring is generally more resistant to dents, scratches, and fading caused by sunlight exposure, making it a more robust choice for high-traffic areas and households with children or pets. Read our blog post on the durability of luxury vinyl flooring for more information.

d. Appearance and Cost

Laminate flooring can closely mimic the appearance of real hardwood floors or slate at a lower cost, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners. Luxury vinyl flooring also offers a wide range of design options that closely resemble natural materials, often at a competitive price point. Explore our blog on affordable flooring options for more insights.

e. Environmental and Health Factors

Laminate flooring is considered an environmentally friendly choice due to its composition, which often includes recycled materials. Additionally, some laminate flooring options are resistant to chemicals and burns, providing added safety benefits. Luxury vinyl flooring, on the other hand, offers built-in soundproofing and often doesn’t contain harmful chemicals that can impact indoor air quality. Check out our blog post on eco-friendly flooring choices for more information.

By comparing laminate and luxury vinyl flooring across these key factors, you can make a well-informed decision about the best waterproof flooring option to suit your specific needs, budget, and design preferences.

5 Renovation Mistakes You Cannot Afford To Make

Anyone who has watched HGTV has seen plenty of renovation mistakes. Any renovation is an undertaking–ask every contractor and every homeowner that has been part of a remodel.  From the accidents that can occur to the ever-growing budget, taking on a reno project requires time, dedication, sweat, and patience.  From our experts to you, we have come up with the list of five renovation mistakes you cannot afford to make!
Home Renovation Free Download Banner

Low-Balling the Budget

Drywall Renovation Mistakes
Surprises are going to happen. Sometimes they are good: like finding original hardwood floors underneath the carpet in pristine condition. Sometimes they are horrifying: like finding asbestos in your home’s walls. While installing backsplash, you might damage the wall and have to replace some of the drywall. Peeking inside the drywall, you could find electrical issues. Then, the next thing you know, you’re dealing with more than just installing backsplash. We suggest setting aside 15% of the total project cost (potentially more for older homes) for unexpected expenses. This is your safety net in the event that unforeseen issues occur. This will give you peace of mind knowing that you won’t break the bank at the first sign of the unexpected.

Floor Drains: the Laundry Room Essential

Laundry Room Drain Mistake
This is one of the renovation mistakes that you may not consider. A laundry room drain is required by code in most areas, but some people still omit it. If there is ever a break in your washing machine hose, you’ll flood your house. A floor drain directs the water into your home’s main drain system. And please, do not try a DIY installation. This can turn into another one of our renovation mistakes.  You will absolutely need a professional plumber, but again, you’ll have peace of mind, as flood insurance is not covered by most basic homeowner’s insurance plans.

Granite, Granite, Granite

Kitchen Design Trends
Of course, it is popular, but granite isn’t the only option for the kitchen.  Renovators could choose a different material for the countertops that can save tons of money in the kitchen!  Our non-granite picks: butcher block, plate steel, or a nice laminate for those who don’t necessarily have the budget for premium marble or granite. Explore the options that will work best for your family to avoid regret down the road. Don’t break your budget trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Hidden Gems

Tile Floor Remodel
Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.  A bathroom membrane system (which goes under tile) prevents popping and cracking, and keeps water from getting into the substructure. Think about it: If you’re spending $15,000 on a bathroom, spend an extra $1,000 to ensure you’ll never have a mold problem. This is one of those renovation mistakes that could end up costing big bucks down the line.

Floored: Ultimate Renovation Mistakes

Beautiful Hallway
Most contractors typically buy 20% extra flooring since it is prone to cuts and breakage during installation. There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to find an exact match if you need to order more during a long remodeling project.  Most retailers often let you return unopened boxes for a refund, so you shouldn’t get stuck with too much material.  It’s also nice to have extra in case of damage down the road. If you suffer and water damage (especially in the kitchen) or a pet scratches deeply or has an accident that stains, you’ll be glad you did.

The Guide to Replacement Windows

In this post, we'll discuss how to get replacement windows, from start to finish.

There are many homeowners that overlook their windows. Where it may seem like a more boring feature of a house, I can assure you that it is not.

They do more than just provide a pretty view and let you enjoy that natural sunlight every day. They can increase or decrease your curb appeal, home value, or overall comfort and function of your home.

Maintenance and proper installation are key, but at the end of the day, old windows often just need to be replaced.

Today, we'll go through the steps on what you can do as a homeowner to make sure your windows continue to do what they do best - Shine!

Do I Need Replacement Windows?

This is question our window installation team is often asked. How do I actually know if I need to replace all my windows? Here are a few simple things you can do to find this answer:

  • Do all your windows open and close properly? Remember that windows are another exit way in case of a fire or a similar emergency and you want to be able to utilize them for fresh air!
  • If air leaks in, out, or around the window. This is where efficiency comes in. If there is a passage for air to come in and leave, then money is literally flying out of the window. No one likes high utility bills or inconsistent levels of comfort in their home.
  • Notice any condensation or fogging that occurs on or between the glass? They're not working properly.
  • Appearance wise, chipping, deterioration, or water stains on or around the window. To put it simply, stain equals water damage equals mold.
  • Outdated style or style that does not blend with the rest of the house. Windows shouldn't stick out in a negative way. You'd be surprised what new windows can do for the look of your home!

How Much Do Windows Cost?

Window costs range wildly depending on who you’re using. That’s why Builders Surplus focuses so much on providing all of the options that homeowners would need at a price significantly lower than the competition (Does 40% off sounds good?).

For a standard sized home, you can get quoted from one big box window provider nearly $10,000 (or more!)

At Builders Surplus, you can get an entire house of white vinyl windows – including installation – For only $3,600!

See how important it is to not take the first quote?

What are the Options for Replacement Windows?

When replacing your windows, you need to think about a few things:

  1. Style
  2. Color
  3. Material
  4. Energy Efficiency

In terms of style, you’ve got several options.

Casement Windows:

Casement windows feature one hinged sash that swings out, welcoming the breeze in. These windows are coveted for their clean, uncluttered views and effortless operation.

Casement Window

Awning Windows:

Awning windows are hinged at the top and open out like a casement. They’re often placed above or below other windows – and over doors – for extra ventilation and light.

Double-Hung Windows:

Double-hung windows have two sliding sashes providing efficient ventilation. Raise the lower sash to allow in a cool breeze. Lower the upper sash to pull hot air from the ceiling outside.

Single-Hung Windows:

Single-hung windows offer the same timeless style as double-hung windows but only the bottom sash is movable.

Single Hung Windows

Sliding Windows:

A sliding panel allows for easy operation – an ideal choice for difficult-to-reach areas.

Bay or Bow Windows:

Bay and bow windows are combinations of windows that reach out into the world. Even with limited wall space, they allow you to have more windows to capture the view.

Special Shapes:

Special Shape windows are available in rectangular, curved and angled. They can be used by themselves, as an accent or with other products, providing endless design possibilities.

Window Materials:

You can typically find 3 types of window materials: Vinyl, Wood, or Aluminum.

Wood
For centuries, wood was the go-to material for window frames. However, as technology has evolved other materials have slowly begun to replace this natural material.

Despite the growing number of synthetic options, many people still like the look and feel of wood. Wood can be a strong and warm material that provides adequate insulation and strong aesthetic benefits. You can paint, stain or otherwise customize wood as well.

The negative side of wood is that it’s less resilient to the elements. Water can lead to rot over time and sunlight or heat can eventually create unsightly cracks and damage. Additionally, the best quality wood is on the more expensive end of window frame materials.

Fiberglass
One of the synthetic frame options that’s replacing wood is fiberglass. This increasingly popular material is a durable option that is resilient to weather and household use. This material also looks great on both the inside and outside of your house. It comes in a number of colors and styles that can fit your home.

Aluminum
Aluminum window frames are not the best choice for the Northeast. Although this material is inexpensive, strong, durable and able to be painted whatever color you need, it doesn’t insulate well. Although popular in warmer climates, the metal conducts heat out the frame. This can hurt your heating bill and nullify any energy-efficient glass you’re installing.

Vinyl
Modern vinyl frames are designed to withstand the impact of harsh UV light on them over time. Vinyl has emerged as one of the most popular frame options. It’s a relatively durable and inexpensive option that comes in a wide variety of colors and styles. the biggest benefit of vinyl is how much insulation it can provide.

Although vinyl frames are low maintenance and can help insulate your window, they are not as strong as many other materials and can’t be painted.

