How To Use Ledge Stone In Any Space

Ledge stone is an incredible building material. Ledge stone is an all natural stacked stone used for siding, veneer and cladding, among many other things in home improvement. It is used in homes as well as businesses for both exterior and interior applications. The thin veneer is cut from real, all natural stone. Typical big box stores only offer 1 color of this amazing product, but we carry 8 different colors at all times, and can easily order 26 more that can be picked up in about 2 weeks. Below we’ve put together a compilation of ways that ledge stone can be used in your home to really make your space unique!

1. Ledge Stone Fireplace

Ledge stone can be used as a fireplace surround or above the fireplace to make a striking statement. It can look modern, craftsman, or rustic depending on the color you choose and the surrounding accents and building materials.

2. Ledge Stone Column

Columns can be tricky. In some instances, they can look great with crown molding alone, but other times, you just want to cover them up to make a bolder statement. Reclaimed wood and brick are two options you could use, but ledge stone is another great way to go! You can easily coordinate it with any decor or color palette.

3. Ledge Stone Accent Wall

A ledge stone accent wall can look quite dramatic, especially in an area with high ceilings. Behind a staircase is one great option, but there really is no ‘bad’ place for ledge stone.

4. Ledge Stone Grill Cover

This is one idea that I haven’t seen before and it’s most likely one I’ll be doing in my own home. This is an easy way to elevate the look of a basic appliance. This blends in so well with the outdoor elements that it makes it feel as though the grill was born to live on your patio!

5. Ledge Stone Bathroom Shower Walls

The raw look that the ledge stone gives on these bathroom shower walls is breathtaking! While you would opt for a much smoother stone on the shower floor, this texture definitely takes this bathroom design to another level.

6. Ledge Stone Backsplash

Ledge stone backsplash is not only classic, but it’s edgy. It is interesting without being overpowering. There is a color of ledge stone to match any cabinet color, as demonstrated by the ‘California Gold’ color paired with the rustic green Wellborn cabinets below. This craftsman look is spot on!

7. Ledge Stone Island Cover

What a great idea to add an extra textural element to your kitchen. Typically you’ll find solid wood, wainscoting, or bead board around an island, but this is definitely a trend I hope to see more of! It gives a very natural feel to this fresh kitchen.

8. Ledge Stone Exteriors

Ledge stone on a homes exterior is something that most people have seen at least once before. It is durable, beautiful, and can add an element of class to the outside of any building. I love this look and it can be added to one or two surfaces or the entire front of your home.

Subway Tile: Turning Basic Backsplash Bold!

Subway tile is considered a classic in terms of interior design and renovation. This simple tile can come in a variety of materials such as glass subway tile, marble subway tile, ceramic subway tile and porcelain subway tile. No mater the material, the shape is always the same recognizable rectangle. While it is a minimalistic design element, it is by no means boring. However, there are multiple ways to spice up your subway tile to make it an even more interesting feature in your bathroom or kitchen. Below are 8 ways to turn this basic backsplash BOLD!

1. Covered in Color

This arctic ice glass subway tile is a stunner. This color can coordinate with so many different color schemes and design styles, working with masculine elements as well as feminine. There is no limit in terms of color options for subway tile, so let your imagination roam!

2. Dark Grout Delight

This is one of my favorite ways to put your own spin on subway tile. There are actually numerous grout colors to choose from, but most stay with a standard white or cream. My favorite is grey or black when using a white subway tile. It definitely makes a statement and will separate your space from the rest!

3. The next grey-te thing in subway tile

Grey has been on trend in the last year, and the subway tile department is no different! This gorgeous Highland Park Dove Grey Subway Tile has an incredible crackle finish that is completely unique! This backsplash tile is handcrafted, making every piece unique. Grey is a neutral that can easily replace the typical white tile you may have been considering before, and will work very well with many colors and styles!

4. Peculiar Patterns

Instead of going with the same old subway pattern, try mixing it up! There are many ways that you can make it your own, like the windmill pattern shown to the right, or the perpendicular. You can even go vertical and side by side for a simple, clean look.

5. Happy In Herringbone

The herringbone pattern is a favorite of mine, and it works perfectly with any size or color of subway tile. While the installation may be slightly more difficult than the standard, the look you achieve is well worth it.

