What Makes Some Kitchen Cabinets Cost More?

Today, I’m going to talk about why some kitchen cabinets are sometimes a bit more costly than others. We’ll look at the direct components of a cabinet, and discuss how each element has a set of options, some more expensive than others.

Kitchen Cabinets – Wood Species

Kitchen Cabinets Character Maple or Hickory: Hands down, without question, the most expensive. This species sports a strong grain, making it solid and extremely durable. It has a rustic, or country, look that is highly sought after, but at a steep price. Kitchen Cabinets Cherry: This is the more traditional approach, and definitely more expensive than most.  A cherry wood species stains magnificently, going on smooth and easy to soak in. Whereas some other wood might take a few coats, this one reveals an outstanding, fine finish with one. It has warmer, red tones and tends to darker over time. Kitchen Cabinets   Maple: Cost-effective, and paints quite nicely. It can also be updated! Although, there’s less grain in this species, it is a fine one for your money. Kitchen Cabinets Oak/Ash: Another traditional look, and relatively inexpensive as well. The grain shows right through this wood species, tends to be a bit rustic, and can also be updated! Kitchen Cabinets Medium-density fiberboard (MDF): This very affordable species is a painted option only, hence the low cost. But for your money, it’s an excellent option and looks great in any kitchen.   Cabinets-Shop-Ad     Kitchen Cabinets Laminate: Another more traditional approach, ranging from a simple design to contemporary. But be careful, this species does not do well next to heat and tends to yellow if it’s set to close to an oven. Kitchen Cabinets Thermofoil: Your wallet will love this option. It’s only available in white or linen, and is yet another wood that cannot withstand excessive heat.

Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinets – Door Options

Traditional (Standard) Overlay: Least expensive. The frame is visible between the doors. Full Overlay: Moderately inexpensive. The doors cover entire cabinet width. Inset: The most expensive option. The door set inside the frame. Slab: A bit costly. Boasts a flat, solid panel door.

Kitchen Cabinets – Finishes

Kitchen Cabinets Standard Stain: Undoubtedly, the most cost-effective approach. It would be as if you bought some cabinets and applied the stain yourself. With this finish, the cabinet sides may have a laminated end that coordinates. Kitchen Cabinets Special Stain/Paint: This process is a bit more difficult than merely applying some stain, but the finish is that much better. Visually appealing, noticeable, but the sides need to be skinned to match, adding to the cost.   Cabinets-Shop-Ad     Kitchen Cabinets Paint Stain with Glaze: Painted cabinets are a hot commodity right now, and can make your kitchen a little bit brighter. By adding a glaze to stain or paint, the finish draws out the finer details. Kitchen Cabinets Finishing Techniques: Now depending on your budget, one of these features is an excellent finishing touch. Using a technique such as weathering, or the Vintage look adds character and lovely style, but of course, all at a nice price, too.

Mediterranean Kitchen: Get the Look

At Builders Surplus, Kitchens are one of our specialities, and today we’re going to show you how to achieve the Mediterranean Kitchen look. The Mediterranean kitchen design is a favorite of many homeowners. Its very appealing to those who like relaxed style with a right and sunny feeling. This style is also reminiscent of the old world, particularly Italy, Greece and other Mediterranean based locations, as the name suggests. The Mediterranean style is relaxed, warm and inviting, while also elegant and sophisticated.

Elements of a Mediterranean Kitchen:

Color:

The colors are a very important part of the Mediterranean style. The look should be soothing, with rich and warm colors hues. The style pulls from the sun, sea and natural foliage that are native to the region. Spicy reds, yellows, terra cotta colors, ocean blues and muted greens really bring the Mediterranean style together. You should feel as though you’re on a sandy beach or in the Italian Countryside.

Tile:

The main theme of Mediterranean is natural looking materials. Tile is a very important choice in this style of kitchen. Not only will you see a lot of tiled floors in Mediterranean kitchens, you will almost always see a tile backsplash. Travertine is a popular choice, with the natural stone fitting perfectly with the style. Hand painted tiles are a perfect accent to add, really accentuating the old world vibe we talked about. Adding ledge stone or any other type of natural stone accent is also another great way to add some pop with your tile. While doing some of this stone work can e time consuming, we offer a variety of “Natural stone tile” that is much easier to install, like brick tile, ledge stone panels, or mesh back tile.

