Custom Countertops: Butcher Block and Concrete

Today, we’re going to talk about a couple of pretty unique and insanely intriguing custom countertops. It’s because of their out-of-the-box design that we love them so much, and I’m pretty sure you’ll come to adore them, too. In this post, I’ll lay it all on the countertop and give you reasons why these particular styles have captured the interest of homeowners across the nation and why they continue to be a hot, trendy style in kitchen and bathroom design. As countertop experts in Louisville, Newport, and Cincinnati, we are here to share our expertise on these two unique countertop options.

Custom Countertops: Butcher Block

There’s no denying it – they’re edgy. I mean, they’re not called custom countertops for nothing. Unlike the typical granite or marble, these countertops have a more creative, quirky feel to them. The butcher block is a natural at maintaining the traditional country home or cottage style kitchen setting, and because of its natural tendencies, it persistently looks fresh, giving the impression that it’s just been cleaned. There’s versatility in them, too! Since it’s made of wood, you can apply any color of stain and compliment the other features in your kitchen or bath to tie everything together. If the color doesn’t grow on you after a period of time or you simply want to switch it up a little bit, there’s a cost-effective way to make that change. Simple, too. Even with a sealed finish, it doesn’t take too much elbow grease to sand down and refinish the butcher block countertop. Then, when you’re done, apply that new color of choice. See, change doesn’t always have to be difficult.

Another thing, I bet you’ve probably already guessed it, but you’ll never need a cutting board again. Depending upon the finish applied to it, you can slice-and-dice all you want on these bad boys with no worry about knife trails. It’s truly a chef’s dream. The longevity of this style is one of its greatest appeals, though. With a simple cleaning solution (water and vinegar), you’ll keep that same shine and finish decades, yes, decades later. Now, if that doesn’t pique your interest, then take a look at the pictures. Nice, right? See what I mean about the different finishes and colors of stain. Listen it’s your house, your kitchen – make it your own with a sleek, unique style like this one! At Builders Surplus, we’re happy to provide you with such a style. Butcher block is a special order product, so please contact one of our designers to discuss your butcher block countertop options.

Custom Countertops: Concrete

Concrete countertops provide a whole realm of possibility. It’s concrete, so it obviously has to be poured. This means you can mold the concrete in any fashion to make it your own. There’s an abundance of really cool, off-the-wall designs that can make a kitchen or bath truly one of a kind. You can mold the edges how you want to. Don’t like hard-cut, 90° angles?  Well, smooth it out, and give your custom countertop the kind of curvature you want! I really appreciate this feature because, if you’re like me, you’ve turned a corner too sharp and been subject to that merciless, pain of the corner jab. But, you’re probably not like me and know your way around a kitchen.

Custom countertops

With that said, these custom countertops are incredibly durable and very near impenetrable to common damages including chipping, scratching, and cracking.  The finish protects it from pesky stains, too. Consider it an instant repellant to spaghetti sauce, wine, or grease. The maintenance on these slabs are almost too easy. Warm, soapy water usually does the trick, but if you want to get really crazy, you can use pH cleaner, as well. Either way, this style is designed for simplicity.

While you may think that if you can pour quick dry concrete, you can DIY concrete countertops. Well, that’s probably not the case. While they may seem like an easy DIY project, they are far more complicated to install than you might think. The main concern is getting every single bubble out of the concrete. If you don’t, you risk cracks, which make this stunner more of a bummer. Our suggestion, use a professional. Use reputable sites like Thumbtack or Home Advisor to find reputable installers. You can see reviews from past customers and they have already been vetted by the company.

Metal Kitchen Faucets

“In 2016, metal will assume a more dominant role in kitchen aesthetics…” – Sam Ferris, Houzz Contributor

Kitchen Faucet
Metal is one of the biggest trends that is up and coming in kitchen design. Industrial style is moving in with the rustic and more and more people are fusing the two styles together. However, some homeowners will go with small helpings of metal, like kitchen faucets to gently bring in this new aesthetic. Replacing your kitchen faucet could be just what you need and one of the more simple steps to updating your kitchen!

Bold Fixtures

With more and more design trends moving towards a more streamlined, scandanavian look people are still wanting to have that piece that makes people say “Wow!” More homeowners are going towards using bold fixtures.
Some people think of ever faucet as being the same. Which if you really take a look down the plumbing aisle, you’ll notice that faucets have styles all their own as well. Some are tall, some are short, some are simple, some are ornate. Kitchen Faucets can have cool and unique features, one or two handles and they can come in all sorts of colors and finishes!
Choose a faucet that compliments or stands out from the rest of your kitchen scheme, without overpowering it! There’s no reason the faucet couldn’t be eye-candy as well!

Now that you’ve probably noticed that not all faucets look the same, you’ll also see that they don’t all do the same thing either! The biggest feature that we’re seeing more and more with kitchen faucets is the added benefit of automation!

French Country Kitchen: Get The Look

French Country Kitchen, French Country Design Style   How do you get a French Country Kitchen, you might ask? Well, that’s why we’re here. French country style originates in, you guessed it, France! It is a European based style that has crossed the big lake to America, and many other countries around the world. When you think of French Countryside, you think of sunshine, lavender fields, and fresh blossoms. It is an old world style that is still fresh and up to date. Many people would love to design a French country kitchen, but don’t know where to get started. I’m going to give you a run down on how to design your perfect French country kitchen and home . There are many elements that contribute to the French Country style of home decor. The look is always rustic, welcoming, and nostalgic. This look can fit well in newer homes as well as older homes. The French Country style has such a warm and fuzzy feel that will fit perfectly into your home as well. Shop-Granite-Colors

Cabinet Styles for a French Country Kitchen:

I think that a raised panel or full overlay kitchen cabinet door work best for a French country kitchen. A glaze is preferred, such as our Ginger Creek Antique White Kitchen Cabinets. Distressed finishes are also a great choice for French Country kitchen cabinets. French Country Kitchen Cabinets   Colors used to decorate in the French Country style come from all over the color wheel. Beautiful Yellows and Golds, bright reds and burnt rust, grass green and hunter green, and especially blue. Turquoise, cobalt blue, light blue, and aqua tones are often present in French Country style. Pinks and whites are also popular choices. Neutrals break up the colors, like natural woods, black oil rubbed bronze or grey accents. French Country Kitchen Blue

French Country Materials:

Fabrics:

Materials used in a French country kitchen are easy to spot. They are decorative and have a distinctive look, usually looking like illustrations or floral patterns. Children can be seen playing and ships can be seen sailing. These materials add the cherry on top to a perfect design. You can also find plaid and gingham patterns. French Country Material

Building Materials:

You will find a lot of relcaimed wood in a French country kitchen. You will usually see granite countertops or butcher block countertops. Natural materials are what you’re looking for. Rough painted plaster walls are popular, beams as seen below, carved wood furniture detail, and simple textures. Natural and tumbled stone are typical of the flooring or fireplace surrounds and beadboard is a popular backsplash choice, or just something to accent with. Copper pots and pot racks are also typical of a French Country Kitchen. White-French Country Kitchen I think an arabesque tile looks great in french country style kitchens, like this Highland Park Antique White Arabesque pattern. French Country Kitchen Arabesque Tile

French Country Floral:

Peonies are the French country flower, in my opinion. I see them in so many French country themed rooms, and it makes sense because they look so perfect with the delicate details. The pink next to the fresh white and colorful patterns of French Country style just bring a smile to my face every time! French Country Kitchen Lighting:

Lighting for your French Country Kitchen should be easy. Stick with wire-y chandeliers, lantern style light fixtures, circular chandeliers or beaded chandeliers. French Country Kitchen Lighting

Subway Tile: Turning Basic Backsplash Bold!

