Choosing Wall Tile to Match Bathroom Vanities

Hola! Alright, so you have your brand new, fresh-out-of-the-wrapping bathroom vanity. It’s placed properly, fastened tight to the interior wall, and maybe you’ve even hooked up the plumbing to the sink along with the countertop. In essence, you’ve never been more excited to wash your hands before in your life. After doing so, that next thought springs into your head, the next step to really put that finishing touch on your vanity – what wall tile will look best? Well, luckily, I’m here to tell you of a couple of options to choose from. And it can be as simple (or as complex) as you’d like it to be!

Contrasting Light Tile to Dark Vanity

If you really want to accentuate your vanity, I’d suggest going with a light-colored tile. The pictures above demonstrate how a lighter tile can make your vanity pop, giving it the proper attention it needs. Contrast in any design platform plays with a viewer’s eyes a bit and is perfect for redirecting or emphasizing a particular piece. Notice how the wall tile from the picture on the left contains smaller dark tiles, as well. We’ll get to this a bit later, but it brings out the darker tone of the vanity, giving a nice blend to the whole bathroom. The picture in the middle sports a classy white tile, and the vanity’s contrast sets it apart, but it works! Never be afraid in the effects of contrast. It adds visual interest and appeals to the eye. Uniformity and blending definitely has its perks, but this design element is simply too attractive to dismiss. Literally.

A Blending of Colors

Sometimes going with the grain just makes sense. As you can see, the pictures above exemplify that statement perfectly. Matching wall tile with the color of your vanity gives your bathroom design a sense of unity and can make for a stunning visual effect. The first picture displays a marvelous, antique-style vanity. The soft brown hue of the wall tile allows the entire display to streamline the eye’s focus in unison. In essence, it’s a beautiful blend of style and color. The picture in the middle is my personal favorite, though. But I’m a sucker for the natural pine stain color, so there’s no surprise there. Notice how the wall tile really hones that color in and makes it shine. Now, earlier I told you how a wall tile can bring out a color in a vanity. The picture on the right is a prime example of how a subtle blend between the vanity and wall color can make your primary color jump out at you! Like an exclamation point. At Builder’s Surplus, we offer a cast of tile brands that will help you pull of this look. We’ll help you in the design process and make sure your vision becomes a reality.

This awesomely legit product is available through special order at Builders Surplus. Come talk to us in person or set something up so we can get things rolling on your bathroom remodel! 11 Remodeling Trends That Stand The Test Of Time

The term “remodeling trends” gives people the impression that these are things that will go out of style. That is just not the case! Some remodeling trends are built to last and those are the kind you should be looking for. As a company who focuses on helping our customers remodel their kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, windows and doors, we know a thing or two about what comes and goes, and what is here to stay. Here are our top suggestions for your remodel if you’re looking for designs that won’t soon go out of style.

Timeless Remodeling Trends

Quartz Countertops

While granite was the top countertop material in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, quartz has given it a run for it’s money in recent years. This is due to the fact that it is super durable, more scratch, stain and heat resistant than granite. It comes in a wider variety of colors, is anti-bacterial, and never needs to be sealed! Can you say win?

Open Concept

Open concept gained popularity in the last decade, and we have no idea why it took so long to catch on. Open concept spaces feel larger. They allow groups to congregate better and more seamlessly, making entertaining a breeze! When cooking dinner, the wife (or husband!) doesn’t feel cut off from the rest of the family. It is easier to see children playing while you do other things around the house with open sight lines. Open concept is definitely a remodeling trend that’s here to stay.

Integrated appliances

At one time, appliances may have been beautiful works of art. We’re not sure when that was, but they must have been, considering how people liked to put them front and center! One remodeling trend that we love is integrated appliances. They blend right in, giving your kitchen a more cohesive look.

White & Grey

White kitchens have always been timeless, and will continue to be. But another great neutral that has popped on the scene has been grey. We love grey cabinets, countertops, walls, and tile (but not all in the same kitchen). It’s easy to add pops of color to either of these colors so they don’t feel boring or sterile. They also allow you to mix up your accent pieces if you ever get bored!

Wood Look Floors

Hardwood flooring is still one of the most popular flooring choices. We’re not surprised. It’s beautiful. BUT, it’t not always right for every house hold. That’s why we’ve been so excited to see the surge of new technologies and remodeling materials that imitate wood, but have many of the benefits that wood doesn’t have. These include LVT  and LVP (Luxury Vinyl Tile and Plank) or wood look tile. They can be used in basements, bathrooms, or any other space that wood wasn’t typically welcome.

Shaker Style

Shaker style cabinets are one of the most popular door style of cabinetry, and for good reason. It is clean and chic enough for modern or contemporary spaces, cozy enough for traditional or farmhouse spaces, or classic enough for traditional. We offer many shaker styles in many different colors that always elevate the look of any space. Go for a clean white or grey, or choose the unfinished shaker and paint it a bold color! Any choice will be gorgeous.

Subway Tile

Subway tile is one of my favorite tile options. As someone who likes things to be on the bold side, this is somewhat surprising. But, when you think about how many different materials, colors, and finishes there are of subway tile, not to mention sizes, subway tile is anything but standard. Then, add in unique patterns or grout colors and you can truly make it your own. You can never go wrong using subway tile.

Creative Storage

I think we can all agree that clutter is not cute. Cabinets bursting at the seams makes a kitchen feel small, and toys around the living room make you feel like your whole house is dirty. The simple solution is to incorporate creative storage. This is one of my favorite remodeling trends, as it’s more about function than fashion, although it does make your home look better as well. Think built in cabinets in the dining or living room, or the ’11 minutes or less’ kitchen organization products!

Soaker Tubs

Soaker tubs were popular in centuries past, and they are just as popular today. While some styles have changed, the result is the same. A freestanding tub with a lot of space to stretch out and relax. These tubs are more comfortable, more spacious, and definitely nicer to look at. We offer many styles of freestanding soaker tubs at an amazing price!

Crown Moulding

Crown Moulding takes the look of any room to a higher level. It gives a more completed, finished feel. Crown is associated with upscale spaces, but you can add it into any home, in any room. Our crown comes in 16′ pieces, as opposed to the usually 8 or 10′, so you get great bang for your buck!

Bold Front Door

Your front door is like the smile of your home. It’s the first impression. Do you want your first impression to be meek and meager, or bold and beautiful! Our guess is the latter. Doors with side lites are great option for adding more elegance as well as natural light in your home. We have beautiful iron, wood, and fiberglass options for your front door refresh!

