PRO: Additional Options to Impress Your Clients

How’s it going, professionals? I hope business is well, and that you’re so slammed with jobs, you honestly don’t know what to do with yourself at the moment. It’s better to have an abundance of jobs than to be stressing where your next one will be, am I right? Today, I’d like to discuss a few options, quite literally, on how you can maintain repeating customers in your queue. You’ll do this by simply impressing your clients in a way that shows off your finesse as a master of your trade.
In essence, you’ll suggest options that may have been overlooked in the initial design and will hopefully having your customers so satisfied with your expertise that they’ll go to no one else but you during their next renovation. To do so, I’ll break it down by a number of categories – kitchen, bath, flooring, tile, and doors – and provide a suggestion that one, enhances the look of the design, and two, will make your customer very happy that they called you. Cause that’s what it’s all about, right?

Kitchen Options – Crown Moulding

It’s no secret that cabinets are a significant factor in any kitchen design. They’re essential for the appearance of the kitchen style, but also for functionality as well. Typically, larger families require more kitchen space, from both the countertops and cabinets. The trick is to blend both together, using aesthetics as well as how functional the cabinets are to produce a design that gives you the best of both worlds. Those two words in bold, two lines above are yet another way to enhance the look of the kitchen without your customer’s digging too deep into their wallets.
The Crown Moulding option is one that can COMPLETELY change the look of a kitchen. Yes, it’s that drastic. It makes the difference of your standard cabinet look to something more elegant, elaborate, and sophisticated. At a pretty low cost. There’s a wide variety of options, too. Everything from extremely intricate designs to simple, smooth beveled edges. Just throw it out as a suggestion, and let your customers determine if they like the look or not. But – and I’m willing to bet – they’ll appreciate the tip.

options

Bath Options – Backsplash

Ah, talk about an enhancement. A tiled backsplash in a kitchen is almost mandatory once you’ve installed a couple during bathroom renovations. It’s simply a lovely feature, and I have a theory on why that is. Bear with me here, but a design is only as good as the components that it’s made of. Let’s take the color aspect of it all. If the colors do not work, the design does not work. But if the colors mesh well with another then it becomes appealing to the eye. So, when it comes to a backsplash, it’s just another asset, or component, that helps blend in the colors in the design.
Plus, look at the materials you’re dealing with, vanity alone. You have the color of the vanity, the color of the countertop, the wall paint color, accessories, and so on…and then when you add a backsplash, it just pulls everything together to make something quite extraordinary. Once again, low on cost, relatively easy on install, and tremendous on appearance. I love this option. Your clients will, as well. Take a peek at our backsplash tile options on our website. We have a wide variety of styles and finishes that will accommodate a number if designs!

Flooring Options – Quarter Round

In the remodeling industry, as you know, you hear the phrase “finishing touches” multiple times in conversation. Putting in quarter round after you’ve installed the floor and finished trimming the room is simply one of those things you can do to really “complete” a room. That God awful gap between the base boards and the floor is simply not a good look, and yes, I know that some people are fine with it to lower costs, but the look is ten times better when it’s taken care of. Maybe twenty.
I’d definitely suggest this option if you’re renovating a wide, open area like a basement or something of that nature. Closets and storage rooms aren’t as important, but in rooms where there’s going to be a flow of traffic, where your clients will entertain their guests, and so on…this is an excellent option. It’s the dot on the ‘i’ and the cross on the ‘t’.

Tile Options – Decorative Mosaic

Out of all the options that I’ll list in this post, this is the one that I’d highly suggest. Especially if you’re installing a tiled shower or a backsplash. My father likes to call them “decos,” for short, and we’ve installed quite a bit of them for a number of clients. They absolutely love the look. To me, personally, I think it’s best exemplified in a stand-up, tiled shower. Placing them about eye level, the color blends (or contrast, if you prefer) just make it truly legit design.
Honestly, that’s as best as I can say it. It’s just a 100%, cool-as-all-get-out, bad@$$ design. Straight up. I implore you to at least suggest “deco” tiles when on your next tile job. It’s stunning. Simply stunning. Again, we have a vast amount of some of the finest design and trends in decorative mosaic tiles that one can ask for. Go take a look right here!

Door Options – Custom Paint it

You have many of your standard colors out there to work with, it is true. But, if you want to really make a lasting impression, suggest to your client that they purchase a custom paint to finish of their door. It may seem a bit…quirky, sure, but I’m telling you, it’s effective. Last summer, one of my father’s longtime clients had us install an exterior door for them. The lady of the house wanted the front door to “pop,” so we went with this Canary Yellow color.
\And I’ll tell ya what, if I wasn’t almost blinded while about 50 times as I applied the paint. Super bright. Vivid. Distinct. At first, I thought these characteristics were faults, but once we installed it, and drove up on it for the first time, I began to appreciate its vivacity. It drew the eye, and to me, that’s what mattered most. Suggest a custom paint color, urge your client to think outside of the box, to have a one of a kind feature in a home that will make it entirely their own. Suggest these options, and watch the effects unfurl.

Why Waypoint Cabinets Are Fan Favorites

waypoint cabinets   At Builders Surplus, we feature some of the finest cabinetry lines that your money can buy. One of these lovely lines is Waypoint Cabinets, and they’re very much sought after in both kitchen and bathroom designs. Today, I’d like to discuss the many reasons why these cabinets are such a fan favorite and continue to be one of our best-sellers in store.

The Variety

Hey, when it comes to refinishing your bathroom or kitchen, you can never have too many options. Indecisiveness out the window, having an excellent variation of options makes the whole process easier instead of being limited to only two or three choices. So, when it comes to people loving Waypoint Cabinets, having a variety is definitely one of the more redeeming qualities. The company has five collections to choose from – the 400, 500, 600, 700, and Thermofoil series – and that’s just where the choices begin. You’re also able to pick from a variety of door styles, stain colors, and finishes including Auburn Glaze, Espresso, Honey, Cognac, Silk, Linen, and Stone. And that’s just to name a few. Seriously, folks, endless possibilities here.

The Quality

Above anything else, this is what Waypoint is known for. It’s true, there are many cabinet companies in the market, but this line is known for achieving that beautiful combination of an aesthetically-pleasing cabinet with prime functionality, which allows these stunning cabinets to be at the forefront of any design. The quality is exquisite. They use a sturdy hardwood when manufacturing their cabinets, making them extremely durable. Cabinets are used on the daily – constantly opening and closing – so it’s best if you look for ones that will last in longevity. In knowing this, Waypoint produces a product that is built beautifully AND build to last. I’d say this is one of, if not, the primary reason for Waypoint’s popularity.

The Creation

Waypoint Cabinets are made right here in the U.S.A. For those of you that shop local and know why it’s important to, you’ll understand why this is a pretty big deal. These days it seems like we’ve lost all of our materials and manufacturers to foreign estates, but when you come across a product like Waypoint’s and also find out that they’re right here, on this soil, you take note. Furthermore, they are made with some of the finest woods that God’s green Earth has to offer and cut into many different shapes and styles so as to accommodate a realm of different designs. Yes, they’re thoughtful like that.

The Promotions

Every month, Waypoint comes through with at least two promotional offers that are designed to give you, the customer, a better bang for your buck. Some of these offers entail a free cabinet from any given series, or a 10% discount on the 600/700 series, and so on and so forth. If you’re thinking about renovating your kitchen or bathroom, these promotions are perfect for you! The promos are activated with orders of twelve cabinets or more, and on some of them, the offers can be combined. They’re serious incentives, and when you take a look at what you’re getting, you begin to realize the benefits of the whole package. It’s very, very difficult to pass up. Take a look at our Promotions page and see what deals you can get this month!           In all, Waypoint Cabinets are truly amazing products, ones that will ensure you of a beautiful kitchen design. It’s because of this that I strongly suggest you come take a look at what we have to offer in store at any of our two locations in Louisville or Cincinnati. Don’t just take my word for it, everyone. 5 Reasons to Work with Kitchen Designers

Ya know, in my 25 years, I’ve learned a few very necessary things when it comes to learning about new concepts, ideas, or ideologies. This was especially the case when attending college, trying to acquire enough knowledge as I possibly could to generate good study material, take meticulous notes, so I could breeze through a Final or ensure that my 10-page paper included crisp, clear thoughts to get a certain message across. One of these highly necessary, often pivotal methods was knowing when and who to ask for help. It was easy for me to think that I could make straight A’s on my own, that I could push myself as an individual to fulfill the requirements it took to achieve that perfect score on an exam or essay. The same goes for planning your kitchen renovation. Sure, you may have what it takes to DIY it, from start to finish. But take note of your resources, the kitchen designers. During this post, I’ll explain why you should work with one.