Use this information to inform a discussion with your replacement window technician about the best window frame material for you and your house.

Window Color:

You have a few options of window color if you're getting custom order windows. Most in stock options are going to come in basic white, but you can get trendy black frames, tan frames or cream colored frames as well!

Energy Efficiency:

If you're interested in getting rebates for your windows, then energy star rated windows are for you! This will also do a great job at keeping your air in, and the elements out! It can decrease energy use and allow you to get more bang for your buck! Most windows are offered with Energy Star Options, so just ask!

Where to Get Replacement Windows?

We'll be honest, you can get windows at many places. But, what you want to look for in your window provider are these 5 things:

  1. Selection - Do they have what you need or want in stock or through special order?
  2. Price - What is the price like compared to the competition
  3. Quality - Are these windows their bottom level offer or will they actually last for 20 years?
  4. Service - Getting windows ordered and installed is a process. Only work with someone who is going to treat you right! This is a large purchase after all!
  5. Installation Team - Most people would have no idea where to start installing their own windows (and it's not a very good idea either!) You also shouldn't have to find your own window contractor. Find a retailer that offers window installation.

Luckily for you, Builders Surplus offers ALL of these things, which makes us the #1 in Louisville and Cincinnati for new construction or replacement windows. Just schedule your FREE Windows Estimate to get started!

Who can Install Replacement Windows?

We can! Seriously. There are a number of professional installers on our team that would be happy to help you with your replacement windows.

See, we know how important it is to do perform this task the right away. If you're not too careful, you may hire some random dude named Jim who says he knows what he's doing, but in the end, you'll be miserable trying to manage the project, make sure it's done correctly, and making sure that it's completed on time.

If you're CONFIDENT in installing your own windows, then go for it! You'll save money. But if not, it's a very bad idea. You can cause water damage, mold and lots of additional problems with a bad window installation. This will cause you money and stress down the road.

Rest assured that your windows are installed perfectly and without error by letting the professionals handle it at Builders Surplus! Interested? Contact one of our professionals today and Schedule your FREE In-Home Window Estimate!

Timeless Kitchens Vs. Trendy Kitchens

The Trendy VS. Timeless kitchens decision has always been one to consider before remodeling or building a new kitchen.

Trends are fun, they’re hip, they’re new and fresh! BUT… will you still like them 10 years from now. THAT is the question.

Timeless kitchens stand the test of time. We all know that our style and taste will change over the years, but how do we create a space (especially one this expensive) that will change with us?

What elements will allow a quick switch, and what’s here to stay? Those are the questions to ask yourself before you decide which type of kitchen design you’re going for.

How do you achieve the perfect balance of trendy or timeless kitchens? That’s what we all want to know. And luckily for you, that’s what I’m going to show you how to do; achieve a timeless look, and still find elements that are on trend!

What is a Trendy Kitchen?

A trendy kitchen is one that uses the design elements of the moment, whatever is in style right now. As we all know, trends come and go. That’s why crushed velvet and chocker necklaces are back in style.

The 90’s is upon us again! But before this year, no one would have been caught dead in them, as they were clearly out of fashion. Clothes are one thing. They are typically $100 or less, and can be switched up every single day. You’re not stuck with one piece you have to wear for the next 20 years, so it’s ok to be trendy when it comes to clothing.

What’s no ok? Being stuck with a kitchen you stop liking 5 years after you spent 10 grand.

Sometimes, trends CAN be timeless styles as well, but if you want truly timeless kitchens in your future, you’ll be selective about which ones you choose to incorporate.

What’s a good example of the moment? Geometric tile or metallic tile. They are super hot and very in, but do you really want bright metallics or trapezoids on your backsplash for the next decade. That’s a question to seriously consider. Unique shapes like arabesque tile can also be seen as a trendy choice. It used to be trendy about 30 years ago, and has recently come back, but what about the time in between? Don’t be caught there.

Bright or unique colors can often be trending, and while I’m a HUGE fan of color, I don’t suggest getting cabinets painted the color of the moment. Those will get real old, real quick. If it’s your favorite color and has been for a decade? GO FOR IT! I’m all about personal style, but just not wishy-washy trendy style.

Schedule Your FREE Kitchen & Bath Design Appointment!

What should you not go trendy on? The big stuff, or the hard stuff to remove, in my opinion.Cabinets for one are the single most expensive part of your kitchen. You NEED to like them for a few decades. Don’t mind painting them? Then you have so many more options over the years! Countertops can be trendy if you get a funky color, so just make sure you love it if that’s the case. Backsplash is also hard to remove without damaging cabinets or countertops, so be weary of that as well.

Where can you go trendy? Lighting is a great place to start, as it can easily be replaced. Hardware, faucets, sinks or accent pieces are all great ways to stay on trend without compromising your timeless kitchens potential.

What are timeless kitchens?

Timeless kitchens are anything that won’t go out of style any time soon. They are styles that you’ll love for years and years to come, which is exactly what we should all be looking for in a remodel.

What makes timeless kitchen timeless?

Timeless Kitchens Use Neutral Colors.

Neutrals can often be trendy, but they never really go out of style. One color may take over for a few years, but you’ll typically not ever really get sick of it. White, grey, taupe, or even black are you top neutrals for cabinets. Stick with one of those and you’ll be very satisfied long term.

Stained wood cabinets are kind of trendy in my opinion. It would seem like they would be timeless, but stained cabinets (unless it’s a taupe stain/paint combo) are completely OUT right now, so I guess that answers that.

Subway Tile Is Always In Style

Subway tile is a great backsplash due to it’s longevity. It has been in styles for what seems to be a century. There are so many colors, sizes (3×6, 4×16, and 2×4) as well as materials such as glass, hand crafted porcelain and even metal, that you can ALWAYS find something you love. Most buyers don’t hate it, so it’s great for resell purposes as well. It goes with virtually any cabinet style.

Stone Countertops Survive The Test of Time

Stone countertops CAN be trendy, like we mentioned above, such as bright orange or blue quartz. It takes a special person to love them for decades. But overall, granite or quartz is a win. Especially whites, greys or tan combos. They go with a ton of colors, so even if you paint your cabinets, you won’t need new tops. That’s a win in my book! Wood and concrete can be trendy, and while you may like them for many years, stone is typically a safer bet. Add them in small areas like shown below.

Shaker is so Chic

One cabinet style that is always in is the shaker style. Clean lines are never out. Slab doors can be very modern, and some raised or flat panel can look outdated pretty easily. Shaker style cabinets are a wonderful style to always keep you on the right side of kitchen design.

The Best & Worst of 2017 Interior Design

Our Favorite Interior Design Trends:

Mini Subway Tile:

Mini subway tile has seen a huge boom in 2017 interior design. The 2x4 tile (typically 3x6 or 4x12) comes in a mesh back tile format, so they go up so much quicker, as they're foot by foot sheets. This has made installing them a breeze, and homeowners love the dramatic look they bring!

As 2017 comes to a close, let’s evaluate which interior design trends were hero’s and which were zero’s.

Geometric Inspired Decor:

Geometric patterns can be found all over 2017 interior design. From wallpaper patterns, to cabinet hardware, faucets and more, this is the go-to pattern of the moment.

Brass Fixtures:

Brass is not the outdated finish it once was! It’s making a comeback and I for one love it. Check the bathroom above to see how classy gold can be when done the right way. Pair it with neutrals or bold colors for a modern or eclectic look.

Patterned Tile:

Patterned tile was one of my favorite interior design trends of 2017. Some are subtle, like the one shown above, and some are much more bold. You can use them on a backsplash, a bathroom floor, in a laundry room, or anywhere that you want to make a statement! This trend is here to stay for a while.

Bold Colors:

This look is refreshing as solid white has been in style for quite some time it feels like. Bold colored cabinets like this are in at the moment and I love it! Whatever color makes your heart happy, you can splash throughout your home and know that you’re right on track with the current styles! Cabinet companies like Wellborn are making it easier than ever with their ColorInspire collection. The sky is the limit!

Natural Stone:

Natural stone in your home gives it a cozy, old world feel. You can use large stone as shown above, ledge stone panels, or brick tile to achieve this look. Use it on your fireplace, an accent wall, home exterior, or on columns to really warm your space up.

Ceilings that POP:

Ceiling detail was IN for 2017! Whether it’s unique colors, large beams, or intricate tile work as shown above, 2017 homes had us looking up more than ever before! Get creative and make your house your own!