Subway tile is considered a classic in terms of interior design and renovation. This simple tile can come in a variety of materials such as glass subway tile, marble subway tile, ceramic subway tile and porcelain subway tile. No mater the material, the shape is always the same recognizable rectangle. While it is a minimalistic design element, it is by no means boring. However, there are multiple ways to spice up your subway tile to make it an even more interesting feature in your bathroom or kitchen. Below are 8 ways to turn this basic backsplash BOLD!

1. Covered in Color

This arctic ice glass subway tile is a stunner. This color can coordinate with so many different color schemes and design styles, working with masculine elements as well as feminine. There is no limit in terms of color options for subway tile, so let your imagination roam!

2. Dark Grout Delight

This is one of my favorite ways to put your own spin on subway tile. There are actually numerous grout colors to choose from, but most stay with a standard white or cream. My favorite is grey or black when using a white subway tile. It definitely makes a statement and will separate your space from the rest!

3. The next grey-te thing in subway tile

Grey has been on trend in the last year, and the subway tile department is no different! This gorgeous Highland Park Dove Grey Subway Tile has an incredible crackle finish that is completely unique! This backsplash tile is handcrafted, making every piece unique. Grey is a neutral that can easily replace the typical white tile you may have been considering before, and will work very well with many colors and styles!

4. Peculiar Patterns

Instead of going with the same old subway pattern, try mixing it up! There are many ways that you can make it your own, like the windmill pattern shown to the right, or the perpendicular. You can even go vertical and side by side for a simple, clean look.

5. Happy In Herringbone

The herringbone pattern is a favorite of mine, and it works perfectly with any size or color of subway tile. While the installation may be slightly more difficult than the standard, the look you achieve is well worth it.

The new trend in subway tile comes in a larger format. These 4 x 12 pieces featured below can make a space feel larger. I can’t wait to see how many people start to embrace this new size!

8. Handcrafted Creations

Handcrafted goods are not only in style, they are unique and beautiful. The variations in each piece make it something to admire. It’s just another way to turn an old favorite into something a little bit more fun!

It's Natural: Color Inspiration from Nature

I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to natural textures and scenes, of old architecture and macro imagery, of my favorite color palettes.  Some of the most gorgeous color palettes can be found outdoors and with a little help, you can come up with an entire scheme for a room.  You’ve dreamed, you’ve built, you’ve remodeled.  The walls are up and the floor is done, so what’s next?  The room’s design!  But where is a good starting point?  I am into design that is centered around color palettes and I use color theory to aid in setting the mood for a room.  Do I want it dark and calming, warm and cozy, trendy and fresh?  There are so many different avenues you could choose, but I think the best way is by taking inspiration from nature.
Today, I have put together four color palettes that utilize the great outdoors as interior inspiration.

In Hot Lava Color Palette

Color Palette Inspiration Red Navy Grey

The Great Outdoors Color Palette

Color Palette Inspiration Purple Yellow Neutral

Bachelor Pad Essentials

When most people think about bachelor pads, we envision 20-somethings living in a crowded, unkempt apartment with hand-me-down furniture and pizza boxes serving as a coffee table.  It is the kind of place mothers dread thinking about and girlfriends pray they don’t have to set foot in.  But there’s nothing a little tough love and brainstorming can’t fix!  So, fellas, I have a list of bachelor pad essentials that will help you have an amazing cool-guy home that isn’t full of feminine design.  Let’s get started.

Table for the Team

Bachelor Pad Dining Room Table
From poker players to tabletop gamers, every bachelor needs a table where he and his buddies can gather around for some fun.  There are so many designs you can go with that aren’t over the top.  Simple is best, yes?  Go for more length than width, with thin planks and legs.  It won’t seem bulky and you can fit a few more chairs around it.  For those of you in a relationship, you can’t go wrong with a dinner that isn’t being served on a coffee table in front of the TV.

Workspace / Fun Place

Bachelor Pad Industrial Desk
Whether you are plugging away on a project, checking social media, or invested in a MMO campaign, you’ll need a place that is multi-functional.  I like the rough, industrial aspect of this workspace design.  It is dark, a little dramatic, and it looks like it was pulled out of a long, lost wartime factory.  You’ll need plenty of drawers to store important documents and it can also serve as an area to display awards and (a few) of your prized possessions.

Centered Entertainment

Bachelor Pad Essential TV Mount
You aren’t in college anymore, so there is no need to display giant speakers and have your TV on a stand your old roommate’s friend’s friend handed down to you.  Make the television a focal point in the room with a mounted stand.  Shelves on either side of it make for more storage space.  You could also invest in a wireless surround system that doesn’t require cords to be strewn all over the floor.

Treat Yo’ Windows

Curtains in Bachelor Pad
Curtains aren’t only for women and serve for purposes other than decoration.  They are important for insulation, reducing noise, and preventing flooring and furniture fading in a bachelor pad.  Depending on your style, you could choose masculine or neutral colors (cobalt, grey, hunter green.)  There is also the trend of geometric, minimalist patterns (pinstripes, honeycombs, plaid.)  Dress up your windows; we promise you won’t regret it when you want to sleep in late.

Eye for Art

Bachelor Pad Unique Art Ideas
For those of you who can’t stand a bare wall, we’ve got creative ideas to display your favorite things.  An architect or designer or could have engineer prints made of his favorite projects; a sports fanatic could have vintage memorabilia displayed in shadow boxes.  You don’t have to purchase new art–use the things you have!  This creative design of tools hanging from the wall is both aesthetically pleasing and you already have everything you need to get handy around the home.  Other ideas include: framing comic books, collaging old nautical maps, and using floating shelves to show of your growing vinyl collection.

For more ideas on how to style your bachelor pad, check out the Pinterest board we have put together.  If you have an amazing design idea in your own home, feel free to tag us on Instagram @builderssurplus and we’ll be sure to re-gram it!

Express Yourself with Espresso Cabinets

I love minimalism and subtlety — espresso cabinets are the epitome of just that.  Right now, the trend for kitchen cabinets is white, white, white, and as much as I appreciate white cabinetry, the upkeep can be an absolute nightmare.  For people like me (with three pets) and my friends (with young kids), the maintenance of light cabinets sounds like more work than I am willing to put in with my limited time.

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet

The argument from several designers is that espresso is out, it is overdone, it can be too bold of a statement in a centrally focused room of a home.  However, I think it is all how you style a cabinet.  Take the Ginger Creek American Shaker in mocha.  At first glance, it is just a simple, dark cabinet, but upon closer inspection, I think the tones are rich and warm.  Those qualities coupled with unique design can turn these cabinets from simple to simply elegant, charming, sophisticated, subtle–whatever your style may be.  Here are some design ideas when shopping for espresso cabinets!

Modern Mocha

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
Keeping this palette as neutral as possible, I am letting Cambria’s Praa Sands custom quartz countertop do all the talking for this kitchen design.  There is a lot of movement in the quartz, a beautiful variation of color, and strands of neutral tones complement the espresso cabinets.  Pairing it with the sleek geometry of the Elements Stanton pull and the clean lines of our metallic gray subway tile, this kitchen design is both refined and understated.