Kitchen Designers Are The Experts

I’ll lead this heading by finishing my story from the intro: As  I climbed that not-so proverbial hill (I studied at WKU) I learned that it was okay to reach for a hand or two, to ask for help even if I thought I had my head wrapped around a particular topic. Why? Because my professors were professional experts in the criteria that they taught, and I wasn’t going to let pride get in the way of an opportunity to pick their brains and gain a further understanding on the matter. The same goes for working with a kitchen designer. They are the experts. They know the in-and-outs of the industry like the back of their hand, and what’s more, they love to do it. Not just because it is their job, but because they want to make sure YOU, the client, can look back on the finished product with complete and total satisfaction, grinning from ear to ear. That is their grading scale, that is their lesson plan, that is how they are granted tenure. That last is proverbial, by the way.   diy kitchen remodel measurement

Kitchen Designers Have The Vision

I know firsthand how difficult it can sometimes be to put a dream or what you’ve been envisioning for the past who-knows-how-long on paper or on a sketchbook. Fact of the matter is, not everyone has the capability to do this. You have some who have a plethora of ideas, but they’re not creatives, that is only to say, their mind doesn’t operate in which, say, an artist’s does or an architect. And, look, that is perfectly okay. Trust me, I’ve been working with my dad for over 15 years in the home remodeling industry, and we’ve come across multitudes of customers who express their interests in a kitchen or bath remodel or even a basement design, and when it comes time for the blueprints to meet the brain, they’re lost. And. It’s. O-kay. Then you have the people that are just naturally able to visually perceive another person’s vision. These are your kitchen designers. You tell them your thoughts, your ideas, maybe you’ve sketched it out on a pad or you’ve jotted down some measurements along with a little bit of detail. Then when you meet with a designer, they do exactly that, design your kitchen by drawing it out on the screen, so you can see exactly, precisely, what you’re looking at.

Kitchen Designers Know the Process

I’m not entirely sure if you’re familiar of how overwhelming the renovation process can be (no matter what area of the house it is), but it can get pretty stressful. There’s the initial planning, including finances, measurements, time frame, cost of material and labor, and many other aspects to it. When you talk to a kitchen designer, they have all the answers and resources to guide your hand 100% of the way. They’ll break it down for you, step-by-step, to ensure complete comprehension. Because, and let’s get something straight, this is your house, your dream, you are adding value to your biggest asset, your home. In knowing this, the kitchen designers want to make sure that the decisions you make are your own. You give them the info, and they merely smooth the pavement to perfection.

Kitchen Designers Have Patience

Ya know, sometimes being indecisive is a good thing, you know what I mean? If you don’t know exactly what you want, it just means that you’ve recognized the variety of a certain material or design, and you want to make sure that you’re married the one that’s installed. When you meet with a kitchen designer, you’re dealing with people who understand the vastness of design. Through and through. Now, that’s not to say that you should go into a meeting with absolutely nothing in mind – that would be counterproductive – but if you have some ideas on some parts of a renovation, but aren’t as clear in others, they can help you. They’re excellent communicators and have quite a gift at gauging people’s interests and, in turn, offering advice that cater to the wants and needs of a customer. I’m telling you, these people have GOT IT. That special spark to get you where you need to go. Essentially, they attempt to minimize the potential migraines.

FREE CONSULTATION

Yes. How often does that word come up in any industry without there being some sort of catch, a hitch in otherwise eloquent speech. I know, right? I’ll wait for your answer. But it’s true, at Builders Surplus, we offer a free kitchen design consultation. No hitch, no glitch, no taking your card, cash, or money order. None of that. Just a one-on-one with a professional who knows and completely understands this entire process. Like I’ve mentioned before, they want to help you make your dreams a reality. What better way to prove such a statement than to offer a sit-down free of cost? There isn’t one. I know, it seems a bit unbelievable, but you don’t have to take my 12-pt font word for it. You can see for yourself on our website, and more specifically, right here.       So, there you have it, folks. Five legitimate reasons why you should work with a kitchen designer. And they’re all true, hardcore basis in fact, and I assure you that if you use this resource wisely that you’ll come to appreciate the remodeling industry just a little bit more. Our kitchen designers are friendly, fun to work with, compassionate, and possess a grand knowledge of their niche. If you or someone you know is planning or has even mentioned a renovation, let them know that they can get a FREE design consultation at Builders Surplus. Scouts honor. And with that said, I hope to see you all in store at any one of our two locations in Louisville or Cincinnati! Until then, be safe and stay blessed!

Things to Consider When Changing Your Kitchen Layout

A kitchen remodel is a big job in itself, but changing your kitchen layout can make it that much more complicated. There are several things you need to consider when you are deciding to change your kitchen layout. We’ve got them covered below! Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

Kitchen Layout Considerations

If you’re removing walls

If you’re removing walls, you need a licensed professional contractor. The biggest issue is making sure that the wall is not load bearing. If it is, you will need a beam, either exposed or hidden, each with their own cost. You also need to make sure you will have enough wall cabinets for your personal needs if you’re removing a large wall that once held upper cabinets. Open concept is very popular, and for good reason, but some people jump the gun. They decide to remove a wall without thinking about how it will effect their storage space. Lowers are great, but uppers are typically used for your most used items. Don’t forget to evaluate your needs honestly! load-bearing-walls kitchen layout

Electric Concerns

If you are changing your kitchen layout, you need to make sure that your vision is a possibility from an electric standpoint. While pretty much anything can be done, you need to make sure you have the budget if you are going to need serious changes made. Some things you need to consider is your stove hook up. This is not a regular plug, so you can either make sure it’s long enough to move where you want it to go, or you will have to get it moved. Consider where light switches used to be and where there will need to go now. Also think about the most logical places for wall outlets. Where will your toaster go? Do you used crock pots or blenders regularly? These will effect you later on down the road if you don’t consider them up front when adjusting your kitchen layout. electric in kitchen layout

Plumbing Concerns

When changing your kitchen layout, you need to consider if plumbing will be moving as well. Is your sink going in your island? If your refrigerator going to need to move? Where will your dishwasher go? All these appliances come with plumbing hookups as well. If you have a slab foundation, moving certain plumbing aspects could be extremely difficult. Sometimes, it’s no big deal. Again, find this out ahead of time so that you can plan your plumbing budget accordingly and make sure that your plan is actually doable before purchasing cabinetry that is built around this idea. Proper Flow For Appliances

When you plan to redo your kitchen layout, make sure that the flow of your appliances if conducive for easy cooking. This is usually done by triangle placement. Triangle placement in kitchen layouts say that your stove, sink and fridge should be in a sort of triangle if you want the best cooking flow. While not everyone opts for this, it’s definitly something to consider. Also think about if you’re left or right handed, where you should add extra storage for pots and pans, etc. Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

Our Top 2017 Kitchen Design Trends

With the new year comes new trends, so today we’ll cover the 2017 kitchen design trends that everyone is talking about! You may love them or hate them, or a little of both, but either way, they’re here and they’re not going anywhere (at least for another year)!

2017 Kitchen Design Trends To Watch For:

White Cabinets

Yes, white cabinets are still here! And we love it. While this may not be a new trend, it’s one that is classy and trendy, making it a fan favorite. It’s hard to go wrong with white. white-kitchen 2017 kitchen design trends

Wood planking

We can most likely thank Joanna Gains of HGTV‘s Fixer Upper for this one. This isn’t exactly your Grandma’s wood planking. White ‘Shiplap’ is a great way to add farm fresh character to your kitchen. One of my favorite 2017 kitchen design trends!

Terracotta & Natural Stone

Natural stone is a very classic look that dates back to ancient times, so needless to say it is one of those trends that can come in and out of style, but remains a long lasting look. I love it on floors and walls and there are so many ways to use it for a beautiful result! Ledge stone is always a great choice to get this look. Definitly a 2017 kitchen design trend to watch out for! Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

Brick Tile

I think it’s safe to say that I LOVE 2017’s kitchen design trends, because brick tile has been on my hot list all year. This is so beautiful on a backsplash, accent wall or the floor and can morph into whatever design style you’re going for. It can be country, modern, industrial, or traditional. Just find the best color of brick (we offer white, taupe and red) and the best application, and you’re ready for 2017! brick-tile 2017 kitchen design trends

Mixed and Matched

Two toned cabinets are another trend that is crossing over from 2016 to 2017. Upper cabinets are one color, lowers are another. You can even play around with door style! If you’re torn between two colors, don’t fret. Just get both!

Bold Colors

Emerald green, royal purple, bright blue can all be taken out of the paint palette and into your home this year! Bold kitchen cabinets are in. Check out Wellborn Cabinets‘ Color Inspire collection and get any color your heart desires! This is probably one to stay away from if you plan on reselling. Not everyone will be a fan, but that’s ok! Wellborn-Color-Inspire

Marble

Granite countertops seem to be taking a backseat to marble this year! We definitly love marble, but it is a bit higher maintenance. You can always achieve the marble look with quartz countertops as well, which are more durable and don’t require sealing! Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

Black Cabinets

While white is still a top contender in 2017 kitchen design trends, black cabinets are definitly on the come up and deserve to be noticed! Black can be elegant and chic. Industrial or modern. It’s not always a warm and cozy look, but done the right way, it definitly can be. Do something different this year and take a walk on the dark side! black-cabinets 2017 kitchen design trends

Extra Large Islands

Extra large islands are in this year, and it’s for good reason. Kitchen islands are a primary gathering place for families and friends, during the holiday season and all throughout the year. They offer additional storage space and prep space. Many offer an additional sink that allows two cooks in the kitchen without being on top of each other. The bigger the better in 2017! large-island 2017 kitchen design trends

Awesome Organizational Products

An organized kitchen makes for a happy cook. Today, it’s easier than ever to stay organized with all the amazing products on the market, especially for the price! You can get them built in to your custom cabinets, or they can be added after market and still give you the same look and function. Decide what you need most and BAM! You’re in business. A Comparison of Cabinet Wood Type

hickory
So you’re shopping for cabinets, huh? Maybe from Wellborn or Waypoint, and you’ve not quite figured out what kind of material you’d like to use in your kitchen or bathroom. Fact of the matter is, there are plenty of variations to choose from when it comes to cabinetry, one of the defining characteristics being wood type. Today, I’d like to list the several wood types that are available in cabinets and mention some of the qualities to give you a better of understanding of what you’re getting!