Interior Design Trends that Are OUT:

Solid White Spaces:

I love white rooms as much as the next girl. They’re classic and clean. However, this trend has been a little played out in the last few years. It’s starting to get very sterile and mundane. Get ready to punch it up in 2018 with white PAIRED with bold colors to break up the space and add some flare.

Copper Fixtures:

Copper had a good run. It was the alternative to your standard chrome, brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze. It was used as decorative accents, kitchen sinks and more. But it seems that it’s day may be over. Will brass be taking it’s place? It sure seems that way! What do you think of 2017’s interior design trends, for better or worse? What do you hope to see in 2018? Let us know in the comments below!

Create a Timeless Style You Won’t Get Tired Of

Everyone should aim to achieve a timeless style. We all know how expensive and time consuming remodeling and decorating can be, so you should try and do them only once every blue moon. Here are 5 ways to achieve timeless style in your home! Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

Timeless Style Means Staying Away From “Trends”

Trendy is the opposite of timeless. Trends come and go, while timeless style lasts decades. That’s not to say that elements can’t be “In Style” but also be classic, like white cabinets or subway tile. These things have always been popular, but come to the forefront in design some years more than others. Themes, bright colors, certain patterns or shapes can be trendy items. In the end, it’s YOUR home, so if you love it and it’s on trend, don’t let that stop you. What you want to stay away from is remodeling to the design trends of the moment, just because it’s popular. As your 90’s wardrobe will tell you, we all go through phases. Make sure your kitchen or bathroom aren’t one of them. Timeless Style Wood Kitchen

Incorporate History

Incorporating history can be a great way to achieve timeless style. The styles of the past influence design in the present, so adding elements of greek architecture like arches and columns will always be timeless. Adding vintage pieces and antiques is another way to carry your look through decades. Antiques get better with age, so you won’t have to worry about growing out of them! Crown moulding and nice trim will work well to create a timeless look.

Research your style

Ultimately, the most important part of creating a timeless style is to make sure that it’s YOUR style. Neutral Is Key

Unless you have a life long love of the color aqua (like I do!) It’s a good idea to keep your main colors neutral. Your kitchen cabinets for instance, are something that is difficult and expensive to replace. If you go with neutral colors like white, grey or even black for your cabinets (which are also in style) you can replace other options if you ever feel bored and can rest assured that most of your choices will still coordinate with your cabinets. Countertops are similar, although easier to replace than cabinets. Choosing a bold orange quartz countertop might be modern and cool today, but you don’t know how you’ll feel down the road. Or, you could love it forever. Again, knowing yourself and your style is key.

Let Fabrics & Accent Pieces Go Bold

When your main items or walls are neutral, you can let your fabrics or accent pieces be what brings in color, pattern, texture and personality! You can choose a fun accent tile, paint a wall or add a fun wallpaper, or choose amazing bar stools! These are the things that really bring your design together. If you decide this look is getting old, you simply change them up, and you don’t have to touch those core pieces. You wouldn’t believe what a difference some paint, cabinet hardware or backsplash can do to totally change up the look of a kitchen or bathroom! I hope this has been helpful in your journey to create a timeless style within your home. If you have any more questions, let us know in the comments below!

You’re the one living in this home, so make sure that you follow your gut on things that you believe you’ll like for years to come. Go with colors and decor that make you feel like yourself, that put your at ease and lift your mood. Good interior design should always do that. Home Design Trends at Homearama

If you’re looking for home design trends, look no further than Homearama. This year’s Homearama was held at Poplar Woods in Goshen Kentucky and it was a truly spectacular event! We’ve already covered blogs on kitchen and bathroom home design trends from Homearama 2017, so this post will cover all the other spaces of the house that you can use to create the masterpiece that is your home.

This Year’s Top Home Design Trends

LIVING SPACES

High Ceilings and Ceiling Detail

The first thing I noticed in terms of home design trends at this year’s Homearama was the incredible ceiling detail! Here are a few below, but there were so many more. From beams, tile, distressed wood, and intricate trey ceilings, you found yourself constantly looking up. It’s amazing the way a high ceiling seems to add so much more space to the room – not that these rooms were lacking square footage!

Built In Cabinets

I love the look of built in cabinets. It’s one home design trend that can really stand the test of time. It’s a great way to add storage to your space, frame a fireplace, or add a nice furniture style element to a room that may be lacking it. The decorative pieces that you’re able to showcase in built in cabinets also lets you add a touch of personality.

Tiled Fireplaces

There were fireplaces in virtually every homearama home. Some even had more than one! While brick fireplaces or standard wooden mantles may have cut it in the past, that’s no longer the case. The latest home design trend is tiled fireplaces. From ledge stone and intricate mesh back tile shown below to marble and large format, the choice is up to you! No matter what you choose, it will add a unique touch to your home.   ledgestone fireplace home design trends

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is one of my absolute favorite home design trends, although I can’t seem to convince my husband of it’s awesomeness. It’s such a beautiful way to add texture, pattern, color and style to a space. Your furnishings could be completely neutral or standard, but add some fun wallpaper and you’re room has upped it’s cool factor.

FLOORING

Rich, Rustic Hardwood Flooring

We saw so many beautiful floor coverings this year! One flooring home design trend that really stuck out was the hardwood floors. It was mostly mid toned to dark, with lots of “cracks”, knots and character in it. The modern rustic design style is still very much on trend, and the flooring proved that. If you can’t afford natural hardwood, there are some amazing laminates and LVT flooring which offer the same rustic look! hardwood flooring home design trends   hardwood flooring home design trends

Wood Look Tile

I love wood look tile! Wood is such an amazing material, but it just doesn’t work well for bathrooms or laundry rooms due to it’s lack of water resistance. Wood look tile is the perfect compromise!  The wood look tile’s below resemble real wood so closely but they are so much more durable and suited perfectly for the spaces in which they’re placed. You can barely tell they’re tile! wood look tile home design trends   wood look tile home design trends

Large Format Tile

Large format tile was definitly a notable home design trend this year, from flooring, to shower surrounds, kitchen backsplash and fireplace tile, it was EVERYWHERE! Large format tile is anything that is 15″ or larger on any side. It can be heavy and difficult to install, though, so make sure you consult a professional before trying it yourself! large format tile home design trends

DOORS

Iron and/or Arched Front Doors

Iron and arched front doors are definitly in style. They are a great investment as they can give you an awesome return on investment upon resale. They are also STUNNING and give a great first impression for your home. Not to mention the iron doors are great for keeping intruders OUT! iron doors home design trends

French Doors

French patio doors are gorgeous. The glass lets the light rain in and brings the outdoors inside your home. This make space look brighter and bigger. I don’t know about you, but even if I’m inside, I still want to feel like I’m outside, and these doors do just that. We saw so many french door patio sets at homearama, making it a new home design trend to emulate! patio doors home design trends

Two Panel Interior Doors

6 panel doors are not exactly a hot item. The home design trend for interior doors is definitly two panel, with arched or raised detail. This makes your home feel more custom, not builder grade. You can upgrade your interior doors for a relatively small price and it can make a huge difference on the interior vibe in your home. We have TONS of doors like this available for custom order, so ask us about them for your home! interior door home design trends

Sliding Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors have been hot home design trends the last two years, and this year is no exception. However, one thing I did notice was that it was less about the stained wooden doors, and more about painted or more modern style doors with glass. While both styles are still very popular, it seems that this style is moving towards modern rustic instead of simply rustic. Either way, I love sliding barn doors! Check out the options here! sliding barn doors home design trends   Those are our favorite home design trends for 2017 and we were happy to share them with you! What’s your favorite?

Types of Molding and Why You Need Them

You know you’re just about done with a remodel when it’s time to start installing trim/molding. As we like to call it, you have begun the “finishing stages,” which unfortunately are the most tedious, attention-to-detail tasks that usually end up being very time consuming. But, this is for good reason — think of it as a blending process. Today, I’d like to discuss several types of molding and when and where to use them!

Scribe Molding

Scribe is essentially a thin strip of wood that runs along the edges of your cabinet to cover gaps, blemishes, and other inconsistencies where the cabinet meshes against the wall or the ceiling. It’s usually straight on one end and can be curved fit the contour of the cabinet. It’s used as a finishing touch and quite often makes the job look complete when installed correctly. Having gaps or scuff marks here and there may not seem like a biggie to larger remodels, but if they can be prevented or in this case, solved, the product will look near perfect.

