Your Guide to Waterproof Flooring!

Introduction to Waterproof Flooring

In today’s world, homeowners are constantly seeking ways to improve the functionality and durability of their living spaces while maintaining a stylish and modern aesthetic. One of the most significant aspects to consider when designing or remodeling a home is the flooring. With a variety of options available, waterproof flooring has emerged as an increasingly popular choice for many households. This type of flooring provides numerous benefits, including resistance to water damage, easy maintenance, and durability in high-traffic areas. Whether you’re on a tight budget, have young children or pets, or simply want a long-lasting and low-maintenance flooring solution, waterproof flooring is an ideal choice. In this blog post, we will explore the two main waterproof flooring options – luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate – and help you understand their unique features, histories, and benefits. By the end of this post, you will have the knowledge needed to make an informed decision about the best waterproof flooring solution for your home.

Waterproof your floor

Two Main Waterproof Flooring Options

When it comes to selecting waterproof flooring, there are two primary options that cater to different preferences and requirements. Understanding the unique features and benefits of each option will help you make the best choice for your home.

a. Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVT or LVP)

Luxury Vinyl Flooring, also known as Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) or Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), is a highly versatile and durable flooring option made from multiple layers of PVC vinyl. LVT and LVP are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural materials, such as hardwood or stone, while providing the added benefits of water resistance, easy installation, and low maintenance. Luxury vinyl flooring is ideal for homeowners who want the look and feel of natural materials without the high cost or susceptibility to water damage.

b. Waterproof Laminate

Waterproof laminate is an innovative flooring option that offers the benefits of traditional laminate flooring while incorporating enhanced water resistance. Unlike standard laminate flooring, which is only water-resistant, waterproof laminate features a surface that is impervious to water, making it suitable for areas prone to spills or moisture. However, it is important to note that only the surface of waterproof laminate is waterproof, and water damage can still occur if moisture seeps into the cracks or underneath the flooring. Waterproof laminate is a good option for those seeking an affordable, stylish, and moderately water-resistant flooring solution.

By comparing the features and benefits of luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate, you can determine the best waterproof flooring option for your specific needs and preferences.

Water proof Laminate

WATERPROOF LAMINATE

Comparing Laminate and Luxury Vinyl Flooring

When choosing between laminate and luxury vinyl flooring, it’s essential to understand their differences in terms of composition, durability, water resistance, and other factors. By examining these differences, you can make an informed decision about the best waterproof flooring solution for your home.

a. Material Composition

Laminate flooring is composed of multiple layers, with its primary layer (the core) made of high-density fiberboard. This provides laminate flooring with rigidity and strength. On the other hand, luxury vinyl flooring is made primarily of PVC vinyl, which makes it dimensionally stable and flexible. Learn more about laminate vs. luxury vinyl flooring in our blog post.

b. Water Resistance

While waterproof laminate has a water-resistant surface, only the surface is waterproof. If water penetrates the cracks or seeps underneath the flooring, damage can occur. Luxury vinyl flooring, in contrast, is entirely waterproof, making it a more suitable option for areas prone to moisture or spills. Discover more about waterproof flooring options on our blog.

c. Durability and Maintenance

Both laminate and luxury vinyl flooring are durable and low-maintenance options. However, luxury vinyl flooring is generally more resistant to dents, scratches, and fading caused by sunlight exposure, making it a more robust choice for high-traffic areas and households with children or pets. Read our blog post on the durability of luxury vinyl flooring for more information.

d. Appearance and Cost

Laminate flooring can closely mimic the appearance of real hardwood floors or slate at a lower cost, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners. Luxury vinyl flooring also offers a wide range of design options that closely resemble natural materials, often at a competitive price point. Explore our blog on affordable flooring options for more insights.

e. Environmental and Health Factors

Laminate flooring is considered an environmentally friendly choice due to its composition, which often includes recycled materials. Additionally, some laminate flooring options are resistant to chemicals and burns, providing added safety benefits. Luxury vinyl flooring, on the other hand, offers built-in soundproofing and often doesn’t contain harmful chemicals that can impact indoor air quality. Check out our blog post on eco-friendly flooring choices for more information.

By comparing laminate and luxury vinyl flooring across these key factors, you can make a well-informed decision about the best waterproof flooring option to suit your specific needs, budget, and design preferences.

