How To Make Two-Toned Kitchen Cabinets Work For You: A DIY Guide

The trend of two-toned kitchen cabinets is making a comeback after years of all white kitchens consumers are deploying this design tactic to create some interest in their kitchen remodels and it’s easy to see why! With the plethora of kitchen cabinet choices, including the ever-popular shaker cabinets, the dilemma of choosing just one color seems outdated. If you’re considering this stylish design trend for your home, you might be curious about your options and how to successfully implement it. Let’s dive into the exciting world of two-toned kitchen cabinets.

Embracing the Two-Toned Trend in Kitchen Cabinets

Upper and Lower Harmony
A classic way to introduce two-toned cabinets into your kitchen is by selecting one color for your lower cabinets and another for the uppers. A common strategy is to choose a darker shade for the lower cabinets and a lighter one for the upper cabinets. This approach not only creates a visually appealing contrast but also maintains a spacious feel in your kitchen. Consider shaker cabinets in black and white with elegant hardware for a chic look.

Small Kitchens, Big Impact
Even in smaller kitchens, you can enjoy the depth and character of darker tones without overwhelming the space. Two-toned shaker cabinets can offer a perfect balance, bringing a dynamic yet harmonious feel to compact kitchens.

Center Stage: The Island

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

A popular approach in the two-toned trend is to use a bold color or material on the kitchen island. This technique allows the island to stand out as a focal point, while the rest of the cabinetry maintains a cohesive look. For example, a baby blue island can beautifully complement antique white shaker cabinets, adding a unique flair to your kitchen.

Creating a Focal Wall with Two-Toned Cabinets

Another exciting way to incorporate two-toned cabinets is by creating a focal wall. This can be any area in your kitchen that you want to highlight. Adding floating shelves in the same color as your accent cabinets, such as Cherry Autumn, creates a modern, eye-catching feature.

Is Two-Toned Right for Your Kitchen?

Now that you’re familiar with the various ways to use two-toned kitchen cabinets, including shaker styles, it’s time to decide which approach aligns with your personal taste and kitchen layout. Whether you’re remodeling or building a new home, two-toned cabinets offer a unique way to express your style.

Life Is Good When You’ve Got Tile That Looks Like Wood!

Wood Look Tile Kitchen Flooring
I know my father wants wood look tile, he just doesn’t know it yet. My dad constantly gripes about how he has a hardwood entrance to the house but that the rest of it is carpet. He says he’d much rather have hardwood throughout. He also gripes about the cost, and maintenance, and this, that and the other when it comes to the possibility of hardwood. So I’ve come to the conclusion that all he really just wants is the look of hardwood! Well, because I work at Builders Surplus I’ve let him in on the secret. He can have the look of hardwood throughout his home without all of the hassle!

Well, what exactly is this secret stuff?

The secret is Wood Look Tile! It’s made from porcelain or ceramic and can stand up to just about everything that natural hardwood can’t! Thanks to modern technology the detail that is put into the process of creating this style of tile is that it mirrors the look and feel of real hardwood so accurately that even experts are sometimes stumped.

How durable is this ‘wood look tile’?

Wood-look tile can stand up to just about anything that hardwood can and even some things that natural hardwood cannot. For instance, did you know you can put wood look tile in your bathroom and your basement (try that with natural hardwood. Blech.)! Tile doesn’t need to acclimate and it stands up to water much better than other types of flooring, so you’ll never have to worry about it warping or rotting. This stuff is also very easy to clean and maintain! Sure, a well maintained, a real hardwood floor can last you 100 years or more, but on that same note, a tile that is taken care of properly will last you the same timeframe if not longer!

Wood Look Tile: Shop Now
However, porcelain is porous so you will want to clean any spills up quickly or you will run the risk of staining the surface of the tile.
Wood Look Tile Bathroom Flooring

What does it cost?

This is the question that everyone wants the answer to and, actually, it runs fairly comparable to natural hardwood. Some hardwood is less expensive, just like some hardwoods are more expensive than it’s tile doppelgänger. The price of real hardwood will depend on it’s finish and especially on the rarity of the wood being used, with tile you’re main expense is going to be brand and size of the tile.

Will I like the look of tile just as much as real hardwood?

I’m willing to bet that you will! You’ll hear others snicker that wood look tile doesn’t feel like real wood and that the grout that is sometimes used to place the tile ruins the illusion. Daltile wrote a short piece to dispel these myths about wood look tile, check it out if you’re having any doubts.
The other part of this question that isn’t stated is ‘will I like the color(s) offered?’ Again, this answer is yes. Like I said earlier, technology has come so far when creating the look of wood on tile that not only do they use multiple images of wood grain to make sure the pattern isn’t repeated over and over again on a noticeable level, they can make the wood look like just about any color or wood type that you can imagine. There are tiles that reflect a lighter, smooth wood look similar to pine and there are other tiles that have a dark color with a rough texture like distressed barn wood.

5 Renovation Mistakes You Cannot Afford To Make

Anyone who has watched HGTV has seen plenty of renovation mistakes. Any renovation is an undertaking–ask every contractor and every homeowner that has been part of a remodel.  From the accidents that can occur to the ever-growing budget, taking on a reno project requires time, dedication, sweat, and patience.  From our experts to you, we have come up with the list of five renovation mistakes you cannot afford to make!
Home Renovation Free Download Banner

Low-Balling the Budget

Drywall Renovation Mistakes
Surprises are going to happen. Sometimes they are good: like finding original hardwood floors underneath the carpet in pristine condition. Sometimes they are horrifying: like finding asbestos in your home’s walls. While installing backsplash, you might damage the wall and have to replace some of the drywall. Peeking inside the drywall, you could find electrical issues. Then, the next thing you know, you’re dealing with more than just installing backsplash. We suggest setting aside 15% of the total project cost (potentially more for older homes) for unexpected expenses. This is your safety net in the event that unforeseen issues occur. This will give you peace of mind knowing that you won’t break the bank at the first sign of the unexpected.

Floor Drains: the Laundry Room Essential

Laundry Room Drain Mistake
This is one of the renovation mistakes that you may not consider. A laundry room drain is required by code in most areas, but some people still omit it. If there is ever a break in your washing machine hose, you’ll flood your house. A floor drain directs the water into your home’s main drain system. And please, do not try a DIY installation. This can turn into another one of our renovation mistakes.  You will absolutely need a professional plumber, but again, you’ll have peace of mind, as flood insurance is not covered by most basic homeowner’s insurance plans.

Granite, Granite, Granite

Kitchen Design Trends
Of course, it is popular, but granite isn’t the only option for the kitchen.  Renovators could choose a different material for the countertops that can save tons of money in the kitchen!  Our non-granite picks: butcher block, plate steel, or a nice laminate for those who don’t necessarily have the budget for premium marble or granite. Explore the options that will work best for your family to avoid regret down the road. Don’t break your budget trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Hidden Gems

Tile Floor Remodel
Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.  A bathroom membrane system (which goes under tile) prevents popping and cracking, and keeps water from getting into the substructure. Think about it: If you’re spending $15,000 on a bathroom, spend an extra $1,000 to ensure you’ll never have a mold problem. This is one of those renovation mistakes that could end up costing big bucks down the line.

Floored: Ultimate Renovation Mistakes

Beautiful Hallway
Most contractors typically buy 20% extra flooring since it is prone to cuts and breakage during installation. There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to find an exact match if you need to order more during a long remodeling project.  Most retailers often let you return unopened boxes for a refund, so you shouldn’t get stuck with too much material.  It’s also nice to have extra in case of damage down the road. If you suffer and water damage (especially in the kitchen) or a pet scratches deeply or has an accident that stains, you’ll be glad you did.

Our Top 10 Favorite Kitchen Cabinet Finishes

It can be somewhat confusing or overwhelming if you are shopping for new kitchen cabinets. From stained to painted, there are so many options to choose from. Here we would like to discuss out top ten favorite kitchen cabinet finishes with you. We'll start with some of our customer favorites and then work our way into individual fancies. Let's dig in.

1. Painted Silk Cabinet Finishes

The next three, mind you, are all painted finishes. I was talking to one of our top designers and he told me that 75% of all his designed kitchens are accommodated by cabinets with painted finishes. Paint is just right now in the industry, across the board, and when in terms of color — neutrality is usually the go to. Painted Silk is an off-white color, perfect for most styles, designs, and blends beautifully in a kitchen space. On Waypoint’s website, they describe Painted Silk as follows: “This hushed silky finish, in hues reminiscent of vanilla ice-cream, serves as a versatile choice for any living space. With inspired hardware, furnishings and décor, this choice is anything but vanilla.” To me, it’s a finish that fits those who want to keep the neutral tone, but add a little bit extra. Vanilla-Ice cream, they said. Can’t help but to laugh at that.