Crown Molding

A very popular finishing touch that’s installed at the top edge of cabinets (hence, the name), but unlike scribe, crown moulding has an abundance of decorative options that can cater to any style or design. You could go with something simple, a piece with a few beveled edges, or something a little more gaudy, with elaborate, inlaid designs. Obviously, the the more intricate the design, the more expensive the crown is going to be. As far its importance, it’s mainly to bring a more sophisticated look to your design. And trust me, it works.

Baseboard Molding

Probably the most important piece on this list, base molding is used to hide the gaps between flooring/tile and the walls encasing it. That is its main function, but as you can see, it definitely adds a certain decor and can be seen as a beautiful transition from floor to the wall. It hides the cracks, gaps, and drywall fringes and give a modern touch to the whole look.

Quarter Round Molding

It’s only fitting that this type is mentioned next after baseboards because they compliment each other. Yes, baseboards are seen as the transition, but installing quarter-round — which is almost like scribe, but thicker — is installed at the very bottom of the your baseboards, so it hides that gap AND the possible nail holes. Functional and decorative, quarter round is a must do if you’re looking for that perfect look.

molding

Chair Rail Molding

This piece of molding acts purely as a decorative and is usually accompanied by wainscoting — wooden paneling that lines the lower part of the walls of a room — but that’s not always the case. It’s also used to break up paint colors, if one is going for the two-toned look.

Casing

I’ll be honest with you, if your doors or windows don’t have casing on them, it’s going to look weird. Out of place. You might as well take the door off the hinges and use it as a beer pong table. It’d look better. Seriously, though, all jokes aside, casing is a pretty mandatory piece of trim. It doesn’t just enhance the look, it makes it. So, I have to say, if there’s any piece on here that you actually NEED, it’s this one.

molding

There ya go, folks. There’s a few very necessary types of molding that are essential to making your remodel legitimately look complete. I do hope I’ve given you a bit of insight into these finishing touches! And remember if you need a little bit of assistance with planning or want to schedule a free kitchen design consultation, click here! Hope to see you all in the store soon, but until then, be safe and stay blessed!

5 Best Resources to Help Plan Your Home Remodel

Hello, everyone! Hope all is well, and you’ve found some time to go outside and enjoy this beautiful weather we’ve been having. So, I’ll get right to it. Planning can be a pain, right? Aligning schedules, stacking finances, figuring out exactly what you’d like, and then having to plan for something awry to happen because it almost always does for some reason. It’s because it’s such a pain in the butt that it can be easy to stave it off for a few months….sometimes years, especially with something as huge as a home remodel. Well, today I’d like to make that a little bit easier and discuss five resources that will get you well on your way! After all, it is Spring, a time for fresh beginnings and starting anew. Consider this your official banishment from Procrastination Nation. Leave…and never go back.

Houzz this for your Home Remodel?

Okay, you’ll have to excuse me for the horrible pun. I simply could not help myself. Blame the incessant sun rays that I can’t get enough of aka Jack Sparrow Syndrome. Maybe a little less rum, though. Anyway, so, Houzz is absolutely fantastic. Think of ‘Pinterest,’ but with a motivated motif of all things home remodeling and renovation. Which is crazy to think about, really. This industry has grown so rapidly in the past decade that there’s actually a database, if you will, purely for its many factions. Very, very interesting.     home remodel   But, yeah, Houzz is pretty much a growing community of architects, contractors, interior designers, landscapers, and the like that congregate and discuss ideas, share photos, and provide inspiration to all that welcome it. Sign-up is free, of course, and once you’ve made yourself a little profile, you can start perusing around, letting your creativity thrive, so you can start planning your home remodel.

Have I Piqued Your Pinterest?

I’d say about 95.7% of you reading this definitely know what Pinterest is, but in case you’re of the other 4.3%, I’ll tell you. Pinterest is largely a collection of ideas, thoughts, hacks, pictures, recipes, and infographics through a number of categories that work to gain your interest — for  you to pin and repin. It’s an excellent motivator, and an outstanding resource while planning for your home remodel. Truly, there are some epic ideas when it comes to home renovation. I have no doubt that you’ll not only find this site appealing, but extremely informational, as well.   home remodel     Once again, it’s a free sign-up, but I will warn you:  Engaging in this website/app is a time suck. You may sit down, open your laptop, type the appropriate letters in the browser in the afternoon, and the next thing you know it’s eight o’ clock, and you’ve skipped lunch and nearly dinner. Which is a crime.

Golden Honey Ledger Stone Bathroom Tile

Ledger Stone has made a major impact in the tile industry, in my opinion. If you’ve noticed, “look-alike” products continue to gain popularity, and Ledger Stone gained its varsity letters before any of them. The one featured below is a fan-favorite, for sure. It’s gorgeous in any setting, but especially bathrooms and, oddly enough, fireplaces, too. Simply stunning. While it does LOOK amazing in the shower, do let your customers know that it is difficult to clean. It needs to be completely waterproof behind the tile or you will get mold.

So, you can get this stylish, trendy bathroom tile for only $5.99/piece, right here at Builders Surplus. Now, this is one of the priciest product to make this list, but for good reason. If you’re a fan of texture in aesthetics, then this product is for you.

Black Penny Round Mosaic Bathroom Tile

I’m a huge fan of contract in a bathroom, and the Black Penny Round Mosaic bathroom tile is perfect for setting up that kind of style. I’ve always imagined a white floor tile with this product used as a backsplash. It’s timeless. It’s classic. And so eye-appealing. Plus, I’m a huge fan of curvature during any kind of design, so this pattern hits me right in the feels.

Right now, you can get this contrast-maker for only $4.99/sq. ft. One more thing about this, though, is its versatility. Where I’m more inclined to install this bathroom tile as a backsplash, it’s fine for a shower floor, too!

Legend Blanco Large Format Tile

I enjoy the movement in this tile. And it’s a subtle gray, too, ya know? Not too deep, not too light. Just right. Now, this is a Large Format Tile, so the possibilities are pretty much endless, in terms of install. Personally, I think this color belongs on the floor, maybe with a dark vanity top or something of that nature.

As we proceed, you’ll see that these prices really are unmatched, y’all, starting with this one. You can get this Legend Blanco bathroom tile for ONLY $1.99/sq. ft. Heckuva deal, right? Stylish, moderately-neutral, and all for a good price. Come in and seriously get everything without spending everything.

Portland Beige 18×18 Bathroom Tile

Another large format tile, Portland Beige is another one of my favorites due to its tone and color. But, what’s really attractive about this piece is its price. Right now, you can get this tile for only $0.69/sq. ft! That’s less than three quarters, everyone.

Home Value: 5 Easy Ways to Increase It

What’s going on, everyone? I do hope you’re well and enjoying the much-anticipated warm weather. Where it seemed like it was a rather mild winter, it felt like ages to me.  If you’re a summer baby like yours truly, then you literally countdown the days until April or May, where you can enjoy a nice drive with the windows down and music up. Plus, now that it’s warm, we can all start working on the most important asset we have — our home. In this blog post, I’ll discuss five ways to easily increase home value. May the warmth inspire and spark creativity, y’all. Let’s begin!

The Best Ways To Increase Home Value

Focus on the Entry Door

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that curb appeal is a monstrous factor when it comes to home value. The front door simply further emphasizes this incredibly significant factor. Essentially, it pulls the eye in and acts as a main focal point to the entire house. Think about it, when you have guests over, what is the first course of action? Walking through the front door. So, naturally, that’s what the eye is going to be attracted to.     home value   Don’t be afraid to get a little quirky when it comes to your front door, either. Want to make it a crazy-cool color? Do it. Want to splash some sort of design on it? Go ahead. I encourage you to make it your own and let it standout. Because, honestly, it’s going to anyway.   home value

Upgrade the Kitchen

Now, listen, I know those three words can seem a bit vague, and even once it’s broken down, it can still be a bit overwhelming. So for all intensive purposes, I’ll just name two components of a kitchen. Also note that your kitchen is arguably (but who would argue) the most important room in the entire house. Because of this, simply renovating a few things will no doubt increase home value. For sure. Cabinets: You may be surprised to know that simply switching out the cabinets in your kitchen will do wonders as far as aesthetics. Maybe you’re tired of the type of cabinet and color, or you’re like me and get antsy when you’ve staring at the same scenery for far too long. I encourage you to take a good, hard look at your cabinets and see if you’d like to make some changes. Remix it up. home value   Countertops: In my opinion, countertops can make or break a kitchen’s overall look. With this in mind, if you’ve been preparing your meals over, say, formica countertops then I think you’d really enjoy a granite or quartz countertops. They’re both sleek, modern-looking, and the characteristics for both are far more superior — in strength, durability, accident-resistance, and maintenance.   home value

Beautify your Bathroom

Kitchens and baths, y’all, that’s where it’s at for value’s sake. These rooms allow a person to express themselves artistically and make a style their own. Like I mentioned before, don’t be afraid to go above and beyond. After all, IT IS your home. Do what you will. However, if you’re going to be selling in the near future, keep the style one that will appeal to a broad range of buyers. Vanities: A bathroom doesn’t call for as much space as a kitchen does, sure, but I’d be lying if I said that these pieces aren’t essential to your bathroom design. Take the same advice I gave you about your kitchen cabinetry and recreate a different design — use interesting colors, textures, and styles and make things harmoniously blend. home value Vanity tops: Much like your kitchen countertops, a vanity top can make or break the design. Now, if it were me, I’d take a look at our cultured marble tops, in addition to our large selection of vanity tops. We truly have some beautiful colors that will blend nicely with any design. I promise you.