Shop Now Kitchen Cabinets

Textured Tones

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
If the espresso cabinets in this design were an outfit, the California gold legder panel backsplash would be its jewelry.  There is so much warmth and it is dense with a wild, outdoorsy character.  I wanted that to be the focal point and draw the eye up from the cabinetry to the natural beauty of the Colosseum Quartz countertop.  These countertops are extremely durable, resisting scratches, stains, and heat to remain looking beautiful for years.  Top the cabinets off with the Madison pull in the brushed oil rubbed bronze finish and you end up with a provincial kitchen with a posh twist.

Compromising Coupling

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
A lot of the times, couples that are renovating houses cannot decide between their own two styles.  Nine times out of ten, a room’s design is going to eventually be based on one person’s idea.  Since a kitchen is one of the few gathering places in a home, it should be a destination for compromise.  This design idea is all about mixing elements.  From the urbane espresso cabinets to the rustic vibe of our custom built butcher block countertops, we can see there is a lot of masculine hints to the room.  I like the idea of blending that with dainty white penny backsplash and the rounder, softer Madison knob by Elements.  This makes for a beautiful half-and-half composition.

5 Ways to Make Your Galley Kitchen Feel Huge

Galley kitchens have become one of the few things to make home buyers and owners cringe (besides shag carpeting.) They are known for being closed-off, unwelcoming, and dark. In the age where everyone wants an open concept floor plan, the galley kitchen is quickly added to the cons list when someone is looking for a renovation project. But what if we told you that you can turn your galley kitchen into a space that you won’t dread working in, or spending time in? Here are five easy steps that will add that wow factor to your galley kitchen's small space!

Galley Kitchen Must Have's To Maximize Space

Utilizing Light

The first step is allowing natural light to come into your kitchen. For those of you with a space that has a window, do away with the curtains and blinds. A bare window will open up your kitchen without the demolition of taking out a wall. And if you don’t like a naked window? Dress it up with some trim and add small succulents for an additional touch of green!

Do Away With Dark

Dark cabinetry can be beautiful, but it can also make your kitchen appear much smaller. Think of your galley like a photograph: if you matte a picture in black, it is going to seem more enclosed. So open up your space with our Wellborn cabinets! They are the perfect addition to any kitchen, including a galley, and offer a variety of tremendous selection of hardwoods. And for that extra depth: select cabinets with glass-fronts.

Regain Space

Another easy way to make a galley kitchen appear stifling is by decluttering your countertops. Employ your cabinets–they are there for storage! If you absolutely must leave an appliance out, make sure it has clean lines and a minimalist design.

Pops of Personality

Glass and textured backsplash can add that special dimension and personality to a kitchen. Today, there is so much backsplash available, but for a galley kitchen, we suggest reflective surfaces, geometric patterns, or unique colors. The reflective surfaces definitely increase the appearance of space in the room, the same way that adding big mirrors in a small space give it a larger feel.

A small space like a galley kitchen can easily be overwhelmed by the type of lighting you choose. Small pendant lights and recessed canned lighting are the way to go when you are switching up designs. They do not take up a bunch of room and leave the headspace of your kitchen open and airy. There are so many unique and beautiful pendant lights available as well that will really add a unique touch to your space. Working with the length of the room instead of against it also makes the space feel larger, and spreading out pendant lights in a galley kitchen is a perfect way to do that. I hope you’ve found these tips helpful! If you have any more questions on how to maximize a galley kitchen, comment below!

Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide

Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: FeaturedA
Copper Sinks – when you say copper sinks you might think of an old brown and green bowl sitting on a vanity in the old west before there was plumbing; however, copper sinks today are much different than they were way back when, they are a beautiful statement piece to any kitchen design or bathroom remodel. They’re link shiny red-brown chameleons – constantly changing and always stunning to look at and watch change over time. There are many reasons why you might want to add a copper sink to your kitchen design or bathroom remodel; it could be their unique and diverse style or their ability to be antimicrobial. Whatever the reason for your consideration of a copper sink, there is no denying that it will be the talking point of your guests around the dining room table.

Properties of Copper Sinks

Copper sinks are as unique as they come, in both style and function. When seeking copper sinks you should look for sinks that are 99% pure copper, preferably with that remaining 1% being zinc, which will add to it’s strength. Do be warned that when ordering copper sinks from China, India, or the Middle East as lead can be used as a filler because it has similar workability to copper and is inexpensive. Lead is also harmful to humans – so be cautious when ordering outside of the United States.
Copper is an extremely soft metal which means that it can be shaped and hammered into different designs to turn an average bowl into a stunning masterpiece!

Copper Sinks: Mount & Style

Like any other sink, copper sinks also come in a variety of styles and mounts. They can be unadorned or extremely elaborate – it all just depends on what you’re looking for and what you’re willing to spend. Sink mounts refer to how the sink is installed and will look on the countertop, while style generally refers to the finish of the product.

Decorative, Farmhouse

Decorative sinks tend to be more ornate and have intricate designs either hammered or stamped into the metal. They are extremely elegant and with the reactive and changing nature of copper sinks they will always look a little different the next copper sink! Farmhouse, is the kind of mount, and is not unique to copper sinks. Farmhouse mounted sink are also called an apron mount where the front of the sink is exposed or overhangs from the the cabinets below it. Farmhouse is a great look and feel to go for with more country, or traditional style kitchens. Now, just because these two are listed together doesn’t mean that’s how all copper sinks are. You can most certainly get a decorative sink with a different mount or just a plain farmhouse mount with no decoration.
Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Decorative Farmhouse

Hammered, Drop In

Hammered sinks are less ornate than more decorative style sinks, however they’re more unique than plain or brushed finish copper sinks. Hammered sinks give a faceted look to a shiny sink that has little patina to it, like you’re washing dishes in an amber bowl. When your sink has a more patina’d look to it, it makes the bowl appear more rustic and handmade – craftsmanship like. Drop In sinks are more common because their weight is what largely keeps them in place on the counter top, and thus are really easy to install.
Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Hammered Drop In

Brushed, Under Mount

A copper sink – with little else to it will be eye catching, so if you’re wanting something more simple than what else can be seen on here then looking towards a brushed finish is a simple and understated, yet still elegant solution. Under mount sinks are beautiful because the countertop sits directly above them, giving the space a more modern and seamless look.

Hammered Under Mount

Hammered Finish Under Mount Sinks

Finished, Vessel

There are different kinds of finishes, the kind that I am referencing here are copper sinks that have something other than a wax or sealant to finish them, such as glass or acrylic. The bonus to this is that the copper will stay in all it’s original, shiny, beautiful, glory – if you can’t stand slight inconsistencies or change in your sink finish then this is the way to go! A vessel mount sink appears to be a simple bowl sitting atop your vanity or countertop. These are decorative of themselves and make great statement pieces without needing any kind of finish! Vessel sinks come in many different shapes and styles. If you want a unique looking sink that goes beyond just copper, vessel sinks are as unique and as out there as you can get!
Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Unique Vessel

Pros & Cons of Copper Sinks

Everything in this world has its ups and downs. When it comes to sinks it just depends on what you want, and how much you can spend. If antimicrobial properties are important to you then you’re only bet is copper.