Red Oak Cabinet Wood Type

Oak, in general, is a very hard, heavy kind of wood, which often gives the impression of strength and durability. And in actuality, for such a solid, long-lasting cabinet wood type, it’s not as expensive as one might think. The course grain in this material often varies from vertical grain swoops to a more distinctive “swoop” pattern, providing more curvature in the grain. It’s an absolutely timeless material, for sure.
One of the main reasons why I prefer this material over others is it’s versatility. Choosing this material gives you the option of staining it to your fancy. Which, if you’re like me, and grow too accustomed to a certain look over a period of time, then this will be the way to go. A refreshing look is merely a couple stain coats away.

redoak

White Oak Cabinet Wood Type

White Oak is obviously very similar to its “red” counterpart, except for one bit – it’s a little stronger. With more golden tones, this wood type will give you the elegant look that you desire, and is literally perfect with any style. As pictured, White Oak is definitely more subtle in its grain. It seems softer, gentler than the red oak. I’d love to tell you that it’s similar in price, but the fact is, most times it’s only available in custom order.
I’ll say this much, too, a clear finish will brilliantly highlight the grain in this cabinet wood type. On the other hand,  stain could possibly oversaturate it, exaggerating the grain, making it look kind of two-toned. Not a good look.

whiteoak

Maple Cabinet Wood Type

Maple gives you this lovely look of fine-grain with a gentle, light color. Now, it is slightly more expensive than oak, but it’s not near as dense. It can be stained, but in my opinion if you want to achieve the best look, simply apply a thin coat of clear or natural finish to enhance the texture of this wood type. Trust me, the effects are magnificent in Maple.
This look provides a more contemporary approach to your kitchen or bath remodel. It’s known as a shock-resistant material, as well, and is incredibly durable. It takes paint like a breeze, too! Very versatile, and it’s made to withstand great temperatures and won’t crack or warp like some other materials may do. Sidenote: Because of the aforementioned, this material is quite popular for heavier cabinetry, such as dressers and kitchen cabinets.

maple

Hickory Cabinet Wood Type

Lighter than oak, but very, very similar in grain pattern and durability. It’s one of the strongest, hardest woods out there! There’s a sort of yellowish hue to it, almost creamy, and where it can also be stained, this material (much like Maple) is better suited with a fine layer of clear coat or natural finish. This is simply to emphasize the wonderful grain lines.
I’m a sucker for them, so I’ll be going that route each and every time. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right? More often than not, this material has been used to achieve that lovely rustic style. Because of this, it’s rarely seen as a custom or semi-custom cabinetry. It also needs to be noted that where this type is usually seen with a creamy color, it can also be seen in a dark reddish brown color OR nearly black. Dark hickory is 100% a favorite of mine.

hickory

Cherry Cabinet Wood Type

This material is hard enough to withstand a number of mishaps. Attention parents, if you have little ones running around your kitchen, this material just might be the one for you. It can be used for a number of styles, but is more commonly seen as elegant and formal as a traditional style. Although, there is some versatility to it. I’ve seen this wood type achieved magnificently in contemporary kitchen designs.
One of the absolute best qualities of this cabinet wood type is how it literally ages in time, growing darker with the days. Yes, just like fine wine, the unique look deeps through the years. Now, this type is a bit costly, mind you, which is why it’s often seen as a “luxury” wood.

cherry

Birch Cabinet Wood Type

A fine, fine, durably built wood that is slightly darker than maple, but not by much. It takes finishes very well, and is versatile in that it can guise as a more luxurious wood with a few, simple tweaks. When it’s stained properly, the look can do wonders, disguising as a Maple or Cherry wood type. Because of it’s irregular color, birch is relatively inexpensive. In fact, it’s 25-75% cheaper than other types like cherry or maple.

birch

Pine Cabinet Wood Type

Ah, now here’s one that sits apart from the rest. Pine is the ONLY softwood species that is commonly used in cabinetry. Because of this, it dents more easier than the others. Definitely not impenetrable, this one. Interestingly enough, this wood type is often used for rustic pieces, like farmhouse-style tables and chairs. If you’ve ever been to Cracker Barrel, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. And now I’m thinking about biscuits and gravy. Excellent.
It’s low-cost, takes paint well, but where some might say it’s perfect for kids’ furniture, I beg to differ. Kids can be a rowdy bunch, especially in the playroom, and this material simply isn’t built for that kind of debauchery. Just throwin’ that out there.

pine

Okay, people, there’s seven of the most commonly used cabinet wood types found in kitchen and bath cabinetry. As you can see, the majority of them get an A for durability, which should be a significant factor in your decision-making process! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that we offer some fine cabinetry here at Builders Surplus that features these amazing cabinet wood types. Come check out what we have, and we would be glad to offer our professional advice during a free kitchen design consultation. Until the, be safe, stay blessed, and enjoy 2017!

Kitchen Backsplash Step By Step!

Today, I’ll lay out my first DIY backsplash tile job to show you how easy it can be to do yourself! While you do need some special tools to accomplish the job, you can complete this project without prior experience and still have a great end result (if I don’t say so myself!). Lets get started!

Materials You’ll Need For a Subway Tile Backsplash Install:

Materials for subway tile backsplash Now, I’ll assume you’ve measured your space and have the appropriate number of tile for your square footage. If not, you need to measure the length x width and multiply the two together. This will give you your square footage.

Leveling:

Your first step is to make sure that you have a level line to start with. While you may assume that starting on the ledge of the countertops and going straight across is the best way to go, you may find yourself with rows that are crooked, due to a floor or cabinets that are not level. After using the level on my countertops, I saw that they were level, but here is what you can do if yours aren’t. In the event that you cant follow the line of the countertops, you’ll want to measure the height of half of your tile, which in our case is 1.5″ since our subway tile is 3″ in height. Now, use your level to make a line all the way across. This will give you an even line to follow. You can either build a small wooden ledge on that line to ensure that your tiles don’t slip, or you can make a point to check that they’re not sliding as you work, and adjust them if they are. When your wall is tiled to the top of your space, you’ll then go back and make cuts for this last half row on the bottom, next to your countertop. If you have a slight angle, that is something you can cut into the tile if needed. This way, the bottom of the tile may be angled ever so slightly on the edge of the countertop, but the row itself will be straight.

Time to Tile:

Now, it was time to tile. Because my tile was level, I started in the left and moved to the right. Some people may tell you to do it in sections instead of row by row, but I found this way to be fairly easy. My husband, who does have tiling experience, was not home when I decided to tackle this project, and since I was not experienced with a tile saw, I found a solution. I decided to leave all my cuts for the end of my project, which may or may not have been the best way to do it, but it turned out fine in the end and made it easy for me! Here was the space prior to backsplash. We have two other areas of splash but I will just focus on how we did this wall, as the others were more simple versions of this wall. Before-backsplash My first step was to lay a layer of premixed tile mastic on the wall. I did it to right above the outlet because I didn’t want it to dry before I could tile it. I started with my first tile, added my spacer to the right, and continued until the first row was done. The most important thing you can do with any tile job is butter the back. This makes the bond strong and makes sure you won’t have loose tiles. All you do is spread a thin coat of mastic on the back of your tile before sticking it to the wall. butter backsplash tile For my second row, I started it in the middle of the first tile on the bottom row. Because I was not making any cuts, I just placed that tile and did my row. I would cut that piece later. Two-rows-backsplash After stepping back and looking at my first two rows, I noticed that I had a few tiles that I needed to adjust for my second row to be perfectly straight. This was very important I found, because what looks straight up close may not actually be. Things can be tilted and still technically line up with the tiles that follow. Every few rows, step back to check your work. I kept going until I hit the outlet. When I got the the outlet, I came as close as I could. I then measured the space and included the space for my tile spacers on either side of the tile. I make a mark and I skipped over that area. I would do it later when I made all my cuts. I did make sure to clear off the mastic because if it dried that way, I wouldn’t be able to get my tile even when I went back to lay it.   I continued this way until I hit the top. I left spaces on either side of my row where cuts would need to go. When all the non cut pieces were complete, we wanted to make cuts all at one time, so we measured all the spots at once. numbering-tile backsplash   Then, I wrote down all of the numbers on a piece of paper, and measured each one, writing it down as I went, making sure I left room for my spacers. When cutting, its always best to cut it a little long than short. You can always trim it down if needed. We then made our cuts (I actually learned how to use the tile saw!) and we went to work placing each piece in it’s designated slot. Luckily, it worked out perfectly for us! After Kitchen Backsplash While it may not have been perfect, I was very proud of my first time doing a tile backsplash. Make sure that you remember to get bullnose tile for your edges. This will be a smooth curve to end your tile at the corners which will look much better than the regular edge of a tile. You can get them with the curve on the long edge or the short edge. We chose long edge and cut them like this (shown below).

Grouting your Backsplash:

When grouting backsplash tile, decide if you’re using premixed grout or you’re mixing it yourself. If you are mixing yourself, make sure you only mix enough that you can use in a 1-2 hr time period. I mixed half my bag, then the other half.  I used Montana Grey to give my bright white subway tile the extra pop I was looking for. Remove tile spacers and make sure that your tile surface is thoroughly cleaned. If you have mastic on your tile faces like I did, get a bucket of very hot water and a sponge, soft bristled scrub brush, or wash cloth. The hot water takes it off fairly quickly.