2. Painted Linen Cabinet Finishes

Our customers are absolutely loving the all-white finishes these days, and it’s like I previously mentioned, it’s paint or nothing for folks, as of late. It’s just a hot commodity for a variety of reasons. It’s clean and exudes an “updated” appearance, if you know what I mean. It’s crisp. The same can be said for the Painted Linen cabinet finish. It’s a sharp-white color that paints, no pun intended, a pretty classic picture. White is as neutral as it gets in terms of style. It’s no surprise that this finish would be a customer favorite. It’s definitely one of mine.     Waypoint speaks of its sophistication, saying, “A crisp, clean, ivory color that can create an open, fresh space, and when styled with monochromatic tones, can feel very sophisticated.” I couldn’t agree more. What do you think?

3. Painted Stone Cabinet Finishes

As far as these painted finishes go, this one is most definitely my favorite. The Stone finish is a lovely, light gray that, while still can be seen as neutral, has a bit of boldness to it that looks stunning in a kitchen space. If you want something edgy, but not overly so for your kitchen cabinets, I’d say this is your best bet. It’s one of those colors that can modify  a mood as soon as you enter the room. I think it’s the uniqueness of it that brings this effect.   It’s one of those colors that can modify  a mood as soon as you enter the room. I think it’s the uniqueness of it that brings this effect.

4. Painted Cashmere Cabinet Finishes

Ah, the Cashmere color is a very alluring one. Once again, I have to reiterate, that the painted finish just gives off a very clean look. This color, as Waypoint states perfectly, looks like the finest, crisply-ironed pair of khakis that you’ve ever seen. In person, it looks like a very light butterscotch.   Waypoint describes this finish with the following:  “This smooth finish is reminiscent of a most exquisite neutral khaki. This versatile and inviting tone is the perfect canvas for styles from traditional to modern.” So, as you can see, it’s still one of those colors that will blend with any style. It’s as glorious as its name.

5. Painted Ember Glaze Cabinet Finishes

Classified as a taupe color, the painted ember glaze cabinet finish is one for the books. Do you see the running trend here? The neutrality of these painted finishes are so sought after because they allow room in design and detail, something that the more, outlandish colors cannot offer. Painted Ember Glaze falls in line with silk and linen in that respect.     Waypoint describes this finish, “A deep taupe glaze warms our Harbor door’s painted finish. The glaze collects in the bevels and contours of the door cut to create a unique hand-finished artistic feeling. It can be dressed up or down depending on one’s taste.”

6. Antique White Cabinet Finish

The Antique White Cabinet Finish is one of our favorites here at Builders Surplus. It offers a high end look with an extremely affordable price. It’s a timeless style — hence the name — and looks absolutely breath-taking in a kitchen space.     Much like Waypoint’s Silk, Ginger Creek’s Antique White has the off-white color tone. One of our classic finishes that continues to be a monstrous hit in the kitchen remodeling industry.

7. Divinity Java Glazed Cabinet Finishes

Wellborn Cabinetry has a beautiful glazed finish line featuring a number of gorgeous colors and finish techniques, like Heritage, Antique, Olde World, and Seaside. The Divinity Java Glazed, as you can see below, is a soft color that embellishes the darker tones around it. If you have a strong affinity toward dark browns in your kitchen, then I’d definitely check out this finish. It’s a brilliant one.

8. ColorInspire Glacier Cabinet Finishes

Wellborn has a pretty cool collective of vibrant paint finishes, ColorInspire, that may seem unorthodox by text, but truly amazing once seen in person. In the picture below is a room scene of ColorInspire’s Glacier look. This is where my quirky side comes into the mix of this blog post. Blue is undoubtedly one of my favorite colors. Again, if someone mentioned blue cabinets before I saw them, it would be give me pause, but seeing this finish in action, I’ve not only inspected further, but fell in love with the finish. What do you think?

9. Pebble w/ Carriage Technique Cabinet Finishes

Okay, so I know the name is a little bizarre, but bear with me, here. Hopping onto the Wellborn train again, we have a Pebble (painted finish) but with a bit of a twist.   Wellborn has several finishing techniques, meaning additional cabinet work that makes the appearance look aged or Era-specific. This one, the Carriage technique, features a rub through, small dents, and worm holes — like an 18th century carriage would, perhaps. Beautiful technique. Marvelous in a kitchen space.

10. Glacier Fawn w/ Brush Technique Cabinet Finishes

Wellborn has another Finishing Technique that’s heavily adored — the brush finish. Looks and feels like someone just applied a coat of paint on the surface, texture and all. It’s a beautiful, authentic look.     The technique features “hand applied glaze in a subtle brush stroke overlaying the paint, providing a depth to the finish not seen with standard glazing.”   There ya have it, folks! Hope you’ve enjoyed reading this as much as I did putting it together. Don’t be afraid to tell us your favorite one in the comments!

Backsplash Ideas For Your Kitchen Style!

Today, we’ll be offering up some of the best backsplash ideas for your kitchen that are on the scene this season. Backsplash is the best accessory that you can add to your kitchen to make it unique or give it a real wow factor, so choosing the right tile for you is crucial. In the past, backsplash has been limited to certain shapes, materials, or sizes. Well, the past is in the past, because today, you can use virtually ANY tile choice you please and make it your own, if done the right way of course. Here are some of our favorite picks in no particular order that may be somewhat unconventional, but definitely memorable.

1. Ledger Stone Backsplash Ideas

leder-stone-kitchen-backsplash-ideas

ledger-stone-gold-rush0backsplash ideas

This ledger stone is called Gold Rush, and we offer this in stock, every day. There are 6 different color variations, but the result with all of them is the same: unique, rough around the edges, while still looking high class. It works perfectly with the rustic or craftsman style. Ledger stone backsplash ideas are some of my favorites, because they aren’t overdone & are not seen on a very regular basis, making them even more unique.

2. Arabesque Pattern Backsplash

modern-wall-design-kitchen-backsplashs-ideas

arabesque-antique-white-backsplash-ideas

The arabesque pattern backsplash is probably one of my very favorites in this list. It looks elegant, somewhat vintage, and also works with the farmhouse or rustic vibe when used appropriately. The unique shape catches your eye and keeps your interest. Definitely a more feminine choice, but I have known men that are fond of it as well! We offer the Arabesque Antique White in store as one of our in stock backsplash options, found here.

3. Brick Tile Backsplash Options

stainless-steel-kitchen-industrial-wood-brick-backsplash ideas
capella-red-bric-tile-backsplash

This red brick is actually a TILE, making it that much more appealing! Brick is hot right now, and brick backsplash ideas are gorgeous! It works for both males and females in the industrial style, rustic style, farmhouse style, or even the traditional style. The fact that it’s a tile makes it fairly easy to install, and while this is a custom order product from our store, it has a very short lead time. This Capella Red Brick Tile is definitely a winner in my opinion.

4. Large Tile “Flooring” Backsplash Ideas

furniture-modern-silver-gray-long-subway-marble-backsplash-tile-4

large-grey-tile-backsplash-ideas

This is a definitely a recent trend. People are no longer sticking to the basic, small, backsplash tile to complete their kitchen. Today, it is becoming quite common to take a typical floor tile and install it as your backsplash. This grey backsplash is extremely versatile in terms of color palettes that will match and styles that it will coordinate with. We offer a large selection of this type of tile in store, as well as in our custom order options. To see our in stock tile selection, click here.

5. Traditional Subway Tile With a Twist

wavy-subway-tile-kitchen-backsplash -ideas

Subway tile backsplash is one of the most classic and commonly used backsplash ideas. There are many colors to choose from in several different materials, but this is a new twist on an old favorite. The tiles are no longer flat, but have a wavy texture to them that gives it a “handmade” look. We love it and so far, our customers have too!

6. Textured Pebble Stone Backsplash

modern-wall-design-kitchen-backsplash-ideas

pebble-backsplash-ideas

Click Photo To View Product

This is one of the most surprising of the backsplash ideas, in my opinion. This is typically not a tile that you see used for backsplash in kitchens. I have seen this in many bathrooms, on the floors of showers, etc, but it is so gorgeous in the photo above! It gives it a very zen feeling. That, paired with the neutrals of black quartz countertops and white shaker cabinets, make it a neutral, peaceful kitchen that most people would love to have!

7. Bright Colored Glass Mosaic

Kitchen-blue-glass-mosaic-blacksplash

This is another one of the backsplash ideas that has been primarily used in bathrooms up until recently. The shimmery, bright, glass mosaic tile makes a big statement and gives the kitchen a colorful pop! These are typically best suited with neutral colored cabinets. This blue tile is another of our in stock options in our Cincinnati / Newport location, as well as our Louisville, Ky location.

8. Geometric Patterned Backsplash

carrara marble backsplash ideas
geometric-cararra-marble

Carrara marble backsplash is a popular choice, and has been for years. It is the ultimate in luxury and style. However, the shapes that this gorgeous stone is being made into have definitely changed over the years. The geometric and hexagon shapes are extremely popular right now, in any material, but pair that with the classic elegance of marble, and you’ve definitely got a winner on your hards. Any kitchen would be so lucky to be graced by its presence.