Pros:

  • They’re beautiful: It’s that simple. Copper sinks are some of the most beautiful and unique! The fact that they’re made from one sheet with no seams also makes them like works of art. They can be hammered and shaped to almost any dimension. Copper sinks do form a patina as they’re exposed to water and air, so if you love the original color you can have it coated to preserve it’s beauty. If you like their reactivity, the ever changing color and patina of copper sinks are just a bonus to their beauty. This goes beyond copper sinks being beautiful, they literally have countless combinations of finish and style. Some look like regular sinks and others look like works of art!
  • They’re antimicrobial: This unique property of copper sinks makes them favorable for kitchens, while bacteria can live on many sinks surfaces for weeks at a time, bacteria on copper sinks can only last a matter of hours. However, the EPA states that you shouldn’t coat (paint, lacquer, varnish, wax, etc.) your copper sinks if you wish to keep the antimicrobial nature if the metal.
  • Copper is 100% recyclable: Copper retains 95% of it’s original value when being sold after recycling. In fact, it’s likely that the copper sink that you’re getting is already made from previously recycled copper.
  • They’re durable: Depending on the gauge (thickness) of copper that your sink comes in will definitely affect its durability, the thicker the copper the less likely to dent it will be. Copper sinks are resistant to corrosion and rust, making it an ideal choice for a sink material.

Cons:

  • They’re highly reactive: If you want your copper sinks to maintain their color you’ll need to coat them – which will rid of you of the antimicrobial properties of the metal as well. Acidic foods and drinks, abrasive cleaners, and extremely hot or cold cookware can change the color of your sink, darkening it and leaving odd colored spots. Granted, as the patina darkens everything will become more uniform as time progresses. However, unless they’re sealed periodically it is extremely hard to maintain a copper sinks original shine.
  • They’re expensive: More than just being an expensive choice for a sink, they’re also expensive to repair. Copper is a very soft and malleable metal, so it can be easily dented and warped, meaning that you’ll likely need to repair it more often than other sink materials. Keep in mind that thinner gauge copper sinks will dent more easily than thicker gauge copper sinks.
  • They need more maintenance: To keep it’s shine and finish in tact for as long as possible you should dry the sink with a soft towel after every use and you should be careful with what products you use to clean it as some more acidic cleaners can discolor your sink. Warm water and gentle soap is usually all it takes.

Corbels & Moulding: The Finishing Touches

Hey everyone, this is LeighAnne and today I’m going to give you some interesting ideas about Corbels and moulding. If you have been looking for a way to add some finishing touches to your beautifully designed kitchen, consider the timeless elegance of decorative corbels & moulding. Corbels and moulding offer many unique ways to put the finishing touches on your custom design with a distinctive flair while bringing architectural style and structure into your kitchen.

Corbels and moulding put the finishing touches on your custom design & bring architectural style and structure into your kitchen.

Corbels & Moulding – Historical Use

Historically, corbels and moulding were used primarily for architectural support. Corbels were well known to provide support weight for heavier pieces in a kitchen, such as cabinets, countertops, oven hoods, shelving and more. Moulding was historically used to solve architectural challenges by adding visual height and providing better proportion to a room overall.  Over time, modern homeowners and interior designers have discovered the aesthetic value and ornamental beauty that corbels and moulding have to offer as finishing touches in home decor.

Corbels & Moulding – Sizing Things Up

In addition to having a very practical function, corbels and moulding can also make a statement of style and importance.. The corbel and moulding size you choose can set the tone for your whole kitchen. You should ensure that the scale of corbels and moulding complement the size of the structure that they are being applied to.

Sometimes designers stray away from using larger corbels because of their size, however, a larger corbel can spice things up up and bring attention to a basic kitchen island or cabinet. On the other hand, choosing a more commonly sized corbel (around 10” – 15”) will convey a message of harmony and oneness. You are the best choice for sizing up what would work best because the right size will be based on the overall style of your home.

Corbels & Moulding – It’s All In the Details

The corbel and moulding sizes that are used can set the tone in your kitchen but the ornamental detail on corbels and moulding can determine the style and design throughout your entire home. Corbels come in a diverse range of designs, ranging from simple elegance to classically inspired offering a true one of a kind finishing touch unique to each home. Corbels and moulding is available completely unadorned and in it’s natural wood state or it can be ornately carved with the most elaborate motifs and designs showing faces and cherubs or fruits and vines. Some of the more popular motifs include acanthus leaves (inspired by the Greek Corinthian columns), seashells and scrolls.

Corbels & Moulding – At Builders Surplus

We have some of the most unique corbels available at Builders Surplus. Recognizing everyone’s need for unique expression, we have carefully selected many of the designer corbels we have available in stock. For instance, this wood corbel features the alluring celtic trinity knot. The celtic trinity knot has a long tradition of representing ancient moon phases, the life cycle of women and the Father, Son & Holy Spirit of the Catholic trinity. My personal favorite is this wood corbel featuring an elegantly carved fleur-de-lis symbol. It is a very popular choice among those who embrace the long and rich history of Louisville, KY. You know your style better than anyone though, so browse through all our unique corbel and moulding pieces by stopping in one of our showrooms in Louisville or Newport. Once you identify your style preferences, these are the kind of choices that will fuel your design process.

Corbels & Moulding – True Colors

Corbels and moulding can be painted in any color to coordinate with your kitchen’s decor. You can also choose to stain the corbel to match other wood accents and showcase the fine grain pattern of the wood. When selecting a stain or paint color for each corbel, consider selecting a finish similar to your existing kitchen cabinetry for a well coordinated look.

Corbels & Moulding – In The Kitchen

Corbels and moulding find themselves right at home in the kitchen. Since the historical use of corbels was to support the weight of larger objects, think of all of the heavy pieces in your own kitchen. Anywhere that support is needed is an ideal place for a corbel. This not only helps to balance the look but adds a perfect finishing touch.

  • Under counter tops – especially those made from heavy materials such as granite or marble.
  • With islands and counter overhangs where chairs or bar stools provide seating for family members and guests. (Take caution to position the corbel carefully so that it doesn’t get in the way of the seating)
  • As a support for kitchen cabinets.
  • Supporting an open shelf, especially for heavy items. (i.e.cast-iron cookware)

Now that you have an understanding of the myriad of ways that corbels and moulding can provide the perfect finishing touches for a kitchen, consider taking a closer look at your home to determine ways in which you can utilize these architectural embellishments to spice up your home. Call or come in and speak with one of our designers  if  you have any questions about using corbels or moulding in your home design.

All of the choices below are available at Builders Surplus, some being in stock, ready to take home, and some custom order with a short turn around time. Comment for details on anything you see below!

Our 6 Favorite Amerock Hardware Choices For 2016

1. Amerock Oil Rubbed Cup Pull & Allison Knob

Oil Rubbed Bronze-Cup-Pulls-Amerock-Hardware Allison Knob
Oil rubbed bronze is a very popular finish right now. This finish leans towards the rustic or farmhouse style, but can be used in any kitchen, as long as the colors allow. Cup pulls and round knobs are some of my favorite cabinet hardware choices, because it’s simple, while also making a statement. The cup pulls and round “Allison” knobs above scream understated sophistication & Souther charm for your kitchen cabinets.

2. Amerock Antique English Lion Drop Pull

Amerock-Hardware-Old-World-Lion-Drop-Pull
Another member of the Allison Collection, this is an affordable piece of cabinet hardware. The design is unique & memorable. It will give your kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanity the Old World Charm you’re dying to achieve. Leave them in the Antique English finish, or paint them white as shown above, to bring your kitchen remodel together. This pull could also work with a traditional interior design style in your kitchen or bathroom.

3. Amerock Hardware Brushed Copper Pull & T Knob

Amerock Hardware Brushed Copper Pull T Knob Brushed copper is a very hot finish right now. This finish resembles rose gold and can work with many kitchen design ideas. The brushed copper 16mm Pull from Amerock is in the Chandler collection, and the square knob is from the Mullholand collection. This style works very well with Transitional design. This style is a mixture of contemporary and traditional. This interior design style is supposed to be even more popular this upcoming year. Because of the rectangular shape of the knob, it works very well with the rectangular glass tile mosaic backsplash and glass front kitchen cabinets.