Typically, Mediterranean kitchens will create some sort of focal point with their tile. It is typical to do it over the stove area. Use different patterns of the same tile, or different tiles to accent, it’s up to you. They are still usually in the same natural hues or they are of the hand painted variety.

Flooring:

Flooring in a Mediterranean kitchen is usually always a hardwood or tile. The hardwood can be dark and rich, or lighter and more rustic or reclaimed looking. It all depends on the exact style you’re going for. You can a more modern Mediterranean kitchen or go more old world. Tiles are typically a tan, brown, cream or reddish color, keeping in line with the neutrals of the style.

Cabinets:

In Mediterranean kitchen design, cabinets are often constructed from high-quality woods like cherry or character maple. They can be left in their natural state, stained or painted to add a colorful element to the design. You will often see pops of turquoise, green, or various other colors.
Mediterranean kitchen green cabinets
We also see the antique white cabinets often in Mediterranean kitchen design. This keeps the room light, bright and airy. Dark cabinets also work well in the space. What we do find is that almost all of the cabinets in a Mediterranean kitchen have detailing in the door. You will virtually never see a slab or shaker door in this style of kitchen. This brings the more hand-carved look into the space. You’re not looking for sleek in your cabinet door with this kitchen style. You will also see glazes or distressed finishes on these types of cabinets.

Architectural Features:

There are a few main architectural features in Mediterranean kitchen design. The first is the presence of arches. You will find beautiful arches over fireplaces, in walls, or in a hearth design. Hearths over top of the stove area are a very popular design choice as well.

Beams are another big architectural player in Mediterranean kitchens. Dark, light, rustic, thick, thin, it doesn’t really matter. You will find them in the majority of these kitchens. And for good reason, they are beautiful! Textured Walls add a very old world feel to a Mediterranean kitchen. Most old kitchens in this area of the world had plaster or stone walls, so this brings back the original feel. Detailed ceilings can be found is the majority of Mediterranean kitchens as well. It could be trey ceilings, tiled ceilings, beams, painted ceilings, the choices are endless. This adds some serious detail and drama to the space!

Lighting:

In a Mediterranean kitchen, you need dramatic lighting. You will always find chandeliers and lots of  wrought iron. You will often see pot racks double as lighting, as shown above. The bigger, the better!
As you can see, Mediterranean kitchens have a very unique sense of style. It is the epitome of old and new, class and relaxation. For more examples of beautiful Mediterranean kitchens, check out this blog! If this is your dream style, we hope we’ve laid out the road map for you to achieve it! How To Remodel For Resale

As a home remodeling retailer and contracting company, we often get asked questions about how to remodel for resale. Customers want to know how much they should spend, what their top priorities should be and what design choices they should make. Luckily, we can help to answer all of these questions and more to get you prepared to remodel for resell. Contact-Designer-Shop-Ad

How Much To Spend On Your Remodel For Resale

This is one of the most important questions to ask yourself, and should be the first thing you tackle in any remodeling project, especially when you remodel for resale. If you plan on moving, we recommend spending less than 10% of your homes value on your kitchen, and 5% or less of your homes value on your bathroom(s). This is because you are trying to get the highest return on investment. You can only gain so much by doing a remodel, so you need to make sure you spend that magic number that allows you to make additional money on your property when you resell.

What Should My Priorities Be When I Remodel For Resale?

Bathroom Remodel for Resale Traditionally, some of the most important aspects of a home for buyers are the exterior, the kitchen and the bathrooms. However, when you remodel for resale, your specific priorities should really depend on where you live in the country, and in your city. You need to make sure that your renovations are in line with the area that you live. The first thing we recommend you do is talk with a Real Estate Professional and get their opinion. They should be familiar with your area and will help you get a good idea of the important factors in the neighborhood where you live. Take a look at open houses going on close by. Look online at listings that have recently sold. What features or amenities do those homes have? What did they sell for compared to what you would like to get out of your home? Do they seem to have a similar style? Are they more traditional? Modern? Do they all have stainless steel appliances? Do they all have updated kitchens? Hardwood floors? After you take an inventory of what other homes are offering, you’ll have a better understanding of what buyers in the area are going to be accustomed to. If all the homes have hardwood floors but you have slightly dated carpet, you may want to consider flooring as a high priority. If you are one of the few without granite countertops, that may be another important priority. Don’t focus on YOUR personal priorities, focus on the priorities that your market dictates.