9. Mixed Metals Mosaics

glass-metal-backsplash ideas

Mixing metals with glass mosaics is a great new trend that we love! It adds a bit of shine and glam without being overly girly. The backsplash above is a great choice for men and women alike. It is definitely a great choice for modern and contemporary styles. Get more ideas for other metal backsplash ideas here.

10. Bead Board Backsplash

modern-wall-design-kitchen-backsplashes-13
beadboard backsplash ideas
Bead board is such a simple, classic piece that can go in virtually every room of your home. The rise of the farmhouse style has definitely increased the use of bead board. This is one of the most simple ideas that adds a very lovely touch to whatever space you add it to, which in this case would be your kitchen. This is custom order option available in our store that will make your favorite room stand out in the crowd while adding a cozy, home grown feel.

We hope yo have enjoyed our list of the top 10 backsplash ideas for your kitchen! 5 Brilliant Storage Ideas for Your Kitchen!

kitchen storage-builders surplus

Storage ideas are necessary for home chefs because they are always busy; they lack time to search for cooking items everywhere in the kitchen. Besides that, a kitchen is supposed to look clean and neat. If the kitchen is dirty food might get contaminated.

Introduction

If you lack the best storage ideas, you will have a hard time in the kitchen. When you are able to easily and quickly access any item you need at the kitchen, you will save time. Check out the storage ideas described here to help you organize your kitchen well.

Storage ideas for the kitchen

1.      Ingredients

One of the best kitchen storage ideas is to have all your ingredients at a place where they are visible, for instance at the top of a shelf. You should also arrange them according to family. For instance, you can place spices together, soy and kinds of vinegar together, cooking oils together and so forth.

2.      See clearly

This second one among the best storage ideas recommends getting transparent with pantry staples. In restaurants, for instance, they do not use Tupperware. They use plastic deli containers that can be recycled. They do not cost much and they are easy to stack and you can use them more than five times until they start absorbing food smells. If that happens, then you will need to recycle them and start over. This is a great storage idea that minimizes clutter in the kitchen.

3.      Labeling

This is also one of the main storage ideas. It is recommended to have bulk containers for important ingredients such as rice, grains, flour, and beans. Ensure you label everything just like in a professional kitchen where all items are labeled nicely and they are even dated.

4.      Have pasta

This storage idea recommends using mason jars. You can keep your spices in labeled mason jars. This is a great storage idea which helps in keeping the cupboard neat and easy to move when preparing meals.

You should also ensure that you always have pasta in your pantry since it is a great quick meal to take when in a hurry. One quick recipe is to prepare pasta with virgin olive oil and finish it using red chili flakes and fresh parmesan. We also recommend checking home expert reviews to see other recipes or storage ideas you can try.

5.      Arrange spices according to flavor

This is also a great storage idea. Organizing the kitchen mostly begins with spices. If you have like thirty spices, consider organizing them in clusters which would be used at the same time. For example, sugary spices for baking can be in one place, those that have an Italian flavor should also be put together on another side and so forth.

Another great storage idea is having similar ingredients in one cabinet. For example, you can keep baked goods on one cabinet and canned goods on a different cabinet and grains and kinds of pasta can be put together on a different cabinet.

Conclusion:

We think these are a few of the best kitchen storage ideas. Do you have more storage ideas that you would like to share with others? Write to us and if you have any question, feel free to ask us.

Corbels: 8 Unique Ways To Use Them In Your Home

What are corbels you might be asking? For those of you who don’t know, corbels are structures projecting out from the wall or some other surface, supporting something above it. Pretty descriptive, huh! Some people have never used a corbel, but they can be great for adding something extra to the design of your home. If you’re looking for ways to use them, we’ve compiled a few for you below!

1. Corbels Under Countertops

This is one of the most common ways to use corbels is to put them under countertops to support an overhang. You can use wood or metal, whatever you feel matches the design of your kitchen best! You will generally see these used on islands or peninsulas.

2. Corbels Under Shelves

You can use corbels under open shelves, in your kitchen or somewhere else in your home. These add a beautiful design accent and also give your shelves the support they need. Check out the beautiful shelves using corbels from Brittany at PrettyHandyGirl!

3. Corbels Under Fireplace Mantle

Using corbels under either end of your fireplace mantle is a great way to add a unique touch to what could be a standard looking mantle. You can use them to extend your mantle farther than the fireplace or on the base of the fireplace, the choice is up to you.

4. Corbels Under Front Porch

This is not something that people usually think of when they think of ways to use corbels, but it gives it a great architectural accent! Hopefully you don’t NEED them to support your porch, but they are beautiful.

5. Corbels Under a Balcony

Similar to using corbels under your front porch, using large corbels under your balcony can be a unique way to add curb appeal and more depth to the front of your home!

6. Corbels as Bookends

This is a really cool way to use new or vintage corbels. Kathleen from FadedCharm used hers as bookends, and I have to say it turned out beautifully!

7. Corbels as a Nightstand

Laura, from Laura Miller Interior Designs, used an extra large corbel as a nightstand base, and I think it is such an amazing idea! You can use smaller ones as well, and it shouldn’t affect the strength of the end table.

8. Corbels Under a Kitchen Harth

Using Corbels underneath the hearth area of your kitchen is a great design addition. Again, you should not rely on these for the structural support, but it is a beautiful way to accent a custom area of your kitchen!

Remodeling in Stages: Beat the Budget

Today, we're going to cover an incredible renovation strategy: How to remodel in stages to beat the budget.

If you have a ton you want to do, but not all the funds you need to do it, then this blog is for you.

If you're specifically interested in how to remodel a kitchen on a budget, click here when you're done reading this article.

Schedule Your FREE Kitchen & Bath Design Appointment!

Sit Down & Plan

It's always a good idea to have a game plan, although most people tend to wing it in a remodel. That's something you should NEVER do.

Many homeowners do a project here and a project there, only to realize that their next project requires that they rip up the one they just completed!

Hindsight is, as they say, twenty-twenty.

beat the budget

Once the idea hits that you're ready to remodel, it's time to sit and plan. If you want to beat the budget, this is seriously the first step. Detail exactly what you want, and try not to worry about money or finances. I know that' s easier said than done, but understand that there are several financing options available. First, you need to plan what you want and what you want to accomplish.

You want a kitchen remodel, right? Ask yourself what it looks like in the end and go from there. No one expects you to have every single facet or feature outlined, but it's a good idea to envision your ideal living space and go from there. Think big, narrow down later.  Think you'll be surprised on what you can accomplish with a little bit of creativity and open-mindedness.

Beat the Budget: Remodel in Steps

Functionality: What's not Working?

Once you've planned your dream, your dreamscape, if you will..let's look at what's not working. For the sake of this blog post, I'm going to use the remodel approach of one my friends to sort of detail the steps.

So, what's not working in your home? The gutters are leaking, making it sound like Niagara Falls on your front porch, the HVAC is on the fritz and needs to be tended to ASAP, or the guest bathroom toilet doesn't work and you're hosting Thanksgiving in a matter of months. All very pressing things.

While you're jotting these things down, it's a good idea to ask yourself, "What's going to make me the most happy when this gets fixed?"

When people come visit, are you tired of having to show someone the bathroom in the basement or use the master bath every time? Those gutters kinda make it difficult to leisurely read during the incoming rainstorm, too, don't they. These are just, ya know, pains in the butt. Let's attack those before we get to the big things. That's how you effectively beat the budget.

Structural Stuff

Look at the things that you'd like done structurally. Understand, too, that the majority of these things can be done by yourself. The more you can accomplish using your hands without having to bring in more help and hiring a crew, the better. We're trying to keep cost down.

beat the budget

So for my friend, these were things like removing walls, side panels, wall paper, drywall damages...and paint. Little emphasis on paint because it's very, very important to get this done before the next step: Flooring.

All wall work should be done beforehand. The last thing you want is paint drips, drywall mud, scratches and scuff on the brand new flooring you just purchased. This is why it's good to think ahead. It's time to beat the budget, friends!

Flooring

My friend quite simply didn't like the floors in her home. As soon as the two steps above were completed, it was time to get the flooring down. This is where the fun comes in as far as options go, too. There are a vast number of flooring options out there: Hardwood, Luxury Vinyl Tile, Laminate, Ceramic Tile, Porcelain Tile, Wood-Look Tile, Patterned Tile, and Carpet.

beat the budget

Each option has their own advantages and disadvantages, and it's not really a matter of, "which one's better?" Choose the option that best suits your lifestyle. If you have children or pets or both, then you're going to want something durable, scratch-resistant, waterproof, stain-denying, and low-maintenance. You could go with Luxury Vinyl Tile, an option that brilliantly exhibits all of the above.