Using Technology To Organize Your Kitchen Design Ideas

How do you renovate in the 21st century? With technology, of course! In the past, a kitchen design required 100+ magazines, a sharp pari of scissors (or two), glue sticks, cardboard, and a whole lot of time and possibly a headache. Today, that’s just not the case. Organizing your next kitchen or bath remodel can be a challenge, but the technological developments in the design space have made leaps and bounds. With so many ideas and so little space, you’ll love the new possibilities! Technology can make your reno life a whole lot easier and a whole lot more organized. This not only benefits you, but your designer as well. Our free design services can help you find your style, but the process can be much easier and quicker if you already have your ideas together. Check out these three tech solutions below to get started!

One of the best aspects of Houzz for keeping your kitchen designs organized or finding new ideas is their Ideabook feature. Houzz says their ideabook is where people can “store ideas and build dreams.” You can also use the ideabook to communicate with other people working on your project.

Use the idea book to collect photos of kitchens you like and then email them to your designer. This will help your designer pinpoint the styles, colors, and layouts that speak to you.

Pinterest works like Houzz’ ideabook in that you can collect a variety of different inspirations for a kitchen, bath, or home remodel and then be able to share them easily with others. Pinterest stands out, however, in that it is very easy to view what other people are sharing and get inspiration from other users’ collections.

Pinterest is also a great source of DIY inspiration for your home remodel. From projects like unique drawer and cabinet pulls to upgraded lighting solutions, Pinterest has it all.

Now you can see just how simple it is to prepare for and organize your remodeling ideas. Get your laptops out, and your thinking hats on. This is going to be fun!

Exotic Wood: Hardwood Flooring That Excites

Talking about exotic wood reminds me of steamy, overgrown rainforests and secluded, hard-to-reach areas in the jungles of Africa. But in reality, the term “exotic wood” just refers to any lumber that is grown and harvested outside of the United States.

Beautiful exotic hardwood floors are growing more and more popular by the day as the modern lumber industry has streamlined process of obtaining the once difficult to source lumber. Exotic hardwoods make attractive and durable floors and their unique coloring can spice up any room or interior design.

Do you know what to look for when picking out your next exotic hardwood floor? These three tips will make sure you get the right exotic wood floors for your needs.

exotic wood 1

Color Change in Exotic Wood

One of the most common concerns consumers have when it comes to exotic hardwood flooring is that the vast majority of species will change color over time. Domestic hardwoods like oak, may never change in color, but popular exotic woods like Brazilian Cherry can darken very rapidly and dramatically. But why?

There are two main reasons why most (not all) exotic hardwood floors experience more color change than domestic hardwoods. Each species of wood reacts differently when exposed to light. Just like when we get a tan at the beach, the same effect happens to wood! Even each plank of wood can age and color differently compared to the rest of planks in the same floor.

wood floors hundreds

The second reason that color change in exotic wood is more noticeable comes down to the finish. If your wood is finished with oil, it can take on a darker, more amber hue over time when compared to water-based finishes that remain clear.

If you want to preserve the original color of your wood, make sure to limit light exposure by keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the brightest parts of the day and look for hardwoods that are finished with “UV blockers” and non-yellowing coatings.

exotic wood 2

Exotic Wood Flooring Hardness

Did you know that most domestic hardwood floors are actually softer than their exotic counterparts? Wood flooring is grading using a scale called the Janka hardness test. This test measures the resistance of wood to both denting and wear. The species of wood chosen determines the overall hardness rating and other factors, like the topcoat or finish, don’t make a substantial difference in the overall rating.

Most domestic hardwoods rank in the low to medium range in hardness. White Oak is a common domestic flooring and it rates at 1360 on the Janka scale, while the most common exotic hardwood, Brazilian Cherry, rates at 2350. More uncommon flooring such as Patagonian Rosewood rates at a whopping 3840 on the scale.

But remember that hardness is just one of many deciding factors available to choose from when deciding which hardwood floor is best for you. In today’s modern flooring industry, both exotic and domestic floors are built to last a lifetime (and then some).

exotic wood 3

Availability of Exotic Wood

Exotic hardwood floors are available for sale across the U.S. and for t he most common varieties, there is rarely a shortage. In the past, however, some exotic hardwoods were harvested with less-than-ethical practices. Some species were harvested from protected areas and reserves while others were stolen from land owners without their authorization.

browse exotic wood 2

That’s why the U.S. has extended the Lacey Act, the regulatory law that guided lumber practices in the U.S., to also govern wood that is harvested from overseas. This law ensures that all lumber products coming into the country provide proof of provenance, including the country of harvest and the the species of all wood contained in the product.

Now you can rest assured that your new exotic hardwood floor will be ethically and sustainable harvested.

Wilsonart: Laminate Countertops With a High End Look

Laminate Countertops
Some homeowners don’t consider laminate countertops much of an upgrade when redoing their kitchen. At most, they probably think that it’s better than no countertops. But laminate isn’t all bad! In fact, you’re doing yourself a disservice on an affordable, and stylish option by not considering it!
Like all laminate countertops, Wilsonart makes theirs out of a combination of layers of decorative and craft papers that are fused with acrylic, wood fibers and other hardeners in a high pressure press machine. Unlike other brands of laminate countertops, Wilsonart’s holds all sorts of seals for sustainability compliance from several different organizations concerned with the health of us humans and the sustainability of our planet. They’re indoor air certified and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, just to name a couple.
SHopnow
Other than the fact that Wilsonart is clearly raising the bar on how laminate countertop quality and manufacturing processes are done, here are some other reasons that you should consider a laminate countertop during your next kitchen or bath renovation.

Quick & Lazy Cleanup

I would choose a laminate countertop for this reason alone. I hate cleaning – I mean, who honestly likes to clean? As long as you don’t use any abrasive cleaners on the surface then all you need is a damp rag and a little bit of soap. Wipe up any spots or spills and you’re done!

Minimal Maintenance

With granite, marble or butcher block countertops there can be quite a bit of maintenance. Butcher block needs to be re-oiled, and granite and marble need to be re-sealed. Laminate just needs a trivet to protect it from hot pans and a cutting board to prevent scratching. And unlike other solid surface countertops that chip, you’ve got to replace the whole thing; with laminate countertops if a piece chips off you can typically replace a much smaller area to fix it!
laminate countertops 2

More Options

Sure, granite and other solid surface countertops have a large color selection to choose from but the printing processes of old have come a long way! Today, laminate countertops can mimic stone, wood, or any other natural material. Not to mention that you can also choose from an array of funky colors and patterns, and that brown line that appears at the edge? Forget about it. Laminate countertops can look as solid as ever, even with specialty edges! Wilsonart, in particular takes everything a step further. With them you can custom design your own laminate countertops! Because it can be cut into just about any shape there’s no limit to what you can have created just for you and your kitchen!
marble-options

Price on Point

Laminate countertops are probably the least expensive option – you know, aside from having no countertops. The price for laminate can start at about $25 per square foot (including installation). Compare a $1,500 dollar price for laminate countertops to the $5000 dollar price of a marble countertop! That’s money I can spend elsewhere, on me, or the rest of my home.