4. Amerock Hardware Vintage Glass Knobs

Amerock-Hardware-Glass-Cabinet-Knobs This has to be a personal favorite of mine, as I am notoriously in love with vintage and shabby chic styles. The glass or crystal cabinet knob is the perfect accessory to give your kitchen or bathroom this look. These are the ultimate in jewelry for your kitchen cabinets. Amerock hardware has several different styles of crystal or glass knobs for your kitchen cabinets, with many different shapes and finishes for the backing of the knob. This style of cabinet hardware can also work well with traditional, farmhouse, or transitional styles.

5. Amerock Hardware Traditional Sash Pull

Amerock-Hardware-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze-Sash-Pull The sash pull is one of the more commonly used styles for kitchen cabinet hardware. It has a very elegant and traditional shape and works well in most styles of kitchens, although it is not commonly seen in contemporary or modern spaces because of the curved aesthetic. Again, the oil rubbed bronze hardware is very popular, and can seem farmhouse or simply traditional. Standard round knobs are usually used in conjunction with these, but you can use them on drawers and cabinets alike.

6. Amerock Hardware Modern Bar Pull

Amerock-Hardware-Modern-Cabinet-Hardware-Contemporary-Bar-Pull Last on our list from Amerock Hardware is the modern or contemporary style bar pull. This bar pull can be found in a number of finishes, but the one shown here is brushed nickel. It comes in short lengths, long lengths and very large sizes as well as smaller. These can be used on drawers and cabinets as well. The sleek lines and straight angles give it the modern vibe and this finish as well as a chrome will coordinate nicely in a contemporary space.
There you have it, our top 6 picks for Amerock Hardware in 2016. While these are our favorite, the possibilities are endless. Visit www.amerock.com for all their knob and pull cabinet hardware styles. Kitchen Organization: Clean & Clear for the New Year!

Kitchen Organization: Featured Image

Kitchen Organization: Clean & Clear for the New Year!

It’s out with the old and in with the new in 2016! We’re all scrambling around to meet the resolutions that we’ve made to eat more healthy, get in shape, and to get more organized! Kitchen organization is often overlooked – taking a back seat to cleaning out your bedroom, attic, or other space that seems to attract everything you will never need. However, the kitchen is – in my opinion – the epicenter of the home. In my fathers kitchen he even has a TV in there so he can eat, read the paper, and watch football without having to leave the room! This year resolve to change that! Get your kitchen organized to keep up with life and the rest of your resolutions! So how do you organize a kitchen? We’ll give you some of our favorite kitchen organization tips to organize the different areas of your kitchen and how they’ll help you in other aspects of your life!

Pantry Organization

Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Pantry Organization The pantry is always in a state of semi-organization in my house. All the canned stuff goes on this shelf, except for one or two particulars. Cereal is at the bottom, and the floor is just covered in unused shopping bags. Other than that you can put whatever your want wherever you want – if I’m hungry enough I’ll dig for it. Going through your pantry, organizing it and throwing out old food stuffs will help to declutter the space. Set up some kind of organization system, large (wide) magazine holders hold canned goods well and shoe organizers that hang on the back of the door are a life saver when it comes to organizing spice packets! A popular tip seen on Pinterest is to use plastic bins (or wicker – if you want that rustic-chic look) to organize the different kinds of food-stuffs you have, like pastas in one bin and after-school snacks in another. Cynthia Ewer posted a great, in-depth article about organizing your pantry over on Organized Home where she states that “A Pantry’s Not a Place: It’s an Attitude.” You can read that article, here, for more tips to get your pantry into shape! Remember that canned goods are often still good way after its marked date; unless the metal is starting to rust, it should still be good to keep. If you do feel that you want to get rid of it consider donating your unwanted (but still good) canned goods to your local food bank!

Refrigerator Organization

Kitchen Organization: Refrigerator Organization You probably already go through your Refrigerator every once in a blue moon to get rid of expired goods and clean it out. But having a system in place can help to rid you of this process and not have to touch another moldy bowl again! Of course, if you don’t go through your fridge that often, my first piece of advice is to start to. Go through, organize and clean your refrigerator at least once a month, more if there’s any extra messiness. When I worked at my local deli at the beginning of college we had an extremely strict cold-box organization system – and we had to clean it out every week. My boss at the time had previously worked at a high-end restaurant as a cook and this is apparently how others taught her to organize a professional kitchen refrigerator. The system organizes the foods by how long they need to be cooked; foods needing little to no cooking time at the top to raw meats and foods that need to be cooked to higher temperatures/for longer at the bottom. This kind of kitchen organization reduces food contamination. So it’s organized similarly as follows:
  1. Top: Foods that can be eaten raw or need little to no cooking. – Leftovers, beverages, deli-meats, ready-to-eat snacks.
  2. Middle: Raw foods that will be cooked. – Veggies and eggs.
  3. Bottom*: Raw ingredients that must be cooked, but need to be cooked longer or to higher temperatures than the shelves above it. – Meats.
  4. Door**: Condiments and items that can be left out or do not have to be refrigerated.
* The bottom of the fridge typically has a couple of drawers that are designed to keep in humidity for fresh produce like fruits and vegetables. While these items can be kept higher in the refrigerator if you decide that you must put your produce in a bottom crisper drawer, keep one drawer specifically for raw meats and another for produce to prevent contamination. If your drawers are on top of each other, stick with the top down rule – meat in the bottom drawer, veggies in the top. ** The door is the warmest part of the fridge, so anything that must stay cold like milk, raw meats, or eggs should be kept in a colder part of the refrigerator.

Kitchen Organization: Food DriveFood for Thought:

The more often you’re able to go through your pantry or fridge – the more often you’ll be able to clear out old, unwanted, or unhealthy foods – and we all know that the less often that pack of cookies is staring you in the face when you open the pantry looking for a snack the more likely you’ll be to stay on track with eating cleaner! Likewise, if you can see fresh fruits and veggies in your refrigerator you’ll be more likely to much on them from time to time!

Shelf & Cabinet Organization

Kitchen Organization: Horizontal Cabinet Trend An upcoming trend that I briefly mentioned in last weeks blog is the move towards horizontal cabinetry. This trend is highlighted by more shallow depth and wider cabinets and shelves. It’s being more commonly seen in upper wall cabinets than base cabinets as decreasing depth there would mean sacrificing counter and prep space. What this kitchen organization trend aims to do is to allow for more room to display and organize kitchen ware such as cups, plates and bowls and also cooking utensils without having to layer things backwards and have to go searching for something. Kitchen Organization: Pull Out Shelves An alternative to this are pull out drawers that are also helping to ease the hassle of having to find a skillet or other item in the back of your cabinet. Builders Surplus offers two different lines that can do some version of horizontal cabinetry and pull-out shelving. Wellborn Cabinets and Waypoint Living Spaces (our custom lines) both offer some options to control the depth of your cabinets and add pull-out shelving!

Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: FeaturedB

Kitchen Design Trends & Resolutions for 2016!

Happy New Year everyone! Now that 2016 is in full swing I’m sure that everyone is making some changes in their lives for the better. Here are some Kitchen Design Resolutions to start the year off right and make your space even more functional and beautiful – because let’s face it a cluttered kitchen is so last year. Most trends and resolutions are sticking around from 2015 it seems, but there are also some new and fresh ideas that 2016 is bringing to the kitchen table in kitchen design! We’ll get started off with our top 3 kitchen design resolutions so you can get your space in order and prepare to transform your kitchen into the heart of your home.