After you mix (directions will be on the grout), make sure you have a bucket of clean water and a grout sponge ready. Spread grout on the tile surface, use a rubber grout float or a squeegee to force it down into the joints. I used an un-sanded grout from North American Adhesive because of the size of my tile and grout lines (see link above to determine yours).

Tilt the float at a 45-degree angle and with the edge of the float, remove the excess grout from the surface immediately. Now tilt the float at a 90-degree angle and scrape it diagonally across the tiles. After you’ve done an area, use your wet sponge and wipe the surface clean. See if any areas need extra grout. Rinse out sponge and repeat. Change water as needed. Continue this process until your tile is grouted. There may be some areas that you need to use a finger to get the grout in, like around tight corners.

After-backsplash-grout

After-Grout-Backsplash right-side

Polish with a soft cloth when the grout has dried and a haze forms on the tile surface. Rinse again with sponge and clean water if necessary. Give your newly grouted a good look and yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!

Grouted-backsplash

I still need to give it one last scrub down. Some of the areas have a bit of extra grout on the tile, but it should come right off with hot water and a sponge. I hope this helps you in your own DIY backsplash journey and I can’t wait to hear about how it turns out! Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

MADE IN THE US: One Reason to Love Wellborn Cabinets

Admit it, when you purchase an item from a store and see the “Made in the U.S.” tag, it kinda sorta makes you feel good about your purchase, doesn’t it? I’d venture to say it’s solely because you know that you’ve just supported a company that has its roots instilled in the soil you walk on. It is a homegrown, homemade product that you’ve bought with your hard earned cash. As is the cycle of our nation’s system, and so therefore, you boost the economy, further benefitting businesses locally AND nationally.     This is why, and I’m sure you know, there’s been an influx in buying locally and supporting companies that manufacture goods in America. This is not to say that you don’t condone or intentionally not seek to benefit foreign exchange, but it’s good to know when your money is circulating within the confines of your nation. Simple as that. And that is yet another reason we love Wellborn Cabinets! They’re made right here in the U. S. of A. Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about these homemade cabinets, detailing some history, and why they’re such a hot commodity at our stores.

About Wellborn Cabinets

1961   The Wellborn family have owned and operated Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., since 1961. Think about it, that’s more than fifty years of success! Any business that makes it past the 50-year mark absolutely has a timeless product, in my opinion. You simply don’t make it that far without providing customers a timeless, durable product. The company was originally founded by Paul and Doug Wellborn, and they’re located in the Deep South, in Ashland, Alabama. Their primary goal is a prime reason for their lengthy success. In their website, their goal is “to provide kitchen and bath cabinets crafted by dedicated Wellborn employees with the utmost quality and care.” aerial-photo-1100-x-479   The company had humble beginnings, starting out in a 3,200 sq. ft (holy smokes) building that manufactured cost-effective kitchen and bath cabinets and specialized in kitchen and bath contract sales for government-financed housing. Thirty five years after its inception, Paul Wellborn bought the entire company, became the sole owner, and switched up the Wellborn Cabinet clientele, focusing primarily on residential kitchen and bath dealers. Since then, the company has expanded its reach in both size and product selection, branching out to 6 product lines. In present day, Paul and the Wellborn family manufacture the company cabinets from start to finish in a 2,000,000 sq. ft. (pick up your jaw) facility in Ashland. Their tagline reads: Wellborn Cabinet, Time Tested, Quality Craftsmanship…Your Whole Home Solution. In essence, this company is about their business, and they are NOT playing around. You have to appreciate this kind of dedication.

Wellborn Cabinets – Made in the U.S.A.

godblessamerica   Like I explained before, it’s nice knowing the products you purchase are made here in this great nation. Wellborn Cabinets knows this, and they’ve dedicated their work to keep producing that same quality throughout its history. Their facility completely controls quality from the timber that arrives from the sawmill to the finished cabinet. This, as they say, will ensure you of a premium, quality cabinet. 100% Guaranteed. Also, this company is listed on numerous Made in America/USA websites with other manufacturers who also produce their products here, including MadeinUSA.com, KeepitUSAmade.com, and Backintheusa.us.

Wellborn Cabinets Go Green

environment   This company is in line with a heavy commitment to our environment and for good reason, right? Their website states, “environmental stewardship has been part of Wellborn’s culture since the beginning. This responsibility has always been about more than just words and has been proven through decades of actions, investments, and practices.” Here’s another little tidbit that I find equally as fascinating: Wellborn has recycling programs that utilize wood waste to generate power and steam and continue to lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions through technology. In fact, the energy they gain from waste powers hear for 5, 124 homes in one year. That’s incredible.   greenchoice   The company “utilizes steam from from the wood fired co-generation plant in the dry kilns, heating ovens, and paint room. The process saves approximately 300,000 (MCF) thousand cubic feet of natural gas annually, a non-renewable energy source, by using collected shavings.  They also partner with their contributors to further their environmental practices! This, as they say on their page, is why you’ll find the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program seal on their cabinetry. It’s clairvoyantly clear that this company has pushed themselves in the right direction towards a better future, perfecting their practices for a safer, cleaner environment. It is as their “Green” page states, “For Our Planet – Today, Tomorrow and Always” and “For the Future of Our Children.” I’m not quite sure you can find a more giving or environmentally-conscious company than this one, folks.     children   And there you have it, folks, a company that prides itself on being born right here in the U.S.A. They’re committed, focused, detail-oriented, and have a persistent drive to manufacture a quality product to produce lasting, satisfied smile, and all in an environmentally-safe way. You can’t make up this kind of genius, y’all. I urge you to the utmost degree to check these guys out when you consider doing a kitchen or bath remodel. As I’ve detailed above, you will not be disappointed. In the slightest. Until next time, everyone, be safe, and enjoy this new year! Stay blessed!

Achieving the Best Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel

Alright, so you’re living in Cincy. Perhaps you’ve just purchased a house and have some work to do to make it exactly to your liking OR you’ve been living there for a while and feel the need to make some adjustments. It goes without saying that this process can get a bit overwhelming, so during this blog post, I’d like to lay it all out for you on how to achieve the best Cincinnati kitchen remodel!

Planning

This is a HUGE component to the entire process, and it’s multi-faceted, so listen up, folks. As part of the planning process, you need to know exactly what you’d like to do. Whether it’s your or your spouse, or both, it’s essential that you try to pinpoint exactly what you’d like to do before you go out shopping. The reasoning is simple.
kitchen remodeling Cincinnati
If you have a good idea of your wants and needs, you can fixate your budget, as opposed to shopping around blind, and end up spending much more than you accounted for. There are some truly brilliant design commodities in this industry, but some are better suited than others. Please, keep that in mind.

Research Contractors

Once you’ve gathered all of your thoughts on what you’d like to do, it’s time to do a bit of research. First, you should research contractors around the Cincinnati area. Go online, look at reviews, ask around on social media, and make a list of the contractors you like. I encourage you to visit the Better Business Bureau website on contractor services in the Cincy area. In fact, if you’ll click here, it’ll direct you to the full list that you’ll need. Once you’ve done this, call them.
Explain in as much detail as you can on what you want your kitchen remodel to be entirely. Once you’ve done this with each respectable contractor, it’s time to get estimates. This will determine your budget as far as labor goes. This number will dictate how much you’re willing to spend on the materials you’ll need – the other half of this process.

Research Materials

Now, for the fun part. Getting the materials you need for your Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel. I encourage you look around to as many department stores as you can in the Cincy area. But, and I would be remiss not to mention it, we have a store located in Newport that should accommodate your entire kitchen remodel. I say you should compare because once you do, you’ll see how truly great out prices are, and why the services we offer are such an incentive.

Feel free to head to our website and check out what we have!  We have cabinets, hardware, countertops, sinks, and plenty more where that came from. Once you’ve shopped around and picked out what you’d like…it’s nearly time to start.

Remodel Time

You’ve got your contractor, you’ve picked out your materials, and now it’s time to break ground on your Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel! Okay, so, the number one thing I have to make sure I get across is to be patient. Patience is key during this entire process. It’s going to be noisy, you’re kitchen will be gone as you know it, and it’ll never be the same. Cause eventually, it’ll be better. But, it’s important to note that you are losing some things, like the obvious, a place to cook meals.
Amazing kitchen remodel Cincinnati
Pretty important, I’d say. It’s imperative you take this into consideration. Make a temporary meal-making place, plan to have dinner with some neighbors, go out to eat at a family restaurant a couple nights a week. Ideally, you have a contractor that you trust, and you can go away for a little bit, but we don’t live in a perfect world, do we? In any case, have patience and solace in the fact that when it’s over…you’ll have your dream kitchen. Case closed.

And there it is, folks. Your Cincinnati Kitchen Remodel. It really is all about planning, so it is in my hopes that you heed my advice. Plan accordingly, and be patient. It can be as simple as that.

How to Achieve your Home Remodeling Goals in 2017

New home remodel with new kitchen and diningroom in eclectic style Alright, let me guess. You’ve been itching and dying to get some remodeling done around the house, but something always comes up or you forget about it for a time, or maybe the finances aren’t all in the right spot in the moment, and you simply [think] you need more time. I get it, I get it. it. We all know how life can be at times, but I implore you to wait no longer. But how do you do this? An excellent question that will be followed by a similar answer. In this post, I’d like to discuss what you can do to take action in your home remodeling and quit living in procrastination nation.