Cabinets/Countertops

My friend built their countertops, so we can't really go off their experience for this aspect. BUT...if you want different countertops and prefer a low-cost option, go with laminate. It's a lovely, cost-effective option that will undoubtedly give you the look you seek; I'll advise you of something, though.

beat the budget

Your kitchen countertops are an overworked surface. I wrote it that way cause they really are. Reminiscent of Atlas holding up the entire world, that's a lot of stress we put them through. We cook, bake, chop, pound, grind, spill, bang, slice, cut, and cover all through that surface. Just because you go with a low-cost option doesn't mean it's better for you in the long run. I elaborate a bit more on that concept in a blog post right here.

The same goes for your kitchen cabinets, which are easily the most expensive aspect of your kitchen remodel. If you go for the cheap option now, you may find yourself in the same situation 3-5 years from now. Go for something with a more longevity, something durable, long-lasting, and equally as attractive and jaw-dropping.

Backsplash

Now we can get kinda crazy with creativity. Kitchen backsplashes can do absolute wonders to the look of a kitchen. Go with Subway Tile or Mesh Back, maybe even Patterned Tile if you're not a messy cook. Throw in some deco pieces, create a unique design, and you have a cooking space that's as good and appealing as the dishes you may (or may not) create in them.

beat the budget

Time to Finesse

Now that you have the major areas of your home finished, let's tackle the less important areas: Bathroom, Living Room, Study, Dining Room, etc. We leave these last because we should finish the rooms that we, the homeowners, are in. It's okay to be selfish during this time, okay? Aunt Mary will be just fine if there isn't any crown moulding in the guest bedroom.

Schedule Your FREE Kitchen & Bath Design Appointment!

And speaking of, of course, this IS the time for those finishing touches. crown moulding, cabinet door hardware, door knobs, paintings, portraits, curtains, all of the decor you can think of. Make it yours. Make it your own. Beat the Budget.

beat the budget

All right, there it is. A way to go about things without stressing over the budget. Sure, put a deadline on when you want it to be done, but give yourself a break. If it takes three years, cool, it takes three years. It's your home.

If you do everything one stage at a time, you'll not only save on money, but you'll do so with low stress, mess, and hassle. Take things one project at a time and know that everything will be just fine. Best of luck, beat the budget!

Greige Anatomy: The Hottest Color in Home Design

Today I'd like to dive into a trend that has swept across the home design in rapid fashion: The Wave of Greige.

Yes, that wondrous combination of gray & beige has captivated the eyes of our fellow homeowners and renovators for, quite honestly, the past few years. Its gentle, neutral tones make it a perfect option for any space or room. It's an enhancement to any look and appealing to the eye. Let's check out a few of our Greige products.

Greige in Flooring

If you haven't heard of Luxury Vinyl Tile, otherwise known as waterproof flooring, then I encourage you to check it out. I won't go into incredible detail about -- that' s a separate blog post, previously written, but it's essentially cutting-edge technology that provides a great many benefits. And it also comes in a couple of colors & variations that have ridden this greige wave, so to speak.

CoreTEC Blackstone Oak LVT - Click to shop LVT Flooring

Featherweight Stone Oak- Click to shop

CoreTEC Blackstone Oak - Click to shop

One can definitely understand the appeal of this trend. Gray has by-and-large been a go-to color in the industry. The color, with its neutral tones, sits beautifully within the confines of any space. Combine it along with beige, another neutral tone, and you're left with a brilliant combination.

Picture Blackstone Oak in a White Shaker kitchen with a pewter countertop, and you've got a masterpiece. Stone Oak would look absolutely riveting in a large space, say, a living room equipped with dark furniture, with natural light pouring in from the windows. Again, the versatility of this color is an ideal benefit.

Greige in Tile

Tile colors have also taken a liking to this stunning trend. I really wasn't kidding when I said it's taken the industry by storm, and not just flooring options as you'll soon see. The material, as well as the actual color, point out the finer details of greige. With gentle swirls and premium patterns, greige is not lost on this counterpart.

8x8 Kenzzi La Fleur Patterned Tile at Builders Surplus in Louisville Kentucky

Kenzzi La Fleur - Click to Shop Tile

See what I mean about these colors exhibiting everything that's so fantastic about greige. We'll start with the first, and first of all, isn't that tile piece so appropriately named, Imperial Rome. Legitimately reminds me of a cathedral in Rome circa 5 B.C.

The second is a wood-look tile, another trendy material that's well worth the hype. Timber Saddle is a top-pick for those who want to create that highly sought after rustic vibe. The last but certainly not least is Kenzzi La Fleur Patterned Tile. I've seen these pieces on backsplashes, which I personally think is the best place for them, but also on floors.

Greige in Cabinets

I stressed it in the beginning of this post, Greige's claim to fame resides heavily in its neutrality. Flooring and tile are one thing, but when it comes to a design element that's eye level, the stakes are considerably higher aesthetically. I think we can agree that kitchen cabinets are a monstrous component to the overall kitchen design, yeah?

Wellborn Pebble Cabinets - Click to shop Cabinets

Drift

Pebble

Now, I put Wellborn's Drift next to Pebble, so I could show you the variants of Greige. Obviously, Drift is darker than Pebble, it still has those gray and beige tones. Two gorgeous cabinets, nevertheless.

I hope you learned a bit about this hot new trend! For any greige home products, visit Builders Surplus today! We carry everything show in this blog, and so much more, for incredible prices! Our design services are always free, so schedule your design appointment below!

Outdoor Kitchen Landscape Design: What to Know

A kitchen, no wonder, forms an indispensable part of any home. The latest landscaping trends talk about the concept of outdoor kitchens. The idea of not confining the art of culinary in the four-walled world has proved itself quite revolutionary. Most people now, prefer to have an outdoor kitchen set-up & why not given the flexibility it offers.

While having an outdoor kitchen can be rewarding but the decision can go haywire if not taken care of certain details. May it be the minute point like location or the overall functionality, there comes a number of factors to consider before planning an outdoor kitchen landscaping.

This article talks about all the key points that one must consider while getting yourself an outdoor kitchen & turn your backyard space into a lavish kitchen. Let’s have a quick look here-

  1.       Plan the landscaping right
  2.       Location- Choose the best
  3.       Be Curious- Ask Questions
  4.       Be handy with kitchen equipment
  5.       Different kinds of lights
  6.       Avoid the mistakes others already made

1. Planning the Right Landscape for your Outdoor Kitchen

The points of designing & landscaping become too important when you’re talking about a concept such as an outdoor kitchen. It decides the kind of ambiance your future dining & cooking space holds. It is essential to clear up details such as the size of the kitchen, the space to be used or the particular pattern to be followed.

Understand the functionality of this one will be similar to that of an indoor kitchen. See that there are different areas meant for cooking, serving, plating, cleaning up etc. with adequate space. The factor here to consider is the proximity and distance between these sections.

2. Location- Choose the best

The location & placement of your outdoor kitchen plays an essential role in the whole planning. It, of course, makes better sense if your outdoor kitchen is located near your home. As per a number of home experts, ideally, the landscaping of an outdoor kitchen should be such that it offers regular water supply. Considering the hygienic requirements, it is essential that both the inflow & outflow of water is maintained fine.

Other than these, factors such as proper ventilation & lighting are to be considered as well. See that there’s ample room for natural shade in the kitchen. The view, on the other hand, will be something your friends at barbeque will be looking forward to a scenic beauty outside of your kitchen. Check the placement accordingly.

3. Be curious- Ask questions

Yes, you got to ask questions about everything that’s being planned with the landscaping point of view. The contractors you choose must know everything and must be able to explain all the details to you with right directions.

Right from questions such as why would you need an outdoor kitchen to what should be an ideal kitchen size for your family, you must clear it all. It is indeed important the upcoming kitchen & dining space is made in such a way that you want it to be. For this to happen, ensure that you outsource the planning to trustable contractors such as Terra Nova. You can always expect better guidance from such firms.

When you are investing a considerable amount of time and money on something, the final product should hold a decent value. So, asking questions to be sure still remains a key point.

4. Be Handy with Kitchen Equipment

Depending upon your requirements, you have to take a keen look at the kind of kitchen equipment you’ll be installing. Make a list of appliances and accessories which will be needed to make it the ideal space you ever wanted. Most of it will depend upon whether you want things to be kept simple or give you an exclusive feeling.

It’ll decide the kind of storage you’d need, the countertop material to be added, the grills and the type of sinks to be added.

The overall budget tends to vary with the kind of material and brand you choose for your preferred appliances. So, it is important to strike off the things you won’t need much adding to the unnecessary spending. Instead, it is preferable to go with simple & required accessories.

These may include sinks, cabinets, in-built grills etc.

5. Different kinds of lights for your Outdoor Kitchen

May it be any area of your home, if the lighting is good, the place shines up right. Whether the kitchen is indoor or outdoor, its lighting carries a unique value. The correct lighting caters to various factors such as adding to the visual appeal or to brighten up the work surfaces. While the usual kitchen can have a similar lighting plan like that of rest of the house, an open-kitchen lighting scheme can differ a bit.