6. Big Things Come In Small Packages

This Highland Park Dove Grey Brick mesh back tile is one of many in the ‘small subway’ family. It gives you the same feel as the old fashioned subway tile, with a much more modern, updated look.

7. Bigger & Bolder

The new trend in subway tile comes in a larger format. These 4 x 12 pieces featured below can make a space feel larger. I can’t wait to see how many people start to embrace this new size!

8. Handcrafted Creations

Handcrafted goods are not only in style, they are unique and beautiful. The variations in each piece make it something to admire. This antique white subway tile has a wavy finish that makes it look markedly different than its smoother subway counterpart. It’s just another way to turn an old favorite into something a little bit more fun!

Express Yourself with Espresso Cabinets

I love minimalism and subtlety — espresso cabinets are the epitome of just that.  Right now, the trend for kitchen cabinets is white, white, white, and as much as I appreciate white cabinetry, the upkeep can be an absolute nightmare.  For people like me (with three pets) and my friends (with young kids), the maintenance of light cabinets sounds like more work than I am willing to put in with my limited time.

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet

The argument from several designers is that espresso is out, it is overdone, it can be too bold of a statement in a centrally focused room of a home.  However, I think it is all how you style a cabinet.  Take the Ginger Creek American Shaker in mocha.  At first glance, it is just a simple, dark cabinet, but upon closer inspection, I think the tones are rich and warm.  Those qualities coupled with unique design can turn these cabinets from simple to simply elegant, charming, sophisticated, subtle–whatever your style may be.  Here are some design ideas when shopping for espresso cabinets!

Modern Mocha

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
Keeping this palette as neutral as possible, I am letting Cambria’s Praa Sands custom quartz countertop do all the talking for this kitchen design.  There is a lot of movement in the quartz, a beautiful variation of color, and strands of neutral tones complement the espresso cabinets.  Pairing it with the sleek geometry of the Elements Stanton pull and the clean lines of our metallic gray subway tile, this kitchen design is both refined and understated.

Textured Tones

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
If the espresso cabinets in this design were an outfit, the California gold legder panel backsplash would be its jewelry.  There is so much warmth and it is dense with a wild, outdoorsy character.  I wanted that to be the focal point and draw the eye up from the cabinetry to the natural beauty of the Colosseum Quartz countertop.  These countertops are extremely durable, resisting scratches, stains, and heat to remain looking beautiful for years.  Top the cabinets off with the Madison pull in the brushed oil rubbed bronze finish and you end up with a provincial kitchen with a posh twist.

Compromising Coupling

American Shaker Mocha Espresso Cabinet
A lot of the times, couples that are renovating houses cannot decide between their own two styles.  Nine times out of ten, a room’s design is going to eventually be based on one person’s idea.  Since a kitchen is one of the few gathering places in a home, it should be a destination for compromise.  This design idea is all about mixing elements.  From the urbane espresso cabinets to the rustic vibe of our custom built butcher block countertops, we can see there is a lot of masculine hints to the room.  I like the idea of blending that with dainty white penny backsplash and the rounder, softer Madison knob by Elements.  This makes for a beautiful half-and-half composition.

Top 10 Interior Design Trends Spotted At KBIS

Week before last, while visiting the Kitchen & Bath International Showcase in Las Vegas, we spotted 10 new interior design trends worth noting. KBIS, along with the National Kitchen and Bath Association is an inspiring showcase that highlights the latest products, trends and technologies in the remodeling industry. KBIS can be a great way to see what is up in coming in the design world, then taking those products to our customers to enjoy! This is an industry only event that we are happy to share with you by highlighting the top 10 trends that we spotted this year.

Our favorite Interior Design Trends For 2016

1. Arabesque  Patterns

Arabesque tile is one of my absolute favorites. It has such a unique shape that can look modern, french country, vintage, eclectic, or traditional depending on the material, color and finish. This is a real eye catcher in an kitchen or bathroom and will make your space stand out from the rest. We will be expanding our selection of arabesque backsplash tile options shortly, so don’t forget to check back to see the new sections!