What Style Choices Should I Make When I Remodel For Resale?

Kitchen Remodel for Resale Style choices are another factor that your area might dictate. Typically, we always recommend that you opt for a more neutral color scheme. Bold choices may deter some buyers, which is never the goal. When you do a beautiful remodel but go with a neutral palette, the buyer can more easily put the bold pops in there that work for them. This means white, tan, beige, or grey will be your best friend. When deciding on a style for your kitchen or bathroom, you want to stay true to the architecture of your home, while still keeping in mind the types of design that you’ll see in other homes in the area. If your house is a craftsman, you would not be making a good decision going modern in the kitchens or baths. Go craftsman. If your home is modern, go modern. If you have a traditional home, you have slightly more freedom, but again, check what the rest of the neighborhood or area is doing in those important spaces to get an idea of the style that buyers in your area prefer. We do suggest that you add some sort of WOW factor to your kitchen and/or bath, whatever that might be. It really will depend on the style and layout of your home, but adding one element that buyers will really remember, or will make your home stand out from the rest, is important. History has also told us that buyers really love granite countertops. No matter the price point of your home, granite is never a bad thing. If you want to go more high end, that’s fine too, but typically granite will satisfy most buyers.

What Are the Features Buyers Look For?

Pay attention if you’re trying to remodel for resale. According to a 2016 study by Zillow, there are a number of features that caused homes to sell for more, and sell faster, when mentioning these features in their listings. You would be wise to take these into account, as Zillow has access to a plethora of data that most of us don’t. While you don’t have to put every feature that it lists in your home, it is showing you what the general buyer is looking for in 2016. Choose the features that work well with your home, though. Don’t force something just because it’s on the list. Barn Doors Remodel for Resale
  1. Barn Doors – Homes mentioning “barn door” in their listing description sold for a hefty premium — 13.4 percent more than expected and 57 days faster. These rustic sliding doors are often found in modern craftsman-style homes, and are used on bedroom closets and kitchen pantries, among others.
  2. Shaker Cabinets – Listings touting “Shaker cabinets” sold for 9.6 percent above expected and 45 days faster.
  3. Farmhouse Sink – Homes boasting these trendy yet functional kitchen sinks can fetch nearly an 8-percent sales premium.
  4. Subway Tile – From kitchen backsplashes to showers, subway tiles are a beautiful and classic design feature that are sure to catch a buyer’s eye. Homes mentioning subway tiles in their listings sold for nearly 7 percent more than expected and 63 days faster.
  5. Quartz – Usually found on kitchen or bathroom countertops, listings with the word “quartz” saw a 6-percent sales premium. However, homes with “granite” only saw a 4-percent boost in sale price.

Sea Grass

SeaGrass Amerock Hardware
The Amerock Hardware Sea Grass collection is one of my favorites. The coastal vibe is laid back, yet upscale. The linear finishes mimic the textures found in nature, such as seagrass or sun rays. As you can see, the cup pull looks very similar to a shell found on the beach, taking you to a relaxed place every time you look at it!  The feeling your hardware gives you is important, because you not only see it, but feel it, every single day. You can find this Amerock Hardware collection in Golden Champagne, Oil Rubbed Bronze, and Satin Nickel.

Traditional Classics

Traditional-Classics Amerock Hardware
Traditional-Classics Amerock Hardware

The Traditional Classics by Amerock Hardware is just as the name states, a classic. The old world vibe that this collection can bring to a space is second to none. I am a huge fan of crystal hardware and they not only give you various shapes to choose from, but an amber and oil rubbed bronze finish as well! If crystals aren’t your cup of tea, they have the metal side of the collection that could go retro or art deco as well, with unique shapes and detail. Those come in Satin Nickel, Weathered Brass and Weathered Nickel.

Wells

Wells Amerock Hardware

Wells Amerock Hardware

The Wells collection is elegant and captivating. The angular cuts imitates that of a gemstone, which we all know women can appreciate, but it’s not feminine in nature, so bachelors and couples can appreciate this style with ease. This can go in a traditional, farmhouse, rustic, craftsman or transitional space. The Wells collection by Amerock Hardware comes in Oil Rubbed Bronze, Polished Nickel, and Satin Nickel finishes.