Watch your Windows

Windows may seem like a small aspect in home design, but I’m telling you, replacing the old with the new will greatly increase your home value. At Builders Surplus, we carry Silverline by Andersen windows, and they’re true beauties. Available in different designs and styles, these babies will quite literally make each room brighter.   home value   Another thing I kinda like about windows is that they’re two sides of the same coin. We talked about the importance of curb appeal before, and windows sort of add to that enhanced focus, but they’re also very endearing on the inside, as well.   Plus, if you’re kinda crafty, you can enrich the look and put a beautiful set of moulding around each window, achieving that ‘craftsmen’ style perfectly. Just a little food for thought if you want to really increase home value.     home value

Spruce Up the Outside

This probably goes without saying, but a well-maintained, neat, and even colorful yard is going to get some looks. If you want to increase home value, this is definitely an area I’d focus on. Curb appeal, remember? If your grass is as green as a golf course, there’s a nice blend of trees, flowers, and bushes — all neatly clipped — and everything looks proper and perfect, don’t be surprised to see a car come to a slow crawl, peeking in.   home value     Having a yard that’s pleasing to the eye is going to get you those seriously-this-just-went-on-the-market kind of offers, and who doesn’t want to be in that driver’s seat, no pun intended. Just don’t make it TOO busy, you know what I mean. Keep it nice. Keep it neat. Keep it complete.   home value     I hope these five things gave you a bit of insight and, hopefully, some inspiration to make some renovations to increase home value. Change isn’t all bad, people! Remember that, and keep on enjoying this weather! Hope to see y’all in here soon, but until then be safe and stay blessed!

Bamboo Flooring Shopper's Guide

bamboo

So, I probably know what you’re thinking. Bamboo? And just when I thought I’ve seen it all. And, honestly, I’m right there with you in that assessment, but bamboo is actually some pretty legitimate stuff we’re talking about. Today, I’d like to talk to you a little bit about some things you should consider when shopping for this awesome, abstract, type of flooring. So buckle in for a bit, and let me learn you a thing or two!

Why Bamboo?

Right? Like, whoever thought of taking this plant and manufacturing it into something that people can actually walk on is definitely on a completely different mental wavelength than I am, but I applaud whoever did it. So…why?

It’s ‘Green’: Well, for one, it’s environmentally-friendly. If you’re anything like us over here at Builders Surplus, that is definitely something to be valued. To put it in comparison, the trees that are used to make hardwood floors can take 20-25 years to reach full maturity. Bamboo, on the other hand, only takes a mere 5-7 years to reach its adolescence. Then it’s ready to go.

Strength: Secondly, it’s stronger than most of the hardwoods you’ll find beneath your feet. I know this can’t be the first time you’ve heard that bamboo is a rock-solid, so imagine that intensifying strength covering your living or dining room. Pretty cool, right?

Durable: This stuff can take a beating. For example, let’s say it’s Christmas, okay, and you and your cousin are playing your version of “Hot Potato,” with a snow globe. Game’s going good and then one of y’all messes up and the globe passes slips through a set of fingers, descending to your brand-new bamboo floors — everything’s in slo-mo — someone may or may not dive for it, I don’t know. The globe hits the bamboo with a loud ‘thud,’ and you fear the worst. Then you look….and nothing. Nothing at all. Yeah, guys, this stuff is like THAT.

Graphite

Where To Put Bamboo

High-Traffic Areas: This type of flooring was literally meant to be installed in those main areas where people congregate or walk through – living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and hallways. Because of its strength and durability, you’ll achieve that same look you did when first laid it down, no matter where you put it. I told y’all. This is some long-lasting stuff, for sure. It doesn’t swell. Or contract.
NO Bathrooms: Okay, now this is some pretty excellent material, for sure, but it’s not superhuman, okay? It’s kryptonite is water, and bathrooms simply hold too much moisture for it. You don’t want those kinds of problems. Trust me.

Frosted Pearl

Who Would Love Bamboo Flooring?

People with Allergies: For all intensive purposes, it’s safe to say that this type of flooring is hypo-allergenic. Meaning, it can’t be penetrated by the usual, common allergens such as pet hair, pollen, dust, and the other crap that makes me want to yank my nose off.
Those Who Hate Cleaning: When I say this stuff is super low-maintenance, I mean it. Literally, all you need is a broom and a vacuum cleaner. But, I guess, if you’d like to get semi-fancy, you can grab a Swiffer broom. To each his own.

Obsidian

Colors of Bamboo

At Builders Surplus, we custom order bamboo flooring. It’s available in a variety of stunning colors, fourteen in total. The pictures that you see throughout are just a glimpse of what we have to offer. From darker tones like ‘Obsidian’ to lighter tones like ‘Frosted Pearl.’

Installation and Specs on Bamboo Flooring

Below is a chart that details the type of installation and some specified specs about bamboo flooring. You’ll notice that the installation isn’t any different than putting down regular hardwood floors. The glueless locking system is extremely easy. It also details some of the warranties, which is obviously pretty important.

Well, folks. What do you think? Pretty interesting stuff, isn’t it? I encourage you to not just take my word for it. Come on in to any of our two locations, and we will gladly give you as much info as you’d like on this outstanding product. Until then, stay safe and be blessed!

Our Favorite Stains For Unfinished Hardwood Floors

If there’s one thing I know, hardwood floors simply give that feel of class, sophistication, and beauty that can only be described as timeless.
Today, I’d like to discuss one of the aspects of unfinished hardwood floors – its versatility. I am, of course, speaking on the fact that it can be stained to a color of your choosing, and in this blog post, we’ll go over a few of my personal favorites that I’ve come across while working for my father at his home remodeling business.

The Product & Its Many Colors

My father holds the brand, Minwax, with the highest regard. In fact, that’s literally the only stain he uses, no matter what the piece. Now, I can go ahead and tell you that this is for good reason. It just coats SO darn well.
To be specific, the product he uses has been coined Minwax Wood Finish™, and it is available in no less than 26 colors. Talk about a variety, right? Sidenote: Where it does coat beautifully with just one application, for best results you should apply two. It will bring out the richness in the color, and you can just thank me later.

Dark Walnut Stain

There’s something about darker hardwood floors that I really appreciate. To me, Dark Walnut brings out the texture in this style of flooring. It’s rich. It’s long-lasting. It exudes that feeling that I mentioned earlier.
And, let me tell ya, if you’re one to open up the windows on a warm, gorgeous days, the way natural light hits this color is simply mesmerizing. Dark tones, bright smiles with these stains. Outstanding.

stain

English Chestnut Stain

Ah, the traditional approach. Whenever I think of a stained floor, this is what comes to mind because it seems like the “tried and true” approach, if I’m being honest.
Not to say that it’s boring or timid in showing its flavor, but it’s just been known to get the job done — which is simply to accentuate the grain of the unfinished hardwood — much like the “Natural” stain color would, if you know what I mean. A bit of a reddish hue, this color works wonders in colonial-style houses. Lovely.

stain

Ipswich Pine Stain

I have to admit, every time I read the color of this stain, I think of the movie, “The Covenant,” an extremely underrated movie about a batch of brothers who are considered descendants of the  “Witches of Ipswich.”
Anyway, sorry for that little tidbit, just sayin’. Back to the blog. This color has a yellowish hue to it that I really admire. It’s nearly like “Natural” because of how light it is, but it exhibits something different, a lovelier feel in my opinion. This stained floor will work wonders underneath darker furniture. Oh, yes.

stain

Jacobean Stain

Ah, my favorite, which is why I saved it for last. Now, remember how I mentioned that I like darker colored hardwood floors? Well, this is IT. No, not the clown. Let’s not go down that road. We’ll stick to these floors.
Number one, how legit is that name? Go ahead and say it, like, three times. Jay-CO-Bean. So cool. I just love how incredibly RICH this color is. The dark swirls, smooth blend of lighter tones, and it’s ability to go anywhere.

stain

Alright, folks, there’s a little insight into some of my favorite stain colors! If it were me, I’d STRONGLY consider the Jacobean if it blends well with the style of your home and everything.
For something a bit lighter, hit up good ole Ipswich, or throw all of my words in the trash and pick from the other 21 colors. But I will say and will suggest once more, Minwax is definitely the way to go. Have fun this Spring, be safe, and stay blessed!

