Our 5 Favorite Design Trends For 2019!

Beginning a new year always brings renewed excitement for those of us fortunate to work in home retail & remodeling. It’s especially exciting to meet homeowners who will begin planning or preparing to tackle a long-anticipated remodeling project. With an eye on 2019 design trends, we found our Top 5 favorites & hope they are some of your favorites too! Here goes:

1. Darker Kitchen Cabinetry

Top Interior Design Trends for 2019

Navy Blue or Black Kitchen Cabinets paired with brass hardware & faucet

Searches for black and navy blue kitchens are up 93% in past six months, with matt and powdery finishes. One of the strongest style trends that have come through in modern kitchen design is the color blue, and this can be traced from classic Shaker-style kitchens right through to chic and minimal modern spaces. Whether it’s on walls, floors, cabinetry or backsplashes, blue has replaced grey as the go-to on-trend color – and it is particularly navy blue kitchens. Wellborn ColorInspire Cabinet finishes is leading the trend! ColorInspire is a program that will allow a customer the ability to choose from thousands of colors in any of the Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams or Valspar color decks for that just right color.

2. Vintage Style Bathrooms

Tod Trends for 2019: Vintage Style Bathroom

The Vintage Style Bathroom has found its way back home and we couldn’t be happier!

Good design lasts forever and more than seventy years later it returns to rekindle an eternal style.  Soft, classic lines fill the entire ensemble with character in a relaxing and magical place where every detail has a reason to be there. With the ever-changing world around us, we still seek to find a calmness from days gone by but with the versatility of our modern storage needs.

3. Brass Faucets And Hardware

Top Interior Design Trends for 2019: Brass Faucet

Brass Faucets & Hardware can add the finishing touch to a kitchen or bath.

Like a beautiful piece of jewelry, Brass faucets & hardware are making a big return to add the finishing touch to your kitchen or bath. Adding just a bit of shine or extra bunch to marble or concrete bathroom elements. Brass also makes a beautiful statement with this year’s popular darker kitchen cabinets like black or navy blue finishes.

4. Patterned Tile

Top Tile Trends for 2019: Patterned Tile

This year there is a  renewed focus on artisan inspired patterned tile creating a focal wall.

Gone are the days of tile floors mixing into the background of a room. In 2019, we are seeing the reemergence of patterned tile everywhere! Perhaps my favorite trend this year because we are seeing so many new tile colors & shapes! Patterned tile allows you to create a space that shows off a bit of personality. They look especially great when paired with neutrals. Featured here is Havana Jazz by Roca.

5. Green Sustainable Flooring

Cork Flooring Trends 2019

A Move to Green Flooring: Cork, Bamboo, Reclaimed Wood or Engineered Wood.

Natural, recycled and materials obtained from sustainable sources will be big in 2019 and beyond.  Options like cork, bamboo, reclaimed wood, and engineered wood are proving to be very popular choices. Cork, for instance, is non-toxic and is taken from the bark of the cork oak tree. It is non-harmful for the tree and the bark can be re-harvested around every 9 years- up to 15 times in its lifetime! Special care is taken to strip the outer bark without damaging the inner layer. Reclaimed wood or Salvaged wood can provide new life from old buildings. It may take more effort to source but with a quick search, you may be surprised to find several companies specializing in recycled wood products.

Hopefully, my Top 5 Design Trends for 2019 will be favorites of yours too! These are only a few of the MANY awesome trends for the year. Share with us some of your personal favorites!

2018 Remodeling Trends To Watch For

With a new year comes new 2018 remodeling trends. Each year we come up with a list of styles to predict, observe, love or hate. Here is what we've found to be at the top of the list for 2018! Let us know what you think in the comments!

1. Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are raining king of countertops. Granite has slowly been losing market share and is not longer in first place on our list of 2018 remodeling trends. Why? Well, quartz countertops offer very little downside. The opening price point of $58/sf FULLY INSTALLED (at Builders Surplus) is comparable to custom granite.

The variety of colors is so much greater than you could get in granite, especially solid white. It's stain proof, scratch resistant and heat resistant. Some brands are also completely antibacterial. Huge benefits, no negatives, at least in my book. We LOVE Quartz Countertops!

2. Gold and Brass fixtures

Whether you call it gold, or you call it brass, the fact remains: it’s a 2018 remodeling trend. The contrast of gold against colors like black, grey and navy can provide a stunning statement. You can even mix it up and mix metals, like black finishes! Trust me, you won’t regret it.

3. Effective Storage Solutions

Kitchens are one room that become cluttered and dirty fairly easily. In the last few years we’ve seen an increase in cool storage ideas, but we believe that 2018 is going to be the year that the market really embraces them. There are so many amazing ways to organize your kitchen to free up space, make it more functional, and fit more in your cabinets in a way that you weren’t able to do before! Check out all of our ’11 Minutes or Less’ products and see how you can organize your space!