2. Colorful and Unique Appliances

Colorful Appliances - Interior Design Trends

Colorful appliances were everywhere at KBIS! The Suzanne Kasler stove to the upper left is a true show piece. This would be the highlight of your kitchen without a doubt. The colors available are bottom left of this paragraph. The retro aqua appliances are amazing and you can really freshen up a drab space quickly with these pieces!

3. Hexagon Patterns

Hexagon is definitely rising to the top in terms of favorites, as the selection available has expanded greatly in the last year. No matter what your color scheme or style, you can most likely find a hexagon to match. The geometric feel usually works best in a contemporary space, in my opinion, but don’t let that stop you – the sky is the limit!

4. Reclaimed Wood

This is my favorite trend, hands down. I absolutely adore the rustic, farmhouse feel, where you mix new pieces with old to give it a nostalgic feel without being outdated. You can use reclaimed wood in a variety of spaces: Light fixtures, open shelves, on your walls, and on a vanity front! the image to the bottom right is an amazing new piece called Stik Wood! It is thinly sliced completely real reclaimed wood, with a sticky back attached to it. It is designed to easily be applied to walls, ceilings, kitchen islands & more! We can’t wait to start carrying Stik Wood Designs in store!

5. Taking On Technology

Technology has grown immensely in the kitchen & bathroom space. The video below shows an island that can raise and lower at the push of a button. The image below it are cabinets that drop down from the bottom, allowing for easy wheelchair accessibility. There are so many cool options that serve a purpose and will impress your friends all at the same time!

6. Playful Patterns

I love this trend, as life is too short to take it too seriously! These playful, fun patterns just bring a smile to my face whenever I see them. Adding something colorful or unique to an otherwise calm space is a great way to add character and charm without going overboard!

7. Natural Stone

Natural stone is on the rise and the reason is simple – it looks great, it’s durable, and you can use it in virtually any space, with any style. There is a color or shape for modern looks, rustic looks, or traditional looks. Use the pebble style stone on your shower floor, the ledge stone on your home’s exterior, the larger stone on your fireplace and you’ve built a cozy home with natural style!

8. Colorful Cabinets

As a lover of color, this is another one of my favorites. The kelley green cabinets to the left are part of Wellborn Cabinets’ Color Inspire collection. This allows you to take any color from Sherwin Williams, and have them transform your cabinets with it! This is a very unique option that allows you to have a truly one of a kind kitchen or bathroom.

9. Cabinet Illumination

Under-cabinet illumination is that little something extra that makes a big difference. Not only for looks, this trend is also for function. It really makes your kitchen look like something you would see in a magazine, with little expense, depending on the style of lighting that you choose. It is easy to have this installed with virtually any cabinet line.

Under Cabinet-Lighting Interior Design Trends

10. Large Format Tile

Large format tile is one of the biggest trends in tile today. Large format tile is considered anything that is 15″ longer on any side, however, some consider 12″ or more to begin to get into the large format category. Below are two really fun options, but large format tile is becoming available in anything you can image, from polished marble, travertine, and wood look tile, to some of the more “out there options” similar to what is shown below. Make sure to have a professional install your large format tile, as it is much different, and much more difficult, than traditional tile.

Kitchen Design Trends & Resolutions for 2016

Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: FeaturedB

Kitchen Design Trends & Resolutions for 2016!

Happy New Year everyone! Now that 2016 is in full swing I’m sure that everyone is making some changes in their lives for the better. Here are some Kitchen Design Resolutions to start the year off right and make your space even more functional and beautiful – because let’s face it a cluttered kitchen is so last year. Most trends and resolutions are sticking around from 2015 it seems, but there are also some new and fresh ideas that 2016 is bringing to the kitchen table in kitchen design! We’ll get started off with our top 3 kitchen design resolutions so you can get your space in order and prepare to transform your kitchen into the heart of your home.

Kitchen Design Resolutions

Our kitchen design resolutions are simple tasks to get your kitchen organized, decluttered, and ready to be transformed!