You can put your creativity to some good use here & plan the lights on trees and near bar styled stools. Having spotlights can fix a lot of related issues if placed correctly. Just a pro tip, you must have some extra set of the battery supported bulbs in case the electricity messes up.

6. Avoid the mistakes others already made

This is one special point to mention. We’re sure while preparing your own outdoor kitchen landscaping plan, you’d be taking a word of advice from people who have already built their own. The point is to learn from their mistakes.

The most common mistakes that we’ve survey are not keeping enough area for food preparation. While you plan most of dining & seating arrangement, the core area for food preparation gets mixed up a bit. Always ensure that there’s enough space around the grill & sink to maintain cooking.

Silestone-outdoor-kitchen

The other mistake that people often tend to make deals with lighting. Indeed it is tough to plan the perfect lighting system for your outdoor kitchen but if it is not done right, the seating & cooking systems are going to have an adverse impact. See that you deal with issues beforehand so as to avoid problems later.

Final Thoughts

Having an outdoor kitchen can be thrilling and amazing at the same time but planning it up remains an essential point. If done right, this adds to the beauty of your home & delight for your guests.

Building an outdoor kitchen is a great idea to use up the extra space & get a relaxing change for yourself. Make sure that you keep a track of all the points mentioned above & get an open outdoor kitchen that you had always dreamt of!

Top Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid

If you’re here, odds are you’re thinking of remodeling a kitchen, and you’re looking for the top kitchen remodeling mistakes to avoid. There are plenty of mistakes that can be avoided when it comes to kitchen remodeling in stages. Why use a kitchen designer, when you can find all the information here, so let’s get into it straight.

Don’t Dismiss the Details

When you’re planning your remodel, try to think ahead. How can you make your kitchen look great, but function just as well? Upon entrance, you’ll see a fabulous layout, a brilliant design, but does it comply with your daily routine?

A good place to start in terms of details is storage space. Don’t glance over this opportunity to start anew with your remodel. Include pantry pullouts if you can, contemplate that Lazy Susan in the corner.

Taking the time to go over how best to increase your kitchen storage efficiency will help you out in the long run. It may seem like an expensive addition, but if you put this off and then regret it later, you’re in for a much grander cost than you would initially.

Looking Over the Layout

There’s a common phrase spoken throughout the remodeling industry called, “the work triangle.” It’s the shape of your kitchen’s busiest zones: the sink, the stove, and the fridge. It’s commonly referred to as such because usual, efficient designs have these aspects placed in triangular form.

Why? It’s just easier that way. If you have to walk around an island to get something out of the fridge, it can get annoying really quick. Remember, appearance is a huge part of design honestly, but you want to be able to move & work in there, too.

Go It Alone

Listen, I know all too well how pricey a remodel can be. So much so that doing this remodel by yourself seems awfully appealing. You may already have it in your head that this is what you’re going to do. That’s fine. I get it and all, but before you make this decision I beg you to consult with a professional kitchen or bath designer.

Schedule Your FREE Kitchen & Bath Design Appointment!

In fact, I’ll make it easy for you. Here in store, at Builders Surplus, we offer FREE kitchen/bath design consultations. Fact is, this is no small feat. A full remodel encompasses an abundance of tasks, all broken down into steps and processes. Go it alone, it’ll seem overwhelming, and fast. The purpose of these consultations is to get everything in order, to extend a hand and lead the way during the entire project.

You and the designer will discuss budget, installation, designs, styles, and pretty much every component within your remodel. They’ll give estimates, and you’ll even be able to see your design onscreen using the latest design programs. It’s pretty legit. Interested? Sign up for a free consultation right here.

Bailing on Budget

When planning your remodel, there’s a variety to choose from. Type, style, color, design, all of the components of a specific product. With that said, it’s easy to get carried away on certain things. This is why it’s important to keep your budget in mind. Yes, a cabinet line might be a more high-end, but so is the price.

During the beginning stages, when you’ve set the budget, try to work around it. Meaning, prioritize your kitchen’s features and allocate your finances accordingly. You want more countertop space? Allocate more money into the countertop expense. Want waterproof flooring? Raise the budget up a notch. But it’s easy to want the best of everything and blow the budget out of the water.

You want a new remodel, yes, but you’d probably rather not break the bank for it. May not seem like it at first, but it’s kind of life-changing, a new kitchen remodel. It also increases your home value. These are good things to be sure, but if you’re overspending on things you don’t need, then it’s not cost-effective. Just a little, ya know, food for thought.

Alright, everyone, there you have it. Just a few things to think about before you tackle this thing on. Remember to plan, plan, plan. The more you prepare, the less you’ll stress or worry about things during.

Now, let’s go ahead and get you set up for your FREE Kitchen Design Appointment so you can avoid ALL of these!

Bold Kitchen Design: Make a Statement!

A bold kitchen design isn’t for everyone. But, even if you like to play it safe in interior design, there is something to behold about a kitchen that takes a risk. You can create a bold kitchen design using many different techniques, which we’ll explain below by showcasing some truly remarkable kitchens!

8 AMAZING BOLD KITCHEN DESIGNS

1. Black and White Beauty

This kitchen is bold and contemporary, while also giving off a slightly traditional feel. The Black and white cabinets contrast beautifully. An island is always a great place to add contrasting cabinets. The waterfall Torquay quartz countertop from Cambria edge give it a dramatic look and the brass hardware and light fixtures really set off this design!

2. Monochromatic Craftsman

This kitchen is striking! The monochromatic look works so well, especially when contrasted with the dark kitchen island. It evokes the feeling of the woods with the green handcrafted Wellborn Cabinets and natural looking wood floors. The quartz, glass subway tile and chrome hardware give it a modern feel without feeling too cold.

3. Middle Eastern Elegance

This neutral kitchen makes a bold statement with a pink arabesque accent tile and fun pink lantern pendants. The 42″ cabinets give a dramatic look and the gold hardware brightens up the space. The Ocean Jasper Silestone Countertops tie it all together. This is a great look for those who want different, but not too crazy.

The reflective countertops and bead board ceiling draw your eye across the space with ease. This is a fun, airy design that would work great in a coastal home or anywhere in the country!

5. Detailed Dome

This bold kitchen is incredible! While most of us don’t have this incredible ceiling to tile, they made the most of this space with the stunning herringbone brick pattern. The grey and navy coordinate so well, and the Cambria Seagrove Quartz Countertops feature both colors, streamlining the design. The cream hearth above the stove adds the perfect bit of contrast. The details such as corbels and a stunning farm sink take this design to another level.

This fun contemporary kitchen features things a little bit outside of the norm. The fun green glass subway tile is in a vertical pattern, making is more unique. The Slab style Waypoint Cabinets are paired with open shelving made of glass, so it really opens the space up. The bar is almost restaurant style and the addition of the fun thimble shaped barstools really sets the design off. It goes to show you the most unexpected elements can make up a stunning and bold kitchen!

8. Cool Urban Eatery

This contemporary style bold kitchen features slab cabinet doors in a rich espresso. The bar pulls keep the lines clean, as seen in the rest of the space. The open shelving is modern and trendy, while the red mosaic backsplash is unexpected. PRO: The Estimate – What You Need to Consider

Professionals in the industry, I hope business is good and all is well. Looking at the title, I’m sure you already have preconceived notions about this topic. One thing I’ve definitely learned while working for my father at his home remodeling business is that each company tends to do things a little differently. Especially when it comes to the planning process.
Today, I’d like to take the knowledge I’ve gained over the years and discuss the estimate and the aspects you definitely need to consider when you finally sit down and price it all out before you present it to your client.

The Estimate – Meet for Measurements

Now, it may not seem like an important aspect, but appearances can go a long way. When first meeting a customer, it’s probably in your best interest to wear something nice. I’m not talking about a suit and tie or anything, but definitely respectable apparel.
After all, you’re being invited into someone’s home and potentially doing work on their house, so building a foundation of trust early on is encouraged.

estimate

Once you’ve exchanged the proper pleasantries upon initially meeting, it’s time to get down to business. Now, knowing you’re a pro, I’m not going to sit here and type out WHY it’s significant, just stress that it is highly-important to take precise measurements. Get it down to a thirty-second of an inch. You know as well as I do that the closer you are, the easier it is to map out.
My father sketches out a rough draft of the area he’s working and jots down the measurements along the entire perimeter, never failing to forget one edge, corner, side, or height. As you know, this is essential for judging the amount of materials you’re going to need. In essence, be precise. It will help you out in the long run.

It’s also convenient to try to get a basis of budget while you’re at it. More often than not, however, you’re going to hear, “Well, we’re trying to keep the costs low,” or “We’re on a tight budget, so if we can be under (insert amount),” which understandably no professional contractor wants to hear. But, clients tend to stress this rhetoric in the hopes that materials will miraculously drop with one of these phrases or you’ll suddenly be more inclined to lower your hourly rate by being sympathetic towards a specific amount. Now, what you do is up to you, but quality work comes at a cost.