Durability:

Flooring must be functional and work with the demands of today’s busy lifestyle. One of the biggest disadvantages of hardwood flooring is that it is easily scratched from wear and tear of everyday foot traffic. Wood look tile flooring offers the best of both worlds because it looks like wood and feels like wood yet it withstands the daily rigors that comes from having pets, traffic and even spills. Tile is one of the most durable materials that you can put in your home and can last for decades, still looking good as new.

Resistance To Water:

We often get asked whether wood is an appropriate material to use in those moisture-prone areas, such as basements, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Real hard wood floors are highly susceptible to water damage and can swell and stain after short time exposure to water. However, wood look tile flooring allows you to enjoy the warmth of wood without the worry of moisture damage. These are absolutely perfect for the rooms listed above, and we’ve seen a resurgence of  the wood look in bathrooms because prior to the development of such believable wood look tile, you were not able to get this style in your ensuite.

Easy To Maintain:

True wood floors require a lot of effort and time to maintain them between finishing, resealing and re-staining that must be done on a regular basis. Wood look tile floors are easily maintained using a basic tile cleaner and warm water. You don’t have to worry about pets destroying them with accidents or claw scratches. They are also very child proof, and if you tend to move heavy furniture or appliances in your home or business, this is a top choice for you.

The Most Pet Friendly Types Of Flooring For Your Home

The types of flooring you choose when building or remodeling your home can be a challenging decision. It can become even more of a challenge if you have pets living in your home. We are frequently asked what types of flooring are best for pet owners, especially those living with man’s best friend.

Dogs may be man’s best friend but they can be your floor’s worst nightmare if you don’t first consider the pros and cons for the types of flooring you may be considering. Innovation has changed the way that flooring is manufactured and recycled, creating several options that can withstand anything your pet dishes out. Check out some of the pet-friendly types of flooring we have sniffed out for you.

pet-friendly-hardwood-floors-lab

1. Hardwood VS. Wood-Look

We’ll tackle hardwood flooring first since this is one of the most desired types of flooring.

The bottom line is the best wood floor for your dog isn’t a wood floor.

Choosing hardwood flooring when you have a dog in the home is tricky unless your dog is well-trained.  Otherwise, hardwood floors require a tremendous amount of attention and maintenance. Dog or cat urine can stain the hardwood and leave an undesired smell.

Even if you clean it up right away, there’s a good chance the smell will persist because the urine seeps down into the wood as the wood expands. The same is true for any other liquid that spills or drops onto a  wood floor.

Pet Friendly Types Of Flooring at Builders Surplus in Louisville & Newport, Ky | Cincinnati
Pet Friendly Types of Flooring Wood Type Builders Surplus

Hardwood floors also scratch easily. Dogs don’t have to have to have sharp claws for them to scratch the surface and affect the wood floor. You can lay out area rugs and runners down the hallway but their claws can still penetrate the sealer coat and ruin the hardwood.

There are other types of flooring that can achieve the same appearance if you are bound and determined to have the look of hardwood in your home. Wood-look tile is not what it used to be and it even can come plank-sized in a variety of colors and finishes.

Luxury Vinyl is one of the most used types of flooring for pet owners because it’s known to be one of the most resilient and durable options available. Luxury Vinyl flooring is scratch and stain resistant, low in allergens and extremely easy to clean.

It’s also very quiet to walk on which is a huge perk for those who frequently hear their dog’s nails click clack on the floor. Luxury Vinyl is a very affordable flooring.

Vinyl Flooring Instock Builders Surplus
vinyl_plank_flooring

The #1 reason pet owners love luxury vinyl flooring? IT’S 100% WATERPROOF! Seriously, waterproof. If you’re out of town and sparky has a few accidents and no one is there to clean it up, have no fear. You can easily clean it without leaving a stain, smell, or damaging the planks.

3. Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring can be a sensible option for dog owners and a great compromise between hardwood and vinyl flooring. Bamboo has a wood surface and is the hardest of all hardwoods. Because of it’s durability, it stands up to foot traffic and can withstand scratches and stains better than traditional hardwood.  Not only is bamboo flooring stain resistant but it’s completely renewable so it’s good for the Earth.

Bamboo Flooring for Pet Friendly Floors Builders Surplus
Types Of Flooring Builders Surplus in Louisville, KY

Not all bamboo flooring is a good option though, so be sure to do your research and look specifically for bamboo flooring manufacturers, like US Floors, who draw attention to the hardness of their floors. The bamboo flooring should be strand woven and not made from immature bamboo plants, otherwise, it will be quite soft and won’t stand up to the two and four-legged traffic in your home.