1. Get organized.

The pantry is all over the place, small appliances out in the open to run a muck, you’re digging through the silverware to find the whisk that you may or may not have – but you swear you do. Organizing your kitchen and surrounding spaces isn’t as overwhelming as it seems. In fact, the pantry itself can be done as you go grocery shopping. Utensil organizers and pantry hacks are your best friends in the kitchen! Magazine racks or old soda boxes are great for storing canned goods; and shoe caddies are useful for storing wine! Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Pantry Organization

 2. Declutter

Organizing and decluttering might seem like the same thing to some people, but in reality they’re two steps on the road to kitchen design bliss – think of them as two sides to the same coin. While organizing might mean that you have your stuff together decluttering is getting rid of and hiding away that which you don’t want to be seen. Building a pull out shelf for small appliances or your trash bin is a fantastic way to begin to declutter your counter space. Kit Our favorite organizational products that are the 11 Minutes or Less Kitchen Organization tools. Like their name says, they can be installed in 11 minutes or less and they have so many different products for different uses!

3. Out with the Old and In with the New

Resolve to update your space – however you want. Whether your aim is to sell your home in the coming year or if you just want to make the space more your own. Go ahead and plan to update the flooring, backsplash, cabinets, or the entire kitchen if you want to!

Kitchen Design Trends

New year new you, and new kitchen! Whether you’re wanting to plan for the future by updating your kitchen to suit your tastes or if you’re wanting to make it more likely to sell these trends are what you should look our for!

1. The Neutral Color Trend

Grey

You might remember back last June when we had a series of blogs all about the grey color trend. Well, that trend isn’t dying out anytime soon. In fact the grey colors have boomed creating an explosion of neutral color trends. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Grey Kitchen

Black & White

Black and White – whether together or on their own – are classic colors. If you’re thinking of using one of these in your kitchen consider White for a more classic approach, or black for a more daring and bold look! Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Black & White

Color Pop – Blue

Pale blues have been on the rise in many traditional kitchen color schemes – pairing it with white shaker cabinets for a chic cottage feel. Other kitchens have also gone for the color pop look – using a basic neutral color and adding an accent wall or accent kitchen cabinets in a bright, fun color. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Blue Color Pop

Natural

Going for the natural color of wood is also a popular trend that we’re beginning to see more of. Especially unfinished wood. Contrasting unfinished cabinets in light and dark woods are becoming very popular. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Wood

2. Materials

Wood

Speaking of wood. Reclaimed wood is an integral part of the modern rustic trend we were seeing last year. It brings age and texture to your space, and can be used to make everything from shelves, to tables, to backsplashes! Other woods are also popular because of the popularity of spaces that feel more natural and take on those natural characteristics. Wood Pallet Shelves DIY

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel appliances are sleek, modern, they go well in almost any space, and they’re easy to clean. Simple stainless steel hardware on wood cabinets updates the space to create a more contemporary finished look while also providing a contrasting element to the look.

Ledge Stone

Ledge stone comes in small single lay tiles and in large format tiles. It can be used over an entire space, as a backsplash, or other accent in you kitchen design. It’s popular for it’s general ease of installation and the impact that it brings to a space. Ledgestone_Backsplash

3. Mix & Match

Everything is moving more and more towards the contemporary styles as far as trends are concerned – but that doesn’t meant that the traditional or the classic have completely fizzled out. People more and more are mixing and matching colors, and textures, and finished to bring a uniqueness to their kitchen designs. Breaking up space with different colored countertops or different materials, pairing modern fixtures with a rustic style can all be used to mix and match a space just for you. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Mix & Match

4. Styles

Contemporary style on the rise – more and more we’re seeing a want from homeowners for clean, simple lines in their renovations. Modern rustic is also very popular – it’s a great way to work in some mixing and matching above (clean lines with an organic feeling stone wall or brick tile). Modern Rustic is a trend that is still in full swing and pairs well in a mix and match style, your can read more in-depth on the trend here. Consider a transitional kitchen if your selling to compromise between the growing contemporary trend and the popular traditional trends. If you’re wanting to remodel for yourself take the Waypoint Style Quiz to find out where your tastes in home decor and style land!