The Estimate – Planning

Alright, folks, so after you get your measurements, it’s time to sit down and really detail this out, right? Now, there are some things you definitely should be cognizant of.
Materials
I mentioned in the intro that I’ve learned some companies do this differently, and it’s true. I’ve come across owners that tend to “wing it,” not wanting to overcomplicate the beginnings of a project and plan things as they go. Don’t do this.
I’ve also heard about owners basing their material costs from previous jobs, thinking that the costs will be same. Unless you’re in the business of losing money, delete this method from your mind altogether.

estimate

When it comes to materials, you should first have a clear understanding of what your customer wants and needs in the project. Obviously, after initially discussing these things and taking measurements, you’ll have some sort of idea. From there, it’s all about breaking the entire project down in sections and making sure you’ve accounted for every element with each step.
For example, we’ve done quite a few unfinished basements, and the very first thing that needs to be done is FRAMING. So, accompanied by the measurements, he’ll count how many 2×4’s he’ll need, treated & untreated, for interior walls, headers, built-in cubbies, bookshelves, benches, etc. It’s an extensive process, but if you mess up on materials, you can be out hundreds of dollars. I’ve seen it.
Once you’ve detailed how much you need of everything, it’s time to go to your local home improvement store and get the material costs. And this is where you can lose money if you’re not careful. Like most products in a capitalist society, there’s means of inflation. Building materials are no different.

estimate
It’s best to get the most recent prices, so if your job isn’t for another one to two months, let your customers know that there may be an influx in price. Full disclosure is completely necessary. Remember, building trust is key.
Now, you’ve got all your prices for all of your materials, and it’s time to go back to the lab. Grab your calculator, some snacks, and a clear head because it can be a tedious session, crunching all of these numbers together and making sure it’s all as accurate as possible. The result should be one fixed number labeled “MATERIALS.” Bam.

Labor/Time Management
You’ve got your fixed rate, how much you charge by the hour, and it’s important that you don’t sell yourself short, ya know? The home remodeling business can be a hard and grueling one. Fun, yes, but 100% physically-intensive. Accommodate for this fact. Now, my father is crazy analytical and tends to map his time down to the quarter-hour. Not joking.
So, much like his material break down, he’ll list how much time it’s going to take to perform each task. When I say everything is accounted for in his estimate, I mean it. Going off the unfinished basement example, running wire is no small feat. Drilling holes for the wire to run through for an entire basement that boasts 24 electrical outlets is no small task.

estimate

With that said, my father we’ll assess how much time it typically takes to drill for a complete wall, so on and so forth. That may seem like too much of a breakdown, but this is your time we’re talking here, and you know the old adage: Time is money.
Once you’ve assessed how much time it’s going to take in total to get the job done, you’re presented with two things: A deadline and labor costs. Be EXTRA mindful of the first, people. Understand that you’re going to be working inside (or outside) someone’s house for a duration of time.

estimate

Where I’m sure your clients are more than happy that you’re taking care of them, getting their projects done, there is always, always relief when the last screw is sunk in. Because of this, you should account for mishaps, mistakes, inadequate lumber, last minute trips to the department store, you name it.
As much as we’d all love for everything to run super smooth, it’s more than likely not going to happen this way. As is life, right? Accounting for these inconsistencies will help you, in the mind of the customer and your stress levels. Trust me on that one. That way if you think you’re going to need a couple of days to get everything flushed and finished, you’ve got yourself covered.

The Estimate  – Presenting your Quote

Alright, so you’ve got your final number, the sum of your material and labor costs. This is why I said it’s a good rule of thumb to gather some info on your client’s budget. If you’re able to read a room pretty well, you’ve got an advantage.. When you talked price, what was their tone? What did they say specifically? Were they eager to get things going, were they less worried about costs and more about process?
In knowing these things, you can gather whether or not your clients are going to be shocked or pleased at the price. Either way, your approach is CRUCIAL. Be mindful of how you present the estimate for this project. I’m not going to tell you what or how to do this, but it’s common knowledge that when you’re dealing with people, compassion is critical, tone is everything, and consideration is consequential.

Sit down with them, and I personally just think it’s best to explain exactly how you got your estimate instead of hitting them with it head-on. This allows your clients to truly see the effort that goes into an estimate, as well as the breakdown of how you got to the price you did. That way when you do deliver it, high-price or otherwise, your clients comprehend exactly why.
Once you’ve told them your price, you’ll know what to do. They may want a copy of your calculations or material lists to see if they knock some things off or make some adjustments. And honestly, this is fine. There’s been many a time where my father has went back to the lab to adjust some things to an estimate to get closer to a client’s budget. It’s all a part of this process.

estimate

Be as accommodating as you can within reason. If you can knock off some additions — build in bookcases, recessed lighting, drop-ceilings, a change in floor type — then express these possibilities. Free-flowing communication is tremendously helpful when establishing a relationship with a client. Be personal and use empathy to work in their wants and needs.

I know, I know, it seems like a long list of things to be mindful of, but I actually enjoy this part of the process, especially if the client is eager and ready to get started. Definitely much more exciting. But there ya have it, pros. I hope this proves to be of satisfaction, and up-to-par with how you handle the pre-planning process. Take it easy out there, and stay safe!

What to Expect When You’re Expecting a Kitchen Remodel

If you’re reading this, you’re most likely considering a kitchen remodel, or you’re about to begin one. Either way, being prepared is always the best way to go. Some people have an idea of what they expect to encounter in a kitchen remodel, but it’s not always accurate. So, we’re going to go over exactly what you can expect when working with a designer and getting a kitchen installation.

Using a Designer for a Kitchen Remodel

You may think it’s expensive to use a professional kitchen designer for your kitchen remodel. That’s not the case, at least when you work with Builders Surplus! Our design services are FREE! So, unless you’re an expert, there is no reason not to use these amazing services. They will help you find the product lines that fit your wants and needs, help you stay within budget, and alert you to any issues that may arise with any desired layout changes and help you find solutions. Here’s how the process works.

1. Initial Consultation

This meeting occurs in Builders Surplus location. In this meeting, budget is determined, as well as cabinet door style and what kind of design aesthetic you’re looking for, if you have not already decided. Product lines will be discussed and you will learn the differences in them. What is most durable, eco-friendly, budget friendly, etc.

2. Measurements

If you have your own measurements, we can get started on your design, but measurements will need to be done by us for us to guarantee the fit. If you are using your own installers, they will need to guarantee the fit for you. Measurements are VERY important in making sure your design comes out perfectly.

3. Design is Generated

Depending on kitchen size, complexity and number of people ahead of you waiting for designs, your time frame for receiving this can vary between 1-3 weeks. Initial layout is generated based on the info given in step 1 and 2. This is done in a computer system that allows you to see a 3D image of your desired kitchen with the products you choose for your kitchen remodel. HOW COOL!

4. Reviews and Changes

You could have 1 to 2 additional rounds of changes and revisions. The more up front information you can give your designer about your preferences and budget, the more accurate your initial design will be, meaning there are fewer changes to make, and you can start your kitchen remodel sooner.

5. Products are Ordered & Delivered

Take home your in stock products or arrange for quick pickup. The rest will be delivered to your home or to our store (Depending on your cabinet line) in around 4 weeks. About 1 week before your delivery, your designer will be in touch with you to make sure your installation or pick up/delivery are on schedule. During delivery, it is possible that damage can occur to your products. Please be aware of this. This could delay your kitchen remodel a bit as the manufacturer will need to send replacements. Manufacturer backorders do happen occasionally as well.

    • TIP: While you are waiting for your cabinets to arrive, start preparing your temporary kitchen or easy to prepare meals (if you are also ordering custom countertops).
    • TIP: Please have cabinet hardware in your possession before your cabinet installation date, otherwise we will not be able to install.

Kitchen Remodel Installation

Many people aren’t really sure exactly what takes place during an installation. The most important thing I can tell  you is that this is a PROCESS, not an EVENT. Keeping that in mind will put your expectations in the right place and allow for a more enjoyable remodeling experience.

6. Installation is Scheduled

It is not necessary that you be home during the entire installation process, but you will be required to be there to let the team in and at the end of the process for the final walk through so that you can verify the job is completed to your standards and sign the final paperwork. Please note that because unforeseen issues can arise, it could change the install date, so keep this in mind when deciding to use vacation days or take off work for the entire process.

7. Cabinet Installation

Installations are typically completed within 2 days, depending on size of kitchen. Please note that we do not connect or disconnect plumbing for appliances. Our installers are not certified plumbers, so take care of this beforehand.