5 Bathroom Styles You Must See Before You Remodel

Okay, before you start the demo phase, which is incidentally my favorite phase, you absolutely positively have to look at these five bathroom styles. Now, I understand that if you have a sledgehammer on deck then you’ve probably (hopefully) already have your design plans in order and you’re quite ready break ground on this bad boy, BUT that doesn’t mean that you can’t allow of a few minor adjustments. Today, I’d like to discuss a few bathroom options, putting everything into perspective in terms of style, including vanities, tops, plumbing, sinks, and tiles.

Traditional Bathroom Styles

The tried-and-true style, as I like to call it. Some call it ordinary, some call it plain, I simply see it for what it is – classic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to the roots without the fancy-shmancy accommodations that some other styles may provide. I’m not knocking other styles, I’m just saying that going the “traditional” route is almost like going to your hometown after a years and years from settling elsewhere. It’s comfortable. It’s safe, and it still provides that warm glow deep in your soul that filters throughout. Simply put, it’s home. And it’s as they say: There’s nothing wrong with going home.

bathroom styles

Modern Bathroom Styles

We’re talking glass showers, sleek sink fixtures, lone freestanding tub, large windows, and as much space as you can manage with this style. The greatest thing about the modern-style is how sleek everything looks. The picture below is actually identified as “modern-minimalist,” and when you get a good look at it, you’ll understand why, but as it is, every element of the bathroom is tasteful, sleek, elegant. It’s easy on color to give away its rich texture. In all of these bathroom styles, this has to be my favorite. Especially since it’s low-key minimalist themed as well. Very sophisticated.

bathroom styles

Hamptons Bathroom Styles

Something I’ve actually very recently been doing a bit of research on, is the Hampton-style. As you can see in the picture below, this style boasts very neutral colors, the majority being white and prides itself on chicness. Subway tile is usually infused in the mix or marble, one of the two. As far as the vanity goes, the shaker style is what’s best for the Hampton look. Usually, again, white to emphasis it’s standout, bright aura. Another added note with this style is the sconce lighting that usually hangs on either side of the mirror, or in the middle. The tapware is usually chrome or nickel-plated. Definitely more of a traditional feel when it comes to the fixtures. Anyhow…I think it’s pretty cool. What do you think?

bathroom styles

Contemporary Bathroom Styles

Similar to the modern style, contemporary brings you an extremely sleek design. Notice how the colors are all very neutral save for one, small accent wall in the background. The fixtures aren’t your common, typical ones, either. They’re fixed to the wall, which completely eradicates any “traditional” style make-up in this design. The look it portrays clearly defines as it a style that lives in the now, in the present, but still establishes room for variation. For example, you could accompany these tones with that of a Hampton-style and still get the same effect, if that makes sense. It’s not my favorite, I admit, but I do appreciate the bold nature of this type of style. For sure.

bathroom styles

Rustic Bathroom Styles

Ah, the rustic look. Who doesn’t like this kind of style is my question. This style of bathroom gives you many options to explore your creativity and allows you to antique some aspects of your bathroom and really push forth that rustic, classically-aged look that I like. In the picture below, I really really like the door style. It’s a craftsman style door setting, but it fits in with the rest of the bathroom. To make a project out of it, you could find an unfinished alder cabinet and reclaim the wood to give it that aged look. This style can usually be found in your country-themed houses, as it really works well with that design. What do you think?

Family Friendly Remodeling Materials

It doesn’t matter if you have a bigger family or a smaller one, accidents are just going to happen. Someone is going to knock over the grape juice all over the kitchen countertops, muddy footprints will trail the floors all the way up to the culprit’s bedroom, someone’s going to neglect the “clean bathroom” chore for weeks at a time, leaving soap scum and grime to everyone’s displeasure, spices will be misplaced or unfortunately found in the fridge, and crumbs will layer the living room floor no matter how many times you vacuum. Families and messes go together like the mop and the broom in the closet down the hallway. It’s inevitable. BUT…there are some remodeling materials that you can use in your renovation that will alleviate some of the stress that these messes bring, some even eradicating them altogether. In this post, we’ll detail some of these remodeling materials, which you’ll undoubtedly think about the next time you’re wiping up spaghetti sauce that’s dribbled down the cabinet door.

Remodeling Materials – Quartz Countertops

So, there’s a term that I need to say here, and at first glance I, too, was like, “Uhhhh…is that a word?” Wipe-ability. I hyphenated it for your sake, but apparently, this is a thing. It means exactly what you think it does, and it goes in context with the first remodeling material I have for you today. Quartz countertops are undoubtedly the easiest surface to maintain. It’s a non-porous material, so there’s no chance of anything staining. It’s also extremely durable; it won’t chip, crack, scratch, or scuff.     remodeling materials   remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – CoreTEC Flooring

New-age technology combined with a stunning, jaw-dropping look, CoreTEC is a flooring like no other. It’s best characteristic and the main reason it makes this list? 100% waterproof. Not water-resilient. Water. Proof. You could dump an entire gallon of whatever on these floors, leave for the weekend, and you’d come back to it staring right back at you like, “What? Was that supposed to phase me or something?” It doesn’t warp. It doesn’t buckle. It doesn’t act like your typical hardwood flooring at all. Too legit. And we have these lovely remodeling materials right here, in store, ready to be installed. Click here to check out our inventory.     remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Tiled Shower Walls

In general, tile is your safest bet when it comes to having a low-maintenance floor. But tiled shower walls exemplifies this characteristic. Heavily. As opposed to fiberglass shower walls, soap scum, dirt, and grime are easier to clean and maintain with a tiled shower wall. It can be as simple as purchasing an After Shower cleaner and wiping the walls down each time. Easy as pie. SIDENOTE: If you do tile your shower walls, refrain from using white grout. Those are TERRIBLY difficult to clean and you’ll curse the day you ever decided that. And chiseling out grout is no fun. Trust me. I know. Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Organizers

Everything just seems to run smoother in the family when you can find the things you’re wanting when you need them. Kitchen organizers are an excellent way to sort out all of your cooking essentials and save some space. Cause after all, counter space can be scarce within any family and in the morning when you’re frantically trying to make breakfast or make lunches for the day, you need as much space as you can get. Installing one of these inexpensive kitchen organizers makes for one of the best remodeling materials on this list. They’re handy and have a way of revolutionizing your organizational patterns in the kitchen. We have an abundance in stock, as well. Head here to shop! remodeling materials

Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Island

A kitchen island can be used as one of those hot spots in the house, ya know? A place where people gather to do homework, eat meals, and discuss their day. To me, a kitchen island is one of those assets that just bring together AND they’re one of the most functional tools in a kitchen design. More space. More storage. Less hassle.   remodeling materials   It’s in my hopes that these researching materials will meet your family friendly needs. Once again, we have most of these beneficial products in store! So, come on down to one of our two locations in Louisville and Cincinnati, and get started on your renovation today!

PRO: Additional Options to Impress Your Clients

How’s it going, professionals? I hope business is well, and that you’re so slammed with jobs, you honestly don’t know what to do with yourself at the moment. It’s better to have an abundance of jobs than to be stressing where your next one will be, am I right? Today, I’d like to discuss a few options, quite literally, on how you can maintain repeating customers in your queue. You’ll do this by simply impressing your clients in a way that shows off your finesse as a master of your trade.
In essence, you’ll suggest options that may have been overlooked in the initial design and will hopefully having your customers so satisfied with your expertise that they’ll go to no one else but you during their next renovation. To do so, I’ll break it down by a number of categories – kitchen, bath, flooring, tile, and doors – and provide a suggestion that one, enhances the look of the design, and two, will make your customer very happy that they called you. Cause that’s what it’s all about, right?