5. Functionality, Commercial Grade & Specialty Appliances.

Horizontal cabinetry, deep shelving, commercial grade, and specialty appliances are on everyones wish list for things to update their kitchens with! More and more people are looking for the luxury in appliances and how they can make their lives easier and their cooking better. It’s all meant to make the kitchen a more functional friendly space to be in and make cooking an enjoyable endeavor instead of a nightly chore. Kitchen Design: Trends & Resolutions for 2016: Stainless Steel Appliances     Remodeling and updating your kitchen in preparation for the new year is a great way to stick to you own new years resolutions to be a healthier person, do more cooking at home, updating your house, and spending more time with family. DIY Stone Tile Fireplace Makeover

Stone Tile Fireplace: Featured

DIY Stone Tile Fireplace Makeover

The halls are decked with boughs of holly and the stockings have been hung by the chimney with care – but maybe the room doesn’t look quite as comfy-cozy as can be. An easy and simple way to improve your space could be to update your outdated fireplace.
Wall tile is easily becoming one of the biggest and most popular trends on the market. With it you can give any space a rustic, old-world feel that is both natural feeling and inviting! Not to mention that it’s super versatile! A fun home improvement and interior design project that you can find everywhere one the web is a DIY Stone Tile Fireplace Makeover that will turn any fireplace into the centerpiece for the room!

What is Stone Tile?

Wall tile, sometimes also called ledger stone, is an easy alternative to laying stone or brick piece by piece. It’s an easy to install large-format, mesh-back or individual lay tile and is generally interlocking to give you a more natural look, instead of an even grid. Wall tile can mimic wood, stone, and even brick. Alternatively wall tile can also be used as a backsplash instead of an entire wall covering – which is good for doing small portions instead of covering your entire fireplace or other space.
There are tons of looks to choose from when selecting wall tile and ledger stone – and the same can be said for price ranges. So, the decision making will have to come on your part based on your budget and the style that you’re going for.
Here at Builders Surplus we carry 8 different in-stock ledger stone colors and can order 28 more for you as a custom order that generally arrives in less than 2 weeks!

Keep in Mind…

If you’re going to create a stone tile fireplace with any kind of wall tile keep in mind that you are putting this around, well, fire. While no tile is going to be completely fire proof or flame retardant you should still do your research. Also, do not cover the inside of your fireplace – that portion must be constructed from a fire-safe material.

Creating a Stone Tile Fireplace

There are many ways that you can install your own wall tile and that will mostly depend on the kind of tile that you get and the kind of job that you’re doing.
With most wall tile, it’s going to be heavy, and you’ll need to do some pre-work before you can install it, like taking off the existing tile and even the drywall to install a product called backer-board. Backer-board is a stiff product that keeps the tile and the base of the tile structurally sound. There are several different types of backer-board and each brand also carries it’s own specifications. Some are lighter than others and some are waterproof (in case you might be interested in doing the same with your bathtub).
Once all that is done and your backer board is secured you can start laying down your tile of choice. A stone tile fireplace makeover is really trendy right now because stone is so versatile and the decorating ideas so imaginative! Some styles will look extremely modern, and others will look more natural and old-world.
Stone Tile Fireplace: Modern & Traditional

Stone Tile Fireplace Style

There’s really no limit to how you can style your new stone tile fireplace! You can use a mix of individual lay tiles to jumble up the colors and make your own patterns and textures, or you can go for a very solid look. As well there is the option to cover every inch of the space like a stone accent wall or to just tile a small portion of the fireplace itself and have a smaller focal point that adds interest to the space. We even did a blog on how to use wall tile elsewhere in your home!
Installing your ledger stone tile can be a little tedious, but the looks is well worth the work in the end!
Stone Tile Fireplace: Christmas
Stone tile and faux stone give that beautiful stone tile fireplace look without the hassle or the price! Let your imagination run wild with the home design ideas you get, then when all the work is done cozy up next to your new stone tile fireplace with a hot mug of hot coco!

Durability:

Flooring must be functional and work with the demands of today’s busy lifestyle. One of the biggest disadvantages of hardwood flooring is that it is easily scratched from wear and tear of everyday foot traffic. Wood look tile flooring offers the best of both worlds because it looks like wood and feels like wood yet it withstands the daily rigors that comes from having pets, traffic and even spills. Tile is one of the most durable materials that you can put in your home and can last for decades, still looking good as new.

Resistance To Water:

We often get asked whether wood is an appropriate material to use in those moisture-prone areas, such as basements, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Real hard wood floors are highly susceptible to water damage and can swell and stain after short time exposure to water. However, wood look tile flooring allows you to enjoy the warmth of wood without the worry of moisture damage. These are absolutely perfect for the rooms listed above, and we’ve seen a resurgence of  the wood look in bathrooms because prior to the development of such believable wood look tile, you were not able to get this style in your ensuite.