Down side to Laminate Countertops?

There isn’t much. Laminate doesn’t do as well as raising your ROI (return on investment) in your home, so if you’re selling it might not be for you. As well it can dull and discolor from direct heat (remember when I said to use a trivet?), or abrasive and harsh chemical cleaners. It also scratches easily (I also said something about using a cutting board). No product is perfect but following some simple precautions should keep your laminate countertops looking beautiful for years to come!
SHopnow
Laminate gets a bad wrap for being on the cheap end of the spectrum, whether it be flooring or especially countertops. The thing is, that’s just not the case anymore! Laminate countertops have come a long way in the past several years! They might not be the most popular but with a low price point and thousands of options to choose from that are becoming more and more realistic every day, there is no reason why you shouldn’t at least give it a nod and a wink!

How To Use Ledge Stone In Any Space

Ledge stone is an incredible building material. Ledge stone is an all natural stacked stone used for siding, veneer and cladding, among many other things in home improvement. It is used in homes as well as businesses for both exterior and interior applications. The thin veneer is cut from real, all natural stone. Typical big box stores only offer 1 color of this amazing product, but we carry 8 different colors at all times, and can easily order 26 more that can be picked up in about 2 weeks. Below we’ve put together a compilation of ways that ledge stone can be used in your home to really make your space unique!

1. Ledge Stone Fireplace

Ledge stone can be used as a fireplace surround or above the fireplace to make a striking statement. It can look modern, craftsman, or rustic depending on the color you choose and the surrounding accents and building materials.

2. Ledge Stone Column

Columns can be tricky. In some instances, they can look great with crown molding alone, but other times, you just want to cover them up to make a bolder statement. Reclaimed wood and brick are two options you could use, but ledge stone is another great way to go! You can easily coordinate it with any decor or color palette.

3. Ledge Stone Accent Wall

A ledge stone accent wall can look quite dramatic, especially in an area with high ceilings. Behind a staircase is one great option, but there really is no ‘bad’ place for ledge stone.

4. Ledge Stone Grill Cover

This is one idea that I haven’t seen before and it’s most likely one I’ll be doing in my own home. This is an easy way to elevate the look of a basic appliance. This blends in so well with the outdoor elements that it makes it feel as though the grill was born to live on your patio!

5. Ledge Stone Bathroom Shower Walls

The raw look that the ledge stone gives on these bathroom shower walls is breathtaking! While you would opt for a much smoother stone on the shower floor, this texture definitely takes this bathroom design to another level.

6. Ledge Stone Backsplash

Ledge stone backsplash is not only classic, but it’s edgy. It is interesting without being overpowering. There is a color of ledge stone to match any cabinet color, as demonstrated by the ‘California Gold’ color paired with the rustic green Wellborn cabinets below. This craftsman look is spot on!

7. Ledge Stone Island Cover

What a great idea to add an extra textural element to your kitchen. Typically you’ll find solid wood, wainscoting, or bead board around an island, but this is definitely a trend I hope to see more of! It gives a very natural feel to this fresh kitchen.

8. Ledge Stone Exteriors

Ledge stone on a homes exterior is something that most people have seen at least once before. It is durable, beautiful, and can add an element of class to the outside of any building. I love this look and it can be added to one or two surfaces or the entire front of your home.

As you can see, ledge stone is an incredibly versatile building material that can be used in any space in your home or business. What is you favorite use for ledge stone?  Share in the comments below! Want to learn more? Stop by and see us at our Lousiville or Newport/Cincinnati locations!

This arctic ice glass subway tile is a stunner. This color can coordinate with so many different color schemes and design styles, working with masculine elements as well as feminine. There is no limit in terms of color options for subway tile, so let your imagination roam!

2. Dark Grout Delight

This is one of my favorite ways to put your own spin on subway tile. There are actually numerous grout colors to choose from, but most stay with a standard white or cream. My favorite is grey or black when using a white subway tile. It definitely makes a statement and will separate your space from the rest!

3. The next grey-te thing in subway tile

Grey has been on trend in the last year, and the subway tile department is no different! This gorgeous Highland Park Dove Grey Subway Tile has an incredible crackle finish that is completely unique! This backsplash tile is handcrafted, making every piece unique. Grey is a neutral that can easily replace the typical white tile you may have been considering before, and will work very well with many colors and styles!

4. Peculiar Patterns

Instead of going with the same old subway pattern, try mixing it up! There are many ways that you can make it your own, like the windmill pattern shown to the right, or the perpendicular. You can even go vertical and side by side for a simple, clean look.

5. Happy In Herringbone

The herringbone pattern is a favorite of mine, and it works perfectly with any size or color of subway tile. While the installation may be slightly more difficult than the standard, the look you achieve is well worth it.

The new trend in subway tile comes in a larger format. These 4 x 12 pieces featured below can make a space feel larger. I can’t wait to see how many people start to embrace this new size!

8. Handcrafted Creations

Handcrafted goods are not only in style, they are unique and beautiful. The variations in each piece make it something to admire. This antique white subway tile has a wavy finish that makes it look markedly different than its smoother subway counterpart. It’s just another way to turn an old favorite into something a little bit more fun!

It's Natural: Color Inspiration from Nature

I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to natural textures and scenes, of old architecture and macro imagery, of my favorite color palettes.  Some of the most gorgeous color palettes can be found outdoors and with a little help, you can come up with an entire scheme for a room.  You’ve dreamed, you’ve built, you’ve remodeled.  The walls are up and the floor is done, so what’s next?  The room’s design!  But where is a good starting point?  I am into design that is centered around color palettes and I use color theory to aid in setting the mood for a room.  Do I want it dark and calming, warm and cozy, trendy and fresh?  There are so many different avenues you could choose, but I think the best way is by taking inspiration from nature.
Today, I have put together four color palettes that utilize the great outdoors as interior inspiration.

Bachelor Pad Essentials

When most people think about bachelor pads, we envision 20-somethings living in a crowded, unkempt apartment with hand-me-down furniture and pizza boxes serving as a coffee table.  It is the kind of place mothers dread thinking about and girlfriends pray they don’t have to set foot in.  But there’s nothing a little tough love and brainstorming can’t fix!  So, fellas, I have a list of bachelor pad essentials that will help you have an amazing cool-guy home that isn’t full of feminine design.  Let’s get started.

Table for the Team

Bachelor Pad Dining Room Table
From poker players to tabletop gamers, every bachelor needs a table where he and his buddies can gather around for some fun.  There are so many designs you can go with that aren’t over the top.  Simple is best, yes?  Go for more length than width, with thin planks and legs.  It won’t seem bulky and you can fit a few more chairs around it.  For those of you in a relationship, you can’t go wrong with a dinner that isn’t being served on a coffee table in front of the TV.