Kitchen Design Resolutions

Our kitchen design resolutions are simple tasks to get your kitchen organized, decluttered, and ready to be transformed!

1. Get organized.

The pantry is all over the place, small appliances out in the open to run a muck, you’re digging through the silverware to find the whisk that you may or may not have – but you swear you do. Organizing your kitchen and surrounding spaces isn’t as overwhelming as it seems. In fact, the pantry itself can be done as you go grocery shopping. Utensil organizers and pantry hacks are your best friends in the kitchen! Magazine racks or old soda boxes are great for storing canned goods; and shoe caddies are useful for storing wine! Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Pantry Organization

 2. Declutter

Organizing and decluttering might seem like the same thing to some people, but in reality they’re two steps on the road to kitchen design bliss – think of them as two sides to the same coin. While organizing might mean that you have your stuff together decluttering is getting rid of and hiding away that which you don’t want to be seen. Building a pull out shelf for small appliances or your trash bin is a fantastic way to begin to declutter your counter space. Kit Our favorite organizational products that are the 11 Minutes or Less Kitchen Organization tools. Like their name says, they can be installed in 11 minutes or less and they have so many different products for different uses!

3. Out with the Old and In with the New

Resolve to update your space – however you want. Whether your aim is to sell your home in the coming year or if you just want to make the space more your own. Go ahead and plan to update the flooring, backsplash, cabinets, or the entire kitchen if you want to!

New year new you, and new kitchen! Whether you’re wanting to plan for the future by updating your kitchen to suit your tastes or if you’re wanting to make it more likely to sell these trends are what you should look our for!

1. The Neutral Color Trend

Grey

You might remember back last June when we had a series of blogs all about the grey color trend. Well, that trend isn’t dying out anytime soon. In fact the grey colors have boomed creating an explosion of neutral color trends. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Grey Kitchen

Black & White

Black and White – whether together or on their own – are classic colors. If you’re thinking of using one of these in your kitchen consider White for a more classic approach, or black for a more daring and bold look! Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Black & White

Color Pop – Blue

Pale blues have been on the rise in many traditional kitchen color schemes – pairing it with white shaker cabinets for a chic cottage feel. Other kitchens have also gone for the color pop look – using a basic neutral color and adding an accent wall or accent kitchen cabinets in a bright, fun color. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Blue Color Pop

Natural

Going for the natural color of wood is also a popular trend that we’re beginning to see more of. Especially unfinished wood. Contrasting unfinished cabinets in light and dark woods are becoming very popular. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Wood

2. Materials

Wood

Speaking of wood. Reclaimed wood is an integral part of the modern rustic trend we were seeing last year. It brings age and texture to your space, and can be used to make everything from shelves, to tables, to backsplashes! Other woods are also popular because of the popularity of spaces that feel more natural and take on those natural characteristics. Wood Pallet Shelves DIY

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel appliances are sleek, modern, they go well in almost any space, and they’re easy to clean. Simple stainless steel hardware on wood cabinets updates the space to create a more contemporary finished look while also providing a contrasting element to the look.

Ledge Stone

Ledge stone comes in small single lay tiles and in large format tiles. It can be used over an entire space, as a backsplash, or other accent in you kitchen design. It’s popular for it’s general ease of installation and the impact that it brings to a space. Ledgestone_Backsplash

3. Mix & Match

Everything is moving more and more towards the contemporary styles as far as trends are concerned – but that doesn’t meant that the traditional or the classic have completely fizzled out. People more and more are mixing and matching colors, and textures, and finished to bring a uniqueness to their kitchen designs. Breaking up space with different colored countertops or different materials, pairing modern fixtures with a rustic style can all be used to mix and match a space just for you. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Mix & Match

4. Styles

Contemporary style on the rise – more and more we’re seeing a want from homeowners for clean, simple lines in their renovations. Modern rustic is also very popular – it’s a great way to work in some mixing and matching above (clean lines with an organic feeling stone wall or brick tile). Modern Rustic is a trend that is still in full swing and pairs well in a mix and match style, your can read more in-depth on the trend here. Consider a transitional kitchen if your selling to compromise between the growing contemporary trend and the popular traditional trends. If you’re wanting to remodel for yourself take the Waypoint Style Quiz to find out where your tastes in home decor and style land!

5. Functionality, Commercial Grade & Specialty Appliances.

Horizontal cabinetry, deep shelving, commercial grade, and specialty appliances are on everyones wish list for things to update their kitchens with! More and more people are looking for the luxury in appliances and how they can make their lives easier and their cooking better. It’s all meant to make the kitchen a more functional friendly space to be in and make cooking an enjoyable endeavor instead of a nightly chore. Amish Kitchen Cabinets Misconceptions

Many people think that Amish Kitchen Cabinets are the top of the line in cabinet construction. There are many misconceptions related to Amish Kitchen Cabinets that we would like to clarify, in an attempt to assist in your renovation and search for the best kitchen cabinets for you and your home. These misconceptions relate in no way to our feelings about the Amish or their businesses, nor do they apply to every single Amish Kitchen Cabinet business that you will find. However, these misconceptions have been found in a large percentage of Companies selling Amish Kitchen Cabinets. When you are in the market for new kitchen cabinets and are looking for a product that that fits with you and your values, these are things to keep in mind and are questions you can ask. We will also be comparing Amish Kitchen Cabinets to Wellborn Kitchen Cabinets in many instances, which is not an Amish made or owned company. This company offers what most people are looking for when they think Amish Kitchen Cabinets are the best choice for them.

The Term “Amish Kitchen Cabinets” is a Marketing Strategy.

Most people are under the impression that if they see cabinets or furniture marked ‘Amish Made’, that it means the quality is top of the line and that it is 100% handcrafted in the USA. This is definitely a misconception. In many cases, the cabinetry is actually less hand crafted than other kitchen cabinet lines that don’t even particularly focus on that aspect. Many ‘Amish Kitchen Cabinets’ are not even 100% made in the USA. They import drawers and doors from China and outsource other pieces as well. In some cases they are only ‘Assembled by the Amish’. Amish Assembly would have very little positive effect on the quality of a kitchen cabinet, and can actually negatively effect the quality depending on the outsourced products that are being used. If you are dead set on purchasing Amish Kitchen Cabinets, do your due diligence in making sure that your cabinets are ACTUALLY being hand made in the USA. In other cases, the company may only be ‘Amish Owned’ and the cabinets are not even “Amish Made”. This means you are paying a premium for a cabinet that is no better than any other. You’re paying for a tag line. Handcrafted Kitchen Cabinets - Amish Kitchen Cabinets Builders Surplus

Wellborn Cabinets are Hand Crafted In The Truest Sense.

Wellborn Cabinets is a high-quality kitchen cabinet line that we offer in our store. Wellborn cabinets is a family owned and operated business and it’s cabinets are 100% hand crafted in the USA. They literally start with a tree and turn it into your kitchen cabinets, start to finish, in their facility. Every piece of the cabinetry is hand made and the doors are hand-sanded for the perfect finish. When we think of “hand crafted cabinets”, Wellborn is the truest example of this. Make sure that you buy your ‘Amish kitchen cabinets’ or ‘Amish-Made Furniture’ the same way that you would any other piece, on its own merits. Don’t get caught up in the quaintness or nostalgia of the marketing approach. Evaluate the criteria that makes a kitchen cabinet a quality piece of craftsmanship, such as solid wood, dovetail drawers, sanding techniques, finish, and overall construction.   Shop Products at Builders Surplus

Are Amish Woodworking Shops a Step Above The Rest?