Easy To Maintain:

True wood floors require a lot of effort and time to maintain them between finishing, resealing and re-staining that must be done on a regular basis. Wood look tile floors are easily maintained using a basic tile cleaner and warm water. You don’t have to worry about pets destroying them with accidents or claw scratches. They are also very child proof, and if you tend to move heavy furniture or appliances in your home or business, this is a top choice for you.

Beach Themed Bathroom Design

Today, we’ll be covering how to achieve a beach themed bathroom. On Tuesday, I returned from an incredible vacation to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and it has been a tough transition. Going from the Caribbean vibe everywhere I look to a void of ocean style has taken some adjustment. When I’m in a tropical location, my mood is brighter, my laugh is louder, my stress level is non-existant. That’s when I decided that when you can’t be in the tropics, you need to bring the tropics home to you by creating a beach themed bathroom!
There are many ways that you can take island style into your bathroom, a place that is built for relaxation. This room is already full of water & tile, two of the main components of the beach look, so you can create the look you’re going for by making a few smart design decisions.

Beach Themed Bathroom Design: The Top 5 Elements

1. Tropical Tile

The first, and possibly best way to bring the Caribbean feel into your bathroom is by using interesting tile choices. Bathrooms by the beach are usually heavily tiled, to help with the cleanup of sand and water. Tile is a big design element in many other rooms in the tropics as well. Lively patterns or ocean inspired colors or patterns usually work very well to help you achieve the look you’re going for.

This bathroom just screams beach themed. The blue green is very reminiscent of water, and added with the neutral tile accents, the desired look is achieved.

This is another great tile choice. The mosaic is often found in beach locations, and the movement in the pattern again reminds you of the feel of water.

This is my favorite tile choice, which very closely resembles the bathroom in my Jamaican paradise. Who can be sad looking at that pattern and gorgeous tropical blue? The open feel of the shower also gets you in the topical mood, blending outside with inside.

2. Foliage In The Bathroom

Jamaica means “The Land of Wood & Water” for obvious reasons. It is surrounded by water and has heavy forests all through the island. I love the green of the land paired with the blue of the sea. To do this is a non tropical location, you can simply add foliage and plant accents to your bathroom space to bring you back to the place that you call paradise.

This is one of the best that I’ve seen. The sanded bottom with the tree stump steps is genius. The open top also adds to the outdoor feel, but you can create this by painting your ceiling a bright white or even sky blue and adding faux posts. A simple wooden table acts as the perfect place for products.

This darker blue bathroom still evokes everything that makes me love the ocean. They have a limited amount of foliage in this bathroom, but it definitely does the trick. The taller plant is typical of what you would find in a beach location. The coral on the wall and shells on the sink top it off perfectly.

This is absolutely amazing and definitely a favorite of mine. The moss wall gives it the truly tropical style. My resort had an enormous wall of moss and several vertical gardens, so this look would be the perfect thing to remind me of the place I love so much. You can find out how to create your own moss wall here.

3. Perfect Paint Palettes

Paint color is another perfect way to create the beach themed bathroom you’ve been dreaming of. The bathrooms below don’t go crazy with tile, just have the right paint colors with a few perfect beach themed accessories to tie it all together. Simple can be just as effective.

4. Vessel Sinks

As we covered in a recent bathroom design trends blog, the vessel sink is very popular this year. However, even if it goes out for bathrooms of all styles, it will always remain a beach bathroom favorite. Something about this look reminds me of island life.

5. Nautical Neutrals

The sand is what makes the beach, the beach. Feeling it beneath our feet, warm with the sun, is one of those simple joys in life that you just can’t get anywhere else. Taking sandy colors from the beach to your bathroom is a quick way to turn your powder room into paradise. The two below have done a great job of making an understated color the perfect backdrop in their bathroom. Again, adding a few nautical accents makes a big difference in giving you the theme you’re looking for.