Kitchen Options – Crown Moulding

It’s no secret that cabinets are a significant factor in any kitchen design. They’re essential for the appearance of the kitchen style, but also for functionality as well. Typically, larger families require more kitchen space, from both the countertops and cabinets. The trick is to blend both together, using aesthetics as well as how functional the cabinets are to produce a design that gives you the best of both worlds. Those two words in bold, two lines above are yet another way to enhance the look of the kitchen without your customer’s digging too deep into their wallets.
The Crown Moulding option is one that can COMPLETELY change the look of a kitchen. Yes, it’s that drastic. It makes the difference of your standard cabinet look to something more elegant, elaborate, and sophisticated. At a pretty low cost. There’s a wide variety of options, too. Everything from extremely intricate designs to simple, smooth beveled edges. Just throw it out as a suggestion, and let your customers determine if they like the look or not. But – and I’m willing to bet – they’ll appreciate the tip.

options

Bath Options – Backsplash

Ah, talk about an enhancement. A tiled backsplash in a kitchen is almost mandatory once you’ve installed a couple during bathroom renovations. It’s simply a lovely feature, and I have a theory on why that is. Bear with me here, but a design is only as good as the components that it’s made of. Let’s take the color aspect of it all. If the colors do not work, the design does not work. But if the colors mesh well with another then it becomes appealing to the eye. So, when it comes to a backsplash, it’s just another asset, or component, that helps blend in the colors in the design.
Plus, look at the materials you’re dealing with, vanity alone. You have the color of the vanity, the color of the countertop, the wall paint color, accessories, and so on…and then when you add a backsplash, it just pulls everything together to make something quite extraordinary. Once again, low on cost, relatively easy on install, and tremendous on appearance. I love this option. Your clients will, as well. Take a peek at our backsplash tile options on our website. We have a wide variety of styles and finishes that will accommodate a number if designs!

Flooring Options – Quarter Round

In the remodeling industry, as you know, you hear the phrase “finishing touches” multiple times in conversation. Putting in quarter round after you’ve installed the floor and finished trimming the room is simply one of those things you can do to really “complete” a room. That God awful gap between the base boards and the floor is simply not a good look, and yes, I know that some people are fine with it to lower costs, but the look is ten times better when it’s taken care of. Maybe twenty.
I’d definitely suggest this option if you’re renovating a wide, open area like a basement or something of that nature. Closets and storage rooms aren’t as important, but in rooms where there’s going to be a flow of traffic, where your clients will entertain their guests, and so on…this is an excellent option. It’s the dot on the ‘i’ and the cross on the ‘t’.

options

Tile Options – Decorative Mosaic

Out of all the options that I’ll list in this post, this is the one that I’d highly suggest. Especially if you’re installing a tiled shower or a backsplash. My father likes to call them “decos,” for short, and we’ve installed quite a bit of them for a number of clients. They absolutely love the look. To me, personally, I think it’s best exemplified in a stand-up, tiled shower. Placing them about eye level, the color blends (or contrast, if you prefer) just make it truly legit design.
Honestly, that’s as best as I can say it. It’s just a 100%, cool-as-all-get-out, bad@$$ design. Straight up. I implore you to at least suggest “deco” tiles when on your next tile job. It’s stunning. Simply stunning. Again, we have a vast amount of some of the finest design and trends in decorative mosaic tiles that one can ask for. Go take a look right here!

Door Options – Custom Paint it

You have many of your standard colors out there to work with, it is true. But, if you want to really make a lasting impression, suggest to your client that they purchase a custom paint to finish of their door. It may seem a bit…quirky, sure, but I’m telling you, it’s effective. Last summer, one of my father’s longtime clients had us install an exterior door for them. The lady of the house wanted the front door to “pop,” so we went with this Canary Yellow color.
\And I’ll tell ya what, if I wasn’t almost blinded while about 50 times as I applied the paint. Super bright. Vivid. Distinct. At first, I thought these characteristics were faults, but once we installed it, and drove up on it for the first time, I began to appreciate its vivacity. It drew the eye, and to me, that’s what mattered most. Suggest a custom paint color, urge your client to think outside of the box, to have a one of a kind feature in a home that will make it entirely their own. Suggest these options, and watch the effects unfurl.

Why Waypoint Cabinets Are Fan Favorites

waypoint cabinets   At Builders Surplus, we feature some of the finest cabinetry lines that your money can buy. One of these lovely lines is Waypoint Cabinets, and they’re very much sought after in both kitchen and bathroom designs. Today, I’d like to discuss the many reasons why these cabinets are such a fan favorite and continue to be one of our best-sellers in store.

The Variety

Hey, when it comes to refinishing your bathroom or kitchen, you can never have too many options. Indecisiveness out the window, having an excellent variation of options makes the whole process easier instead of being limited to only two or three choices. So, when it comes to people loving Waypoint Cabinets, having a variety is definitely one of the more redeeming qualities. The company has five collections to choose from – the 400, 500, 600, 700, and Thermofoil series – and that’s just where the choices begin. You’re also able to pick from a variety of door styles, stain colors, and finishes including Auburn Glaze, Espresso, Honey, Cognac, Silk, Linen, and Stone. And that’s just to name a few. Seriously, folks, endless possibilities here.

The Quality

Above anything else, this is what Waypoint is known for. It’s true, there are many cabinet companies in the market, but this line is known for achieving that beautiful combination of an aesthetically-pleasing cabinet with prime functionality, which allows these stunning cabinets to be at the forefront of any design. The quality is exquisite. They use a sturdy hardwood when manufacturing their cabinets, making them extremely durable. Cabinets are used on the daily – constantly opening and closing – so it’s best if you look for ones that will last in longevity. In knowing this, Waypoint produces a product that is built beautifully AND build to last. I’d say this is one of, if not, the primary reason for Waypoint’s popularity.

The Creation

Waypoint Cabinets are made right here in the U.S.A. For those of you that shop local and know why it’s important to, you’ll understand why this is a pretty big deal. These days it seems like we’ve lost all of our materials and manufacturers to foreign estates, but when you come across a product like Waypoint’s and also find out that they’re right here, on this soil, you take note. Furthermore, they are made with some of the finest woods that God’s green Earth has to offer and cut into many different shapes and styles so as to accommodate a realm of different designs. Yes, they’re thoughtful like that.

The Promotions

Every month, Waypoint comes through with at least two promotional offers that are designed to give you, the customer, a better bang for your buck. Some of these offers entail a free cabinet from any given series, or a 10% discount on the 600/700 series, and so on and so forth. If you’re thinking about renovating your kitchen or bathroom, these promotions are perfect for you! The promos are activated with orders of twelve cabinets or more, and on some of them, the offers can be combined. A Comparison of Cabinet Wood Type

hickory
So you’re shopping for cabinets, huh? Maybe from Wellborn or Waypoint, and you’ve not quite figured out what kind of material you’d like to use in your kitchen or bathroom. Fact of the matter is, there are plenty of variations to choose from when it comes to cabinetry, one of the defining characteristics being wood type. Today, I’d like to list the several wood types that are available in cabinets and mention some of the qualities to give you a better of understanding of what you’re getting!

Red Oak Cabinet Wood Type

Oak, in general, is a very hard, heavy kind of wood, which often gives the impression of strength and durability. And in actuality, for such a solid, long-lasting cabinet wood type, it’s not as expensive as one might think. The course grain in this material often varies from vertical grain swoops to a more distinctive “swoop” pattern, providing more curvature in the grain. It’s an absolutely timeless material, for sure.
One of the main reasons why I prefer this material over others is it’s versatility. Choosing this material gives you the option of staining it to your fancy. Which, if you’re like me, and grow too accustomed to a certain look over a period of time, then this will be the way to go. A refreshing look is merely a couple stain coats away.

