Rustic Kitchen Design: How to Get the Look

Rustic Kitchen Design is a very popular style right now! I love it, as it evokes the feelings that I get in nature, in the country, away from the pressures of “city life”. Those are feelings are of peace, contentment, and natural beauty. Today we’ll help you make choices for your kitchen remodel that will give you the perfect rustic kitchen design. Choosing Cabinets for a Rustic Kitchen Design

Your cabinets are the most important choice in creating your rustic kitchen design. You may think of rustic cabinets as only solid wood tones, but that’s not the case! You can choose white, stained wood, natural wood, or even colored cabinets and still get a rustic look, however, definitly stick with neutrals. Adding a glaze on raised panel cabinets with detail is another great way to get this look. Here are a few examples below of some beautiful rustic kitchen cabinets!

Countertops for a Rustic Kitchen Design

Similar to your kitchen cabinets, neutrals are the best choice for a rustic kitchen design. My top choice would be butcher block, as wood is definitly a popular material for a rustic look. However, that is not your only option. Granite, quartz, or laminate countertops can also be used to achieve this look. Another option is to mix wood countertops with another material. Use it on your island for a nice rustic pop! Creamy whites go well for a rustic or farmhouse look, as well as speckled tans or even darker tones like navy.

Backsplash for a Rustic Kitchen Design

A few of my favorite choices for rustic backsplashes would be:
  • Subway tile – it goes with everything!
  • Ledgestone – This is one of the most rustic looks you can find
  • Tan mosaic or large format tile
  • Wood Look Tile – A very rustic look, although not very common
  • Brick Tile – White or natural red
All of these backsplash options will give your a beautiful rustic kitchen design!

Hardware for a Rustic Kitchen Design

There is a wide variety of hardware options for your rustic kitchen. One of my favorite options is a rusty toned cabinet hardware, it brings a refreshing authenticity to the design. Brushed nickel, brass, and oil rubbed bronze are also very solid choices for cabinet hardware. I also think that cup pulls or vintage style hardware is a great way to go, but get creative with it! It really is a person choice, but it will also help to set off your design. See the photos in the blog for examples we love! Kitchen Cabinets-Shop-Ad

Lighting for a Rustic Kitchen Design

Lighting is a fantastic way to set off your design. Pendant lighting is a very popular choice, with Edison bulbs, dome pendants, and pendants with a cage style. Can lights are also a great choice if you don’t feel like your design needs anything else to be perfect! Rustic Kitchen Lighting Louisville Newport Cincinnati

Flooring for a Rustic Kitchen Design

Flooring for a rustic kitchen design can be based on your personal preference, but solid hardwood, or a wood look flooring such as LVT, laminate or Wood Look Tile will be the best choice. You can also win with a neutral or stone look tile. Choose something with a hand-scraped or distressed finish to set off the look!

Custom Countertops: Butcher Block and Concrete

Today, we’re going to talk about a couple of pretty unique and insanely intriguing custom countertops. It’s because of their out-of-the-box design that we love them so much, and I’m pretty sure you’ll come to adore them, too. In this post, I’ll lay it all on the countertop and give you reasons why these particular styles have captured the interest of homeowners across the nation and why they continue to be a hot, trendy style in kitchen and bathroom design. As countertop experts in Louisville, Newport, and Cincinnati, we are here to share our expertise on these two unique countertop options.

Custom Countertops: Butcher Block

There’s no denying it – they’re edgy. I mean, they’re not called custom countertops for nothing. Unlike the typical granite or marble, these countertops have a more creative, quirky feel to them. The butcher block is a natural at maintaining the traditional country home or cottage style kitchen setting, and because of its natural tendencies, it persistently looks fresh, giving the impression that it’s just been cleaned. There’s versatility in them, too! Since it’s made of wood, you can apply any color of stain and compliment the other features in your kitchen or bath to tie everything together. If the color doesn’t grow on you after a period of time or you simply want to switch it up a little bit, there’s a cost-effective way to make that change. Simple, too. Even with a sealed finish, it doesn’t take too much elbow grease to sand down and refinish the butcher block countertop. Then, when you’re done, apply that new color of choice. See, change doesn’t always have to be difficult.

Another thing, I bet you’ve probably already guessed it, but you’ll never need a cutting board again. Depending upon the finish applied to it, you can slice-and-dice all you want on these bad boys with no worry about knife trails. It’s truly a chef’s dream. The longevity of this style is one of its greatest appeals, though. With a simple cleaning solution (water and vinegar), you’ll keep that same shine and finish decades, yes, decades later. Now, if that doesn’t pique your interest, then take a look at the pictures. Nice, right? See what I mean about the different finishes and colors of stain. Listen it’s your house, your kitchen – make it your own with a sleek, unique style like this one! At Builders Surplus, we’re happy to provide you with such a style. Butcher block is a special order product, so please contact one of our designers to discuss your butcher block countertop options.

Custom Countertops: Concrete

Concrete countertops provide a whole realm of possibility. It’s concrete, so it obviously has to be poured. This means you can mold the concrete in any fashion to make it your own. There’s an abundance of really cool, off-the-wall designs that can make a kitchen or bath truly one of a kind. You can mold the edges how you want to. Don’t like hard-cut, 90° angles?  Well, smooth it out, and give your custom countertop the kind of curvature you want! I really appreciate this feature because, if you’re like me, you’ve turned a corner too sharp and been subject to that merciless, pain of the corner jab. But, you’re probably not like me and know your way around a kitchen.