Home Remodeling Plan

home remodeling   The very first thing you need to do is take some time to relax and plan exactly what you’d like to do. Include your significant other, lay down, get out a sketch pad, and draw up some designs that you’d like to incorporate. It’s easy to just say, “Yeah, um, we really need to do something about this kitchen,” but it’s quite another thing to detail out why that is specifically. In any case, this is the stage where it’s time to pinpoint exactly what you’d like to do. Want more kitchen space? Then perhaps you need to knock out a wall or two. Need more storage? Then it’s time to think about more cabinets. home remodeling Think your bathroom would be more suitable to your liking if you had a standing shower as opposed to a tub? Figure it in. Let you and your family create a “roundtable” atmosphere, dishing out ideas and make your new remodel functional as well as satisfying. If you make it a fun activity with the whole family or just you and your spouse, then it won’t be a drag or something to just get over with. It can and will be an exciting process.

Home Remodeling Design

home remodeling Alright, you’ve achieved what you’d like to happen, now it’s time to get serious about your home remodeling ideas. Home Remodeling Execution

home remodeling   Ah, it’s down to the nitty-gritty now. Remember last year when you didn’t get done what you wanted to get done. This last and final step let’s those thoughts be a part of the past – it’s time to look at the present. Cause it’s here. Now, we 100% understand if you’d like to just take the reigns from here and be on your way. Unique DIY Touches For Your Kitchen Island

kitchen island

It goes without saying that a kitchen island can be one of the most prominent features in the entire design, and not because it’s literally right in the middle of everything, although that plays its part. This feature simply opens up an array of possibilities in terms of design and functionality. Today, I’d like to discuss a few DIY options that will make your kitchen island stand out in a very positive way!

Add Beadboard to your Kitchen Island

Adding this sorta subtle piece of decor gives your island a certain edge, a certain feel to it instead of plain ole cabinetry faces. The vertical lines give the island a grander appeal when one enters the kitchen, too. Keep in mind, you can also paint beadboard the color that you’d like, adhering it your overall design and style.

Using Reclaimed Wood on your Kitchen Island

Simply put, this looks is as legitimate as it gets. Seriously, no joke. Especially if you’re going for the rustic, antiqued look. It adds a certain flavor to the design, piquing an irresistible interest. If you’re looking for a simple way to give your island that well sought after rustic look to compliment your kitchen, I definitely recommend this idea.
kitchen island

Install Hooks on your Kitchen Island

Cause why not, right? You have this lovely island just chillin’ in the center of your kitchen, so I think it’s only fitting that you use it for storage! Duh. Put some hooks or some dowels at the edge of your island to hang coffee mugs, towels, and such. I feel like this gives the kitchen island more of a homey, comfortable look, you know what I mean? Not only does it look neat and it’s extremely useful, but it adds to the organizational element of your kitchen, giving you maximum functionality. This…is an excellent idea.
kitchen island

Add Shelves to your Kitchen Island

Much like the above, this is just another easy way to give yourself some more storage space or decorate it the way you’d like and put knick-knacks and sentimentals on them to make the design your own. Either way, no one has ever complained about extra shelving. Ever. Sidenote: Another great idea. Just saying.
kitchen island

Set Some Stools Around your Kitchen Island

If you have the room, then I supremely suggest this! It may not seem like such an addition at first, but wait till that first huge Sunday breakfast or when it’s your turn to host the Thanksgiving party, and you’ll begin to see its beneficial uses. Plus, it’s just as I explained in the intro, it’s simply a nice touch.
kitchen island

So, there you have it, folks. Just a few ideas to get the gears rolling! Just remember to never reject the opportunity to make the style of your home your own. It’s your niche, your sanctuary, and if it makes you happy, do it. You want a complete baby blue kitchen island? Do it. You want an entire island made out of Legos? Get it done. There is no bounds to your creativity, y’all. Embrace it…and use it. Also, I wasn’t kidding about the Lego island.

Trendiest Tile Flooring Options For Your Home

tile flooring
Tile flooring has and always will be an excellent flooring option for a number of reasons. You’ve got like Wood Look, Ledge Stone, Polished Porcelain and Decorative. And those are just to name a few. Today, I’d like to discuss some of the hottest trends out there right now, explain their uniqueness, and dive into some really cool designs that up-and-coming in the industry. Let’s get it!

Wood-Look Tile Flooring

tile flooring
Wood-Look tile has seriously been all the rage for the past couple of years, and I’ll be honest, folks, it’s not going anywhere. It’s incredibly durable, easy to clean, much cheaper than regular hardwood flooring, and it’s extremely versatile. When you use this material with an interesting, unique pattern, such as the herringbone (pictures above), it just sets it off. Also, wood-look tile can go just about anywhere in the household, a feature that regular hardwood flooring merely wishes it had.
tile flooring
Also, it’s pretty environmental. According to our friends at Daltile, nearly 20 million trees are cut down each year. Wood-look tile certainly doesn’t contribute to that number, and in its usage, as a whole we can decrease that number drastically. Just a little food for thought in that regard.

Cement-Look Tile Flooring

tile flooring
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Cement? Seriously? Isn’t that used in, like, garages and industrial factories, stuff like that? The answer is…yes, sure….and sort of. But you’d be surprised by how incredibly nice this material looks when there’s a unique design attached to it. Also, large format tiles works best for this material, specifically 32×32.
tile flooring

They also come in a variety of colors, like you’ll see above. I just think it’s insane how what was once purely used for industrial/commercial reasons is now an extremely hot commodity in the residential area, as well. Excellent stuff.

Brick-Look Tile Flooring

tile flooring

Easily my favorite of three hottest trends rights now, hands down. It has the look and feel of actually brick. Plus, we know that porcelain is an excellent tile flooring option, so this is almost a tried and true material of sorts.

I guess what really wows me about this particular material as a flooring option is the historical vibes I get from it. It’s like I’m in 18th century England, and quite honestly, it makes me want to write for days. It’s unique, it’s durable, and pretty quirky. Also, it’s to be noted that there’s a particular material, aged brick, that has seemed to rise in popularity.

So, there you have it! Three extremely popular, extra unique tile flooring options that have continued to drop jaws across the nation. Another side note, one of the main reasons for the fame is because you’re getting the look and feel of the material it mimics without the high price of labor difficulty. It’s a win/win all around.

Now, during your kitchen remodel, you can change that and add fixtures that not only give you the ample light you need, but look good while doing it. kitchen remodel A couple of weeks ago, my dad and I visited one of our usual customers to talk about the lighting in her kitchen – there just simply wasn’t enough. But instead of rewiring for additional fixtures, we thought of another idea, one that we’ve used before in a bathroom and were mesmerized by the effect. A skylight. We installed a 14-inch skylight that provides the light output of 5 100w lightbulbs! Crazy, right? And it turned out beautiful. In fact, she told us a few days later that she doesn’t even have to turn on the kitchen lights in the daytime. Exceptional.

Family Friendly Kitchen Designs

kitchen designs   One of the first steps in preparation for kitchen designs is adhering to your audience, or in this case, the familial foodies that reside in the household. It’s no secret that your kitchen is, without question, the primary spot in your home. Think about it, you wake up, and if you’re like me, breakfast is already in mind, so you’ll raid the kitchen with hopes of finding some bacon and eggs, maybe even some pancakes. But that’s just me. Point is, it’s the place where you prepare your meals, and with as much time as you spend doing so, you want to me comfortable, relaxed, extremely pleased in area you work in. Depending on how small or large your family is, you may or may not need to make some accommodations. It is in my hopes that this post will deliver some ideas for you and yours on making your kitchen design feasible for the entire family. Let’s get started!

Using Space in Family Kitchen Designs

kitchen designs Counter Space: Large family or not, having room to prepare your meals can go the distance when it comes to comfortability in your kitchen design. Trust me, after having lived in several apartments, it can be a nuisance moving things around just to have a place to chop up a couple of onions. Do yourself a favor and provide ample room for cutting boards, utensils, and your appliances like a blender or the microwave. Think about Thanksgiving, and how much more comfortable you’ll feel when the relatives come over and you’re not having to squeeze into a compact kitchen because there’s simply not enough counter space. You’ll thank me later. kitchen designs Walking Space:  Let’s face it, the kitchen brings in more traffic than L.A. does at rush hour. People are in and out grabbing snacks and drinks throughout the entire day, right? So, think about the amount of space you actually need and act accordingly. This bit is especially true if you have an island in your kitchen. Be aware of how much room you have between the island and your wall cabinets, refrigerator, oven – you get the point. I cannot tell you how many times people have neglected precaution, ran with lazy kitchen designs, and want to know why their refrigerator door won’t open all the way. Use your space wisely. kitchen designs   Cabinets-Shop-Ad Cabinet Height: Now, it may not seem like much, but cabinet height matters. For example, my girlfriend is a tiny thing, barely 5”2′, and she’s constantly asking me to reach up and grab some ingredient or bowl from the top cabinet. I thought about getting her a stool, but that’s literally just another step to the cooking process, and no one wants to have to drag a stool out merely for a pinch of brown sugar. By all means, please, take your height into consideration and adhere your cabinets to it. Note: I say this meaning the actual, physical height of the cabinet as well as where you bolt them on your kitchen.