10 Miracle Remodeling Products To Save LOADS of Time

Why do I care if remodeling products will save me time? You may have heard that time is money. But really, time is everything. When have you ever been able to spend money to get more time back? Or paid money to spend time with a loved one who is no longer with us? My guess – never. That’s because time is the most valuable asset that we have, so how we use our time can be one of the most important choices in life. The products below are remarkable. They’re skilled at saving you time so that you can get back to doing what you love to do (even if that’s more remodeling)! Some products might cost you a bit more, but the time they will save are well worth it.

Our Top 10 Time Saving Remodeling Products

Permabase Backer Board Builders Surplus Louisville Newport Cincinnati

1.Permabase Board

Permabase is one of those products you wished you had known about before you did your bathroom tile, or kitchen tile, or tile backsplash! Inside Permabase you’ll find Styrofoam beads. These beads allow the board to absorb water at a slower rate. This means that you can spreasd your thinset over your entire (or almost entire) tiling area at one time, and proceed to knock it out. Typically, you have to spread your thinset over very small areas because it will dry up at a pretty fast rate. Doing it this way can be very time consuming.  With Permabase you can thinset once, and focus on flying through your tile!
Pre Mixed Grout Builders Surplus Cincinnati, Newport, Louisville

2. Premixed Grout

Grout can be a pain in the butt when it comes to remodeling products. Getting the consistency right is never easy. You need to make sure it is free of any lumps and is the consistency of toothpaste. It takes about 10 minutes to mix yourself, if you get it right the first time. I’ve constantly had to add more water, stir for a while, add more water, then it’s too thin, add more grout, keep stirring. If it dries up, you have to start from scratch. Premixed grout save time and hassle. Pop it open and get to grouting! You’ll be done before you know it!
premixed tile adhesive Builders Surplus Cincinnati Louisville Newport

3. Premixed Tile Adhesive

Premixed tile adhesive is one of my favorite time saving remodeling products. Mixing Tile adhesive can be a fairly time consuming job. In order to mix tile adhesive, you need water, thinset mortar, safety gloves, glasses, drill machinery and mixing palette, bucket, and about 20 minutes. If you don’t use it quick enough, it will harden. If you don’t use it all in one day, you have to throw it out. That can be a lot of waste! Premixed tile adhesive is a great solution. You pop it open, and begin. You can close the bucket when you’re done and reuse it the next day. You’re saving time, and eliminating waste. When you eliminating waste saves even more time having to remix the next day! The cost is a bit higher, but the time and effort it saves is worth every penny! Both of our Builders Surplus locations sell premixed tile adhesive, so if you’re in the Louisville, Cincinnati or Newport areas, stop by and pick up a bucket!
rectified tile builders surplus cincinnati newport louisville

4. Rectified Tile

While we’re on the subject of tile time saving remodeling products, we can’t leave out rectified tile! Typical tile will vary in length and thickness. This is due to the fact that tile shrinks about 25% when it is baked. If you need a 12″ tile, it starts at 16″, goes into the oven, and comes out ROUGHLY 12″. Because of this, you’ll spend a lot of time using spacers, leveling out each piece of tile individually, making sure that they all appear level. You use grout to “cheat the system” and make everything appear the same. Rectified tile is cut to exact measurements in length and width, meaning you’ll have no lippage (tile jutting out a bit more than others off the wall or floor) and all of your lines will be exact. Rectified tile can be more expensive, but you’ll save money on grout, will complete your tile project much faster, and will get a much more clean look in the end. If you’re looking for rectified tile in Cincinnati, Newport or Louisville, look no further.
installing-split-jamb-prehung-interior-doors Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

5. Split jambs on doors

Split jambs for doors can be a real life saver, especially in older homes. With a typical jamb, it is a fixed width. If you go to install a new door in your home, but your wall varies in thickness, which can happen more often than you think, you will have to build up your wall. If it’s too thick, you could have to feather it out. Both of which can be costly if you hire it out, or time consuming if you do it yourself. Split jambs are adjustable, so you can create the exact width that you need. The pieces fit directly in to each other, and come with casing already on them, which is another great time saver! They can be more expensive than fixed jambs, but if you don’t have the perfect door frame, it will save you money in the end.
prefinished hardwood flooring Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

6. Pre-finished Hardwood

Pre-finished hardwood may sound like a no-brainer, but not everyone has jumped on the bandwagon! You’ll pay more for pre-finished hardwood, but the time and effort you’ll save can be drastic. Unfinished hardwood starts at $1.39/sq. ft. at Builders Surplus, where pre-finished usually starts at about $.50 more, but staining and having to polyurethane, especially if it’s a big project, can take hours. That’s time you could be spending with your family, or on that getaway with friends!
Coretec-Plus-Flooring Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