  • NOTE: Door and drawer fronts will typically be crooked and not lined up during installation. They will fix this at the end of the process.
  • NOTE: There will be dust, debris, and trash. Your installer will do their best to limit this, but is a part of the process. A good installer will clean up at the end of each day.

8.Countertop Template

When your cabinet installation is completed, your countertops can be templated. The installer will let your designer know what date the cabinet installation is being done so that templating can be set up. It could take up to 2 weeks to get your template done depending on which countertops you’re getting. Your sinks and faucets will need to be in your possession and all cabinets must be attached to the walls in order for this step to take place.

  • NOTE: Because templating cannot be done until every cabinet is installed in it’s final position, if any of your cabinets were damaged in transit, this can delay this step.

9. Countertop Installation

Time frames can vary depending on the countertop you’ve chosen for your kitchen remodel. In Stock granite can be installed within 1 week. In Stock laminate is installed by kitchen installer during cabinet installation. Custom countertops are installed anywhere from 10 days to 4 weeks. This depends on the season and the schedule of the installers. Be prepared to live without countertops for a month. See our blog on setting up a temporary kitchen. Preparing in advance can make this time much easier and eliminate stress for your family. Sinks and faucets will still need to be connected by a plumber after this step.

10. Backsplash Installation

This typically takes another 2 days.
After Backsplash is installed, you should be complete, unless your installers would be installing your cabinet hardware. If you are getting flooring installation done, that would be your first step before any of this occurs.
That’s about it folks! I hope we’ve covered this process to your liking and that it makes your kitchen remodel go smoother knowing what to expect!

Home Value: 5 Easy Ways to Increase It

What’s going on, everyone? I do hope you’re well and enjoying the much-anticipated warm weather. Where it seemed like it was a rather mild winter, it felt like ages to me.  If you’re a summer baby like yours truly, then you literally countdown the days until April or May, where you can enjoy a nice drive with the windows down and music up. Plus, now that it’s warm, we can all start working on the most important asset we have — our home. In this blog post, I’ll discuss five ways to easily increase home value. May the warmth inspire and spark creativity, y’all. Let’s begin!

The Best Ways To Increase Home Value

Focus on the Entry Door

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that curb appeal is a monstrous factor when it comes to home value. The front door simply further emphasizes this incredibly significant factor. Essentially, it pulls the eye in and acts as a main focal point to the entire house. Think about it, when you have guests over, what is the first course of action? Walking through the front door. So, naturally, that’s what the eye is going to be attracted to.

home value

Don’t be afraid to get a little quirky when it comes to your front door, either. Want to make it a crazy-cool color? Do it. Want to splash some sort of design on it? Go ahead. I encourage you to make it your own and let it standout. Because, honestly, it’s going to anyway.

home value

Upgrade the Kitchen

Now, listen, I know those three words can seem a bit vague, and even once it’s broken down, it can still be a bit overwhelming. So for all intensive purposes, I’ll just name two components of a kitchen. Also note that your kitchen is arguably (but who would argue) the most important room in the entire house. Because of this, simply renovating a few things will no doubt increase home value. For sure.
Cabinets: You may be surprised to know that simply switching out the cabinets in your kitchen will do wonders as far as aesthetics. Maybe you’re tired of the type of cabinet and color, or you’re like me and get antsy when you’ve staring at the same scenery for far too long. I encourage you to take a good, hard look at your cabinets and see if you’d like to make some changes. Remix it up.
home value

Countertops: In my opinion, countertops can make or break a kitchen’s overall look. With this in mind, if you’ve been preparing your meals over, say, formica countertops then I think you’d really enjoy a granite or quartz countertops. They’re both sleek, modern-looking, and the characteristics for both are far more superior — in strength, durability, accident-resistance, and maintenance.

home value

Beautify your Bathroom

Kitchens and baths, y’all, that’s where it’s at for value’s sake. These rooms allow a person to express themselves artistically and make a style their own. Like I mentioned before, don’t be afraid to go above and beyond. After all, IT IS your home. Do what you will. However, if you’re going to be selling in the near future, keep the style one that will appeal to a broad range of buyers.
Vanities: A bathroom doesn’t call for as much space as a kitchen does, sure, but I’d be lying if I said that these pieces aren’t essential to your bathroom design. Take the same advice I gave you about your kitchen cabinetry and recreate a different design — use interesting colors, textures, and styles and make things harmoniously blend.
home value
Vanity tops: Much like your kitchen countertops, a vanity top can make or break the design. Now, if it were me, I’d take a look at our cultured marble tops, in addition to our large selection of vanity tops. We truly have some beautiful colors that will blend nicely with any design. I promise you.

Watch your Windows

Windows may seem like a small aspect in home design, but I’m telling you, replacing the old with the new will greatly increase your home value. At Builders Surplus, we carry Silverline by Andersen windows, and they’re true beauties. Available in different designs and styles, these babies will quite literally make each room brighter.

home value

Another thing I kinda like about windows is that they’re two sides of the same coin. We talked about the importance of curb appeal before, and windows sort of add to that enhanced focus, but they’re also very endearing on the inside, as well.

Plus, if you’re kinda crafty, you can enrich the look and put a beautiful set of moulding around each window, achieving that ‘craftsmen’ style perfectly. Just a little food for thought if you want to really increase home value.

home value

Spruce Up the Outside

This probably goes without saying, but a well-maintained, neat, and even colorful yard is going to get some looks. If you want to increase home value, this is definitely an area I’d focus on. Curb appeal, remember? If your grass is as green as a golf course, there’s a nice blend of trees, flowers, and bushes — all neatly clipped — and everything looks proper and perfect, don’t be surprised to see a car come to a slow crawl, peeking in.

home value

Having a yard that’s pleasing to the eye is going to get you those seriously-this-just-went-on-the-market kind of offers, and who doesn’t want to be in that driver’s seat, no pun intended. Just don’t make it TOO busy, you know what I mean. Keep it nice. Keep it neat. Keep it complete.

home value

I hope these five things gave you a bit of insight and, hopefully, some inspiration to make some renovations to increase home value. Change isn’t all bad, people! Remember that, and keep on enjoying this weather! Hope to see y’all in here soon, but until then be safe and stay blessed!

Bamboo Flooring Shopper's Guide

bamboo

So, I probably know what you’re thinking. Bamboo? And just when I thought I’ve seen it all. And, honestly, I’m right there with you in that assessment, but bamboo is actually some pretty legitimate stuff we’re talking about. Today, I’d like to talk to you a little bit about some things you should consider when shopping for this awesome, abstract, type of flooring. So buckle in for a bit, and let me learn you a thing or two!

Why Bamboo?

Right? Like, whoever thought of taking this plant and manufacturing it into something that people can actually walk on is definitely on a completely different mental wavelength than I am, but I applaud whoever did it. So…why?

It’s ‘Green’: Well, for one, it’s environmentally-friendly. If you’re anything like us over here at Builders Surplus, that is definitely something to be valued. To put it in comparison, the trees that are used to make hardwood floors can take 20-25 years to reach full maturity. Bamboo, on the other hand, only takes a mere 5-7 years to reach its adolescence. Then it’s ready to go.

Strength: Secondly, it’s stronger than most of the hardwoods you’ll find beneath your feet. I know this can’t be the first time you’ve heard that bamboo is a rock-solid, so imagine that intensifying strength covering your living or dining room. Pretty cool, right?

Durable: This stuff can take a beating. For example, let’s say it’s Christmas, okay, and you and your cousin are playing your version of “Hot Potato,” with a snow globe. Game’s going good and then one of y’all messes up and the globe passes slips through a set of fingers, descending to your brand-new bamboo floors — everything’s in slo-mo — someone may or may not dive for it, I don’t know. The globe hits the bamboo with a loud ‘thud,’ and you fear the worst. Then you look….and nothing. Nothing at all. Yeah, guys, this stuff is like THAT.

Graphite

Where To Put Bamboo

High-Traffic Areas: This type of flooring was literally meant to be installed in those main areas where people congregate or walk through – living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and hallways. Because of its strength and durability, you’ll achieve that same look you did when first laid it down, no matter where you put it. I told y’all. This is some long-lasting stuff, for sure. It doesn’t swell. Or contract.
NO Bathrooms: Okay, now this is some pretty excellent material, for sure, but it’s not superhuman, okay? It’s kryptonite is water, and bathrooms simply hold too much moisture for it. You don’t want those kinds of problems. Trust me.

Frosted Pearl

Who Would Love Bamboo Flooring?

People with Allergies: For all intensive purposes, it’s safe to say that this type of flooring is hypo-allergenic. Meaning, it can’t be penetrated by the usual, common allergens such as pet hair, pollen, dust, and the other crap that makes me want to yank my nose off.
Those Who Hate Cleaning: When I say this stuff is super low-maintenance, I mean it. Literally, all you need is a broom and a vacuum cleaner. But, I guess, if you’d like to get semi-fancy, you can grab a Swiffer broom. To each his own.