4. Large format tile

One of my favorite 2018 remodeling trends is large format tile. Large format tile is a tile larger than 15″ on any side. This included wood look tile, which has become a huge trend in the last year. Large format time can make a space look bigger and it can be less expensive and time consuming to install that smaller pieces. When you use one style throughout a room, it can add a nice level of uniformity to the space.

5. Concrete Tile Styles

This year, I predict we’ll see more urban and industrial style spaces using tile that imitates concrete! Concrete can be hard to install if you don’t have it already exposed, so this is the perfect alternative! It gives you an upscale, yet rough around the edges look. Greys go with just about anything, so you can’t go wrong!

6. Cabinet Colors: White stays, grey grows, taupe is trending, color is coming!

White kitchen cabinets have been the top cabinet color for several years. It’s not going out completely. White cabinets can do a few things. They make a space look bigger, and give a feel of cleanliness to a sometimes cluttered space. It’s a timeless look that probably won’t EVER go out of style. But it is taking a backseat to some of the other hot colors of the moment.

Grey has been growing in popularity for the last 2 years, and we’ll continue to see that with more dove grey colors, a lighter and creamier grey than we’ve seen a lot in the past. Taupe cabinets are one of my favorite trends of 2018!

Stained wood cabinets have not been on trend in quite a few years, but this gives that natural wood feel, while still being a painted cabinet. You’ll see light taupe as shown below, but there are darker wood stains that are mixed with taupe that bring an elegance back to stained wood that we haven’t seen for a while.

Color is coming, people! Bold is no longer just for the brave. Well, you probably need to have a slightly daring style, but it’s becoming more commonplace to see brightly or boldly colored cabinets. Blues, such as navy, robins egg blue, and cerulean are all colors I’m loving on cabinets at the moment!

7. Dark Flooring

Dark flooring is making a come back in 2018! The rich dark stains contrasted against walls, window frames and furniture give a crisp and elegant style to any room. It feels upscale and sophisticated. While lighter floors still look great, we expect to sell a lot of dark wood this year!

8. Patterned Tile

Patterned tile is one of my favorite 2018 remodeling trends. I love is so much that I’m about to do my master bathroom floor in the tile top right :)! It’s fun, funky, and elegant all at the same time. It adds visual interest, movement and true style! This can go on floors, backsplashes, fireplaces or accent walls! It’s a great way to add pizzaz to any space!

9. Black framed windows

Black framed windows were very common decades ago, but they’re starting to make a comeback, and look darn good while doing it! This gives a more modern vide but can be used on any style home to give an updated feel. Love them!

10. Bold Interior Doors

Interior doors are no longer the boring, standard, 6 panel white doors you’re used to seeing. They’re colorful, they have unique patterns, designs, and materials used on them. Barn doors are used on any doorway and we’re absolutely loving it! It takes a boring necessity and turns it into a focal point in your home.

The Best & Worst of 2017 Interior Design

Our Favorite Interior Design Trends:

Mini Subway Tile:

Mini subway tile has seen a huge boom in 2017 interior design. The 2x4 tile (typically 3x6 or 4x12) comes in a mesh back tile format, so they go up so much quicker, as they're foot by foot sheets. This has made installing them a breeze, and homeowners love the dramatic look they bring!

As 2017 comes to a close, let’s evaluate which interior design trends were hero’s and which were zero’s.

Geometric Inspired Decor:

Geometric patterns can be found all over 2017 interior design. From wallpaper patterns, to cabinet hardware, faucets and more, this is the go-to pattern of the moment.

Brass Fixtures:

Brass is not the outdated finish it once was! It’s making a comeback and I for one love it. Check the bathroom above to see how classy gold can be when done the right way. Pair it with neutrals or bold colors for a modern or eclectic look.

Patterned Tile:

Patterned tile was one of my favorite interior design trends of 2017. Some are subtle, like the one shown above, and some are much more bold. You can use them on a backsplash, a bathroom floor, in a laundry room, or anywhere that you want to make a statement! This trend is here to stay for a while.

Bold Colors:

This look is refreshing as solid white has been in style for quite some time it feels like. Bold colored cabinets like this are in at the moment and I love it! Whatever color makes your heart happy, you can splash throughout your home and know that you’re right on track with the current styles! Cabinet companies like Wellborn are making it easier than ever with their ColorInspire collection. The sky is the limit!

Natural Stone:

Natural stone in your home gives it a cozy, old world feel. You can use large stone as shown above, ledge stone panels, or brick tile to achieve this look. Use it on your fireplace, an accent wall, home exterior, or on columns to really warm your space up.

Ceilings that POP:

Ceiling detail was IN for 2017! Whether it’s unique colors, large beams, or intricate tile work as shown above, 2017 homes had us looking up more than ever before! Get creative and make your house your own!