7. Corked back COREtec

COREtec is one of the coolest flooring products we offer at Builders Surplus in Louisville and Newport, which also serves Cincinnati! One feature of the COREtec plus that we absolutely love is the fact that it comes with a cork backing attached to it! This means you don’t have to buy underlayment, which can cost about $.50 or more /sq. ft! You also save time putting down the underlayment.  Not only that, but COREtec’s cork backing is a great sound barrier, making your home ultra quiet. No more pounding footprints down the hall, or moisture seeping in underneath your flooring! It acts as an incredible moisture barrier.
Crown Moulding Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

8. 16′ Moulding and Crown

Crown moulding is one of those remodeling products that can elevate the look of your space with ease. Most Crown Moulding comes in 8′, 10′ or sometimes 12′ pieces. At Builders Surplus, we sell 16′ pieces of crown and moulding. That means you make fewer cuts, get your moulding up quicker, and it looks much more polished as well.

Shop Coretec Plus LVT Flooring

9. High Quality Paint

High quality paint can seem like a money trap. Why spend $30 more per gallon when you can get the same color for less? Well, higher quality paints, like Sherwin Williams, will provide you brighter pigments that will make for easy application, greater durability, and higher color retention. When paining something like your kitchen cabinets, you’ll be looking at those daily, so better color can make a big difference. The binders in these paints make them more resistant to cracking, blistering and peeling. We suggest you put out a little bit more cash for a better result. You can also get better coverage with most of these paints, meaning less coats, which surprise, saves time! Some remodeling products can easily justify their price.
Mesh Back Tile Builders Surplus Cincinnati Newport Louisville

10. Mesh Back Tile

I know our list of remodeling products has featured a lot of tile time savers, but we can’t help it that they’ve come up with some pretty great solutions! Mesh back tile is a great way to save time on your backsplash tile or wall tile. Mesh back tile comes in sheets, usually about a square foot. The pattern is perfectly in place with a mesh backing on it. Add your thinset and place your sheet. They line up with each other perfectly so it takes a lot of the science out of it. Some mesh back tiles require grout and some don’t. If you find one that doesn’t, you’ll save money there as well! Mesh back tiles can actually be very cost effective depending on the style that you choose.
These top 10 remodeling products are sure to make you happy. So knock out your projects quickly and enjoy your new space –  and your extra time!

Mesh Back Tile: Backsplash Made Quick & Easy

Why Use Backsplash Tile:

Nothing makes quite a statement in such a small space like mosaic backsplash tile. So if your kitchen’s down in the dumps, give it a quick boost of beauty with a tile backsplash. Backsplash tile is usually fairly inexpensive, although you can get into some very pricey pieces if you look at a high end store. I’ve seen $74 per square foot backsplash tile, all the way down to a few dollars a square foot, like we carry here at Builders Surplus. Most people don’t have a ton of square footage above their cabinets, so this is a very cost effective project that will be worth it’s weight in RIO gold.

Why Some People Think Backsplash Is Expensive:

Some backsplash can get expensive, depending on the type that you choose. But where it can get even more pricey is when you factor in the labor of installation. I know some installers that charge a flat rate of $400 or $500, regardless of the size of the kitchen. Other professionals charge about $20 per sq. ft. in addition to the materials, so learning how to tile yourself can be a big money saver!

It can be a pretty intimidating project if you’re a renovation newbie. If you are new to tiling, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it, but you should choose an easy and DIY friendly tile for your first crack at it. Stay away from materials like slate that will crumble easily when you cut them. A ceramic, porcelain, stone or even glass tile will all be solid choices for this. Don’t choose an intricate pattern, such as an arabesque. Even though it may be a mesh back, the cuts will be complicated and you will likely get frustrated and quit, or worse, do a haphazard job that you have to live with for years to come. If you don’t own a wet saw, you’ll need to rent one, but you can do that from a Home Depot of Lowes for a decent price.

Mesh Back Tile: The Best For The Job

Most mosaic tiles are now what they call mesh back tile. Mosaic tile can look difficult to install because there are so many small pieces, but it’s quite the opposite, actually. Mesh back tile and mosaic tiles typically come mounted on 12 x 12-sheets, which makes your installation super quick, especially compared to other types of backsplash. You can install the tile on Saturday and then grout it on Sunday.