White Oak Cabinet Wood Type

White Oak is obviously very similar to its “red” counterpart, except for one bit – it’s a little stronger. With more golden tones, this wood type will give you the elegant look that you desire, and is literally perfect with any style. As pictured, White Oak is definitely more subtle in its grain. It seems softer, gentler than the red oak. I’d love to tell you that it’s similar in price, but the fact is, most times it’s only available in custom order.
I’ll say this much, too, a clear finish will brilliantly highlight the grain in this cabinet wood type. On the other hand,  stain could possibly oversaturate it, exaggerating the grain, making it look kind of two-toned. Not a good look.

whiteoak

Maple Cabinet Wood Type

Maple gives you this lovely look of fine-grain with a gentle, light color. Now, it is slightly more expensive than oak, but it’s not near as dense. It can be stained, but in my opinion if you want to achieve the best look, simply apply a thin coat of clear or natural finish to enhance the texture of this wood type. Trust me, the effects are magnificent in Maple.
This look provides a more contemporary approach to your kitchen or bath remodel. It’s known as a shock-resistant material, as well, and is incredibly durable. It takes paint like a breeze, too! Very versatile, and it’s made to withstand great temperatures and won’t crack or warp like some other materials may do. Sidenote: Because of the aforementioned, this material is quite popular for heavier cabinetry, such as dressers and kitchen cabinets.

maple

Hickory Cabinet Wood Type

Lighter than oak, but very, very similar in grain pattern and durability. It’s one of the strongest, hardest woods out there! There’s a sort of yellowish hue to it, almost creamy, and where it can also be stained, this material (much like Maple) is better suited with a fine layer of clear coat or natural finish. This is simply to emphasize the wonderful grain lines.
I’m a sucker for them, so I’ll be going that route each and every time. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right? More often than not, this material has been used to achieve that lovely rustic style. Because of this, it’s rarely seen as a custom or semi-custom cabinetry. It also needs to be noted that where this type is usually seen with a creamy color, it can also be seen in a dark reddish brown color OR nearly black. Dark hickory is 100% a favorite of mine.

hickory

Cherry Cabinet Wood Type

This material is hard enough to withstand a number of mishaps. Attention parents, if you have little ones running around your kitchen, this material just might be the one for you. It can be used for a number of styles, but is more commonly seen as elegant and formal as a traditional style. Although, there is some versatility to it. I’ve seen this wood type achieved magnificently in contemporary kitchen designs.
One of the absolute best qualities of this cabinet wood type is how it literally ages in time, growing darker with the days. Yes, just like fine wine, the unique look deeps through the years. Now, this type is a bit costly, mind you, which is why it’s often seen as a “luxury” wood.

cherry

Birch Cabinet Wood Type

A fine, fine, durably built wood that is slightly darker than maple, but not by much. It takes finishes very well, and is versatile in that it can guise as a more luxurious wood with a few, simple tweaks. When it’s stained properly, the look can do wonders, disguising as a Maple or Cherry wood type. Because of it’s irregular color, birch is relatively inexpensive. In fact, it’s 25-75% cheaper than other types like cherry or maple.

birch

Pine Cabinet Wood Type

Ah, now here’s one that sits apart from the rest. Pine is the ONLY softwood species that is commonly used in cabinetry. Because of this, it dents more easier than the others. Definitely not impenetrable, this one. Interestingly enough, this wood type is often used for rustic pieces, like farmhouse-style tables and chairs. If you’ve ever been to Cracker Barrel, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. And now I’m thinking about biscuits and gravy. Excellent.
It’s low-cost, takes paint well, but where some might say it’s perfect for kids’ furniture, I beg to differ. Kids can be a rowdy bunch, especially in the playroom, and this material simply isn’t built for that kind of debauchery. Just throwin’ that out there.

pine

Okay, people, there’s seven of the most commonly used cabinet wood types found in kitchen and bath cabinetry. As you can see, the majority of them get an A for durability, which should be a significant factor in your decision-making process! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that we offer some fine cabinetry here at Builders Surplus that features these amazing cabinet wood types. Come check out what we have, and we would be glad to offer our professional advice during a free kitchen design consultation. Until the, be safe, stay blessed, and enjoy 2017!

MADE IN THE US: One Reason to Love Wellborn Cabinets

Admit it, when you purchase an item from a store and see the “Made in the U.S.” tag, it kinda sorta makes you feel good about your purchase, doesn’t it? I’d venture to say it’s solely because you know that you’ve just supported a company that has its roots instilled in the soil you walk on. It is a homegrown, homemade product that you’ve bought with your hard earned cash. As is the cycle of our nation’s system, and so therefore, you boost the economy, further benefitting businesses locally AND nationally.     This is why, and I’m sure you know, there’s been an influx in buying locally and supporting companies that manufacture goods in America. This is not to say that you don’t condone or intentionally not seek to benefit foreign exchange, but it’s good to know when your money is circulating within the confines of your nation. Simple as that. And that is yet another reason we love Wellborn Cabinets! They’re made right here in the U. S. of A. Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about these homemade cabinets, detailing some history, and why they’re such a hot commodity at our stores.

About Wellborn Cabinets

1961   The Wellborn family have owned and operated Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., since 1961. Think about it, that’s more than fifty years of success! Any business that makes it past the 50-year mark absolutely has a timeless product, in my opinion. You simply don’t make it that far without providing customers a timeless, durable product. The company was originally founded by Paul and Doug Wellborn, and they’re located in the Deep South, in Ashland, Alabama. Their primary goal is a prime reason for their lengthy success. In their website, their goal is “to provide kitchen and bath cabinets crafted by dedicated Wellborn employees with the utmost quality and care.” aerial-photo-1100-x-479   The company had humble beginnings, starting out in a 3,200 sq. ft (holy smokes) building that manufactured cost-effective kitchen and bath cabinets and specialized in kitchen and bath contract sales for government-financed housing. Thirty five years after its inception, Paul Wellborn bought the entire company, became the sole owner, and switched up the Wellborn Cabinet clientele, focusing primarily on residential kitchen and bath dealers. Since then, the company has expanded its reach in both size and product selection, branching out to 6 product lines. In present day, Paul and the Wellborn family manufacture the company cabinets from start to finish in a 2,000,000 sq. ft. (pick up your jaw) facility in Ashland. Their tagline reads: Wellborn Cabinet, Time Tested, Quality Craftsmanship…Your Whole Home Solution. In essence, this company is about their business, and they are NOT playing around. You have to appreciate this kind of dedication.

Wellborn Cabinets – Made in the U.S.A.

godblessamerica   Like I explained before, it’s nice knowing the products you purchase are made here in this great nation. Wellborn Cabinets knows this, and they’ve dedicated their work to keep producing that same quality throughout its history. Their facility completely controls quality from the timber that arrives from the sawmill to the finished cabinet. This, as they say, will ensure you of a premium, quality cabinet. 100% Guaranteed. Also, this company is listed on numerous Made in America/USA websites with other manufacturers who also produce their products here, including MadeinUSA.com, KeepitUSAmade.com, and Backintheusa.us.

Wellborn Cabinets Go Green

environment   This company is in line with a heavy commitment to our environment and for good reason, right? Their website states, “environmental stewardship has been part of Wellborn’s culture since the beginning. This responsibility has always been about more than just words and has been proven through decades of actions, investments, and practices.” Here’s another little tidbit that I find equally as fascinating: Wellborn has recycling programs that utilize wood waste to generate power and steam and continue to lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions through technology. In fact, the energy they gain from waste powers hear for 5, 124 homes in one year. That’s incredible.   greenchoice   The company “utilizes steam from from the wood fired co-generation plant in the dry kilns, heating ovens, and paint room. The process saves approximately 300,000 (MCF) thousand cubic feet of natural gas annually, a non-renewable energy source, by using collected shavings.  They also partner with their contributors to further their environmental practices! This, as they say on their page, is why you’ll find the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program seal on their cabinetry. It’s clairvoyantly clear that this company has pushed themselves in the right direction towards a better future, perfecting their practices for a safer, cleaner environment. It is as their “Green” page states, “For Our Planet – Today, Tomorrow and Always” and “For the Future of Our Children.” I’m not quite sure you can find a more giving or environmentally-conscious company than this one, folks.     children   And there you have it, folks, a company that prides itself on being born right here in the U.S.A. They’re committed, focused, detail-oriented, and have a persistent drive to manufacture a quality product to produce lasting, satisfied smile, and all in an environmentally-safe way. You can’t make up this kind of genius, y’all. I urge you to the utmost degree to check these guys out when you consider doing a kitchen or bath remodel. As I’ve detailed above, you will not be disappointed. In the slightest. Until next time, everyone, be safe, and enjoy this new year! Stay blessed!