Workspace / Fun Place

Bachelor Pad Industrial Desk
Whether you are plugging away on a project, checking social media, or invested in a MMO campaign, you’ll need a place that is multi-functional.  I like the rough, industrial aspect of this workspace design.  It is dark, a little dramatic, and it looks like it was pulled out of a long, lost wartime factory.  You’ll need plenty of drawers to store important documents and it can also serve as an area to display awards and (a few) of your prized possessions.

Centered Entertainment

Bachelor Pad Essential TV Mount
You aren’t in college anymore, so there is no need to display giant speakers and have your TV on a stand your old roommate’s friend’s friend handed down to you.  Make the television a focal point in the room with a mounted stand.  Shelves on either side of it make for more storage space.  You could also invest in a wireless surround system that doesn’t require cords to be strewn all over the floor.

Treat Yo’ Windows

Curtains in Bachelor Pad
Curtains aren’t only for women and serve for purposes other than decoration.  They are important for insulation, reducing noise, and preventing flooring and furniture fading in a bachelor pad.  Depending on your style, you could choose masculine or neutral colors (cobalt, grey, hunter green.)  There is also the trend of geometric, minimalist patterns (pinstripes, honeycombs, plaid.)  Dress up your windows; we promise you won’t regret it when you want to sleep in late.

Eye for Art

Bachelor Pad Unique Art Ideas
For those of you who can’t stand a bare wall, we’ve got creative ideas to display your favorite things.  An architect or designer or could have engineer prints made of his favorite projects; a sports fanatic could have vintage memorabilia displayed in shadow boxes.  You don’t have to purchase new art–use the things you have!  This creative design of tools hanging from the wall is both aesthetically pleasing and you already have everything you need to get handy around the home.  Other ideas include: framing comic books, collaging old nautical maps, and using floating shelves to show of your growing vinyl collection.

For more ideas on how to style your bachelor pad, check out the Pinterest board we have put together.  If you have an amazing design idea in your own home, feel free to tag us on Instagram @builderssurplus and we’ll be sure to re-gram it!

Express Yourself with Espresso Cabinets

I love minimalism and subtlety — espresso cabinets are the epitome of just that.  Right now, the trend for kitchen cabinets is white, white, white, and as much as I appreciate white cabinetry, the upkeep can be an absolute nightmare.  For people like me (with three pets) and my friends (with young kids), the maintenance of light cabinets sounds like more work than I am willing to put in with my limited time.

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet

The argument from several designers is that espresso is out, it is overdone, it can be too bold of a statement in a centrally focused room of a home.  However, I think it is all how you style a cabinet.  Take the Ginger Creek American Shaker in mocha.  At first glance, it is just a simple, dark cabinet, but upon closer inspection, I think the tones are rich and warm.  Those qualities coupled with unique design can turn these cabinets from simple to simply elegant, charming, sophisticated, subtle–whatever your style may be.  Here are some design ideas when shopping for espresso cabinets!

Modern Mocha

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
Keeping this palette as neutral as possible, I am letting Cambria’s Praa Sands custom quartz countertop do all the talking for this kitchen design.  There is a lot of movement in the quartz, a beautiful variation of color, and strands of neutral tones complement the espresso cabinets.  Pairing it with the sleek geometry of the Elements Stanton pull and the clean lines of our metallic gray subway tile, this kitchen design is both refined and understated.

Shop Now Kitchen Cabinets

Textured Tones

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
If the espresso cabinets in this design were an outfit, the California gold legder panel backsplash would be its jewelry.  There is so much warmth and it is dense with a wild, outdoorsy character.  I wanted that to be the focal point and draw the eye up from the cabinetry to the natural beauty of the Colosseum Quartz countertop.  These countertops are extremely durable, resisting scratches, stains, and heat to remain looking beautiful for years.  Top the cabinets off with the Madison pull in the brushed oil rubbed bronze finish and you end up with a provincial kitchen with a posh twist.

Compromising Coupling

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
A lot of the times, couples that are renovating houses cannot decide between their own two styles.  Nine times out of ten, a room’s design is going to eventually be based on one person’s idea.  Since a kitchen is one of the few gathering places in a home, it should be a destination for compromise.  This design idea is all about mixing elements.  From the urbane espresso cabinets to the rustic vibe of our custom built butcher block countertops, we can see there is a lot of masculine hints to the room.  I like the idea of blending that with dainty white penny backsplash and the rounder, softer Madison knob by Elements.  This makes for a beautiful half-and-half composition.

Attic Remodel: Ideas for an A+ Attic

Nowadays, every room in a house needs to be utilized.  With so many unique storage options, home owners aren’t using their attics for holiday decorations and old clothes anymore.  They are turning the top portions of their homes into top priority renovations.  From retreats to home gyms, an attic can be used for multiple purposes.  Gone are the days of a musty, dusty space without insulation and questionable floorboards.  Now is the time for an attic remodel!  Here are some fresh looks for your otherwise ignored space.

Guest Hideaway

Attic Remodel Bedroom Idea

Give your guests peace and quiet with a room all their own, without being attached to the heart of the house.  Allow the structural beams to remain exposed and add a large chandelier to give that five-star feel.  People will be begging to visit in no time!

Mats and Mantras

Who says that you can’t make it your own space to clear your head?  Clean up the clutter and get to meditating by turning your attic into a personal yoga studio.  This can be achieved in a manner of styles: from exotic to minimalist, you’ll never want to leave this inner-calming room.  This is an ultimate attic remodel.

Book Nook Attic Remodel

Attic Remodel Idea Library

Whether you are an avid reader or you have a collection bursting the seams of your home office, this attic idea can will have every bookworm curled up and ready for a text-based adventure.  Short and stout shelves add more storage, and you could even warm up the space with large area rugs.

Kids Create

Most of the rooms in our homes are dedicated to us, the adults.  Well, why not make a space for the little ones to explore, craft, and enjoy without supervision?  And since some attics don’t have the headspace to house us grown-ups, you could spruce up the room for a youthful hideaway fit for kids of all ages!

Foyer Style: Grand Entrances

Foyer Style: Foyer

Foyer Style

A great first impression can be hard to achieve, but not if your home has a well-designed foyer.  From the front door to the artwork, the foyer sets the precedence for the rest of the home.  It should fit the style of the owners without overwhelming visitors.

We’ve seen a lot of entryways.  Families typically collage their walls with tons of pictures from their fun-filled adventures, bachelor’s mark this as their place to kick off shoes and throw keys, and empty-nesters are left wondering what exactly to do with a space that was used for so many years.  Check out our ideas to revamp your foyer and turn it into the featured room it is supposed to be in your house!

Oh, Hello!