Mosaic-Mesh Back Tile Backsplash-

These mosaic patterns are mounted together with a mesh backing. Why is this good for you? Easy. Because the mesh backing comes to about 1 square foot each, your working with a much bigger “tile”, meaning that you have less tiles to place. This makes the job go much quicker. When you’re using a backsplash tile, you may have to lay about 6 tiles to cover what one mesh back tile sheet would cover. When you factor in getting your tile adhesive on each one, adding multiple spacers, and adjusting each tile individually to make sure that they are completely straight, you’ve spend quite a lot of time. With mesh back tile, it’s line up, press and move on. Not only does mesh back cover a larger space, but it’s usually easier to cut. Sometimes you get lucky and you don’t have to do much cutting with a tile saw. If your mosaic is the right size, you might get away with just having to use a utility knife to cut the mesh backing to make the sheets fit. However, you rarely get away with zero cuts, but you do have a chance of cutting much less with mesh back tile.
Some mesh back tiles need grout, while others don’t. If you choose a mesh back tile that doesn’t need grout, you’re already saving money. Cutting down on your installation costs has already got you backsplashin’ on a budget, so that’s just another win.

Satin Brass Handles

Satin Brass handles from Emtek Hardware are so stunning. They are modern, contemporary and chic. They can elevate any space easily. Brass is making a come back in the design world and I am personally thrilled. This satin brass is not your Grandmother’s brass from the 70’s. This is elegant and striking. The contrast it creates is beautiful in kitchens, bathrooms, or living rooms.

Speaking of brass, Emtek Hardware’s Urban Modern Collection is nothing short of amazing. Long bar pulls are definitely in style right now and brass just spices them up even more. Tumbled White Bronze Door and Cabinet Hardware

Tumbled white bronze is a new trend that we’re seeing in hardware metals. It is light and airy, fresh and clean. The look lends itself to the rustic or farmhouse styles very well. The muted tones pair great with natural woods, neutral colors and outdoor backdrops. With stores in Louisville and Newport, Kentucky, which also serves Cincinnati, Ohio, the rustic style is prevalent. Natural design can stand the test of time, as nature never goes out of style.  This hardware gives off a serene feeling that will flow throughout the rest of your space. Choosing Wall Tile to Match Bathroom Vanities

Hola! Alright, so you have your brand new, fresh-out-of-the-wrapping bathroom vanity. It’s placed properly, fastened tight to the interior wall, and maybe you’ve even hooked up the plumbing to the sink along with the countertop. In essence, you’ve never been more excited to wash your hands before in your life. After doing so, that next thought springs into your head, the next step to really put that finishing touch on your vanity – what wall tile will look best? Well, luckily, I’m here to tell you of a couple of options to choose from. And it can be as simple (or as complex) as you’d like it to be!

Contrasting Light Tile to Dark Vanity

If you really want to accentuate your vanity, I’d suggest going with a light-colored tile. The pictures above demonstrate how a lighter tile can make your vanity pop, giving it the proper attention it needs. Contrast in any design platform plays with a viewer’s eyes a bit and is perfect for redirecting or emphasizing a particular piece. Notice how the wall tile from the picture on the left contains smaller dark tiles, as well. We’ll get to this a bit later, but it brings out the darker tone of the vanity, giving a nice blend to the whole bathroom. The picture in the middle sports a classy white tile, and the vanity’s contrast sets it apart, but it works! Never be afraid in the effects of contrast. It adds visual interest and appeals to the eye. Uniformity and blending definitely has its perks, but this design element is simply too attractive to dismiss. Literally.

A Blending of Colors

Sometimes going with the grain just makes sense. As you can see, the pictures above exemplify that statement perfectly. Matching wall tile with the color of your vanity gives your bathroom design a sense of unity and can make for a stunning visual effect. The first picture displays a marvelous, antique-style vanity. The soft brown hue of the wall tile allows the entire display to streamline the eye’s focus in unison. In essence, it’s a beautiful blend of style and color. The picture in the middle is my personal favorite, though. But I’m a sucker for the natural pine stain color, so there’s no surprise there. Notice how the wall tile really hones that color in and makes it shine. Now, earlier I told you how a wall tile can bring out a color in a vanity. The picture on the right is a prime example of how a subtle blend between the vanity and wall color can make your primary color jump out at you! Like an exclamation point. At Builder’s Surplus, we offer a cast of tile brands that will help you pull of this look. We’ll help you in the design process and make sure your vision becomes a reality.