Top 5 Ways To Use Brick Tile in your Home

brick tile bath

Brick has been used as a building material for thousands of years. Fired brick is one of the sturdiest building materials that you can use, lasting many lifetimes. While the look of brick outdoors or exposed brick indoors is extremely popular, it is not the cheapest or easiest building material to do yourself. Because of this, many companies have developed brick veneer or brick tiles that mimic the exact look of brick, but are very easy to install, and are also very cost effective. At Builders Surplus, we offer three types of brick tile for order, in White, Taupe, and Red. These tiles are great to use in so many different ways! In this article, I’ll be showing you how you can use these tiles to add a very special element to your home.

Top 5 Ways To Use Brick Tile in Your Home

1. Brick Tile Accent Wall

I think brick is the perfect material for an accent wall. No matter what wall you’re looking at covering, or what style the room is decorated in, brick will pretty much work for them all. Brick is one of the most nostalgic materials available for your home and brings a feeling of history to the room in which it’s present. The brick tile accent wall below is just the right size, not too big, but not small enough that it gets lost in the space. However, much larger walls will work as well. It really depends on how committed you are to the brick look.

2. Brick Tile Backsplash

Many people are under the false impression that brick is not an appropriate backsplash material. I HIGHLY disagree! Brick tile backsplash is one of my favorite looks. As you can see, you don’t have to have the full country design to be able to utilize brick tile. They mix high end cabinetry, granite countertops and gorgeous brass light fixtures with the brick tile backsplash to create a unique look that feels warm and inviting. Brick has a way of doing that, don’t you think?

3. Brick Tile Flooring

This brick tile flooring is absolutely stunning! Brick flooring is not my first thought when thinking about ways to use brick tile in my home. But, after seeing this photo, It’s definitely at the forefront! It is stunning in this space. I think the key to brick tile flooring is to use it sparingly. It would not be the right choice for your entire home, but in this dining area, the brick shines! With the earthy materials and neutral colors, it is the first thing that draws your eye and makes this a really cohesive space that screams great design.

4. Brick Tile Fireplace Recovering

Brick fireplaces have been around for hundreds of years and I doubt they will ever go out of style. A brick fireplace is a lovely historical accent to your home, but doesn’t have to appear old world. You can decorate any way that you want around a brick fireplace. The first thing that comes to mind is the phrase ‘warm and cozy’, which is what a brick fireplace evokes. If you were blessed with a fireplace, but not one made of brick, worry not! Using brick tile to recover your fireplace is the easiest, most cost effective way get the same look and feel.

5. Brick Tile Beam and Post Coverings

This is my favorite new way to use brick tile! (Could be because I’m about to do this in my home?) I absolutely love the way that brick posts or beams look. It is a nice change from the traditional wooden posts, but can be mixed with them nicely. It gives off a rustic, farmhouse or french country style and can be mixed with a variety of decor options.  This is a very easy way to get the look of real brick posts without the hassle or extra money. Would you ever do this in your home?

While those are the top 5 ways that brick tile can be used, there are definitely many more! Let us know what other ways you think brick tile could be used to jazz up your space! Happy Remodeling!

Wall Tile Ideas & Options

In your current or upcoming home renovation project, you may be running dry on wall tile ideas. Wall tile is typically most prominent in bathrooms and kitchens, however they can be used in a variety of spaces, like the laundry room or even on an accent wall! But finding the perfect wall tile ideas can seem like a daunting task, considering their are not just hundreds, but THOUSANDS of options. Not only do they have different colors, patterns, sizes and finishes, they are also made of different materials with a variety of costs. This article hopes to help you navigate through the different wall tile ideas to find what types might be best for you. Hopefully we can eliminate some of the confusion involved when tackling a wall tile project.
*All wall tile ideas featured below can be purchased at Builders Surplus in Louisville or Newport, Kentucky. Daltile is the featured supplier in this post.

Most Popular Wall Tile Ideas:

The most used wall tile choices are made of either ceramic, porcelain or stone. These will be used predominately in bathrooms. They look beautiful and hold up nicely and come in a variety of looks and price ranges. Many types of stone, like marble or limestone, are great to use on shower walls specifically, as long as they’re properly sealed. If so, they will no longer be porous, which means your materials will last as long as possible. A few sub categories include:

Glazed ceramic:
These wall tiles come in almost all colors possible and in many patterns and designs. They are typically waterproof, and can be used in wet areas like showers, bathrooms, kitchens and any other area, where you think water can seep in. These are made from clay and glazed. The amount of gloss differentiates the high-gloss, matte glazed and slip resistant glazed tiles. The last variety is shiny, but not slippery, and ideal for bathroom floors.