Foyer Style: Door

The front door sets the tone for the entire home, so some would say it is the most important aspect of the foyer.  There are so many styles to choose from at Builders Supply.  We carry a variety of diverse woods and grains, so the choices are endless.  Our AAW, Surplus, and Signamark doors range from traditional to standout, and can be the keynote in your entryway.

Foyer Style: Shop Doors

Funky Fluorescents

Foyer Style: Lighting

The eye of your guest is going to travel upwards–make them say “wow!” with a chandelier that is different from the norm!  Mismatched pendants, unique colors, weathered metals–the possibilities are limitless when it comes to lighting the room.  And the best part?  Most fixtures are pretty green, so you won’t be putting a dent in your pocket with your beautiful investment.

Hidden Treasures

Foyer Style: Storage

You don’t want the precious space in your foyer taken up by bulky furniture.  We suggest selecting storage pieces that are pretty and practical.  There is no reason for shoes, keys, or bags to overwhelm the space when they can be hidden away in a bench or console table.

Reflecting the Details

Foyer Style: Mirror

Whether you are heading out for the evening or your visitors are just arriving, a mirror in your foyer can both serve the purpose of making the entryway seem larger and to check how you look!  A mirror can also make for a prominent feature, depending on the shape, texture, and color of the frame.

Pantone Color of the Year 2016

A softer take on color for 2016: For the first time, the blending of two shades – Rose Quartz and Serenity are chosen as the PANTONE Color of the Year. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

Pantone Color of the Year: 2016

Every year, Pantone, the color authority of the world, releases what they dub their ‘Color of the Year.’ This color (or in this case “these colors”) will affect every aspect of the design industries for the next several years! From fashion- to graphic- to interior design, everyone who is up to snuff on their design trends will be looking to these two specific Pantone colors for inspiration!
While you may think that Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) is just another pink, and Serenity (Pantone 15-3919) like any other blue, that is where you would be very very wrong, my friend! Pantone boasts thousands of colors (some with or without more simple names) with their own special number. You would not be using Rose Quartz if you used any other shade of pink from the Pantone book nor would you necessarily be using Serenity if you used the color picker on your computer! Pantone colors are very specific and any Pantone color booklet will let you know all the numbers you need in RGB, CMYK, or whatever other method your industry uses to select colors to achieve your chosen color!

Rose Quartz
Pantone: Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz is a powdery, baby-girl pink. This color is perfect for Barbie and her dream home, although some may harken back to the pink tiled bathrooms from the 70s and 80s with horror and disgust, however, done correctly any pink room can be the perfect place to sit back and relax! Take advantage of quartz sinks and counter tops to really play into the name!

Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide

Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: FeaturedA
Copper Sinks – when you say copper sinks you might think of an old brown and green bowl sitting on a vanity in the old west before there was plumbing; however, copper sinks today are much different than they were way back when, they are a beautiful statement piece to any kitchen design or bathroom remodel. They’re link shiny red-brown chameleons – constantly changing and always stunning to look at and watch change over time. There are many reasons why you might want to add a copper sink to your kitchen design or bathroom remodel; it could be their unique and diverse style or their ability to be antimicrobial. Whatever the reason for your consideration of a copper sink, there is no denying that it will be the talking point of your guests around the dining room table.

Properties of Copper Sinks

Copper sinks are as unique as they come, in both style and function. When seeking copper sinks you should look for sinks that are 99% pure copper, preferably with that remaining 1% being zinc, which will add to it’s strength. Do be warned that when ordering copper sinks from China, India, or the Middle East as lead can be used as a filler because it has similar workability to copper and is inexpensive. Lead is also harmful to humans – so be cautious when ordering outside of the United States.
Copper is an extremely soft metal which means that it can be shaped and hammered into different designs to turn an average bowl into a stunning masterpiece!

Copper Sinks: Mount & Style

Like any other sink, copper sinks also come in a variety of styles and mounts. They can be unadorned or extremely elaborate – it all just depends on what you’re looking for and what you’re willing to spend. Sink mounts refer to how the sink is installed and will look on the countertop, while style generally refers to the finish of the product.

Decorative, Farmhouse

Decorative sinks tend to be more ornate and have intricate designs either hammered or stamped into the metal. They are extremely elegant and with the reactive and changing nature of copper sinks they will always look a little different the next copper sink! Farmhouse, is the kind of mount, and is not unique to copper sinks. Farmhouse mounted sink are also called an apron mount where the front of the sink is exposed or overhangs from the the cabinets below it. Farmhouse is a great look and feel to go for with more country, or traditional style kitchens. Now, just because these two are listed together doesn’t mean that’s how all copper sinks are. You can most certainly get a decorative sink with a different mount or just a plain farmhouse mount with no decoration.
Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Decorative Farmhouse

Hammered, Drop In

Hammered sinks are less ornate than more decorative style sinks, however they’re more unique than plain or brushed finish copper sinks. Hammered sinks give a faceted look to a shiny sink that has little patina to it, like you’re washing dishes in an amber bowl. When your sink has a more patina’d look to it, it makes the bowl appear more rustic and handmade – craftsmanship like. Drop In sinks are more common because their weight is what largely keeps them in place on the counter top, and thus are really easy to install.
Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Hammered Drop In

Brushed, Under Mount

A copper sink – with little else to it will be eye catching, so if you’re wanting something more simple than what else can be seen on here then looking towards a brushed finish is a simple and understated, yet still elegant solution. Under mount sinks are beautiful because the countertop sits directly above them, giving the space a more modern and seamless look.

Hammered Under Mount

Hammered Finish Under Mount Sinks

Finished, Vessel

There are different kinds of finishes, the kind that I am referencing here are copper sinks that have something other than a wax or sealant to finish them, such as glass or acrylic. The bonus to this is that the copper will stay in all it’s original, shiny, beautiful, glory – if you can’t stand slight inconsistencies or change in your sink finish then this is the way to go! A vessel mount sink appears to be a simple bowl sitting atop your vanity or countertop. These are decorative of themselves and make great statement pieces without needing any kind of finish! Vessel sinks come in many different shapes and styles. If you want a unique looking sink that goes beyond just copper, vessel sinks are as unique and as out there as you can get!
Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Unique Vessel

Pros & Cons of Copper Sinks

Everything in this world has its ups and downs. When it comes to sinks it just depends on what you want, and how much you can spend. If antimicrobial properties are important to you then you’re only bet is copper.