4. Laminate Flooring

Laminate is another type of flooring that can be made to look like wood. Many dog owners turn to laminate flooring over traditional hardwood because it’s such an affordable way to achieve a wood look. It’s also strong and can be scratch and water resistant (not with every laminate) but there are other factors to take into consideration before choosing this option.

laminate types of flooring builders surplus in louisville ky
Pet Friendly Types Of Flooring Builders Surplus

A lot of pet owners like wood-like laminate to provide the home decor they are looking for but it can be difficult for dogs because they slip and slide as they walk or run through the home. Another factor to consider is that although laminate is water resistant, any spills or accidents have the potential to seep through the crevices between the planks creating the potential for staining. I’ve also seen plenty of laminates scratch, so make sure it’s got a thick wear layer.

5.  Stone Tile Flooring

Stone tile is an amazing flooring option for pet owners because this tough surface doesn’t scratch easily and if it does, the scratches don’t show like they do on other types of flooring. When pets have accidents on the stone tile floor, there is much less reason to worry about how it will impact the condition of the flooring because any mess can easily be cleaned up. These two factors alone make it a valuable option for dog owners looking at different types of flooring for their home.

The downside of stone flooring is that it’s cold and hard so it’s very uncomfortable to lay on  and walk upon. Granite is the hardest all natural stone and one of the better stone flooring options because it is low maintenance compared to softer stones such as marble, slate and travertine.

Cork Flooring at Builders Surplus

6. Cork Flooring

Cork is another eco-and-pet friendly flooring choice because it’s good for the environment and health of those in your home. Cork flooring is high on the dog-friendly flooring list because it’s hypoallergenic and antimicrobial so it will reduce the the growth of mold and other allergens that dogs may be responsible for.

It’s also scratch resistant and sound absorbent so not only will your floor not get scuffed and scratched up, but your four legged friend will move through the house like a stealth ninja.

Cork flooring is water resistant but since it’s a natural surface, spills and accidents should be cleaned without delay.  The finish of most cork flooring is closer to a hardwood floor than vinyl or stone but it does have a tendency to discolor over time if it’s exposed to sunlight. Cork flooring is fairly expensive option but it is totally worth considering due to it’s overall lifespan, especially in a home with pets.

7. CoreTec Luxury Vinyl Tile

CoreTec is a luxury vinyl on steriods. COREtec is one of the most reputable LVT brands on the market, and it’s quickly becoming a first choice in homes with pets and kids. CoreTec Flooring has the rustic wood look of a hardwood floor but it is completely scratch resistant, 100% waterproof, quieter and softer than standard hardwood.

It has three layers with vinyl on top and a core made from recycled wood, bamboo, limestone and PVC. It’s so waterproof that it will never swell and the cork underlayment is backed by a lifetime warranty by it’s manufacturer, US Floors.

I hope this has helped you to better understand some of the pet-friendly flooring options that are available today. This is just a basic guide to some of the distinct pros and cons for each flooring type.

Ultimately most flooring types can be suitable for certain pets if you approach it with forethought. Whichever floor you choose, remember to keep your dog’s nails trimmed to minimize the impact on your floors.

Also, consider using floor mats around the entry ways to your home so dirt can be easily wiped down before your pet comes back inside.  We are a pet loving company so don’t hesitate to contact us or leave a comment if you have any other questions.

Homearama 2015: Modern Rustic Design

In visiting Homearama 2015 in Louisville, we took note of a huge trend – modern rustic decor & materials. Whether it’s the shaky economy or a ‘waste not want not’ mentality, there is a surge in the simplicity of naturally exposed architectural elements and modern rustic decor in today’s home design. It didn’t take very long to observe this trend within the eleven homes featured at Homearama 2015, which took place at Spring Lake Farm subdivision, located off Wolf Pen Branch Road in northeastern Louisville. This year’s showcase of homes revealed an ambience of reclaimed and restored elements that gave a sense of connection to the past, yet in combination with modern furniture and decor, offered an element of comfort that we all seek within our home. For some, the modern aesthetic is too cold and uninviting. For many, the rustic style is not refined. But when you mix the two, I think there are many people who can appreciate this incredible style.