Mosaic:
This type of wall tile is also made from clay. Each tile has different kinds of color pigment, and the appearance is quite vibrant. The characteristic feature of mosaic is that, even when it is chipped, you can see the pigments running through the entire tile. They can be used on walls, as they are, or can be used to form design elements like medallions, or even in small strips in between larger tile to create a unique look (and less grout lines!). You can also use mosaic to cover the borders of the walls or wainscoting. Mosaic is one of my favorite wall tile ideas.

Marble:
This type of tiling material was initially thought to be only for the rich. However, this misconception is slowly changing, and people are using more marble, as it brings elegance and class to any space. They are durable and provide a artistic and aesthetic look to the interiors. With good maintenance, they can stay for many years. There are many colors available in this stone, the most popular one being the white and green.

Glass:
These tiles are one of the most contemporary and provide a lot of shimmer to any space. They illuminate the interiors and make the room look bigger. They are available in frosted and bubble glass varieties. Frosted glass tiles are opaque and provide a flat surface to the wall. The bubble glass variety has small air bubbles inside, which adds a design element and character to the external appearance. Glass can come in mosaic, subway tile, and many other styles as well. Glass is a good option for kitchen backsplash or shower/bathtub wall tile.

Unique Patterns in Any Materials:
Looking for unique wall tile ideas? Today, pattern is key. The more unique, the better, and patterned tile is a great way to express your personal style. At Builders Surplus, we offer an extensive collection of patterned tile for you to choose from. Below are two of my favorite options that really bring a lot of personality to a space.

Stone - Baroque Chenille White

Things to Avoid:

When deciding on floor tile vs wall tile, there are a few things to consider. You should steer clear of slick materials, such as high gloss ceramic, on the floor, but it’s a wonderful option for walls. Some types of stone don’t work well in steam showers, and other can break down in wet areas. Typically, stay away from dark limestone in these places.

In Style Tile:

For the most part, all of the above listed materials are in style, it just really depends on the look of your space. White marble has been popular for some time, but I believe it will remain a favorite, as white can always be considered timeless and classic. Glass and mosaics are extremely popular options for kitchen backspashes, as well as for showers or decorative accents, and Reclaimed glass has been a hot trend lately as well.  Patterns with a modern or geometric flare are emerging to become just as popular as their home decor counterparts.
For smaller bathrooms,  it is very much in style (and practical) to use large scale tile. This can make the space feel much more expansive. Continuing the large scale tile on the floor and walls increases this look of space and having your wall tile extend to the ceiling can help you achieve the look as well. It also adds a touch of european elegance, as this has been popular there for some time.

Things to Consider:

When deciding on a shower tile, think smaller. This helps slope the water to the drain appropriately. Mosaics are often used in shower tile for it’s small stature and visually appealing qualities.  Think about you and your lifestyle when selecting tile for any area of the home. If you have pets, avoid white ( on floors or shower walls, if you rinse them there)! If you have kids, steer toward porcelain for the bathroom. It is low maintenance and durable. Also, take not of the architecture and existing colors in your home. Just because you’re drawn to the modern design, it may not fit as perfectly in your rustic style home. Keeping the theme consistent will help promote unity in your decor. Find one element in your home that really attracts you, such as a decorative element or pattern, color, or texture, and use that as a starting point to decide on the other components.

Before you start:

For help on deciding the best products or materials for a space your unsure about, please speak with one of our experienced interior designer at no cost! They will help you plan your space perfectly. Also, make sure you that whomever is installing your tile is experienced. This will ensure that it lasts as long as it is supposed to, and you don’t have water seeping in behind it. We have professional installers at your disposal if you’re not up for the DIY tile project. Tile is a long term commitment, so don’t let price be your main deciding factor. Make sure that you pick something that you’ll be happy to see every day for years and years to come. A thought to keep in mind, is to try to limit 3 different tile types to one space. This could be one for floor, one for your walls, and one for your shower. It could be one on the floor and walls, and a main and accent tile in the shower and tub. The choice is up to you, but this rule of thumb is a design tip that has proven to create a unified look in any style home.