Pros:

  • They’re beautiful: It’s that simple. Copper sinks are some of the most beautiful and unique! The fact that they’re made from one sheet with no seams also makes them like works of art. They can be hammered and shaped to almost any dimension. Copper sinks do form a patina as they’re exposed to water and air, so if you love the original color you can have it coated to preserve it’s beauty. If you like their reactivity, the ever changing color and patina of copper sinks are just a bonus to their beauty. This goes beyond copper sinks being beautiful, they literally have countless combinations of finish and style. Some look like regular sinks and others look like works of art!
  • They’re antimicrobial: This unique property of copper sinks makes them favorable for kitchens, while bacteria can live on many sinks surfaces for weeks at a time, bacteria on copper sinks can only last a matter of hours. However, the EPA states that you shouldn’t coat (paint, lacquer, varnish, wax, etc.) your copper sinks if you wish to keep the antimicrobial nature if the metal.
  • Copper is 100% recyclable: Copper retains 95% of it’s original value when being sold after recycling. In fact, it’s likely that the copper sink that you’re getting is already made from previously recycled copper.
  • They’re durable: Depending on the gauge (thickness) of copper that your sink comes in will definitely affect its durability, the thicker the copper the less likely to dent it will be. Copper sinks are resistant to corrosion and rust, making it an ideal choice for a sink material.

Cons:

  • They’re highly reactive: If you want your copper sinks to maintain their color you’ll need to coat them – which will rid of you of the antimicrobial properties of the metal as well. Acidic foods and drinks, abrasive cleaners, and extremely hot or cold cookware can change the color of your sink, darkening it and leaving odd colored spots. Granted, as the patina darkens everything will become more uniform as time progresses. However, unless they’re sealed periodically it is extremely hard to maintain a copper sinks original shine.
  • They’re expensive: More than just being an expensive choice for a sink, they’re also expensive to repair. Copper is a very soft and malleable metal, so it can be easily dented and warped, meaning that you’ll likely need to repair it more often than other sink materials. Keep in mind that thinner gauge copper sinks will dent more easily than thicker gauge copper sinks.
  • They need more maintenance: To keep it’s shine and finish in tact for as long as possible you should dry the sink with a soft towel after every use and you should be careful with what products you use to clean it as some more acidic cleaners can discolor your sink. Warm water and gentle soap is usually all it takes.

Copper Sinks: The Essential Starter Guide: Reactive
When all is said and done choosing the right sink for you is up to you, however, we hope, that in considering copper sinks for your next kitchen design or bathroom remodel that we’ve provided you with the necessary information to decide if a copper sink is right for your home and family! They’re stunning and unique pieces with equally unique properties that make them ideal in any kitchen! Kitchen Design Trends & Resolutions for 2016

Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: FeaturedB

Kitchen Design Trends & Resolutions for 2016!

Happy New Year everyone! Now that 2016 is in full swing I’m sure that everyone is making some changes in their lives for the better. Here are some Kitchen Design Resolutions to start the year off right and make your space even more functional and beautiful – because let’s face it a cluttered kitchen is so last year. Most trends and resolutions are sticking around from 2015 it seems, but there are also some new and fresh ideas that 2016 is bringing to the kitchen table in kitchen design! We’ll get started off with our top 3 kitchen design resolutions so you can get your space in order and prepare to transform your kitchen into the heart of your home.

Kitchen Design Resolutions

Our kitchen design resolutions are simple tasks to get your kitchen organized, decluttered, and ready to be transformed!

1. Get organized.

The pantry is all over the place, small appliances out in the open to run a muck, you’re digging through the silverware to find the whisk that you may or may not have – but you swear you do. Organizing your kitchen and surrounding spaces isn’t as overwhelming as it seems. In fact, the pantry itself can be done as you go grocery shopping. Utensil organizers and pantry hacks are your best friends in the kitchen! Magazine racks or old soda boxes are great for storing canned goods; and shoe caddies are useful for storing wine! Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Pantry Organization

 2. Declutter

Organizing and decluttering might seem like the same thing to some people, but in reality they’re two steps on the road to kitchen design bliss – think of them as two sides to the same coin. While organizing might mean that you have your stuff together decluttering is getting rid of and hiding away that which you don’t want to be seen. Building a pull out shelf for small appliances or your trash bin is a fantastic way to begin to declutter your counter space. Kit Our favorite organizational products that are the 11 Minutes or Less Kitchen Organization tools. Like their name says, they can be installed in 11 minutes or less and they have so many different products for different uses!

3. Out with the Old and In with the New

Resolve to update your space – however you want. Whether your aim is to sell your home in the coming year or if you just want to make the space more your own. Go ahead and plan to update the flooring, backsplash, cabinets, or the entire kitchen if you want to!

Black & White

Black and White – whether together or on their own – are classic colors. If you’re thinking of using one of these in your kitchen consider White for a more classic approach, or black for a more daring and bold look! Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Black & White

Color Pop – Blue

Pale blues have been on the rise in many traditional kitchen color schemes – pairing it with white shaker cabinets for a chic cottage feel. Other kitchens have also gone for the color pop look – using a basic neutral color and adding an accent wall or accent kitchen cabinets in a bright, fun color. Natural

Going for the natural color of wood is also a popular trend that we’re beginning to see more of. Especially unfinished wood. Contrasting unfinished cabinets in light and dark woods are becoming very popular. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Wood

2. Materials

Wood

Speaking of wood. Reclaimed wood is an integral part of the modern rustic trend we were seeing last year. It brings age and texture to your space, and can be used to make everything from shelves, to tables, to backsplashes! Other woods are also popular because of the popularity of spaces that feel more natural and take on those natural characteristics. Wood Pallet Shelves DIY

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel appliances are sleek, modern, they go well in almost any space, and they’re easy to clean. Simple stainless steel hardware on wood cabinets updates the space to create a more contemporary finished look while also providing a contrasting element to the look.

Ledge Stone

Ledge stone comes in small single lay tiles and in large format tiles. It can be used over an entire space, as a backsplash, or other accent in you kitchen design. It’s popular for it’s general ease of installation and the impact that it brings to a space. Ledgestone_Backsplash

3. Mix & Match

Everything is moving more and more towards the contemporary styles as far as trends are concerned – but that doesn’t meant that the traditional or the classic have completely fizzled out. People more and more are mixing and matching colors, and textures, and finished to bring a uniqueness to their kitchen designs. Breaking up space with different colored countertops or different materials, pairing modern fixtures with a rustic style can all be used to mix and match a space just for you. Amish Kitchen Cabinets Misconceptions

Many people think that Amish Kitchen Cabinets are the top of the line in cabinet construction. There are many misconceptions related to Amish Kitchen Cabinets that we would like to clarify, in an attempt to assist in your renovation and search for the best kitchen cabinets for you and your home. These misconceptions relate in no way to our feelings about the Amish or their businesses, nor do they apply to every single Amish Kitchen Cabinet business that you will find. However, these misconceptions have been found in a large percentage of Companies selling Amish Kitchen Cabinets. When you are in the market for new kitchen cabinets and are looking for a product that that fits with you and your values, these are things to keep in mind and are questions you can ask. We will also be comparing Amish Kitchen Cabinets to Wellborn Kitchen Cabinets in many instances, which is not an Amish made or owned company. This company offers what most people are looking for when they think Amish Kitchen Cabinets are the best choice for them.