Obsidian

Colors of Bamboo

At Builders Surplus, we custom order bamboo flooring. It’s available in a variety of stunning colors, fourteen in total. The pictures that you see throughout are just a glimpse of what we have to offer. From darker tones like ‘Obsidian’ to lighter tones like ‘Frosted Pearl.’

Installation and Specs on Bamboo Flooring

Below is a chart that details the type of installation and some specified specs about bamboo flooring. You’ll notice that the installation isn’t any different than putting down regular hardwood floors. The glueless locking system is extremely easy. It also details some of the warranties, which is obviously pretty important.

Family Friendly Remodeling Materials

It doesn’t matter if you have a bigger family or a smaller one, accidents are just going to happen. Someone is going to knock over the grape juice all over the kitchen countertops, muddy footprints will trail the floors all the way up to the culprit’s bedroom, someone’s going to neglect the “clean bathroom” chore for weeks at a time, leaving soap scum and grime to everyone’s displeasure, spices will be misplaced or unfortunately found in the fridge, and crumbs will layer the living room floor no matter how many times you vacuum.
Families and messes go together like the mop and the broom in the closet down the hallway. It’s inevitable. BUT…there are some remodeling materials that you can use in your renovation that will alleviate some of the stress that these messes bring, some even eradicating them altogether. In this post, we’ll detail some of these remodeling materials, which you’ll undoubtedly think about the next time you’re wiping up spaghetti sauce that’s dribbled down the cabinet door.

Remodeling Materials – Quartz Countertops

So, there’s a term that I need to say here, and at first glance I, too, was like, “Uhhhh…is that a word?” Wipe-ability. I hyphenated it for your sake, but apparently, this is a thing. It means exactly what you think it does, and it goes in context with the first remodeling material I have for you today. Quartz countertops are undoubtedly the easiest surface to maintain. It’s a non-porous material, so there’s no chance of anything staining. It’s also extremely durable; it won’t chip, crack, scratch, or scuff.

Remodeling Materials – CoreTEC Flooring

New-age technology combined with a stunning, jaw-dropping look, CoreTEC is a flooring like no other. It’s best characteristic and the main reason it makes this list? 100% waterproof. Not water-resilient. Water. Proof. You could dump an entire gallon of whatever on these floors, leave for the weekend, and you’d come back to it staring right back at you like, “What? Was that supposed to phase me or something?” It doesn’t warp. It doesn’t buckle. It doesn’t act like your typical hardwood flooring at all. Too legit. And we have these lovely remodeling materials right here, in store, ready to be installed. Click here to check out our inventory.

Remodeling Materials – Tiled Shower Walls

In general, tile is your safest bet when it comes to having a low-maintenance floor. But tiled shower walls exemplifies this characteristic. Heavily. As opposed to fiberglass shower walls, soap scum, dirt, and grime are easier to clean and maintain with a tiled shower wall. It can be as simple as purchasing an After Shower cleaner and wiping the walls down each time. Easy as pie. SIDENOTE: If you do tile your shower walls, refrain from using white grout. Those are TERRIBLY difficult to clean and you’ll curse the day you ever decided that. And chiseling out grout is no fun. Trust me. I know. To check out some of our tile options, click here!

Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Organizers

Everything just seems to run smoother in the family when you can find the things you’re wanting when you need them. Kitchen organizers are an excellent way to sort out all of your cooking essentials and save some space. Cause after all, counter space can be scarce within any family and in the morning when you’re frantically trying to make breakfast or make lunches for the day, you need as much space as you can get. Installing one of these inexpensive kitchen organizers makes for one of the best remodeling materials on this list. They’re handy and have a way of revolutionizing your organizational patterns in the kitchen. We have an abundance in stock, as well. Head here to shop!

Remodeling Materials – Kitchen Island

A kitchen island can be used as one of those hot spots in the house, ya know? A place where people gather to do homework, eat meals, and discuss their day. To me, a kitchen island is one of those assets that just bring together AND they’re one of the most functional tools in a kitchen design. More space. More storage. Less hassle.

PRO: Additional Options to Impress Your Clients

How’s it going, professionals? I hope business is well, and that you’re so slammed with jobs, you honestly don’t know what to do with yourself at the moment. It’s better to have an abundance of jobs than to be stressing where your next one will be, am I right? Today, I’d like to discuss a few options, quite literally, on how you can maintain repeating customers in your queue. You’ll do this by simply impressing your clients in a way that shows off your finesse as a master of your trade.
In essence, you’ll suggest options that may have been overlooked in the initial design and will hopefully having your customers so satisfied with your expertise that they’ll go to no one else but you during their next renovation. To do so, I’ll break it down by a number of categories – kitchen, bath, flooring, tile, and doors – and provide a suggestion that one, enhances the look of the design, and two, will make your customer very happy that they called you. Cause that’s what it’s all about, right?

Kitchen Options – Crown Moulding

It’s no secret that cabinets are a significant factor in any kitchen design. They’re essential for the appearance of the kitchen style, but also for functionality as well. Typically, larger families require more kitchen space, from both the countertops and cabinets. The trick is to blend both together, using aesthetics as well as how functional the cabinets are to produce a design that gives you the best of both worlds. Those two words in bold, two lines above are yet another way to enhance the look of the kitchen without your customer’s digging too deep into their wallets.
The Crown Moulding option is one that can COMPLETELY change the look of a kitchen. Yes, it’s that drastic. It makes the difference of your standard cabinet look to something more elegant, elaborate, and sophisticated. At a pretty low cost. There’s a wide variety of options, too. Everything from extremely intricate designs to simple, smooth beveled edges. Just throw it out as a suggestion, and let your customers determine if they like the look or not. But – and I’m willing to bet – they’ll appreciate the tip.

Bath Options – Backsplash

Ah, talk about an enhancement. A tiled backsplash in a kitchen is almost mandatory once you’ve installed a couple during bathroom renovations. It’s simply a lovely feature, and I have a theory on why that is. Bear with me here, but a design is only as good as the components that it’s made of. Let’s take the color aspect of it all. If the colors do not work, the design does not work. But if the colors mesh well with another then it becomes appealing to the eye. So, when it comes to a backsplash, it’s just another asset, or component, that helps blend in the colors in the design.
Plus, look at the materials you’re dealing with, vanity alone. You have the color of the vanity, the color of the countertop, the wall paint color, accessories, and so on…and then when you add a backsplash, it just pulls everything together to make something quite extraordinary. Once again, low on cost, relatively easy on install, and tremendous on appearance. I love this option. Your clients will, as well. Take a peek at our backsplash tile options on our website. We have a wide variety of styles and finishes that will accommodate a number if designs!

Flooring Options – Quarter Round

In the remodeling industry, as you know, you hear the phrase “finishing touches” multiple times in conversation. Putting in quarter round after you’ve installed the floor and finished trimming the room is simply one of those things you can do to really “complete” a room. That God awful gap between the base boards and the floor is simply not a good look, and yes, I know that some people are fine with it to lower costs, but the look is ten times better when it’s taken care of. Maybe twenty.
I’d definitely suggest this option if you’re renovating a wide, open area like a basement or something of that nature. Closets and storage rooms aren’t as important, but in rooms where there’s going to be a flow of traffic, where your clients will entertain their guests, and so on…this is an excellent option. It’s the dot on the ‘i’ and the cross on the ‘t’.

Tile Options – Decorative Mosaic

Out of all the options that I’ll list in this post, this is the one that I’d highly suggest. Especially if you’re installing a tiled shower or a backsplash. My father likes to call them “decos,” for short, and we’ve installed quite a bit of them for a number of clients. They absolutely love the look. To me, personally, I think it’s best exemplified in a stand-up, tiled shower. Placing them about eye level, the color blends (or contrast, if you prefer) just make it truly legit design.
Honestly, that’s as best as I can say it. It’s just a 100%, cool-as-all-get-out, bad@$$ design. Straight up. I implore you to at least suggest “deco” tiles when on your next tile job. It’s stunning. Simply stunning. Again, we have a vast amount of some of the finest design and trends in decorative mosaic tiles that one can ask for. Go take a look right here!

Door Options – Custom Paint it

You have many of your standard colors out there to work with, it is true. But, if you want to really make a lasting impression, suggest to your client that they purchase a custom paint to finish of their door. It may seem a bit…quirky, sure, but I’m telling you, it’s effective. Last summer, one of my father’s longtime clients had us install an exterior door for them. The lady of the house wanted the front door to “pop,” so we went with this Canary Yellow color.
\And I’ll tell ya what, if I wasn’t almost blinded while about 50 times as I applied the paint. Super bright. Vivid. Distinct. At first, I thought these characteristics were faults, but once we installed it, and drove up on it for the first time, I began to appreciate its vivacity. It drew the eye, and to me, that’s what mattered most. Suggest a custom paint color, urge your client to think outside of the box, to have a one of a kind feature in a home that will make it entirely their own. Suggest these options, and watch the effects unfurl.