Interior Design Trends that Are OUT:

Solid White Spaces:

I love white rooms as much as the next girl. They’re classic and clean. However, this trend has been a little played out in the last few years. It’s starting to get very sterile and mundane. Get ready to punch it up in 2018 with white PAIRED with bold colors to break up the space and add some flare.

Copper Fixtures:

Copper had a good run. It was the alternative to your standard chrome, brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze. It was used as decorative accents, kitchen sinks and more. But it seems that it’s day may be over. Will brass be taking it’s place? It sure seems that way! What do you think of 2017’s interior design trends, for better or worse? What do you hope to see in 2018? Let us know in the comments below!

11 Remodeling Trends That Stand The Test Of Time

The term “remodeling trends” gives people the impression that these are things that will go out of style. That is just not the case! Some remodeling trends are built to last and those are the kind you should be looking for. As a company who focuses on helping our customers remodel their kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, windows and doors, we know a thing or two about what comes and goes, and what is here to stay. Here are our top suggestions for your remodel if you’re looking for designs that won’t soon go out of style.

Timeless Remodeling Trends

Quartz Countertops

While granite was the top countertop material in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, quartz has given it a run for it’s money in recent years. This is due to the fact that it is super durable, more scratch, stain and heat resistant than granite. It comes in a wider variety of colors, is anti-bacterial, and never needs to be sealed! Can you say win?

Open Concept

Open concept gained popularity in the last decade, and we have no idea why it took so long to catch on. Open concept spaces feel larger. They allow groups to congregate better and more seamlessly, making entertaining a breeze! When cooking dinner, the wife (or husband!) doesn’t feel cut off from the rest of the family. It is easier to see children playing while you do other things around the house with open sight lines. Open concept is definitely a remodeling trend that’s here to stay.

Integrated appliances

At one time, appliances may have been beautiful works of art. We’re not sure when that was, but they must have been, considering how people liked to put them front and center! One remodeling trend that we love is integrated appliances. They blend right in, giving your kitchen a more cohesive look.

White & Grey

White kitchens have always been timeless, and will continue to be. But another great neutral that has popped on the scene has been grey. We love grey cabinets, countertops, walls, and tile (but not all in the same kitchen). It’s easy to add pops of color to either of these colors so they don’t feel boring or sterile. They also allow you to mix up your accent pieces if you ever get bored!

Wood Look Floors

Hardwood flooring is still one of the most popular flooring choices. We’re not surprised. It’s beautiful. BUT, it’t not always right for every house hold. That’s why we’ve been so excited to see the surge of new technologies and remodeling materials that imitate wood, but have many of the benefits that wood doesn’t have. These include LVT  and LVP (Luxury Vinyl Tile and Plank) or wood look tile. They can be used in basements, bathrooms, or any other space that wood wasn’t typically welcome.

Shaker Style

Shaker style cabinets are one of the most popular door style of cabinetry, and for good reason. It is clean and chic enough for modern or contemporary spaces, cozy enough for traditional or farmhouse spaces, or classic enough for traditional. We offer many shaker styles in many different colors that always elevate the look of any space. Go for a clean white or grey, or choose the unfinished shaker and paint it a bold color! Any choice will be gorgeous.

Subway Tile

Subway tile is one of my favorite tile options. As someone who likes things to be on the bold side, this is somewhat surprising. But, when you think about how many different materials, colors, and finishes there are of subway tile, not to mention sizes, subway tile is anything but standard. Then, add in unique patterns or grout colors and you can truly make it your own. You can never go wrong using subway tile.

Creative Storage

I think we can all agree that clutter is not cute. Cabinets bursting at the seams makes a kitchen feel small, and toys around the living room make you feel like your whole house is dirty. The simple solution is to incorporate creative storage. This is one of my favorite remodeling trends, as it’s more about function than fashion, although it does make your home look better as well. Think built in cabinets in the dining or living room, or the ’11 minutes or less’ kitchen organization products!

Soaker Tubs

Soaker tubs were popular in centuries past, and they are just as popular today. While some styles have changed, the result is the same. A freestanding tub with a lot of space to stretch out and relax. These tubs are more comfortable, more spacious, and definitely nicer to look at. We offer many styles of freestanding soaker tubs at an amazing price!

Crown Moulding

Crown Moulding takes the look of any room to a higher level. It gives a more completed, finished feel. Crown is associated with upscale spaces, but you can add it into any home, in any room. Our crown comes in 16′ pieces, as opposed to the usually 8 or 10′, so you get great bang for your buck!

Bold Front Door

Your front door is like the smile of your home. It’s the first impression. Do you want your first impression to be meek and meager, or bold and beautiful! Our guess is the latter. Doors with side lites are great option for adding more elegance as well as natural light in your home. We have beautiful iron, wood, and fiberglass options for your front door refresh!