The Term “Amish Kitchen Cabinets” is a Marketing Strategy.

Most people are under the impression that if they see cabinets or furniture marked ‘Amish Made’, that it means the quality is top of the line and that it is 100% handcrafted in the USA. This is definitely a misconception. In many cases, the cabinetry is actually less hand crafted than other kitchen cabinet lines that don’t even particularly focus on that aspect. Many ‘Amish Kitchen Cabinets’ are not even 100% made in the USA. They import drawers and doors from China and outsource other pieces as well. In some cases they are only ‘Assembled by the Amish’. Amish Assembly would have very little positive effect on the quality of a kitchen cabinet, and can actually negatively effect the quality depending on the outsourced products that are being used. If you are dead set on purchasing Amish Kitchen Cabinets, do your due diligence in making sure that your cabinets are ACTUALLY being hand made in the USA. In other cases, the company may only be ‘Amish Owned’ and the cabinets are not even “Amish Made”. This means you are paying a premium for a cabinet that is no better than any other. You’re paying for a tag line. Handcrafted Kitchen Cabinets - Amish Kitchen Cabinets Builders Surplus

Wellborn Cabinets are Hand Crafted In The Truest Sense.

Wellborn Cabinets is a high-quality kitchen cabinet line that we offer in our store. Wellborn cabinets is a family owned and operated business and it’s cabinets are 100% hand crafted in the USA. They literally start with a tree and turn it into your kitchen cabinets, start to finish, in their facility. Every piece of the cabinetry is hand made and the doors are hand-sanded for the perfect finish. When we think of “hand crafted cabinets”, Wellborn is the truest example of this. Make sure that you buy your ‘Amish kitchen cabinets’ or ‘Amish-Made Furniture’ the same way that you would any other piece, on its own merits. Don’t get caught up in the quaintness or nostalgia of the marketing approach. Evaluate the criteria that makes a kitchen cabinet a quality piece of craftsmanship, such as solid wood, dovetail drawers, sanding techniques, finish, and overall construction.   Shop Products at Builders Surplus

Are Amish Woodworking Shops a Step Above The Rest?

This is another big misconception. Amish woodworking shops are virtually the same as most any other woodworking shop in the USA, except they are not attached to the electrical grid, which is forbidden by their culture. Instead of typical electricity, they will usually have 1-2 huge diesel engines running at full speed to supply the power that they need for their shop.  Many assume that their “old school” tools make for a better end result, as opposed to traditional electric tools. This is another misconception. The only real difference in tools is that they use Hydraulic energy instead of electric. Other than that, the approach to furniture or cabinet making is largely the same as any other wood working or cabinet building shop in the United States. Child-Labor With Amish Kitchen Cabinets Builders Surplus However, one major difference in some Amish shops is the fact that children could be doing the crafting. The Amish are not subject to the same child labor laws that other companies are, so they are able to have children under the age of 18 working in their shops, and are not required to have them on payroll or offer insurance like all other businesses are required to do. This means that young children and teens are doing dangerous jobs, like working with saws and dangerous tools. While allowing children to work on family farms is more widely known and slightly less frowned upon, having them work in manufacturing is a totally different ball game. To some, this is an ethical issue. To others, it may not be an issue at all. This information is only here to help you make the best decision for you and your household. Read more about child labor violations here.

Are Amish Kitchen Cabinets 100% Green and Eco-Friendly?

Most of the time, no. This is another misconception. In the attempt to not be tied in to the electrical grid, generators with diesel fuel are being run around the clock in manufacturing shops. This is most definitely not eco-friendly. Because they do not have to comply with OSHA regulations, they do not have to follow the other mandatory “green” regulations that other companies do, or strive for. Some Amish companies pride themselves on being green or eco-friendly, so again, we are not saying that this applies to all Amish Manufacturers, but this is something to dig deeper into if you’re concerned about conserving energy.   Shop Products at Builders Surplus   Another issue is the fact that they are not required to help reduce tree deforestation. Wellborn Cabinets, for example, plants a tree for ever tree they cut down. They are also a Certified Green Manufacturer. The benefit of this type of certification is that those who are concerned about this can easily have piece of mind knowing what a company does or doesn’t do to help the environment. Wellborn also takes the sawdust that their shops produce and turn it into energy, burning it cleanly to reduce their carbon footprint. If Green & Eco-Friendly manufacturing is what you’re looking for in new kitchen cabinets, then make sure you’re asking the questions that will lead you to the truth. Eco-friendly Kitchen Cabinets Amish Kitchen Cabinets Builders Surplus When searching for new kitchen cabinets, remember that this is an investment. If you pay too much, you’re loosing money in the long run. If you don’t pay enough or you settle for sub-par quality, you will be unhappy, or will have to purchase more before you should have to. This is why it’s very important to make sure that if you’re interested in Amish Kitchen Cabinets, you are not just paying for a name or a tag line. It’s also important to make sure that if you are truly in search of hand crafted, 100% made in the USA kitchen cabinets, that is what you get. If ethical manufacturing is important to you, get the piece of mind that what you’re buying is 100% green and eco-friendly.  Knowing these common misconceptions & the right questions to ask will help you in your search for the perfect kitchen cabinets. Bathroom Style: 7 Styles For Your Next Remodel

Bathroom Style: 7 Styles For Your Next Remodel
We all know by now that a bathroom renovation is one of the first projects that new home owners dive into and that resellers know will give them a better return on investment. So, no matter the reason why you want to remodel your bathroom it’s a good idea to consider the bathroom style, whether it’s just to appeal to you or to potential home buyers.
The first thing you should know is that there are 7 main Bathroom Styles each with their own sub-styles. Every style has it’s flairs and it’s potential fallbacks, and not all of them will appeal to everyone. If you’re remodeling your bathroom for yourself then there’s not much to worry about. However, if you are designing to resell your home then you might want to be more cautious with picking a style that suits your taste instead of what might be trending or what might be timeless. With that, it’s also important to know that what’s trending now might not be in six months.

The Styles:

Traditional Bathroom Style

Traditional bathroom styles are the safe way to go if you’re remodeling to resell, it’s not too out there and it’s easy to add ones own touch. This can also be called the classic bathroom style. This style also tends to overlap in other categories as many of the designs are timeless rather than trendy. The style of traditional bathrooms comes from the 20th century crafts movement, historical, and mission style trends. Other traditional sub-styles that you will typically find are Farmhouse, Craftsman, and Mid-century trends. Farmhouse styles tend to lend themselves towards a more rustic style. Mid-century style bathrooms have a more modern appeal to them, it’s a very toned down but upscaled scandinavian look; and Craftsman bathrooms have an eclectic playfulness without being overwhelming bizzare. Choosing a traditional bathroom can be a pretty daunting task as a lot of it’s sub-styles encompass other trends.
Bathroom Style - Traditional

Rustic Bathroom Style

Rustic style anything is popular right now. This style might also tie in with country, industrial, and shabby-chic styles. While this style of bathroom decor is trending it might be easier to sell because of it’s popularity. Rustic design can be pinned by it’s use of reclaimed wood, textured surfaces and neutral / natural tones. It’s kind of like bringing that old barn you used to play in on your grandparents farm into your home. The use of industrial rustic will give the bathroom a more modern look using more metals and concrete.