The Products to Choose

Daltile is one of the best products in the business, in my opinion, but you don’t have to take my word for it. You’ve just glanced at their product, and I’m willing to bet you liked what you saw. But, see, that’s the thing about Daltile – there’s so much to choose from. I think we can all agree that when it comes to home restoration/renovation, variety is essential, right? Daltile’s selection is bar none, yes, but it’s the quality that really sets this product from the rest. Established since 1947, the company has acquired a tremendous reputation for their innovative ideas, and it’s directly reflected in their designs. And you know what the best part is? This awesomely legit product is available through special order at Builders Surplus. Come talk to us in person or set something up so we can get things rolling on your bathroom remodel! You can do so here.

11 Remodeling Trends That Stand The Test Of Time

The term “remodeling trends” gives people the impression that these are things that will go out of style. That is just not the case! Some remodeling trends are built to last and those are the kind you should be looking for. As a company who focuses on helping our customers remodel their kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, windows and doors, we know a thing or two about what comes and goes, and what is here to stay. Here are our top suggestions for your remodel if you’re looking for designs that won’t soon go out of style.

Timeless Remodeling Trends

Quartz Countertops

While granite was the top countertop material in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, quartz has given it a run for it’s money in recent years. This is due to the fact that it is super durable, more scratch, stain and heat resistant than granite. It comes in a wider variety of colors, is anti-bacterial, and never needs to be sealed! Can you say win?

Open Concept

Open concept gained popularity in the last decade, and we have no idea why it took so long to catch on. Open concept spaces feel larger. They allow groups to congregate better and more seamlessly, making entertaining a breeze! When cooking dinner, the wife (or husband!) doesn’t feel cut off from the rest of the family. It is easier to see children playing while you do other things around the house with open sight lines. Open concept is definitely a remodeling trend that’s here to stay.

Integrated appliances

At one time, appliances may have been beautiful works of art. We’re not sure when that was, but they must have been, considering how people liked to put them front and center! One remodeling trend that we love is integrated appliances. They blend right in, giving your kitchen a more cohesive look.

White & Grey

White kitchens have always been timeless, and will continue to be. But another great neutral that has popped on the scene has been grey. We love grey cabinets, countertops, walls, and tile (but not all in the same kitchen). It’s easy to add pops of color to either of these colors so they don’t feel boring or sterile. They also allow you to mix up your accent pieces if you ever get bored!

Wood Look Floors

Hardwood flooring is still one of the most popular flooring choices. We’re not surprised. It’s beautiful. BUT, it’t not always right for every house hold. That’s why we’ve been so excited to see the surge of new technologies and remodeling materials that imitate wood, but have many of the benefits that wood doesn’t have. These include LVT  and LVP (Luxury Vinyl Tile and Plank) or wood look tile. They can be used in basements, bathrooms, or any other space that wood wasn’t typically welcome.

Shaker Style

Shaker style cabinets are one of the most popular door style of cabinetry, and for good reason. It is clean and chic enough for modern or contemporary spaces, cozy enough for traditional or farmhouse spaces, or classic enough for traditional. We offer many shaker styles in many different colors that always elevate the look of any space. Go for a clean white or grey, or choose the unfinished shaker and paint it a bold color! Any choice will be gorgeous.

Subway Tile

Subway tile is one of my favorite tile options. As someone who likes things to be on the bold side, this is somewhat surprising. But, when you think about how many different materials, colors, and finishes there are of subway tile, not to mention sizes, subway tile is anything but standard. Then, add in unique patterns or grout colors and you can truly make it your own. You can never go wrong using subway tile.

Creative Storage

I think we can all agree that clutter is not cute. Cabinets bursting at the seams makes a kitchen feel small, and toys around the living room make you feel like your whole house is dirty. The simple solution is to incorporate creative storage. This is one of my favorite remodeling trends, as it’s more about function than fashion, although it does make your home look better as well. Think built in cabinets in the dining or living room, or the ’11 minutes or less’ kitchen organization products!

Soaker Tubs

Soaker tubs were popular in centuries past, and they are just as popular today. While some styles have changed, the result is the same. A freestanding tub with a lot of space to stretch out and relax. These tubs are more comfortable, more spacious, and definitely nicer to look at. We offer many styles of freestanding soaker tubs at an amazing price!