Quirks in Family Kitchen Designs

kitchen designs Adding stools/chairs: Much like the breakfast bar design, adding stools nestled underneath a countertop makes a kitchen more welcoming. It says, “this is not merely a place to cook, but a place to talk, as well.” Designer Eldon Long had this to say about his family-functional kitchen designs: “I wanted it to look more like a family room. The idea was, let’s make this a multifunctional space that we can use 24/7.” Taking a look at the picture below, you can see how well he achieved this effect. Families have a bond, right? One that encourages constantly through meaningful conversation and boundless unity. Making your kitchen emulate, say, a cafe allows for this space to be a place of conversation. kitchen designs Add a blackboard: Ah, my personal favorite. This idea screams quirky! Honestly, though, it definitely has its uses. Think about it, how many times have you went to the grocery and forgot something. Yeah, me too. Several times. Adding a blackboard not only adds character, but it allows family members to jot a list down or a special treat, making everyone aware. Fun, right?

Maintenance in Family Kitchen Design

kitchen designs   Shop-Ad-Laminate_LVT The Groundworks: Whether it’s hardwood flooring or tile, be conscious of what you put down in your kitchen as far as maintenance goes. Especially if you have little ones running around, you know how messy things can get. I mean, I just turned twenty-five, and I’ve been known to make a bit of a mess in kitchen. Just remember that some surfaces are more forgiving than others. In my opinion, 100% waterproof is 100% the way to go. Our CoreTEC flooring has the ability to withstands puddles, yes, puddles of water without damage.  It’s perfect for any room, any household, but definitely for families because you simply just never know. Like the old adage goes, better safe than sorry. You can check out this mind-boggling product here.   kitchen designs Countertops: Any surface in your kitchen should be relatively maintenance free. If there’s any place where “accidents” are going to happen, it’ll be the kitchen, don’t you agree. Pasta sauce covers the countertop, a wine glass plummets and breaks, or the usual “I forgot to cover the blender” mistake arises, and you’re left with a mess and a half to clean up. My opinion? Silestone. It’s a Quartz, so it provides the elegant look without the weakness of granite or marble. It won’t stain, it’s non-porous, providing you with a low-maintenance surface that ease that tantrum you have when the ketchup bottle explodes for no apparent reason. It is a kitchen, anything could happen.

What Makes Some Kitchen Cabinets Cost More?

Today, I’m going to talk about why some kitchen cabinets are sometimes a bit more costly than others. We’ll look at the direct components of a cabinet, and discuss how each element has a set of options, some more expensive than others.

Kitchen Cabinets – Wood Species

Kitchen Cabinets Character Maple or Hickory: Hands down, without question, the most expensive. This species sports a strong grain, making it solid and extremely durable. It has a rustic, or country, look that is highly sought after, but at a steep price. Kitchen Cabinets Cherry: This is the more traditional approach, and definitely more expensive than most.  A cherry wood species stains magnificently, going on smooth and easy to soak in. Whereas some other wood might take a few coats, this one reveals an outstanding, fine finish with one. It has warmer, red tones and tends to darker over time. Kitchen Cabinets   Maple: Cost-effective, and paints quite nicely. It can also be updated! Although, there’s less grain in this species, it is a fine one for your money. Kitchen Cabinets Oak/Ash: Another traditional look, and relatively inexpensive as well. The grain shows right through this wood species, tends to be a bit rustic, and can also be updated! Kitchen Cabinets Medium-density fiberboard (MDF): This very affordable species is a painted option only, hence the low cost. But for your money, it’s an excellent option and looks great in any kitchen.   Cabinets-Shop-Ad     Kitchen Cabinets Laminate: Another more traditional approach, ranging from a simple design to contemporary. But be careful, this species does not do well next to heat and tends to yellow if it’s set to close to an oven. Kitchen Cabinets Thermofoil: Your wallet will love this option. It’s only available in white or linen, and is yet another wood that cannot withstand excessive heat.

Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinets – Door Options

Traditional (Standard) Overlay: Least expensive. The frame is visible between the doors. Full Overlay: Moderately inexpensive. The doors cover entire cabinet width. Inset: The most expensive option. The door set inside the frame. Slab: A bit costly. Boasts a flat, solid panel door.

Kitchen Cabinets – Finishes

Kitchen Cabinets Standard Stain: Undoubtedly, the most cost-effective approach. It would be as if you bought some cabinets and applied the stain yourself. With this finish, the cabinet sides may have a laminated end that coordinates. Kitchen Cabinets Special Stain/Paint: This process is a bit more difficult than merely applying some stain, but the finish is that much better. Visually appealing, noticeable, but the sides need to be skinned to match, adding to the cost.   Cabinets-Shop-Ad     Kitchen Cabinets Paint Stain with Glaze: Painted cabinets are a hot commodity right now, and can make your kitchen a little bit brighter. By adding a glaze to stain or paint, the finish draws out the finer details. Kitchen Cabinets Finishing Techniques: Now depending on your budget, one of these features is an excellent finishing touch. Using a technique such as weathering, or the Vintage look adds character and lovely style, but of course, all at a nice price, too.

Mediterranean Kitchen: Get the Look

At Builders Surplus, Kitchens are one of our specialities, and today we’re going to show you how to achieve the Mediterranean Kitchen look. The Mediterranean kitchen design is a favorite of many homeowners. Its very appealing to those who like relaxed style with a right and sunny feeling. This style is also reminiscent of the old world, particularly Italy, Greece and other Mediterranean based locations, as the name suggests. The Mediterranean style is relaxed, warm and inviting, while also elegant and sophisticated.

Elements of a Mediterranean Kitchen:

Color:

The colors are a very important part of the Mediterranean style. The look should be soothing, with rich and warm colors hues. The style pulls from the sun, sea and natural foliage that are native to the region. Spicy reds, yellows, terra cotta colors, ocean blues and muted greens really bring the Mediterranean style together. You should feel as though you’re on a sandy beach or in the Italian Countryside.

Tile:

The main theme of Mediterranean is natural looking materials. Tile is a very important choice in this style of kitchen. Not only will you see a lot of tiled floors in Mediterranean kitchens, you will almost always see a tile backsplash. Travertine is a popular choice, with the natural stone fitting perfectly with the style. Hand painted tiles are a perfect accent to add, really accentuating the old world vibe we talked about. Adding ledge stone or any other type of natural stone accent is also another great way to add some pop with your tile. While doing some of this stone work can e time consuming, we offer a variety of “Natural stone tile” that is much easier to install, like brick tile, ledge stone panels, or mesh back tile.

Typically, Mediterranean kitchens will create some sort of focal point with their tile. It is typical to do it over the stove area. Use different patterns of the same tile, or different tiles to accent, it’s up to you. They are still usually in the same natural hues or they are of the hand painted variety.

Flooring:

Flooring in a Mediterranean kitchen is usually always a hardwood or tile. The hardwood can be dark and rich, or lighter and more rustic or reclaimed looking. It all depends on the exact style you’re going for. You can a more modern Mediterranean kitchen or go more old world. Tiles are typically a tan, brown, cream or reddish color, keeping in line with the neutrals of the style.

Cabinets:

In Mediterranean kitchen design, cabinets are often constructed from high-quality woods like cherry or character maple. They can be left in their natural state, stained or painted to add a colorful element to the design. You will often see pops of turquoise, green, or various other colors.
Mediterranean kitchen green cabinets
We also see the antique white cabinets often in Mediterranean kitchen design. This keeps the room light, bright and airy. Dark cabinets also work well in the space. What we do find is that almost all of the cabinets in a Mediterranean kitchen have detailing in the door. You will virtually never see a slab or shaker door in this style of kitchen. This brings the more hand-carved look into the space. You’re not looking for sleek in your cabinet door with this kitchen style. You will also see glazes or distressed finishes on these types of cabinets.

Architectural Features:

There are a few main architectural features in Mediterranean kitchen design. The first is the presence of arches. You will find beautiful arches over fireplaces, in walls, or in a hearth design. Hearths over top of the stove area are a very popular design choice as well.

Beams are another big architectural player in Mediterranean kitchens. Dark, light, rustic, thick, thin, it doesn’t really matter. You will find them in the majority of these kitchens. And for good reason, they are beautiful! Textured Walls add a very old world feel to a Mediterranean kitchen. Most old kitchens in this area of the world had plaster or stone walls, so this brings back the original feel. Detailed ceilings can be found is the majority of Mediterranean kitchens as well. It could be trey ceilings, tiled ceilings, beams, painted ceilings, the choices are endless. This adds some serious detail and drama to the space!

Lighting:

In a Mediterranean kitchen, you need dramatic lighting. You will always find chandeliers and lots of  wrought iron. You will often see pot racks double as lighting, as shown above. The bigger, the better!
As you can see, Mediterranean kitchens have a very unique sense of style. It is the epitome of old and new, class and relaxation. For more examples of beautiful Mediterranean kitchens, check out this blog! If this is your dream style, we hope we’ve laid out the road map for you to achieve it! How to Finance your Home Renovation

There’s plenty to think about when it comes any home renovation project. It’s easy to get mixed up styles, the design, and which colors to choose from, but usually one of the first parts of the process is figuring out financing. Now, there are plenty of options, some that are universally obvious, but there’s a couple of choices to choose from that we offer here at Builders Surplus.

As professionals in the renovation industry, we are constantly asked questions about our Financing Options. Rest assured that we have the knowledge and resources to make your dream project into a reality. We take pride in being able to simplify your home remodeling experience, especially when it comes to saving you money!