This is another big misconception. Amish woodworking shops are virtually the same as most any other woodworking shop in the USA, except they are not attached to the electrical grid, which is forbidden by their culture. Instead of typical electricity, they will usually have 1-2 huge diesel engines running at full speed to supply the power that they need for their shop.  Many assume that their “old school” tools make for a better end result, as opposed to traditional electric tools. This is another misconception. The only real difference in tools is that they use Hydraulic energy instead of electric. Other than that, the approach to furniture or cabinet making is largely the same as any other wood working or cabinet building shop in the United States. Child-Labor With Amish Kitchen Cabinets Builders Surplus However, one major difference in some Amish shops is the fact that children could be doing the crafting. The Amish are not subject to the same child labor laws that other companies are, so they are able to have children under the age of 18 working in their shops, and are not required to have them on payroll or offer insurance like all other businesses are required to do. This means that young children and teens are doing dangerous jobs, like working with saws and dangerous tools. While allowing children to work on family farms is more widely known and slightly less frowned upon, having them work in manufacturing is a totally different ball game. To some, this is an ethical issue. To others, it may not be an issue at all. This information is only here to help you make the best decision for you and your household. Read more about child labor violations here.

Are Amish Kitchen Cabinets 100% Green and Eco-Friendly?

Most of the time, no. This is another misconception. In the attempt to not be tied in to the electrical grid, generators with diesel fuel are being run around the clock in manufacturing shops. This is most definitely not eco-friendly. Because they do not have to comply with OSHA regulations, they do not have to follow the other mandatory “green” regulations that other companies do, or strive for. Some Amish companies pride themselves on being green or eco-friendly, so again, we are not saying that this applies to all Amish Manufacturers, but this is something to dig deeper into if you’re concerned about conserving energy.   Shop Products at Builders Surplus   Another issue is the fact that they are not required to help reduce tree deforestation. Wellborn Cabinets, for example, plants a tree for ever tree they cut down. They are also a Certified Green Manufacturer. The benefit of this type of certification is that those who are concerned about this can easily have piece of mind knowing what a company does or doesn’t do to help the environment. Wellborn also takes the sawdust that their shops produce and turn it into energy, burning it cleanly to reduce their carbon footprint. If Green & Eco-Friendly manufacturing is what you’re looking for in new kitchen cabinets, then make sure you’re asking the questions that will lead you to the truth. Eco-friendly Kitchen Cabinets Amish Kitchen Cabinets Builders Surplus When searching for new kitchen cabinets, remember that this is an investment. If you pay too much, you’re loosing money in the long run. If you don’t pay enough or you settle for sub-par quality, you will be unhappy, or will have to purchase more before you should have to. This is why it’s very important to make sure that if you’re interested in Amish Kitchen Cabinets, you are not just paying for a name or a tag line. It’s also important to make sure that if you are truly in search of hand crafted, 100% made in the USA kitchen cabinets, that is what you get. If ethical manufacturing is important to you, get the piece of mind that what you’re buying is 100% green and eco-friendly.  Knowing these common misconceptions & the right questions to ask will help you in your search for the perfect kitchen cabinets. Kitchen Cabinet Paint: 5 Colorful Ways To Increase Value

Transforming your kitchen and increasing the value of your home could be as simple as a coat of kitchen cabinet paint. Ask any expert what the number one upgrade with the greatest return is and the answer will be the kitchen. So break out of the traditional wood zone and let color liven up the heart of your home. We’ve pulled together 5 colorful kitchen cabinet styles to show you how kitchen cabinet paint can help add personal style and increased value to one of the most important rooms in your home.

5 Colorful Kitchen Cabinet Paint Styles:

Two Toned Effects:

You can safely combine different hues in your kitchen without encountering a color clash or contrasting overkill. Kitchen cabinets that have a lighter color that’s dominating a darker color help to open up space and prevent cabinets and shelves from feeling too crowded. The overall look is subtle yet elegant. Using two tones will work well for an understated modern look or you can let your soul fly by choosing something funky and eclectic.

Black with Bright Colors:

Black cabinets are very hot right now. Black can infuse a kitchen with a sense of boldness and mystique.  But for some, it can be heavy and oppressive. The way to pull it off so that it’s nothing short of invigorating for everyone is to buoy it with a wood grain look or a bright, bold color that will make it pop.

Take On Neutrals:

Neutral hues tend to be perennial favorites for most people. Neutral colors work with almost any design style and are the ultimate for a practical yet elegant appearance.  Try thinking beyond the typical white and ivory color schemes.  There is certainly nothing wrong with using one or both of those, but consider pairing it with a contrasting color. Using stronger neutrals will give you the option of pulling in colors like grey or dark brown that can have a more pronounced presence.

Natural Wood Blended With Painted Surfaces:

This is a great option if you are torn between the beauty of wood grain and the vibrant look of paint colors. So how about using both? Try using a stain or varnish on your wall cabinets and choose a complementary paint color to make the wood stand out. Top 10 Favorites from Homearama

Homearama 2015 just ended last week here in Louisville, Kentucky. It was hosted at the newly built neighborhood community of Spring Farm Lake and showcased 11 beautifully designed and decorated homes. We at Builders Surplus took a little field trip to tour some of the homes, snap some photos, and gain insight on some new home trends & building materials; but that doesn’t mean that we were completely objective – although we do try. We were excited to pick out some of our own favorites in terms of spaces & materials to share with you! In fact, we even made a little video to showcase our top 10 favorite interiors from Homearama this year!

Check out our Top 10 Favorites Video!

10) Rustic Bathroom Design.

Our favorite part about this bathroom was the bourbon barrel and copper sink! This room was beautifully overwhelming with texture from the wood, stone floor, and stuccoed walls I was half expecting bourbon to start flowing into the sink. A DIY liquor bottle soap dispenser would have been the perfect finishing touch.

9) Unique Wood Look Tile Flooring.

This wood look tile flooring was in a laundry room, and frankly we just couldn’t get enough of the contrasting colors within it! The browns and oranges tied in very nicely with the rest of the colors in the room and the blue planks cooled down the small space without being too overwhelming. This may have been my favorite homearama flooring over all. What a stunner!

8) Sliding Barn Door.

This door ties back nicely with one of our recent homearama blog posts about the modern rustic trend, found here. It’s a dark stained sliding closet door. It fit the trend of the room, being country chic and added a uniqueness to the room. It was a nice little surprise considering it was the only door like that in the house – an honor usually grated only to the front door.

7) Contrasting Kitchen Countertops

These kitchen counters took our breath away. The dark island stood out against the many lighter colors of the room and gave the whole space a more elegant look. We also loved how the island was black with a white granite top and the rest of the cabinets were white with a black granite top! We also have a blog about how to design your own contrasting island, here.

6) Classic Bath Design + Clawfoot Tub

Truly, it was just the bathtub that had us gawking. The contrasting white with dark claws and hardware were beautiful – like claw tubs and freestanding tubs always are. The towel storage above it was also a popular trend that we saw  throughout the tour. These can be ordered in our Wellborn or Waypoint cabinet lines in store.

5) Stone Backsplash.

Homearama 2015 sported a lot of tile and glass backsplashes, both in the kitchen and the bath. This one stood out as a classic tumbled travertine stone with the silver accent tile as a simple touch that exuded understated rustic elegance. The metallic boarder paired with the matte stone contrasted perfectly with the dark wood cabinets. The color of these cabinets are very in style right now, with the grey toned brown adding another rustic touch.

4)  Shelf Storage.

Maybe we’re just suckers for dark cabinetry, but we also loved how open these espresso cabinets made the room feel. A great way to display your wine glasses!