Crown Moulding

Crown Moulding takes the look of any room to a higher level. It gives a more completed, finished feel. Crown is associated with upscale spaces, but you can add it into any home, in any room. Our crown comes in 16′ pieces, as opposed to the usually 8 or 10′, so you get great bang for your buck!

Bold Front Door

Your front door is like the smile of your home. It’s the first impression. Do you want your first impression to be meek and meager, or bold and beautiful! Our guess is the latter. Doors with side lites are great option for adding more elegance as well as natural light in your home. We have beautiful iron, wood, and fiberglass options for your front door refresh!

It's Natural: Color Inspiration from Nature

I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to natural textures and scenes, of old architecture and macro imagery, of my favorite color palettes.  Some of the most gorgeous color palettes can be found outdoors and with a little help, you can come up with an entire scheme for a room.  You’ve dreamed, you’ve built, you’ve remodeled.  The walls are up and the floor is done, so what’s next?  The room’s design!  But where is a good starting point?  I am into design that is centered around color palettes and I use color theory to aid in setting the mood for a room.  Do I want it dark and calming, warm and cozy, trendy and fresh?  There are so many different avenues you could choose, but I think the best way is by taking inspiration from nature.
Today, I have put together four color palettes that utilize the great outdoors as interior inspiration.

Bachelor Pad Essentials

When most people think about bachelor pads, we envision 20-somethings living in a crowded, unkempt apartment with hand-me-down furniture and pizza boxes serving as a coffee table.  It is the kind of place mothers dread thinking about and girlfriends pray they don’t have to set foot in.  But there’s nothing a little tough love and brainstorming can’t fix!  So, fellas, I have a list of bachelor pad essentials that will help you have an amazing cool-guy home that isn’t full of feminine design.  Let’s get started.

Table for the Team

Bachelor Pad Dining Room Table
From poker players to tabletop gamers, every bachelor needs a table where he and his buddies can gather around for some fun.  There are so many designs you can go with that aren’t over the top.  Simple is best, yes?  Go for more length than width, with thin planks and legs.  It won’t seem bulky and you can fit a few more chairs around it.  For those of you in a relationship, you can’t go wrong with a dinner that isn’t being served on a coffee table in front of the TV.

Workspace / Fun Place

Bachelor Pad Industrial Desk
Whether you are plugging away on a project, checking social media, or invested in a MMO campaign, you’ll need a place that is multi-functional.  I like the rough, industrial aspect of this workspace design.  It is dark, a little dramatic, and it looks like it was pulled out of a long, lost wartime factory.  You’ll need plenty of drawers to store important documents and it can also serve as an area to display awards and (a few) of your prized possessions.

Centered Entertainment

Bachelor Pad Essential TV Mount
You aren’t in college anymore, so there is no need to display giant speakers and have your TV on a stand your old roommate’s friend’s friend handed down to you.  Make the television a focal point in the room with a mounted stand.  Shelves on either side of it make for more storage space.  You could also invest in a wireless surround system that doesn’t require cords to be strewn all over the floor.

Treat Yo’ Windows

Curtains in Bachelor Pad
Curtains aren’t only for women and serve for purposes other than decoration.  They are important for insulation, reducing noise, and preventing flooring and furniture fading in a bachelor pad.  Depending on your style, you could choose masculine or neutral colors (cobalt, grey, hunter green.)  There is also the trend of geometric, minimalist patterns (pinstripes, honeycombs, plaid.)  Dress up your windows; we promise you won’t regret it when you want to sleep in late.

Eye for Art

Bachelor Pad Unique Art Ideas
For those of you who can’t stand a bare wall, we’ve got creative ideas to display your favorite things.  An architect or designer or could have engineer prints made of his favorite projects; a sports fanatic could have vintage memorabilia displayed in shadow boxes.  You don’t have to purchase new art–use the things you have!  This creative design of tools hanging from the wall is both aesthetically pleasing and you already have everything you need to get handy around the home.  Other ideas include: framing comic books, collaging old nautical maps, and using floating shelves to show of your growing vinyl collection.

For more ideas on how to style your bachelor pad, check out the Pinterest board we have put together.  If you have an amazing design idea in your own home, feel free to tag us on Instagram @builderssurplus and we’ll be sure to re-gram it!