Home Renovation

Paying Out of Pocket for your Home Renovation

Pros: It’s finished. One of the main parts of the whole process is completed, and now the only worry is getting exactly what you paid for. In this option, you aren’t dealing with banks, interest rates, or payments. Your project has been solidified by one lump some, and you can now devote your time and energy peacefully without the worry of how much this is going to cost you in the future.
Cons: Depending on the project, things can get pretty pricey, and it can be hard to write that check when it gets into the thousands. If you’re working on a budget, dishing it all out at once can be more stressful than some of the other options.

Home Renovation

Paying by Credit Card for your Home Renovation

Pros: Your Bank accounts remain where they are for a while, and you’re not having to produce some astronomical number for your remodel. Like anything else, this establishes credit, and the more, the merrier, right? Speaking of, if you already have good credit, there are plenty of lenders that will offer 0% interest rate. This, in my opinion, is always the best approach if you can get into it, especially for small projects.
Cons: Interest rates can be a doozy if you’re credit isn’t up to par, and even then, you have to be cautious of expiration dates and the chance that those interest rates will sky-rocket if something comes up and you miss a payment. These credit card companies definitely do not mess around when it comes to missed payments. Missed payments could also mess up your credit, which is never a good thing.

Home Renovation

Home Equity Line of Payment for your Home Renovation

Pros: A Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) or a Home Equity Loan (HEL) are excellent options and can be extremely beneficial. HELs are a second mortgage on your home, they usually have a fixed interest rate for the lifespan of the loan, and you all of the money in one lump some. In most cases, they have you pay back the principle and interest within fifteen years or so with monthly plans. That’s not too bad of a payment plan, if you ask me.
Cons: Yet another process that can get pricey, after transactions and closing costs, this can feel like a primary mortgage. No one wants to pay more than you have to, so if this is the option you’re choosing, be sure to do your research.

Financing with Wells Fargo for your Home Renovation

Pros: At Builders Surplus, we now offer 6 months financing with 0% interest! You can see your dream project come to life and not have the hassle of interest for a half year.
Cons: Eventually having to pay interest if you’re not planning to pay your project off within that six months. And if you don’t, then you’ll have to go through the agony of paying interest. For more information on this, check out our financing page.

Home Renovation

Financing with Cambria for your Home Renovation

Pros: This is the perfect option if you’re looking to renovate your dream kitchen. Cambria, a countertop company we work with, will finance up to $55,000 with a purchase of one of their products! Side note: You only need to purchase 2 sq. ft. of this beautiful Quartz product to quality!  Now, unless you’re going extremely extravagant, and I’ve seen some of them, don’t doubt it, but $55,000 should cover your renovation. And all you’d have to do is choose one of Cambria’s fine countertops to install in your kitchen. It’s a win-win.
Cons: I mean, the only con with this option is being limited to just one brand of a countertop, but once you see the selection, you’ll soon realize it’s not a con at all.

Financing with Synchrony for your Home Renovation

Financing with Synchrony is another great option! They also offer 6 mo. financing with 0% interest. They also offer Holiday Special Financing, which is 18 mo. of financing with 0% interest during all holidays! Tired of the same ole gift-giving, year in and year out? Do something unique this holiday season and give the gift of a dream renovation! If you have a question about dates or any other details, feel free to come in store, ask an associate, or visit our Financing page.

White Kitchen: Timeless, Versatile, and Budget Friendly

The white kitchen trend has been around for decades, and we don’t see it loosing steam any time soon. White kitchens have remained so popular for several reasons. We’ll go over the reason that the white kitchen trend has been a staple of the interior design community for years, and just why that may be.
Kitchen Cabinets White Kitchen

White Kitchens are Truly Timeless

First, white kitchens have a timeless look, so you don’t have to worry about your brand new kitchen design becoming outdated. While some pieces can become out of date, or your tastes may grow away from some choices you made, your white cabinets and/or countertops, the basis of your white kitchen, will remain desirable. Whether you choose a white laminate, Carrara marble, or white quartz, the look will remain solid. There is nothing “trendy” about white, so it going out of trend is not a possibility. Other colors may come and go as the top choice during certain times, but white will never drop off the map.

HCTAL306_Contemporary-Kitchen-Breakfast-Area_s3x4.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.966.725

Vast Versatility

White kitchens are incredibly versatile. Your kitchen cabinets and kitchen countertops are by far the most expensive pieces of a kitchen remodel. Because of this, choosing cabinets and countertops that you and your family will be happy with for years to come is a very important choice. If you go with the trendiest cabinets of the moment, but that trend happens to go out of style 5 years later, you’ll either be stuck with a kitchen that you don’t really like anymore, or you’ll need to reinvest in cabinets that you like better. Both options are undesirable. This means that you should think extra hard about your cabinet choice particularly. Going with white kitchen cabinets gives you so many choices. A simple backsplash or cabinet hardware change can dramatically change the look and even style of your kitchen overall. If you decide that you want another refresh, you can always switch out your countertops as well. Depending on your preferences, this can be fairly inexpensive or take a bit more money, but the choice is always there. Replacing countertops is much easier than replacing cabinets. If you want a pop of color, you can always add accessories on your countertop as well. White goes with everything, so switching up your accents, your curtain colors or your paint colors is a breeze. You never have to worry about having a specific palette to stick to.

Mixing colors with white is an easy way to switch it up!

Budget Friendly

Kitchen Cabinets

With any kitchen remodel, you can make it affordable, or expensive, depending on the choices you make. When going with a white kitchen, you still have those same options, but many of them offer the same exact look but at different price points. For example, our in stock Unfinished Alder Shaker cabinets are perfect for someone looking for an affordable white kitchen remodel. These cabinets can be painted or stained any color you choose, but look so great painted white. Not only is white a timeless color, but shaker is a timeless style of cabinet. These cabinets are so budget friendly that I always recommend them. Unless you’re looking for all the bells and whistles, these cabinets will be sure to please. They are all wood construction and are very durable. You can buy individual pieces to upgrade them as well, like trash can pull out systems, lazy Susans, and even soft close drawer extensions! This same style of cabinet can be found in double and triple the price, but ultimately, the look is the extremely similar, if not exactly the same.
Kitchen Cabinets White Kitchen

Countertops

If you want an all white kitchen, which is both trendy and timeless, you can go with a few countertop options, and again, what you spend is up to you, although you can make it very affordable. White custom laminate can be made to look solid white, like a quartz you might find, or exactly like a Carrara marble. We also offer an instock laminate that is white with grey swirls, which looks great with a white cabinet. You can choose a real Carrara marble, which is still a decently affordable option (especially at Builders Surplus) when compared to some other granite or quartz choices. Finally, you can go high end and choose a white quartz. You can still achieve the same look for less, though.
White kitchen farmhouse budget remodel

Backsplash

White subway tile works great with white cabinets or in an all white kitchen. White subway tile is one of the most affordable backsplash options you can find. While you don’t have to go all white, it is a very classic look. There are many other affordable white mesh back tiles that you can choose as well, like our new White Wooden Mosaic. Want to add a pop of color to your all white space? Backsplash is the perfect place to do it. You can change up your look very easily by a backsplash switch. While it still requires effort, it is still MUCH easier than replacing cabinets!

How To: Do a kitchen remodel on a budget

If you haven’t already, most homeowners can probably agree that if they had their choice of rooms to renovate, a kitchen remodel would probably be on the top of their list. We spend so much time in our kitchen, whether it be cooking for the family, snacking, helping the kids with homework, or entertaining. But why do they have to be so darn expensive? The cost (or assumed cost) can be a huge deterring factor in some people taking the steps to change a room they hate into a room that brings joy, beauty and functionality to their homes and lives. In this article, I’ll show you that the $50,000 kitchen remodel ideal is not always the case, and that you can do a kitchen remodel on a budget – any budget. As a Millennial with limited funds, my husband and I moved into a home that needed a complete gut renovation. The stress of thinking of how to pay for it made me get creative in how I would get the look I needed for a price we could afford. While it took us a year, we now have an amazing looking kitchen that cost us a total of about $2,500. Here are some of the ways to accomplish a kitchen remodel on a budget in your own home.

Every Kitchen Remodel On a Budget Needs Priorities

In order to do your kitchen remodel on a budget, you’re going to have to prioritize your wants and needs. What is most important to you? If you MUST have granite or quartz countertops, you’re going to have to get creative with your cabinets or tile. If you think you can’t live without custom cabinets, your countertop budget is going to need to take a hit. We all have things that are important to us, and figuring out what yours are will help the process go smoother and stay on budget. bigstock_83103200_Female-Hands-Framing-Custom-Kitchen-Design-Drawing-and-Photo-Combination.

A Kitchen Remodel Can Be Done In Stages

Another misconception often shown on your favorite HGTV show is that if you want a kitchen remodel, you should just knock it out all at once. While that may be ideal, it’s not often feasible. A kitchen remodel on a budget could need to be done in stages. Keep in mind that you can’t get new countertops until your cabinets are in place, so typically if you are buying new cabinets, this must be the first step. It’s also difficult to live without a countertop, so you will most likely want this done next. Tile, shelving, and fixtures can be done last as long as you have something to use in the meantime. If this is the way you need to structure your remodel, get a plan together. Put it on the calendar and honor your commitment to it.

Be Patient. Shop Surplus.