MODERN STYLE, RUSTIC APPEAL AT HOMEARAMA 2015

Modern Rustic Wood Shelves

Many of the home design and decor ideas featured at Homearama 2015 were defined by a contrasting blend of elements that seem to oppose one another but actually offered a cozy sense of comfort and relaxation. By pairing two aspects of design that don’t seem to really go together, it emphasized the best qualities of both.
Below you’ll find some of our favorite rustic pieces with a modern spin. Starting from the left, the heavily distressed furniture piece is paired with a modern work of art. The light fixture is slightly industrial, yet modern & simplistic. The distressing technique is very popular right now and is something you can easily do yourself. Next, the rustic wooden table is defiantly the focal point of the room. The material gives it the rustic feel, but the shape is extremely modern. It’s all about clean lines. The shape of the chairs, burlap inspired rug, and wooden beams also play heavily into the farmhouse chic movement.

The color palette screams modern, while the shape of the piece and the distressing techniques are very rustic. All you need is some chalk paint, antiquing wax & a sander if you’re feeling up for it, and you can take a $20 flea market find & turn it into this high class creation. Lastly, the sliding barn door. While the door itself is very rustic, the sliding hardware is definitely a modern element. These doors give whatever space you put them in a little bit of oomph! Learn how to make them from our Knotted Pine Rustic Doors here.Homearama Modern RusticBelow are two more decor finds that we love. The shabby chic dining room was one of my favorites, as teal and coral paired with wood is such a perfect combination. The cabinetry in the room is a modern piece, but the glass faces bring out the old school charm. You can find custom cabinetry like this through our Wellborn Cabinets line. To the right, you’ll find a modern soaker tub, similar to our Bliss Modern Soaking Tub. This is obvioulsy a modern piece, but the wood stump table gives it the rustic charm we all love. It makes modern approachable, and somehow warmer, which is exactly what you need in your master bath retreat.

HOMEARAMA 2015 FLOORING: GO RUSTIC OR GO HOME

The largest feature in most rooms is the flooring, as it’s an important backdrop to any home design. These floors at Homearama made a statement while providing a strong, rustic finish with a weathered style and bold character. It’s a trend in home decorating that’s adaptable and functional yet demonstrates boldness, creativity and originality. Starting at the bottom left, you’ll see the variations in the wood with extreme lights and darks, swirled together to create one beautiful floor. This hardwood definitely makes you feel nostalgic. Then, you’ll find one of our favorite pieces. This old wooden barrel, combined with a video game, is probably the best mix of old and new that we’ve seen! Not to mention those floors, which are incredible!
Below, you’ll find a light wood look tile. Wood look tile is extremely popular this year, and I don’t see the popularity dwindling any time soon. Wood look tile offers you the beauty of wood combined with the durability of tile. You can use this in bathrooms, basements and laundry rooms, areas that previously weren’t the best for hardwood because of the possible water exposure. Now, you don’t have to choose between beauty and functionality! It’s a beautiful thing.

A few more of our favorite rustic flooring choices are below. The carpet to the left has a burlap feel, and for a game room, it sends just the right vibe. Rustic, but with the comforts of a modern home. The two wood look tiles to the right are incredible. The are super distressed and the orange and blue tones give it something special that I’ve never seen before. The wall art fits perfectly & the designer definitely achieved the look they were hoping to pull off.

MODERN RUSTIC KITCHEN CABINETS AT HOMEARAMA

One of the primary trends we spotted at Homearama 2015 in Louisville is the rustic, grey/brown kitchen cabinet color. Grey has been one of the top cabinet paint colors of the season, and while it’s still very popular, it’s “cousin” is rising in popularity as well. This grey toned brown stays in line with the modern rustic theme. It looks elegant & classy, but slightly farmhouse. I personally love it! We have several kitchen & bath cabinets options to choose from in this popular color, such as the Wellborn Davenport Square, the Hanover, or the Monterey. One of the things I like best is the wood grain which shows through, unlike in a standard grey or white painted kitchen cabinet. This is done using a mix of paint & glaze.

For the look of reclaimed wood without spending a fortune, our unfinished alder shaker kitchen and bath cabinets are the perfect place to start in crafting your own authentic style. You can varnish the wood for a natural, bare look or glaze the surface with a preferred paint color. The technique of mixing the glaze with paint provides a translucent color to the cabinet and will highlight the natural grain. This is one of the primary ways that you can take your cabinets from traditional to rustic in a flash.

Once your painting, staining, or glazing is complete, look for knobs, pulls or unique handles to embellish your kitchen or bath cabinet and complete your own modern rustic design. Take a look at our knob & pull selection here.