With that said, these custom countertops are incredibly durable and very near impenetrable to common damages including chipping, scratching, and cracking.  The finish protects it from pesky stains, too. Consider it an instant repellant to spaghetti sauce, wine, or grease. The maintenance on these slabs are almost too easy. Warm, soapy water usually does the trick, but if you want to get really crazy, you can use pH cleaner, as well. Either way, this style is designed for simplicity.

While you may think that if you can pour quick dry concrete, you can DIY concrete countertops. Well, that’s probably not the case. While they may seem like an easy DIY project, they are far more complicated to install than you might think. The main concern is getting every single bubble out of the concrete. If you don’t, you risk cracks, which make this stunner more of a bummer. Our suggestion, use a professional. Use reputable sites like Thumbtack or Home Advisor to find reputable installers. You can see reviews from past customers and they have already been vetted by the company.

Rustic Design + Industrial Design: Marrying Design Styles

Today, we’ll be discussing marrying design styles, rustic design and industrial design. You could be someone who loves both styles and can’t decide between them. You could be married to someone who loves rustic, when you love industrial, and you’re searching for a compromise. No matter the reason, meshing these styles together is easy to do, and we’ll show you how!

What is Rustic Design Style?

Rustic Design Style, Rustic Decor
Rustic Design Style Defined: Rustic design style brings you close to nature.  Reminiscent of pioneers in the early days, they would most likely find it humorous how much work people put into getting the look that was their only option. I’m sure they could only dream of the modern luxuries we have today, but rustic style doesn’t have to be absent of luxury. It is one of my favorite design styles, boasting organic shapes, natural materials, lots of wood, and accents that have been around for decades, if not centuries. Rustic style is popular in areas all over the country, not just in the backwoods of Kentucky.

Why people love it:  Rustic design evokes a feeling of nostalgia. It feels simple and pure. It is great for the environment because you can repurpose so many pieces. DIYers can do big things with the rustic design style which can make it extremely budget friendly. Rustic style gives me the same feeling as a weekend spent camping. It provides a sense of peace and calm, getting you away from the hustle and bustle of the city, even if you’re right in the city center.

Who tends to like the rustic design vibe: If you love to work with your hands. If you love camping under the stars. If you love to repurpose and up cycle. If you love a wood burning fireplace and the smell of fresh cut hickory, rustic style could be for you.

What is Industrial Style?

industrial style, industrial decor, industrial design
What it industrial design style: Industrial style was not so much a design style, but a way that buildings looked in real life. This is the style that was built from blue collar workers in America. And that might be why it’s become so loved. It’s raw. It’s real. It is simple, stripped down, and bold. While some find it cold, many feel warmth in the metals and woods that make this style what it is. You can find this style all over, from small studios to million dollar mansions.

The industrial design appeal: Industrial design style celebrates affordable materials, eliminating the fluff. It is bare and raw. It focuses more on the essentials that the frills. While this style can be simple and downplayed, you can also add touches of elegance and luxury that elevate the aesthetic.

Who is drawn to Industrial design style: You are not a big box shopper. Ikea is NOT your friend. You love thrifting, finding unique items to use in a new or unexpected way. You don’t need a lot of bright colors to find a space warm and cozy. You love walking through historic districts and possibly abandoned buildings.

The Marriage: Rustic Industrial Style

Rustic Industrial Style, Rustic Design, Industrial Design
Now for the finale! How to marry rustic style and industrial style. The two styles have a lot in common. They are both raw in their own way, stripped down to bare materials. They focus on woods and metals. One is more country, while the other has more of a city feel, but the combination is so beautiful, perfect for a harmonious home. This is one of my favorite styles, as there is no shelf-life. This is not a trendy look, its a classic look, with pieces that have already stood the test of time.
Rustic Industrial Style Kitchen
Using Natural Stone, Natural Wood Cabinets, Paired with Stainless Steel Lighting, Appliances, and polished concrete countertops makes this a perfect marriage of rustic design and industrial design styles.

Joanna Gains Kitchen: Rustic Industrial Style
Joanna Gains, HGTV’s latest design star, has a knack for combining rustic and industrial style. Her kitchen is the perfect example. Concrete countertops with a matte finish, natural wood floors, farm sink, floating rustic shelves, wood beams, industrial lighting and stainless steel appliances paired with oil rubbed bronze hardware.

How to get the look:

  • Focus on old pieces, the more distressed, the better.
  • White, Grey or Natural Wood Cabinet Doors
  • Find pieces that mix wood and metal together.
  • Concrete, stainless steel or butcher block countertops
  • Up cycled pieces, like wire basket light fixtures
  • Oil Rubbed bronze Accents
  • Stainless Steel Appliances and Fixtures
  • Add sliding barn doors (Available at both Builders Surplus Locations)
  • Use as much exposed brick as possible (Ask about our brick tile)
  • Add floating shelves or open shelves with industrial piping
  • Use old and rusted accents. The antique store is your friend!