As a surplus store, we get new items in on a weekly basis that are offered at a huge discount. These products could have been discontinued or have not met the exact color standard of the manufacture, but are 100% quality and unused products. However, when they’re gone, they’re gone. You can save a lot of money by stopping in often and seeing what new surplus products are available for your remodel. If you are patient, it can really pay off.

How to Save On Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets are most likely you’re #1 expense in a kitchen remodel. But, it doesn’t have to be expensive. For a kitchen remodel on a budget, you need to save on cabinetry. You have several options here. First, determine if your cabinets can be salvaged and upgraded, or if they need to be replaced completely.

Outdated Cabinets:

If your kitchen cabinets are simply outdated, consider painting them instead of replacing. You won’t believe what a good coat of paint and some new hardware can do to the look of kitchen cabinets. Sometime you can play into the retro feel of your old cabinets and make them fit right in after a facelift. Some crown moulding can also go a long way in upgrading the look of your cabinets as a whole for a relatively low price. Building a “box” on top of 36″ cabinets and adding crown on the top, then painting the box, can give the look of ceiling height cabinets as well, which is another high end look that you can achieve for less.

Un-useable Cabinets:

Go stock. Some people want custom. In that case, prepare to spend more. But if you’re flexible, this is the way to go. Our In Stock Unfinished Alder cabinets is what I choose, and I am such an advocate! At about $67/lin. ft, the price is unbeatable. They are a classic shaker style and can be painted or stained any color your heart desires! I chose robins egg blue, which would have cost me a fortune if I had wanted custom cabinets in that color. You can easily update the in stock shaker cabinets with some glass doors for a high end look. Ask us about how to do this in store! Our Honey Ash are a raised panel, and I think they look awesome painted a white or grey. Going stock doesn’t mean bland or boring. You can still put your personal touches on these cabinets to make them your own. Kitchen Remodel on a Budget

New Cabinet Hardware For a New Look

Cabinet hardware is one of the easiest, most inexpensive ways to give your kitchen a facelift. Check out the difference from the simple hardware change below. Many older kitchens have noticeably older hardware styles. Update them and see the immediate difference! Cabinet hardware Upgrade

Floating Shelves Vs. Upper Cabinets

Floating shelves are a hot trend right now, but I feel that they will always look good and stand the test of time. Many people opt for floating or open shelves as opposed to upper cabinets. This can save you big money! You can make the shelves yourself or purchase them for a much lower price than a cabinet. Make sure you have dishes that you’re ok to have on display, or just buy some that go with the feel of your kitchen for a great statement in itself! That’s how to do a kitchen remodel on a budget! floating shelves

Bargain Backsplash

Wallpaper Instead of Backsplash

For a kitchen remodel on a budget, you need to save on backsplash. Some people will be morally opposed to this, but I happen to love wallpaper. You can get a very eclectic look by opting for wallpaper instead of backsplash, or in addition to it. You may spend a small amount on backsplash for the area right next to your countertops, but go for a dramatic look by taking the wallpaper to the ceiling instead of going to the ceiling with your tile. wallpaper backsplash

Beadboard

Another way to save on backsplash is to use bead board. This classic, cottage or farmhouse look may not work for everyone, but if you like it, it can offer huge savings. Its easy to install yourself, too! Beadboard Backsplash

Subway Tile

Ceramic subway tile is another great bargain backsplash option. This elegant, classic tile will always be in style and goes with virtually every design taste and cabinet design. At about 30-40 cents per piece, it is a great value. You can definitely install it yourself, although for large spaces it can take some time. Smaller spaces are a breeze in my opinion.

DIY Tile Installation

If you want to save some money, learn to install your own tile. You can rent wet saws from home depot for about $70 a day. Do your research and learn how to use it before you rent so that you’re not paying for the machine while you’re still learning the basics. A mesh back tile or subway tile would be the easiest to install, although you may want to stay away from intricate patterns like arabesque. Although it is a mesh back, it’s not too easy for a new DIYer. Check out this video on how to install subway tile backsplash.

Creative Kitchen Countertops

Countertops are your other big expense. Get creative with these countertop solutions.

Butcher Block Countertops

While butcher block countertops CAN get expensive, you can find some very affordable wood countertop options that will cost less than granite (in most cases) and quartz that will add some serious character to your home. butcher block coundetertops

Laminate Countertops that Imitate Marble or Granite

Laminate countertops are your most affordable countertop option. The technology has greatly improved in their manufacturing and you can get laminate that looks like marble or granite. If you don’t care about stone, go for the same look at a lower price. laminate countertops

Prefab Granite (Prefabricated)

At Builders Surplus, our prefab granite countertops start at $39.99/sq ft. Fully Installed! That is more than a 50% discount from most granite countertops. Prefab granite countertops works for MOST kitchen layouts. See if this is an option for you! There are 8 colors to choose from that will give you the high end look for less!

Concrete Countertops

Your price on concrete countertops are going to heavily depend on the contractor you find to do them. The majority of the cost involved is labor. Shop around and find a contractor that will do it at a discount, and concrete countertops become a very attractive option for a pretty affordable price! They are also extremely low maintenance and durable. Concrete Countertops We hope this has helped you realize that a kitchen remodel on a budget is possible! Pre-mixed Mastic vs. Powder Based Mortar

I’d like to dig into a construction element known as “mastic” today, and more specifically, the two forms it’s available in. If you’ve never heard of mastic, then you’re in for a little treat because it’s actually pretty neat stuff and has a variety of uses. Before I give too much away, let’s first discuss exactly what it is.

Mastic is an extremely strong adhesive most commonly used in a construction setting. It’s what builders use to seal windows, doors, cracks, but it’s most common usage is hidden beneath your feet. The substance is perfect for setting and bonding tile to concrete or underlayment board due to its properties. Once dried, it is nearly impossible to come off.

Trust me, I’ve had the honor of having to bust out a tiled floor that had been installed in a heavy traffic area for 20 years. Two words: Chisel and hammer. It’s 100% not how you want to spend a Saturday afternoon. Sounds pretty neat though, right? It’s origin is just as interesting. Mastic, coincidentally enough, derives from the resin of the “mastic” tree. Scientifically, this tree is named Pistacia lentiscus, and can be commonly found in the Mediterranean region, specifically Greece and Turkey. Now that you know a little bit more about it, let’s dig into the two forms.

Pre-mixed Mastic

Advantage:

In pre-mixed form, the adhesive tends to be a bit more solid, a little more consistent, making it easier to work with in most instances.

For example, if you’re installing tile for a standup shower, it would be more prudent to use the pre-mixed, so your material isn’t slopping around everywhere, creating waste.

Gravity can be a nuisance when doing projects like tiled showers or backsplashes in your kitchen and bathroom. If you’re not too careful, your workspace can resemble a typhoon rather quickly. And the cleanup is horrendous.

There’s also the convenience factor. When you purchase this kind of mastic, it’s literally ready to go. Take the lid off, grab your trowel, and get to work. It’s as simple as that, BUT like everything else, the convenience of it being pre-mixed comes at a cost.

Disadvantage:

Depending on where you go, the price comparison is going to be different, but generally speaking, pre-mixed is ALWAYS going to be more expensive. Covering the same amount of square feet, you can typically purchase a bucket of pre-mix for $35 and a bag of powder based mortar for around $16.

It also doesn’t dry as quickly as powder-based mortar, especially if you’re using large tiles. In my experience, we always let shower tiles dry for up to three days before we let the customers use it. Just to be safe. Another thing, if you have to “double float” an area on a wall or the floor because it’s not level, pre-mixed can be a bit of a pain.

Powder-based Mortar

Advantage:

When working with floor tile, powder-based mortar is MUCH easier to work with, especially when working with an uneven floor.

Since you have to mix before applying, you are in complete control over the consistency, allowing you to manipulate if you need a more solid foundation in a certain area, or something a bit “runnier” and easier to work with.

If you’ve ever worked with floor tile then you know exactly how difficult it can be to ensure that every piece is consistently level. No one wants a rocky road in their hallway. I’ve always found the mortar much easier to spread across larger surfaces.

Mastic is a gummy substance, and it can seem like you’re putting much more effort than you need to across a wider surface. With mortar, simply mix it so the consistency isn’t so dry, and it spreads like butter.

Obviously, there are a lot of factors that come into play here like room temperature, how level the surface is, what size or kind of tile you’re using. But for the most part, mortar is the way to go in larger areas. Also, it’s way cheaper than premixed mastic. There’s a reason why, though.

Disadvantage:

The process of making it can be crazily monotonous, not to mention messy. Plus, there’s the inconvenience of having to keep mixing when you’ve finished your last batch.

Maintaining the same consistency takes a bit of practice, as well. I can’t tell you how many head shakes or sighs of disapproval my father has given me because one batch it perfect in consistency and the next is terribly dry or way too runny. It does take practice, and I’ll go ahead and tell you, if you can’t stand the feeling of dry hands for hours on end, powder-based mortar is not for you. Just throwing that out there.

Using this form of tile adhesive takes some extreme precision, too. Not just in the aspect of consistency, but of neatness, as well. Long story short, things can get horrifyingly messy if you’re not used to it.

My dad and I have a very simple approach when it comes to using these two forms of tile adhesives. Simply stated, we use the premixed when we’re working vertically (shower tiles and backsplashes) and powder-based on horizontal surfaces (floor tile). We’ve done enough tile projects to know gravity can be your worse enemy.

They’re both outstanding products, really. It just depends on the type of work you’re doing and your personal preference. Much like Android vs. iPhone in that regard. Take your pick. Good luck on your tile project!