You can check out a previous blog we wrote all about this years rustic trend, here.

Modern Bathroom Style

Modern or Contemporary bathrooms are becoming the timeless style of this century. Some other styles that are associated with this movement are industrial –  which has sleek and polished metals and glass – and a lesser known design style called Scandinavian. Scandinavian bathrooms are categorized by it’s use of crisp, clean, angular lines, geometrical shapes and curves, neutral tones and spacial function.

A Modern Scandinavian bathroom style is categorized by it’s use of geometric shapes and lines.

Transitional Bathroom Style

Transitional bathrooms are another safe bet when reselling your home because they’re a fantastic compromise between the classic and modern styles. Bathrooms like these are modern takes on timeless trends, so there isn’t much to say other than it’s a great way to go. It’s all about balance.
Bathroom Style - Transitional

Romantic Bathroom Style

This is the bathroom style that makes you feel like a greek goddess taking a dip in a wide tub surrounded by marble accents, or a european princess relaxing in her clawfoot tub after the ball. Romantic baths are high in beauty and texture. Brocade or graphic wallpaper with complex patterns are popular, as are freestanding clawfoot tubs. Victorian style trends also fall under the romantic category because they use similar elements, although you’ll probably want to opt for some antique wood furniture pieces to complete the room. Bathrooms like these are the epitome of candlelight relaxation.

Eclectic Bathroom Style

Eclectic bathrooms are my personal favorite because I love expressing myself and I also love seeing someone reflected in their space. Eclectic baths are definitely better suited for the remodeler that is doing it all for themselves. They’re playful bathrooms that throw whatever appeals to you in the mix to come out a stylish space that reflects you. So go wild, mix and match styles, an eclectic bathroom is your playground to do with what you will. At this point you’re only restriction is going to be your budget – and maybe that has a bit of wiggle room as well.

As you can see Eclectic styles are so varied that there are some that are simple and quirky, then there are others that just go over the top! I think it’s a beautiful thing to see someones personality come out in a space!

Regional Bathroom Style

Have you ever been inspired by another country or scene that you were just awestruck and wouldn’t mind living there? Sure you have, everyone always wishes that they were someplace else. Regional bathrooms are your home away (but still inside) your home. You’ll find plenty of examples of Tuscan, Italian inspiration, Moroccan tile, Asian, or beach themed escapes. There are so many different regional inspirations you’ll just need to choose your favorite. This is probably another style that is better suited for someone who just wants to make the space their own. However, styling a bathroom to reflect the local region might be a good selling point, it really depends on where you are.

The Top 5 Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes Homeowners Make

Your home is the one of the largest investments you can make, yet people are increasingly choosing to upgrade their existing home instead of purchasing brand new houses. Whether you are choosing to remodel or build from scratch, your kitchen will be the highlight of your home and a place where you and your family spend a great deal of time. It’s important that it not only looks great but adds value and enhances your quality of life. Some say that kitchens are the heart of any home but they can easily become useless if they aren’t functional and designed to last a long time. Learn about the biggest kitchen remodeling mistakes & how to avoid these.

Consider these 5 Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes That Homeowners Make

IGNORING THE FLOW OF YOUR HOME:

kitchen cupboard with no doors

This is typically seen in homes with small kitchens that have limited storage space. Many homeowners will compromise storage options to create more space but that’s not necessary if you plan out your cabinet space. Functional cabinet space will make cooking easier and reduces the clutter. Rather than omitting shelf space, many homeowners are opting to enhance the areas they have to work with. Chelsea Wynn, the Public Relations and Social Media Expert for Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. suggests removing the cabinet doors from wall cabinets to make kitchens feel larger and more open. This approach increases functionality and creates a place to store dishes or appliances to neatly sit.

BAD LIGHTING:

French Doors Provide Lighting for Kitchen Remodel

Lighting is often the most overlooked thing in the kitchen. It may not seem important right now but wait until you are trying to peel a potato or slice an avocado with minimal lighting. You should choose your lighting in the beginning of your planning stage and according to the style of your new space, make sure it reflects what you really like and not what you are willing to settle for. If your home lacks windows and natural lighting, consider replacing one of your solid exterior doors with a French door like these doors we have available at both our Cincinnati and Louisville area stores. They will instantly brighten the look and feel of your kitchen while making it seem more open and spacious.

COMPROMISING QUALITY TO SAVE MONEY:

kitchen remodeling 4

Go ahead and repeat after me. Cheaper is not better. It’s just the truth. Sacrificing function to include nicer materials will do nothing but disappoint you in the end. Make sure you consider the proportions of your kitchen areas and measure everything. In fact, measure TWICE.  Avoid the trends you think look hip today. Your kitchen is much more than a fashion statement and today’s trends will more than likely be outdated fifteen years from now. Depending upon who you ask, your kitchen is easily the most important room in the house. You are opening and closing your cabinets all the time. Hardwood cabinets with a sturdy finish and strong hardware are imperative to carry your family the extra mile.

CUTTING CORNERS TO SAVE TIME:

Taking measurements during kitchen remodel

It’s important to your budget and your sanity that you get the job done right the first time. It might seem like it won’t be a big deal to live with a small error or mistake but in reality it can have a major impact on how you utilize and enjoy your kitchen in the future. Don’t compromise longevity just to trim time. Make sure your house plans allow adequate space for your refrigerator and dishwasher. This is a big kitchen remodeling mistake to avoid. These are necessities and if they aren’t functional on a daily basis, you will definitely feel it. Be sure to go over the measurements of all of your cabinets and appliances. Remember to allow room for the drawers and cabinet doors to open.

STARTING YOUR PROJECT BEFORE MAKING FINAL DECISIONS:

Kitchen In Need of Remodeling

Finally, make sure you know what you want before you begin your project. This probably sounds like common sense but you would be surprised how many people change their mind in the middle of everything. Some folks think that it’s easy to switch things up at a moment’s notice. Others think it’s no big deal to start a project before making their final decisions because they prefer to take it one step at a time. This is not good practice and can result in costly changes if certain aspects of the project don’t end up meeting your expectations. In fact, it’s best to make a formal checklist that will structure the period of time when you are in project mode.