3) Incredible Wine Cellar

We’re starting to see a trend amongst ourselves. Dark, grey toned cabinets, angled cabinetry shelving, and liquor of course. This was a beautiful sealed off space, next to the kitchen in the basement. Its a perfect adult getaway. It was actually the same room that sported some of our favorite cabinetry seen at number 4 favorite. The wine cellar came complete with a small tasting table and, frankly, looking from the outside, the room felt like a work of art.

2) Modern Rustic Bath.

We just did a blog post earlier this week about the insanely popular trend. The modern tub contrasted against the largely classic decor, however, the hardware and stand alone wood table brought it all together beautifully. It’d be a tough decision whether to take a bath or shower that day, but once you go in one you wouldn’t really want to leave anyway.

1) Open Shower and Desk.

We’re not sure if that’s a working desk or a makeup vanity, I suppose it could be both, either way the unique, open layout of this bath is what engrossed us. Multiple people could easily take a shower at once and it certainly is a much more beautiful and elegant open shower than the one your high school locker room had. This room is easily our number one because of it’s unique layout and modern style, even if we can’t entirely agree on what the desk/vanity is really used for.
We really enjoyed this years Homarama and can’t wait for next year! If you’re looking to remodel your home feel free to stop by either of our two locations in Louisville or Newport, Kentucky and ask one of our designers how you can get the Homarama look for your home – at an affordable price! Please, share, tweet, or reblog this article if you enjoyed it or found it helpful in any way! Also be sure to sign up for our newsletter so you don’t miss out on great promotions!

Granite Edges: The Finishing Touch

There are many things that go into purchasing a new granite countertop, such as deciding on the color and choosing between the different granite edges.

When you first sit down with one of our kitchen designers, the first step will be to take measurements of your kitchen, or work off of the measurements that you provide.

If you are completely gutting the kitchen, you will have the flexibility to virtually choose exactly what you want for your space.

After layout, the next step is to decide on the granite color. This is definitely one of the most fun decisions to make. We offer 20 colors in our custom granite line, and 8 colors in our prefabricated granite.

Lastly, you will choose the finishing touch for your countertops; your granite edge profile. The edge is the shape created and the end of the slab that you will come into contact with on a daily basis.

There are a wide variety of edges to choose from, but our Louisville and Newport, Kentucky stores offer a total of 9 different edges. We will discuss the Basic Edge Profiles, Premium Granite Edges, and Unique Granite Edge Profiles.

Basic Granite Edges:

The four edges shown above & below are some of the most common & are virtually always included at no additional cost, no matter what fabricator you’re using. These are offered free with our custom granite selection.

  • The straight edge is the most basic, with a hard chiseled edge.
  • Beveled edges tend to be more popular in kitchens with traditional décor.
  • The 1/4 and 1/2 bevel is a nice variation on the original bevel that highlights the thickness of the countertop. It allows you to have the decorative edge while still showing the depth of the 3cm stone.

Our granite is 3cm thick, which is the standard width. Anything smaller would be at risk of breaking, and thicker would potentially be overkill and quite costly.

STRAIGHT GRANITE EDGE

The above example is that of a straight edge, sometimes called the “pencil” edge. This is the most basic edge that you can choose, however, with the right granite, it still looks phenomenal!

BEVELED GRANITE EDGE

The beveled granite edge is quite popular. It adds a touch of geometric flair to any countertop. It is not overly ornate, but does add some visual interest.

1/4 and 1/2 BEVEL EDGE

The 1/2 and 1/4 bevel are very common as well. The bevel is less dramatic and is a more subtle touch to your granite edge. The profile is sleek, without being too chiseled. I see this very often in bathroom granite vanity tops. These both have a shorter pitch, which is the flat edge on the top, and a longer rise, which is the bottom edge pointing down. This is a very sophisticated profile that will work well with all styles from traditional to contemporary.

EASED GRANITE EDGE

The eased granite edge is another popular choice. The slight curve adds movement and tames the sharp edges that some dislike. This profile can be seen in many kitchens, old and new. It is simplicity at it’s finest. With the right granite, you simply want to highlight the beauty of the stone, which the eased edge does perfectly.

1/4 RADIUS GRANITE EDGE

The 1/4 Radius edge is a variation on the eased edge. Instead of offering the secondary curve on the bottom, it chooses to only arch at the top. It provides all of the benefits and simplicity of the eased edge. The 1/4 Radius edge is a perfect blend of the Eased edge and the Straight edge..

HALF BULLNOSE EDGE

The half bullnose edge adds a greater curve to the room than the 1/4 Radius or the Eased Edge. Of the basic granite edges, this profile shows off the thickness and sturdiness of the slab.

TOP & BOTTOM EDGE or 1/4 ROUND EDGE

In the 1/4 Round T&B, or Top & Bottom, the profile looks exactly as it sounds. There is a slight curve on the top and bottom of the edge, creating a slightly round, slightly pitched edge that is a favorite among many.

Premium Granite Edges:

OGEE GRANITE EDGE

The Ogee Edge is one of the most widely known and well loved of all of the premium edges. This granite profile is elegant, decorative, and makes a statement. This granite profile looks perfect with traditional styles and adds fair to rustic decor as well. It can be used in contemporary spaces, but it is not something that you see often. Modern looks tend to opt for the sharper or more straight edges.

This ornate profile adds drama and excitement to your space. Although this granite edge is a premium profile, it is included at no cost in our prefabricated granite, making the value that much higher for our clients.

FULL ROUND EDGE

The Full Round Edge, Also called the Bullnose, is a completely rounded profile. This look works best with traditional, transitional, or the rustic/farmhouse style. Again, curves and contemporary don’t always make the best pair. We offer this edge in many of our prefabricated granite as well, meaning that you are getting low price & high quality and design, which is something that you can rarely find in today’s world.

DEEP OGEE EDGE

The Deep Ogee is a variation of the Ogee. It is not one that you see too often, but it definitely makes a statement when it does pop up. The deep swooping edge just screams elegance and high design.

INVERTED BEVEL EDGE

The Inverted Bevel is another one of the premium granite edges you might be interested in. This edge looks very similar to the Knife edge, which we have not listed due to the fact that is is very rare and is not asked for often. However, the uniqueness of this edge can really make your countertops stand out from the rest. In this edge, the steep pitch is going upward instead of downward.

Unique Granite Edges:

ROUGH EDGE

Rough or natural granite edges are really something special. This look will work with any style and really highlights the natural beauty and uniqueness of the stone. This is one of my favorite edges of all!

ROPE EDGE

The rope edge is an incredible profile that you don’t see very often. This edge takes real skill to fabricate and a unique home to put it in. A nautical feel is a perfect fit for this type of edge, but it can work well in traditional or even rustic style homes.

TRIPLE WATERFALL EDGE

The Triple Waterfall edge is slightly more common than the two listed above, but is still considered unique. The three tiers make for a stunning focal point and add interest to your countertops. This ornate style screams elegance and high end quality.

Laminate Countertop Edge Profiles:

Laminate countertop edges are completely different in terms of name, as those that we discuss when dealing with granite or any other solid surface countertop. They names can be quite confusing, actually. The combinations that can be achieved with laminate countertops are endless. They can be just as unique and ornate as those of their solid stone counterparts.

If you have any questions regarding granite edges, laminate edges, granite or granite installation, the team at Builders Surplus is ready and willing to help. We strive for excellence in everything that we do and believe that paying attention to detail is what ultimately sets us apart from our competition. Thank you for reading!
